Abstract

Purpose

In the literature there is limited knowledge about how to prepare students for a corporate entrepreneurial career. The purpose is therefore to develop a framework for understanding the role corporate development projects play in corporate entrepreneurship education, and to examine the potential role of the design of the project. The study defines a corporate development project as a project being part of an academic education to provide students with working experiences situated in an experiential learning process.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on work-integrated learning literature, the authors first develop a conceptual framework. Thereafter, they undertake a multiple case study using data from a Master's Program in Corporate Entrepreneurship. Starting from the conceptual framework, the authors employ deductive thematic analysis in order to analyze data and finally to develop an elaborated framework.

Findings

In the framework, the authors identify and label five categories of learning outcomes from the corporate development project. The framework helps understand the interplay between the different learning outcomes in students' learning process and shows how the design of the project shapes the learning process.

Practical implications

The framework can assist educators in designing and integrating the corporate development project as a key module within a corporate entrepreneurship academic program.

Originality/value

Based on the framework, the study develops the knowledge about the design of corporate entrepreneurship education. Future research should test the framework using data from other academic programs in corporate entrepreneurship.

Abstract

In this article a practical framework is proposed, that can be used to organise the activities related to the selection‐process of technology development projects. The framework is based upon recent literature and application at DAF Trucks Company. A technology development project has a long way to go, before it contributes to the productivity of the company. This long lead‐time causes uncertainties and risks. Changes in market‐preferences and upcoming alternative technologies can prematurely make the developing technology become obsolete. In order to reduce the uncertainties and risks, the main technology opportunities and threats need to be identified as early as possible and submitted to a validation process. The technology opportunities and threats then have to be moulded into well‐defined project‐propositions. Out of the project‐propositions those projects should be selected that will best meet the long‐term objectives of the company. This paper is intended to be used as a reference for companies whowant to improve their technology development selection process.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to show how Tai Chi (or T’ai Chi ch’uan) philosophy might be used in global project development. Collected case studies support a Tai Chi-based framework for global project teams to reduce stress and improve decision making through exercises, storytelling, and martial arts practices. The authors first proposed a model or procedural framework based on experiential knowledge from practicing Tai Chi while managing projects.

Design/methodology/approach

Analyzing case studies from knowledge managers, project managers, and executive leaders, the researchers collected data on applying the framework from a retrospective case study and from two observational case studies during project development. Tai Chi-based communications and exercises were shown to support critical thinking, knowledge sharing, and problem solving. The proposed framework and four-step procedure build on a global perspective to cultural awareness, creativity, and motivation as well as specific Tai Chi-based tactics, techniques, and operations for knowledge management. This preliminary study looks at improving collaboration in a competitive environment while supporting health, wellness, and work-life enjoyment.

Findings

Early research results suggest that teams and individuals working on projects and practicing Tai Chi might develop more cohesive strategies and improve soft skills during their integration of Eastern and Western philosophies.

Research limitations/implications

Used case studies methodology, which provided examples of using Tai Chi during projects. Qualitative data used to develop the proposed framework. Also, interviews and discussion reviews conducted for additional validation collected on framework.

Practical implications

It is a pioneering, preliminary study. Future research with outcomes-based data from project managers using Tai Chi recommended.

Originality/value

The integration of Eastern and Western philosophies into a framework for team project and knowledge management was shown to support cohesive strategies, improve soft skills, and strengthen decision making.

Abstract

Arises from a concern with the relationship between providers of management education programmes and their client groups. Addresses two issues: what the author considers to be the core requirements necessary for the design of effective tailor‐made management education programmes; how this approach has been affected by the introduction of the project framework by the Overseas Development Administration (ODA). Outlines the core factors required in providing effective management education and client‐institutions for it to take place. Considers how to create a productive working relationship between the provider and client institutions. Examines the factors which contributed to the ODA adopting the project framework. Suggests that the prime motive was the need for accountability within the civil service, with direct consequences for the manner in which projectization has been implemented. Critically analyses the approach and contrasts it with the approach of Germany′s Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit. Finally, examines the recent ODA “Logical Framework Approach and TeamUP” and suggests that creative use of this initiative could address the concerns mentioned previously.

Abstract

Purpose

This study proposes a framework for collaborative building information modeling BIM implementation in construction and development companies in the Brazilian architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) market. The study addresses aspects concerning BIM collaboration, levels of adoption and maturity, classification of BIM objects and use of tools.

Design/methodology/approach

The study conclusions are based on a bibliographic review and on active participation in a BIM implementation process conducted with two construction and development companies that participated in the study, which allowed examining the practical problems of the elaboration of BIM in various technical specialties, and the proposition of a framework to help overcome these limitations.

Findings

The research identified the importance of adopting standardized methods to develop models, establishing common classifications for objects to allow the use by different stakeholders on 3D, 4D and 5D processes, in a context that information is scattered and, in many cases, divergent across different companies and even different areas from the same company.

Originality/value

The study presents a practical set of methods and tools to be used within a context common to the Brazilian AEC market, on which construction and development companies are responsible for the management of the design and construction phase of a building. The recommendations of the research take into account the shortage of nationwide frameworks and classification standards, so it contributes to filling some gaps of current literature that cover theoretical aspects of guidance documents for BIM implementation but do not detail specific practical applications within a determined context. The limitations of the framework proposed are its focus on establishing context-specific guidelines, which may not be suitable universally.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to introduce a project development framework (PDF) aiming to find socially beneficial public infrastructure provision (PIP) projects in the transport sector. From this perspective, the current paper focuses on the framework of finding an optimized PIP organizational model based on which the projects will be both economically and financially viable and will meet the interests of all the stakeholders. From this perspective, the objective of the current paper is to find in the design phase of the projects, a PIP organizational model for the transport sector, that generates the socially required economic internal rate of return (hereinafter EIRR), thus providing the society with the added social values from the relevant infrastructure projects and, at the same time, ensuring relevant level of the financial internal rate of return (hereinafter FIRR) for the private companies interested in investing in relevant assets. This allows finding socially beneficial PIP organizational model according to the adopted PDF.

Design/methodology/approach

The methodology aiming to develop the PDF focuses on analyzing both the economic and financial effectiveness of the PIP projects by exploring different combinations of available options for business, contractual, and financial models of relevant projects. Based on the example of the Republic of Armenia it is shown how the EIRR can be calculated for the PIP projects using the adopted PDF by taking into consideration the transport sector specifics of the country.

Findings

The main advantage of the designed framework is that it focuses on the calculation of the EIRR not only based on the different design options, but also explores the influence of the chosen procurement models on the economic output of the projects. The identification and the calculation of the positive and negative externalities (benefits and losses of the projects) in the economic values within the current PDF serve as the main instrument for the development of the PIP optimized socially beneficial/viable organizational models. The main privilege of the paper is that it considers the social aspect of the project together with the financing aspect without extruding any interests of the parties.

Originality/value

The uniqueness and the novelty of the adopted PDF is that it considers the efficiency of the PIP projects based on the analysis of not only the design options that influence the economic and financial output of the projects, but also compares the impact of the different combinations of the existing privatization, partnership, contractual, financial, and business models on the level of the EIRR and the FIRR. The socially beneficial infrastructure (economically viable) model generates economically and financially viable projects. Thus, the public partner is provided with the highest social value while the private partner is guaranteed a desired financial return.

Abstract

Purpose

Product development projects can be utilized to create not only new products or services but also competitively important capabilities on how to work with product development. The resulting capabilities can be, and often are, as important as the product itself. Although there is potential for an organization to improve product development performance, most organizations can learn even more from their development experiences. A reliance on post‐project reviews to share knowledge across projects is doomed to fail, since it usually is of low priority and does not capture the complexity of development projects. The aim of this research is to investigate what organizations can do to reduce the effect of losing valuable experience gained in product development projects.

Design/methodology/approach

A multiple case study approach, using both qualitative and quantitative data, is used to perform a study of two high‐tech product development organizations with respect to their inter‐project improvement activities. A framework concerning inter‐project improvement is presented, containing concepts such as levels of learning, improvement content, and axes of improvement.

Findings

To avoid losing valuable experience, an organization should use multiple strategies to share knowledge across projects. Examples of successful strategies are to use a well‐established product development process, professional full‐time project managers as well as modularization of the product.

Originality/value

Although research on organizational learning in product development has increased significantly during the last few years, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of inter‐project improvement by combining perspectives from quality management, organizational learning, and knowledge management.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aimed to provide a framework that includes the principles of sustainable construction to evaluate their application in the construction of government building projects in various environmental, economic, and social aspects distributed over the project phases throughout its life cycle.

Design/methodology/approach

Qualitative methods from literature review and analysis of sustainability assessment tools were used to design the framework. The designed framework included six main categories, comprising 19 indicators that include sustainable building principles to assess application levels in government construction projects. It was used to evaluate applying sustainability practices in Jordanian government construction projects. 133 questionnaires were distributed to a convenience sample of three government institutions concerned with the design, implementation, and management of government buildings in Jordan.

Findings

After collecting the quantitative data, the results showed that there is an application of six sustainability principles during the initial planning, analysis, and design stages of Jordanian government construction projects. The results focused on the application levels in social sustainability principles versus environmental and economical, especially in the operating stages during the project life cycle.

Originality/value

This study contributes by providing a tool to evaluate the sustainability of government construction projects and increase the efficiency and effectiveness of these types of buildings in both the short and long term by making them more sustainable. Subsequently, recommendations are made on reorienting government construction projects toward a sustainable building approach.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to understand how to build and implement information and communication technology (i.e. ICT) to help vulnerable people when significant social, cultural and economic barriers exist between the stakeholders.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors followed an action research approach to design and implement a mobile health hypertension education application to help India's most vulnerable populations. The authors used interpretive analysis, guided by the sustainable livelihoods framework, to uncover key findings.

Findings

Successfully implementing information and communication technology for development (ICT4D) requires understanding that all stakeholders (i.e. donors, facilitators and the beneficiaries) have important assets to contribute. Facilitators play an important role in connecting donors to the beneficiaries and fostering cultural humility in donors so that the donors will understand the role beneficiaries play in success. Stakeholders may use the ICT4D in unintended ways that both improve the people's health and increase some beneficiaries' financial livelihood.

Research limitations/implications

This research expands the definition of information systems success when implementing ICT4D in resource-constrained environments. Success is more than creating an mHealth app that was easy for beneficiaries to use and where they learned based on a pre- and post-test statistical analysis. Success involved development in all the stakeholders impacted by the social innovation collaboration. For the beneficiary community, success included getting screened for noncommunicable diseases as a first step toward treatment. For the facilitator, success involved more resources for their community health program. Amongst the donors, success was a change in perspective and learning cultural humility.

Practical implications

Although universities encourage faculty to work in interdisciplinary research teams to address serious world problems, university researchers may have to exert considerable effort to secure contracts, approvals and payments. Unfortunately, universities may not reward this effort to build ICT4D and continue to evaluate faculty based on journal publications. When universities undertake social innovation collaborations, administrators should ensure responsive and flexible university processes as well as appropriate academic reward structures are in place. This need is heightened when collaborations involve international partners with limited resources and time needed to build relationships and understanding across cultures.

Social implications

This study discovered the importance of fostering cultural humility as a way of avoiding potential conflicts that may arise from cultural and power differences. Cultural humility moves the focus of donor-beneficiary relationships away from getting comfortable with “them” to taking actions that develop relationships and address vulnerabilities (Fisher-Borne et al., 2015). This research shows how the facilitator helped the donor develop cultural humility by involving the donor in various initiatives with the beneficiary community including allowing the donor to live in a dormitory at the hospital, work in an urban slum and visit health screening campus.

Originality/value

This study (1) extends the ICT4D literature by incorporating cultural humility into the sustainable livelihoods framework, (2) provides a contextual understanding of developing cultural humility in ICT4D projects with a complex group of stakeholders and (3) describes how facilitators become a catalyst for change and a bridge to the community. The culturally humble approach suggests revising the livelihood framework to eliminate words like “the poor” to describe beneficiaries.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to propose a comprehensive framework for prioritizing complexity criteria. The framework was validated by applying in infrastructure international development (ID) project as a case study.

Design/methodology/approach

A literature review highlighted the limitations of existing complexity prioritization methods. Then, a combination of the fuzzy decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) and fuzzy analytic network process (ANP) was employed as a foundation to develop a three-stage complexity prioritization framework. Focus group discussion and questionnaire surveys were used to practically test the framework in the infrastructure ID projects.

Findings

The three-stage complexity prioritization framework was validated to be reliable and feasible. The findings showed ability of consultants, scope uncertainties, site compensation and clearance, communication between stakeholders, administrative procedure and project duration were the most significant complexity criteria of ID projects in the Vietnamese context.

Practical implications

The framework is a robust tool that enables the researchers to grasp the interaction of complexity criteria for complexity prioritization. Later studies can apply the proposed framework, with some minor revisions, to assess the interaction of criteria in other research topics in, and beyond, project complexity. Results of the case study suggest project stakeholders focusing on complex interactions among criteria to reduce project complexity.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the body of knowledge by providing a comprehensive complexity prioritization framework that grasps the interrelationship of complexity criteria. For stakeholders of ID projects, the findings provide insightful perspectives to understand complexity, which can help to enhance project performance.
