Abstract

Purpose

The main purpose of this study is to explain the combined effects of host country weak network ties and absorptive capacity on the innovative foreign knowledge inflows of international high-tech small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Design/methodology/approach

Data are drawn from the two largest and most authoritative German Federal Government census-databases of biotech and nanotech SMEs. A structured survey questionnaire was administered and regression analysis adopted.

Findings

This study demonstrates weak network ties in the host country and developing absorptive capacity produce a combined effect that positively influences international high-tech SMEs innovative foreign knowledge inflows. Also, host country weak network ties and absorptive capacity when considered separately, each respectively, positively influence innovative foreign knowledge inflows.

Practical implications

The results help inform key personnel in international high-tech SMEs about the relevance of host country weak network ties and absorptive capacity for foreign knowledge inflows. In addition, the results help policymakers and think-tanks to promote tailored advice and guidance e.g. those policymakers implementing the EU Entrepreneurship 2020 Action Plan.

Originality/value

There is a recent call in the literature to combine network theory and absorptive capacity theory to better explain knowledge creation in the context of international high-tech SMEs knowledge sourcing. By addressing this call, the study provides a more refined and comprehensive account of international high-tech SMEs innovative foreign knowledge inflows.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the energy-saving effect and mechanism of serpentine as lubricant additive in the simulated condition.

Design/methodology/approach

An ABLT-1 bearing test machine was used for 1,350 hours and an MM-W1 three-pin-on-disk apparatus was used to investigate its anti-friction effect. The worn surface was characterized by scanning electron microscopy equipped with energy dispersive spectroscopy.

Findings

The results show that the energy-saving effect was improved after adding serpentine powder in oil and that both the friction coefficient and mass loss were dramatically decreased. The analysis on worn surface layer demonstrates that an auto-reconditioning surface layer was formed on the worn surface, which was responsible for the decrease in friction and wear.

Originality/value

The simulation test for the metal bearing was conducted over 1,350 hours using lubricant with and without serpentine powder. The addition of serpentine powder enhanced the energy-saving rate over time, stabilizing at about 13 per cent after 1,000 hours. An auto-reconditioning surface layer was formed on the surfaces of disassembled bearing lubricated with serpentine doped oil, resulting in dramatic decrease of both the friction coefficient and the mass loss. In addition to normal load and the accumulation of serpentine powder in the furrows and scratches of the deformed layer, the formation of the surface layer was possibly related to the substrate deformation induced by friction force.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop an analytical framework to categorize the quality of industrial relations in foreign affiliates. Using the case of foreign affiliates in Germany, this paper further explores what factors shape the quality of industrial relations in foreign affiliates.

Design/methodology/approach

Given the scarcity of research on industrial relations in foreign affiliates, this paper is based on conceptual work as well as on a comparative case investigation of 21 foreign affiliates in Germany, involving informants from both labor and management.

Findings

Industrial relations in foreign affiliates in Germany can take four different qualities, based on the following: social partnership; conflict partnership; latently adversarial; and adversarial relations. While previous literature focused on country-of-origin effects, the authors’ case-based investigation further revealed that both affiliate effects and multinational corporation (MNC) effects have a strong impact on the quality of industrial relations in foreign affiliates in Germany.

Originality/value

This paper provides systematic evidence on the presumption that micro-organizational and MNC-specific factors are necessary to gain a deeper understanding of industrial relations in MNCs. Moreover, this paper contributes to the discussion on the quality of industrial relations in foreign affiliates in Germany, by placing results from both single-case studies and management surveys into perspective.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the cable-supported bridges more efficiently by building the finite element model with the spatial combined cable element.

Design/methodology/approach

The spatial combined cable element with rigid arms and elastic segments was derived. By using the analytical solution of the elastic catenary to establish the flexibility matrix at the end of the cable segment and adding it to the flexibility matrix at the ends of the two elastic segments, the flexibility matrix at the end of the cable body is obtained. Then the stiffness matrix of the cable body is established and the end force vector of cable body is given. Using the displacement transformation relationship between the two ends of the rigid arm, the stiffness matrix of the combined cable element is derived. By assigning zero to the length of the elastic segment(s) or/and the rigid arm(s), many subdivisions of the combined cable element can be obtained, even the elastic catenary element.

Findings

The examples in this field and specially designed examples proved the correctness of the proposed spatial combined cable element.

Originality/value

The combined cable element proposed in this study can be used for the design and analysis of cable-stayed bridges. Case studies show that it is able to simulate cable accurately and could also be used to simulate the suspenders in arch bridges as well in suspension bridges.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present performance comparison of fiber sheet-strengthened reinforced concrete (RC) beams bonded with geopolymer and epoxy resin under ambient and fire conditions.

Design/methodology/approach

This study presents experimental results of bending tests at ambient temperature and fire resistance tests on two control beams and eight fiber sheet-strengthened RC beams. The test variables include fiber sheet type (carbon fiber [CF] and basalt fiber [BF] sheet), number of layers of fiber sheet (one and two layers) and adhesive agent type (geopolymers and epoxy resin). Data generated from these tests were used to evaluate and compare the strengthening effectiveness of CF-reinforced polymer (CFRP) and CF-reinforced geopolymer (CFRG) at ambient temperature and under fire exposure conditions.

Findings

Test results clearly show that the CFRG system can provide good strengthening effectiveness on RC beams at ambient temperature, as the CFRP system, owing to excellent bond properties of geopolymers. Although geopolymers possess better bonding properties at high temperature than organic matrix, the strengthened beams bonded with geopolymer do not exhibit better fire resistance than that those bonded with epoxy resin, owing to early falling-off of fire insulation. Thus, in CFRG-strengthened beams, relevant measures are to be taken to minimize falling-off of fire insulation to achieve good fire resistance.

Originality/value

The presented results are from unique fire tests and provide valuable insight (and information) on the performance of fiber sheet-strengthened RC beams bonded with geopolymer and epoxy resin under ambient and fire conditions.

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to trace the way in which a popular ritual became one of Vietnam’s most important festivals, elevated as a celebration of national heroism and charts its gradual transformation in modern society.

Design/methodology/approach

This research focuses on the combination of a fertility rite and narratives of St Gióng based on nationalism or heroism created a special festival reflecting many traditional cultural characteristics of Vietnam and the Việt people and the transformation of St Gióng from a mythological to a national symbol of heroism in anti-invader history was recorded in texts.

Findings

The paper casts light on the mythologization and historicization of St Gióng in Vietnam’s particular historical context by decoding the Gióng symbol as a core element of the folktales and myths about St Gióng to understand the formation and development of St Gióng in the cultural history of Vietnam.

Research limitations/implications

The paper is not exploring the Gióng symbol within a larger cultural context of nationalism and ethnosymbolic approach in a comparison of national symbolism and heroism.

Practical implications

The paper includes implications for advised scholars to conduct further exploration of the symbol and myth of not only St Gióng in Vietnam but also Kubera in India and Vaisravana in China to connect Kubera, Vaisravana and St Gióng under the connection of literal myth and heroic symbol.

Social implications

The paper shows how processes of historicizing myth and mythologizing history are important features of Vietnamese socio-historical research.

Originality/value

The paper shows how a fertility rite became a historical festival and the figure of St Gióng became a symbol of patriotic heroism.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the organisational and procedural arrangements for healthcare reform in China, and describe the role of social values in the relevant decision‐making process.

Design/methodology/approach

An analysis of recent developments aimed at achieving universal coverage in China was undertaken in the context of describing the influence of underlying social values.

Findings

The key underlying social value was found to be social solidarity. Other values were implicit rather than explicitly stated, and were subservient to the overall aim of comprehensive coverage.

Originality/value

The paper shows that China is embarking on the largest‐scale health reforms in the world. There is an eagerness to share experiences with other countries in an attempt to ensure the success of the reforms. There is an increasing understanding of the need to make the values underpinning the reforms more explicit and, in particular, those concerned with efficiency and appropriateness.

Abstract

Purpose

Based on a duality approach, this study examines the path from utilitarian value via cognitive trust versus hedonic value via affective trust in online shopping well-being. This study also explores the moderating role of extraversion in the relationships between shopping value and trust.

Design/methodology/approach

A data set collected from 648 online consumers in Vietnam was used to validate the measures employing confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and to test the hypotheses using structural equation modelling (SEM).

Findings

The results show that online shopping well-being is determined hedonically and affectively rather than in an utilitarian manner and cognitively. Affective trust positively contributes to online shopping well-being, but cognitive trust does not. The dual-process associations between utilitarian shopping value and cognitive trust and between hedonic shopping value and cognitive trust were also confirmed. Finally, extraversion moderates the cognitive and affective associations between shopping values and trust.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the literature on online shopping by applying a dual perspective to confirm the role of hedonic shopping value and affective trust in positively determining online shopping well-being. As a result, this study provides a deeper understanding about if and why online shopping well-being is affect-based, instead of cognition-based.

Purpose

There is an increasing popularity for the continuum robot in minimally invasive surgery owing to its compliance and dexterity. However, the dexterity takes the challenges in loading and precise control because of the absence of the shape tracking for the continuum robot. The purpose of this paper is to propose a new type of continuum manipulator with variable stiffness that can track the bending shape timely.

Design/methodology/approach

The low-melting-point alloy (LMPA) is used to implement the stiffness variation and shape detection for the continuum manipulator. A conceptual design for a single module is presented, and the principle of stiffness control based on the established static model is formulated. Afterward, a shape detection method is introduced in which the shape of the continuum manipulator can be detected by measuring the resistance of every LMPA. Finally, the effect of the proposed variable stiffness method is verified by simulation; the variable stiffness and shape detection methods are evaluated by experiments.

Findings

The results from the simulations and experiments indicate that the designed continuum manipulator has the ability of stiffness variation over 42.3% and the shape detection method has high precision.

Originality/value

Compared with conventional structures, the novel manipulator has a simpler structure and integrates the stiffness variation and shape detection capabilities with the LMPA. The proposed method is promising, and it can be conveniently extended to other continuum manipulators.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of technology progress on carbon intensity in China. Abatement of carbon emission has become one of the most important targets for the Chinese government. Numerous studies confirm that technology progress is the main factor responsible for reduction in CI. However, very few studies analyze the impacts of technology progress on CI for various regions. There is also inadequate knowledge on the transmission mechanisms of the impacts. These are the motivations for this research.

Design/methodology/approach

Given energy consumption and CO2 emissions, an improved MLPI, which stands for the generalized technology progress related to energy and environment, is introduced and decomposed into technical and efficiency changes. Using a panel data of 30 provinces from 1997 to 2012, the authors construct different panel data models to investigate the effects of technology progress (and its decomposition elements) on CI.

Findings

Results show that technology progress is conducive for reducing CI, with the main factor being technical change. It also finds that the two components of technology progress have completely different effects in the three regions of China. Dynamic panel data models with threshold effects indicate that capital deepening enforces and weakens the negative effects of technical change and efficiency change on CI.

Originality/value

The above conclusions provide new evidences for policy-makers with respect to capital deepening, technical innovation and allocative efficiency enhancement with a view to achieving CI reduction.
