Abstract

Purpose

The case of the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Shanghai, China raises an important issue with respect to transnational venue management corporations embedding and operating in foreign markets. The purpose of this paper is to examine how Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG) has implemented social embeddedness strategy to influence the management structure and enhance operational performance of the Mercedes-Benz Arena.

Design/methodology/approach

A case study approach was chosen to examine the social embeddedness of AEG through the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Shanghai. An in-depth interview was conducted with John Cappo, the President and CEO of AEG China, in April 2016. In addition, the relative news and interviews of leaders from AEG and AEG China over the past ten years was also collected. Qualitative content analysis of the data was conducted through a coding approach. All the materials were coded into three main categories based on three aspects of social embeddedness: local stakeholder relations, reputation and trust-building, cultural and institutional adaptation.

Findings

AEG has demonstrated how a transnational venue management corporation can successfully integrate social embeddedness strategy with the management structure and operational procedures of the Mercedes-Benz Arena in three ways. First is through the relationship between AEG and its partners in the joint venture, OPG in terms of the enforcement of the contract, the clear division of responsibilities, and the mutual understanding and use of relationship building. Second is the relationship between AEG and the local government in Shanghai. Third was adapting the structures of AEG to fit within local culture and institutional contexts.

Originality/value

The unique multi-stakeholder relationship inherent to venue management in China raises important questions with respect to transnational venue management corporations operating in foreign markets. The adaptation to the local context, as a moderating factor to the institutional exposure of a venue management company involves more challenging obstacles for non-local firms, compared to firms which are familiar with their institutional context. Understanding the key solutions in building relationships and trust with partners in joint venture and local government, as well as the key methods to adopt in local contexts, have applications across any number of sport industries.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore the determinants of family business owners’ intrafamily succession intention based on the theory of planned behavior and neo-institutional theory.

Design/methodology/approach

National survey data were collected from Chinese private firms in 2010, and a sample of 804 family firms was used to test the hypotheses.

Findings

At the micro level, familism, intrafamily succession regulation and family control have positive effects on owners’ intrafamily succession intention. At the macro level, district succession orientation, which is the district prevalence of intrafamily succession practice, has a positive effect on owners’ intrafamily succession intention. Additionally, the district succession orientation weakens the positive effects of intrafamily succession regulation and family control.

Originality/value

The paper contributes to the understanding of family business owners’ intrafamily succession intention from both micro and macro perspectives. Besides, it also contributes to the integration of micro and macro research by examining the interaction effects.

Abstract

Purpose

Climate change has aroused widespread concern around the world, which is one of the most complex challenges encountered by human beings. The underlying cause of climate change is the increase of carbon emissions. To reduce carbon emissions, the analysis of the factors affecting this type of emission is of practical significance.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper identified five factors affecting carbon emissions using the logarithmic mean Divisia index (LMDI) decomposition model (e.g. per capita carbon emissions, industrial structure, energy intensity, energy structure and per capita GDP). Besides, based on the projection pursuit method, this paper obtained the optimal projection directions of five influencing factors in 30 provinces (except for Tibet). Based on the data from 2000 to 2014, the authors predicted the optimal projection directions in the next six years under the Markov transfer matrix.

Findings

The results indicated that per capita GDP was the critical factor for reducing carbon emissions. The industrial structure and population intensified carbon emissions. The energy structure had seldom impacted on carbon emissions. The energy intensity obviously inhibited carbon emissions. The best optimal projection direction of each index in the next six years remained stable. Finally, this paper proposed the policy implications.

Originality/value

This paper provides an insight into the current state and the future changes in carbon emissions.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to meta-analytically compare the effect of differentiation strategy formulation on financial and non-financial performance to explore the agency problem.

Design/methodology/approach

This study was conducted using a meta-analysis approach and CMA2 software. Hypotheses has been tested using cumulative effect sizes. Then, the cumulative effect sizes if some subsamples are also tested for robustness check by manipulation of circumstances.

Findings

Based on the findings, differentiation affects performance dimensions. However, spite of shareholders’ wealth maximization, differentiation has a smaller effect on financial performance (as the proxy of shareholders’ wealth) compared with operational performance. Meanwhile, the robustness test showed that the results in all subcategories has also confirmed, and this supports the results.

Research limitations/implications

The results catch attentions of shareholders to review the elements of management evaluation in the corporate governance system in a way that they focus more on stakeholders’ interests in developing differentiation strategy. Limitations of this study is firstly based on limitations of meta-analysis approach, which provide general results of relevant studies so that the local conditions of each firm should be considered in deploying implications.

Originality/value

Exploring the overall schema of firms (from past to present and in different research conditions) regarding the impact of differentiation strategy on performance has been the originality of this research because of potentials of meta-analysis against past field studies. This originality led to the discovery of the general confusion of firms in the development of differentiation strategy so that it emphasizes operational performance more than financial performance.

Abstract

Purpose

There are high expectations for reliability, safety and fault tolerance are high in chemical plants. Control systems are capable of potential faults in the plant processing systems. This paper proposes is a new Fault Tolerant Control (FTC) system to identify the probable fault occurrences in the plant.

Design/methodology/approach

A Fault Diagnosis and Isolation (FDI) module has been devised based on the estimated state of system. An Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF) is the main innovation of the FDI module to identify the faults. A Multi-Sensor Data Fusion algorithm is utilized to integrate the UKF output data to enhance fault identification. The UKF employs an augmented state vector to estimate system states and faults simultaneously. A control mechanism is designed to compensate for the undesirable effects of the detected faults.

Findings

The performance of the Nonlinear Model Predictive Controller (NMPC) without any fault compensation is compared with the proposed FTC scheme under different fault scenarios. Analysis of the simulation results indicates that the FDI method is able to identify the faults accurately. The proposed FTC approach facilitates recovery of the closed loop performance after the faults have been isolated.

Originality/value

A significant contribution of the paper is the design of an FTC system by using UKF to estimate faults and enhance the accuracy of data. This is done by applying a data fusion algorithm and controlling the system by the NMPC after eliminating the effects of faults.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to show the impact of climate change on yield and water requirement of three rainfed crops in Setif region.

Design/methodology/approach

This study investigates likely changes in annual temperature and precipitation over Setif high plains region (North East of Algeria) among three future periods: 2025, 2050 and 2075. The projections are based on the SRES A2 and B2 scenarios. MAGICC-SCENGEN 5.3 v.2 was used as a tool for downscaling the four selected general circulation models (GCMs) output data. The expected impact of climate change on yield and water requirement of winter wheat, barley and olive was evaluated using the CROPWAT model.

Findings

The projection of the four GCMs showed that average temperature will increase by 0.73 to 3.42°C, and the precipitation will decrease by 1 to 52.7 percent, across the three future periods under the two SRES scenarios. Winter wheat and olive yields are expected to decrease under the three types of soils (heavy, medium and light). However, barley yield is expected to reduce under light soil only. Crop water requirements and irrigation water requirements are expected to increase under the two scenarios and across the three future periods.

Originality/value

This research is one of the first to study the impact of future climate change on water requirement and yield of rainfed crops over Setif region.

Abstract

Purpose

Cloud computing provides a dynamic, heterogeneous and elastic environment by offering accessible ‘cloud services’ to end-users. The tasks involved in making cloud services available, such as matchmaking, selection and composition, are essential and closely related to each other. Integration of these tasks is critical for optimal composition and performance of the cloud service platform. More efficient solutions could be developed by considering cloud service tasks collectively, but the research and academic community have so far only considered these tasks individually. The purpose of this paper is to propose an integrated QoS-based approach for cloud service matchmaking, selection and composition using the Semantic Web.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, the authors propose a new approach using the Semantic Web and quality of service (QoS) model to perform cloud service matchmaking, selection and composition, to fulfil the requirements of an end user. In the Semantic Web, the authors develop cloud ontologies to provide semantic descriptions to the service provider and requester, so as to automate the cloud service tasks. This paper considers QoS parameters, such as availability, throughput, response time and cost, for quality assurance and enhanced user satisfaction.

Findings

This paper focus on the development of an integrated framework and approach for cloud service life cycle phases, such as discovery, selection and composition using QoS, to enhance user satisfaction and the Semantic Web, to achieve automation. To evaluate performance and usefulness, this paper uses a scenario based on a Healthcare Decision-Making System (HDMS). Results derived through the experiment prove that the proposed prototype performs well for the defined set of cloud-services tasks.

Originality/value

As a novel concept, our proposed integrated framework and approach for cloud service matchmaking, selection and composition based on the Semantic Web and QoS characterisitcs (availability, response time, throughput and cost), as part of the service level agreement (SLA) will help the end user to match, select and filter cloud services and integrate cloud-service providers into a multi-cloud environment.

Purpose

Scanning projection-based stereolithography (SPSL) is a powerful technology for additive manufacturing with high resolution as well as large building area. However, the surface quality of stitching boundary in an SPSL system has been rarely studied, and no positive settlement was proposed to address the poor stitching quality. This paper aims to propose an approach of multi-pass scanning and a compensation algorithm for multi-pass scanning process to address the issue of poor stitching quality in SPSL systems.

Design/methodology/approach

The process of multi-pass scanning is realized by scanning regions repeatedly, and the regions can be cured simultaneously because of the very short repeat exposure time and very fast scanning. Then, the poor stitching quality caused by the non-simultaneous curing can be eliminated. Also, a compensation algorithm is designed for multi-pass scanning to reduce the stitching errors. The validity of multi-pass scanning is verified by curing depth test, while the performance of multi-pass scanning as well as proposed compensation algorithm is demonstrated by comparing with that of a previous SPSL system.

Findings

The results lead to a conclusion that multi-pass scanning with its compensation algorithm is an effective approach to improve the stitching quality of an SPSL system.

Practical implications

This study can provide advice for researchers to achieve the satisfactory surface finish with SPSL technology.

Originality/value

The authors proposed a process of multi-pass scanning as well as a compensation algorithm for SPSL additive manufacturing (system to improve the stitching quality, which has rarely been studied in previous work.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to enhance the accuracy as well as efficiency of high-speed machining, avoid the speed fluctuation caused by acceleration/deceleration (ACC/DEC) and increase the smoothness of feedrate in continuous corners or curves machining. The Hbot kinematic system was analyzed and combined with fused deposition modeling-based (FDM) additive manufacturing (AM) technology. Then a real-time adaptive look-ahead speed control algorithm was proposed.

Design/methodology/approach

To validate the performance of Hbot kinematic system and the proposed speed control algorithm, the positioning accuracy of Hbot and cross structure was compared. Also, the experimental verification was conducted among FDM based 3-D printer with cross structure as well as open source speed control algorithm (FDM with cross-OS), cross structure and the proposed speed control algorithm (FDM with cross-PS) and Hbot structure, as well as the proposed speed control algorithm (FDM with Hbot-PS), respectively.

Findings

The results indicate that the Hbot kinematic system leads to the high stability of positioning accuracy due to the small motion inertia. Furthermore, the experimental verification shows that the efficiency, printing precision and surface finish of models for FDM with Hbot-PS are obviously higher than that for FDM with cross-PS as well as FDM with cross-OS, while FDM with cross-OS shows the worst performance. The contribution of Hbot kinematic system and the proposed speed control algorithm to FDM based AM technology was validated by this work.

Practical implications

The Hbot kinematic system and proposed speed control algorithm have the important implication of improving the accuracy of FDM machines, especially in the low-price range segment. Also, this work can help future system developers show a possible way of tackling the motion inertia problem.

Originality/value

The study of Hbot kinematic system and proposed algorithm are expected to advise the current research for improving the accuracy as well as the efficiency of FDM-based AM technology.

Abstract

Purpose

Efficient traffic incident management is needed to alleviate the negative impact of traffic incidents. Accurate and reliable estimation of traffic incident duration is of great importance for traffic incident management. Previous studies have proposed models for traffic incident duration prediction; however, most of these studies focus on the total duration and could not update prediction results in real-time. From a traveler’s perspective, the relevant factor is the residual duration of the impact of the traffic incident. Besides, few (if any) studies have used dynamic traffic flow parameters in the prediction models. This paper aims to propose a framework to fill these gaps.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper proposes a framework based on the multi-layer perception (MLP) and long short-term memory (LSTM) model. The proposed methodology integrates traffic incident-related factors and real-time traffic flow parameters to predict the residual traffic incident duration. To validate the effectiveness of the framework, traffic incident data and traffic flow data from Shanghai Zhonghuan Expressway are used for modeling training and testing.

Findings

Results show that the model with 30-min time window and taking both traffic volume and speed as inputs performed best. The area under the curve values exceed 0.85 and the prediction accuracies exceed 0.75. These indicators demonstrated that the model is appropriate for this study context. The model provides new insights into traffic incident duration prediction.

Research limitations/implications

The incident samples applied by this study might not be enough and the variables are not abundant. The number of injuries and casualties, more detailed description of the incident location and other variables are expected to be used to characterize the traffic incident comprehensively. The framework needs to be further validated through a sufficiently large number of variables and locations.

Practical implications

The framework can help reduce the impacts of incidents on the safety of efficiency of road traffic once implemented in intelligent transport system and traffic management systems in future practical applications.

Originality/value

This study uses two artificial neural network methods, MLP and LSTM, to establish a framework aiming at providing accurate and time-efficient information on traffic incident duration in the future for transportation operators and travelers. This study will contribute to the deployment of emergency management and urban traffic navigation planning.
