Abstract

Key issues of the application of modelling and simulation for the management of the Malaysian Kelang Container Terminal are discussed. The aim of the investigation is to improve the logistics processes at the port. The model simulates all processes required to operate the seaport efficiently and provides detailed statistics on the seaport through‐put and utilisation characteristics with a high level of accuracy. The quay cranes allocation, the resources allocations and the scheduling of the different operations are modelled to maximise the performance of the port. The assignment of prime movers to transport containers to a yard area is also considered.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims to present an application of teaching learning-based optimization (TLBO) algorithm and static Var compensator (SVC) to improve the steady state and dynamic performance of self-excited induction generators (SEIG).

Design/methodology/approach

The TLBO algorithm is applied to generate the optimal capacitance to maintain rated voltage with different types of prime mover. For a constant speed prime mover, the TLBO algorithm attains the optimal capacitance to have rated load voltage at different loading conditions. In the case of variable speed prime mover, the TLBO methodology is used to obtain the optimal capacitance and prime mover speed to have rated load voltage and frequency. The SVC of fixed capacitor and controlled reactor is used to have a fine tune in capacitance value and control the reactive power. The parameters of SVC are obtained using the TLBO algorithm.

Findings

The whole system of three-phase induction generator and SVC are established under MatLab/Simulink environment. The performance of the SEIG is demonstrated on two different ratings (i.e. 7.5 kW and 1.5 kW) using the TLBO algorithm and SVC. An experimental setup is built-up using a 1.5 kW three-phase induction machine to confirm the theoretical analysis. The TLBO results are matched with other meta heuristic optimization techniques.

Originality/value

The paper presents an application of the meta-heuristic algorithms and SVC to analysis the steady state and dynamic performance of SEIG with optimal performance.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper seeks to set out opportunities for the development of a UK‐focused feasibility and sizing model utilising linear programming.

Design/methodology/approach

Optimisation of the model is conducted using integer linear programming developed using Excel Solver.

Findings

When compared with comparable alternatives, the model is shown to be particularly useful as its functionality is embedded in resource intensive prime mover specifications obtained from seven real industrial cases.

Research limitations/implications

The study acknowledges the limitation of utilising sizing data primarily obtained from secondary sources to develop the model.

Originality/value

The practical usefulness of this model is that it has been built using “real”, as opposed to simulated‐data. When compared with comparable alternatives, the model is shown to be articularly useful as its functionality is embedded in resource intensive prime mover specifications obtained from seven real industrial cases.

Abstract

Purpose

The present investigation deals with the analysis of the performance of twin thermoacoustic prime mover (TAPM) which are measured in terms of frequency and pressure amplitude by varying the parameters such as temperature gradient along the length of stack and the operating pressures of fluid medium argon using CFD simulation. With the help of CFD researchers and Engineers can evaluate the performance of a wide range of thermoacoustic systems on the computer without the time, expense, and disruption required to make actual changes onsite (stack) which is tedious to fabricate.

Design/methodology/approach

For the present simulation, the operating pressures of argon such as 1bar, 3bar and 5bar, and the temperature gradient is varied from 600K to 1400K with the regular intervals of each 200K. The geometry of twin TAPM is created using GAMBIT processor, and the simulation is carried out using FLUENT. The geometrical parameters of twin TAPM are kept constant throughout the simulation. The results for frequency and pressure amplitude obtained from the CFD simulation of twin TAPM for various temperature gradient and operating pressures are analysed and reported.

Findings

The computational results of twin thermoacoustic prime mover shows an increase in pressure amplitude with an increase in the temperature gradient and also it increases with an increase in operating pressures of the fluid medium. The parameter operating pressures of the working fluid medium and the stack hot end temperature has no significant effect on the output, frequency.

Originality/value

Though several experimental works had been published based on the twin thermoacoustic prime mover, an attempt has been made in the present investigation for the first time to estimate the performance of twin thermoacoustic prime mover using CFD package (ANSYS-FLUENT) by varying temperature gradient. The temperature gradient and operating pressures were varied and the performance of twin thermoacoustic prime mover was measured in terms of frequency and pressure amplitude.

Abstract

Purpose

The way and manner in which energy is produced is known to have a significant impact on emissions. For this reason, the UK government has sought to enhance the efficiency of energy production/conversion by focusing on a number of energy production approaches, including Combined Heat and Power (CHP). The purpose of this paper is to describe a practical approach for assessing the feasibility of CHP.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors provide an overview of Combined Heat and Power (CHP); describe a new and easy‐to‐implement feasibility and optimisation model to aid in the installation of CHP; and discuss the practical feasibility issues of CHP through an analysis of existing case studies using the proposed model. The modelling utilises regression models which are created using historical data obtained from public sources.

Findings

Compared against alternatives, the model is shown to be particularly useful, as its functionality is embedded in resource‐intensive prime mover specifications obtained from seven real industrial cases.

Originality/value

The need for such a practical and easy‐to‐use model is driven by the existence of numerous models, which are mainly complex and not necessarily “user‐friendly”. The proposed model is set to provide a practical and user‐friendly model for CHP appraisal that is easy to understand and assess in terms of prime movers such as capital cost, payback, annual financial and CO2 savings.

THE aircraft gas turbine is intriguing in that there were early attempts at its development not only by the established aero engine companies and research establishments in many countries, but also by manufacturers of marine and industrial turbines and — most successfully — by individuals. The aero engine companies failed because in virtually every instance they attempted to produce a power unit of comparable or lower specific fuel consumption to the traditional piston engine. This led to unduly complex designs involving unattainably high component efficiencies and turbine temperatures at far too early a stage in the development of the new prime mover.
