Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to examine the use of projective techniques for published marketing and management research in the USA. The paper emphasizes the influence that McClelland, Atkinson, Clark and Lowell's study, The Achievement Motive (1953), has had on subsequent research. That work applied quantitative analysis to responses obtained using projective techniques.

Design/methodology/approach

The approaches used in this paper consist of descriptive historical methods and a literature review. The historical analysis was conducted using Kuhn's 1967 conception of paradigms, showing that the paradigm from which projective techniques emerged – psychoanalysis – failed to gather many adherents outside the discipline of psychology. The paradigm failed to gain adherents in US colleges of business, although there are some exceptions. One exception is managerial motivation research, which built on the traditions of The Achievement Motive. The literature review suggests that, despite lacking institutional bases that could be used to develop new adherents to the paradigm, projective techniques were used by a number of researchers, but this research was marginalized, criticized or misunderstood by adherents of the dominant paradigm, positivism.

Findings

Some of the criticism directed at projective techniques research by positivists involves criticism of the paradigm's assumption that humans have an unconscious, and a belief that projective techniques are unreliable and invalid. This paper points out that a growing number of cognitive psychologists now accept the existence of an unconscious, and measure it using the “implicit association test.” This paper argues that the IAT is an associational test is the tradition of word association. Moreover, the literature review shows that projective techniques are much more reliable than critics contend, and exhibit greater predictive validity than many positivist instruments.

Research limitations/implications

As with all literature reviews, this one does not include every published research study using projective techniques. As a consequence, the conclusions may not be generalizable to the studies excluded from the analysis.

Originality/value

The paper is one of the few to assemble the literature on projective techniques used in several disciplines, and draw conclusions from these about the applicability of the techniques to market research.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to examine the use of visual research methods in the area of recent marketing and consumer research.

Design/methodology/approach

Content analysis was used to investigate visual method in articles from Journal of Consumer Research; Journal of Marketing; Journal of Marketing Research; Journal of Marketing Management; Consumption, Markets, and Culture and Qualitative Market Research. Abstract, key words and methodology sections of all articles published in these six journals from 2002 to 2012 were scanned to identify which of them applied visual methods in their studies. The selected articles were then closely analyzed to discover how visual research methods were used and in what manner did they contribute to the marketing and consumer behavior discipline.

Findings

This study found that a growing number of marketing and consumer researchers utilized visual methods to achieve their research goals in various approaches such as cultural inventories, projective techniques and social artifacts. Visual method is useful when research deals with children who are not fully developed and able to comprehend text messages and also advantageous when investigating informants’ metaphorical thoughts about a subject or the content of their mind.

Originality/value

This paper examined how visual methods have assisted marketing and consumer researchers in achieving their goals and suggests when and how researchers can utilize the visual methods for future research.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this review is to offer a summary of visual and projective research methods that have been applied or may be applied fruitfully in an Asian context. Examples are provided and a delineation of the strengths and weaknesses of the methods is made.

Design/methodology/approach

This is a review article covering a number of different relevant methods and briefly reviewing studies that have been conducted in Asia using these methods.

Findings

The paper reviews five different uses of qualitative visual and projective methods in Asian consumer and market research: as archival data for analysis; as direct stimuli for data collection; as projective stimuli for data collection; as a means for recording qualitative data; and as a means for presenting qualitative findings.

Research limitations/implications

It is suggested that Asia contains a rich visual culture and that the research techniques reviewed offer compelling means for enhancing data collection, data analysis, and findings presentations from qualitative market and consumer research in Asia.

Originality/value

The paper brings together a diverse array of prior research illustrating the potential of the methods reviewed. In addition to discussing this research a number of references are provided for those wishing to examine these methods in greater detail and apply them to their own research.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this research is to extend the results of previous studies regarding corporate reputation scales and identify new and specific items relevant for studying global corporate reputation from a customer’s point of view.

Design/methodology/approach

This research was based on the qualitative projective “Album on Line” (AOL) technique. The authors used a sample of 12 French consumers distributed equally between affective and cognitive scenarios. An individual-difference multidimensional scaling approach (INDSCAL) was applied to display the overall semantic space among generated items.

Findings

The exploratory AOL approach generated 62 items related to both cognitive and affective orientations characterizing online and offline corporate reputation. The results uncovered six semantic clusters for each scenario. All in all, seven new items could be added in the process of building a new global corporate reputation measurement scale by adding: avant-garde, singularity, exclusivity, savings, return policy, freeness and speed.

Research limitations/implications

This research makes it possible to propose a new global corporate reputation measurement scale with sound psychometric properties. This scale will be adapted for click and mortars and pure players. This paper unlocks future perspectives by suggesting a causal model that integrates online corporate reputation and its main antecedents and consequences.

Practical implications

From a managerial perspective, this research offers insights to managers with the main orientations surrounding the components of global corporate reputation. Moreover, the AOL mappings delineate which quadrants the managers would like to be fitted into or avoid, and hence define more precisely which key elements should be stressed or discarded.

Originality/value

This research outlines AOL, an original qualitative projective technique that can be used to understand customers’ thoughts, which are stocked and collected as images. Moreover, this research intends to analyze the gathered data using both INDSCAL and fuzzy k-means cluster analysis to reduce conventional biases related to subjectivity.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose a novel registration method using Euclidean reconstruction and natural features tracking for AR‐based assembly guidance systems.

Design/methodology/approach

The method operates in two steps: offline Euclidean reconstruction and online tracking. Offline stage involves obtaining the structure of scene using Euclidean reconstruction technique. The classification trees are constructed using affine transform for online initialization. In tracking, the classification‐based wide baseline matching strategy and Td,d test are used to get a fast and accurate initialization for the first frame after which a modified optical flow tracker is used to fulfill the task of feature tracking in the real‐time video sequences. The four specified points are transferred to the current image to compute the registration matrix for augmentation.

Findings

Firstly, Euclidean reconstruction was used instead of projective reconstruction to get the projections of predefined features. Compared with the six points needed in projective reconstruction‐based method, this method can run normally even when only four features are successfully tracked. Secondly, an adaptive strategy was proposed to adjust the classification trees using the tracked features in online stage by which one can initialize or reinitialize the system, even with large difference between the first and reference images.

Originality/value

Some indoor and outdoor experiments are provided to validate the performance of the proposed method.

Abstract

Purpose

Given little light has been shed on the preference of Generation Z tourists or tourists from different cultural backgrounds toward service robot preference in hospitality contexts, this study aims to explore robot service preferences in the accommodation sector in the Chinese market, with a specific focus of Generation Z customers.

Design/methodology/approach

This study followed an exploratory sequential research design including two qualitative methods (i.e. projective techniques and semistructured interviews) to reach its objectives.

Findings

This study suggests that service robots are more preferred for routine tasks and gender differences exist in the preference of service robot’s anthropomorphism level. The preferences are driven by four factors based on different levels of hedonic and utilitarian values: experienced-hedonic value, utilitarian-hedonic value, task-relevant value and utilitarian value.

Research limitations/implications

First, because of the exploratory nature of this study, the data interpretation is unavoidably subjective; therefore, the results can be confirmed by using a more rigorous research method. Second, this study only focuses on the preference of Generation Z customers in China in the hotel sector; as the cultural differences exist in different countries, this study’s findings cannot be readily generalized across populations and service contexts. Finally, this study fails to dig into the effect of gender differences on varying levels of anthropomorphic attributes.

Practical implications

As hotels adopt service robots more widely, managers need to identify customers’ service preferences and prioritize tasks between robots and human resources for more efficient service. Particularly important is understanding the benefits and challenges of specific robot implementations rather than looking for a one-size-fits-all mode of operation.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study to understand robot service preference with regard to specific tourist groups in illustrating their preference for service delivery. Drawing on self-determination theory, this study potentially provides a theoretical basis for hotel service process optimization.

研究发现

研究表明, 顾客对服务机器人日常服务事项表现出明显偏好, 但是, 对于服务机器人的拟人化水平偏好存在性别化差异。根据享乐主义和实用主义价值的不同维度角来看, 游客偏好差异的产生主要受到四种价值取向驱动, 包括:1)享乐—体验价值驱动; 2)实用—享乐价值驱动; 3)任务相关价值驱动; 4)实用价值驱动。

研究局限/启示

由于本研究是探索性研究, 且对投射技术和半结构化访谈数据的解释具有一定主观性, 建议未来通过更加严格的研究方法来验证分析结果。此外, 由于是在中国酒店行业特殊的语境和背景下进行的研究, 存在一定跨国文化差异, 其结论在跨种族和跨服务背景的适用性仍待进一步验证。最后, 本研究未能进一步深入探讨性别差异对不同层次拟人化属性的影响。

实践启示

随着服务机器人在酒店业的普及, 管理者需要识别顾客的服务偏好, 在具体任务分配过程中, 需要对服务机器人和员工的使用安排进行优先等级划分, 以此全面提高服务效率。最重要的是, 要充分了解使用机器人的利与弊, 而不是通过一刀切的方式管理酒店服务。

原创性/价值

本研究首次对特定游客群体(Z世代)对于服务机器人使用偏好进行了研究, 从自主决策理论出发阐述了他们对服务提供者的使用偏好差异及其驱动因素, 为优化酒店服务流程提供了理论指导和实证证据。

Diseño/metodología/enfoque

Este estudio se diseñó bajo una investigación secuencial exploratoria que incluyó dos métodos cualitativos (es decir, técnicas proyectivas y entrevistas semiestructuradas) para alcanzar sus objetivos.

Propósito

Dado que se ha arrojado poca luz sobre la preferencia de los turistas de la Generación Z o de los turistas de diferentes orígenes culturales hacia los servicios de robótica en el sector alojativo, este estudio tiene como objetivo explorar las preferencias de servicios de robots en el sector del alojamiento en China, con un enfoque específico hacia la Generación Z.

Conclusiones

Este estudio sugiere que los robots de servicio son más preferidos para tareas rutinarias, existiendo diferencias de género en la preferencia del nivel de antropomorfismo del robot de servicio. Las preferencias están impulsadas por cuatro factores basados en diferentes niveles de valores hedónicos y utilitarios: 1) valor hedónico experimentado, 2) valor hedónico utilitario, 3) valor relevante para la tarea y 4) valor utilitario.

Limitaciones/implicaciones de la investigación

Primero, debido a la naturaleza exploratoria de este estudio, la interpretación de los datos es inevitablemente subjetiva, por lo tanto, los resultados pueden confirmarse utilizando un método de investigación más riguroso. Además, este estudio solo se enfoca en la preferencia de los clientes de la Generación Z para el sector hotelero en China, ya que las diferencias culturales existentes en diferentes países, no pueden generalizarse fácilmente entre poblaciones y contextos de servicio. Por último, este estudio no profundiza en el efecto de las diferencias de género en los distintos niveles de atributos antropomórficos.

Implicaciones prácticas

A medida que los hoteles vayan adoptando servicios con robots, los gerentes deberían identificar las preferencias de servicio de los clientes y priorizar tareas para robots o para recursos humanos cara a un servicio más eficiente. Particularmente importante es comprender los beneficios y desafíos de las implementaciones de robots específicos, en lugar de buscar un modo de operación único para todos.

Originalidad/valor

Este es el primer estudio que comprende la preferencia de servicios de robots con respecto a grupos de turistas específicos para ilustrar su preferencia por la prestación de servicios. Basándose en la teoría de la autodeterminación, este estudio proporciona potencialmente una base teórica para la optimización del proceso de servicio del hotel.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to explore the socio-cultural meanings of functional foods for Tunisian consumers and to understand how these meanings shape their preferences and practices in the particular context of a Middle-East and North African (MENA) region.

Design/methodology/approach

A constructivist perspective based on multi-qualitative methods was designed allowing data collection in a natural setting through focus groups interviews, individual in-depth interviews and projective techniques among Tunisian consumers.

Findings

Findings show the complexity and importance of conscious and unconscious non-health-related socio-cultural factors in the construction and acceptance of functional foods by the Tunisian consumer. Common sense knowledge, social environment and tradition shape the constructions and practices of functional foods. These factors may act as a shortcut to compensate for unhealthy behaviour and as a social marker to reflect trendiness and identity.

Research limitations/implications

The findings are specific to the Tunisian setting and may be not transferable to other settings.

Practical implications

The role of information is central in functional food acceptance. Communication on health effects should consider not only the formal nutritional health benefit but also lay knowledge.

Social implications

The findings of this research contribute in the government’s understanding of Tunisian’s constructions of health and well-being by suggesting that besides health motives, non-health-related factors such as lay knowledge, social influences and conspicuous consumption play an important role in functional foods choice.

Originality/value

This paper contributes to extend functional foods literature by exploring the complex interconnected conscious and unconscious socio-cultural constructions behind functional food choice. It contributes also to the understanding of the food consumer behaviour in the specific cultural context of the Arab-Muslim MENA region, an under investigated setting.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper proposes that a developed awareness of and openness to diversity supports people management and also the ability to work in an ever more complex business environment. Diversity begins from an understanding of one's own diversity – the richness of one's own history, skills, capabilities and passions. This diverse awareness is a key management and leadership competence. The paper aims to describe how the V&A uses its own diverse collections to advance this perspective. It seeks to focus on the V&A Innovative Management & Leadership program, a Masters accredited development program, and the use of arts‐based learning methods.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper describes two arts based learning approaches: projective techniques and illustration of essence methods.

Findings

The paper analyses career progression of V&A staff on the innovative program. It finds a retention rate of 77 per cent and a promotion rate of 50 per cent and suggests this correlates to a saving of approximately two salaries per ten participants each year.

Practical implications

The paper promotes the use of arts based learning methods and it also recognizes the importance of context. The V&A works with “what is”, i.e. what its environment provides. The paper considers whether this is a wider methodology that might be employed in non arts organizations.

Originality/value

With the rising use of art‐based methods in organizational development and change, this paper supports the suggestion that there is a large research agenda left to engage. It proposes a more focused piece of research with both arts and non arts organizations.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to achieve three objectives: to explore the perception of consumers about supersized foods (in both pre- and post-consumption scenarios), to identify why consumers prefer supersized options over other available options and to determine the types of situations that push consumers to make such decisions.

Design/methodology/approach

This qualitative study uses the triangulation of projective methods, coupled with semi-structured interviews with 120 participants. The data was collected from major cities of Pakistan, using a convenient sample of 25 semi-structured interviews, 35 narratives and 60 sentence completions and constructions analyzed by performing thematic analysis.

Findings

The findings indicate that the antecedents of the purchase of supersized food include price/quantity trade-off, hunger, liking and the social setting of consumption. Such purchase decisions also lead to consequences such as saving after purchase, health concerns, food waste, guilt and satisfaction. The findings also reveal the factors that play a dual role of an antecedent and a consequence: sharing, social status, quantity and leisure time.

Practical implications

The knowledge of factors that make consumers select supersized foods can help marketers design deals that can control overconsumption and food waste. Instead of only focusing on the motivations behind the purchase of supersized foods, the authors also discuss the aspects of food purchase and consumption.

Originality/value

This study advances the literature on purchase decision, consumption and post-consumption of supersized foods, providing insights for food retailers, regulators and policymakers.

¿Cuándo y por qué los consumidores eligen alimentos de gran tamaño?

Propósito

Este estudio busca alcanzar tres objetivos: 1) explorar la percepción de los consumidores sobre los alimentos de gran tamaño (tanto en escenarios previos como posteriores al consumo), 2) identificar por qué los consumidores prefieren las opciones de gran tamaño sobre otras opciones disponibles, y 3) determinar qué tipo de situaciones empujan a los consumidores a tomar tales decisiones.

Diseño

Este estudio cualitativo emplea la triangulación de métodos proyectivos, junto con entrevistas semiestructuradas con 120 participantes. Los datos se recopilaron en las principales ciudades de Pakistán, utilizando una muestra conveniente de 25 entrevistas semiestructuradas, 35 narraciones y 60 terminaciones y construcciones de frases analizadas mediante la realización de un análisis temático.

Conclusiones

Los resultados indican que los antecedentes de la compra de alimentos de gran tamaño incluyen la relación precio/cantidad, el hambre, el gusto y el entorno social del consumo. Estas decisiones de compra también conllevan consecuencias como el ahorro después de la compra, la preocupación por la salud, el desperdicio de alimentos, el sentimiento de culpa y la satisfacción. Los resultados también revelan los factores que desempeñan un doble papel de antecedente y consecuencia: compartir, estatus social, cantidad y tiempo de ocio.

Implicaciones prácticas

El conocimiento de los factores que hacen que los consumidores seleccionen alimentos de gran tamaño puede ayudar a los responsables de marketing a diseñar ofertas que puedan controlar el consumo excesivo y el desperdicio de alimentos. En lugar de centrarse únicamente en las motivaciones que subyacen a la compra de alimentos de mayor tamaño, los autores también analizan los aspectos de la compra y el consumo de alimentos.

Originalidad

Este estudio supone un avance en la literatura sobre la decisión de compra, el consumo y el posconsumo de los alimentos de gran tamaño, proporcionando información a los minoristas de alimentos, a los reguladores y a los responsables políticos.
