Abstract

THE development of aircraft penumatic equipment has progressed so satisfactorily in recent years that actuation of vital services by means of compressed air is becoming increasingly popular. In this brief review of developments to date an attempt will be made to show how the air which has been made available as a result of compressor improvements is utilized and by way of introduction it may be of interest to recall some of the bold experiments which were made in earlier years.

Abstract

Discusses the use of high pressure in the processing, packaging and shelf life of food products. Describes the effects of high pressure on food microbiology, chemistry and structure. Suggests there are commercial opportunities for new products using pressure packaging as the flavours and colours of fresh food are maintained with minimal processing.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the economic impact of an oil and gas company's maintenance management ineffectiveness and identify its causes.

Design/methodology/approach

The method followed in this paper consists of the examination of official documents, the observation of operations at the oil and gas company and interviews with company employees. For that purpose, a questionnaire was prepared and used to detect dysfunctions in the existing maintenance system. A statistical tool was also used to evaluate the degree of conformity between the maintenance system and maintenance management effectiveness according to various factors.

Findings

Maintenance management ineffectiveness generates a significant financial loss for the company.

Research limitations/implications

This paper does not examine the impact of maintenance management ineffectiveness on safety, health and the environment. For reasons of confidentiality, the company name is not mentioned.

Practical implications

This paper presents an evaluation of the financial losses caused by maintenance management ineffectiveness, findings which may prove useful to top management. In another way, this paper demonstrates that significant financial profit can be made by improving maintenance performance. Furthermore, system maintenance auditing may be extended to the company's other plants and subsidiaries using the methods presented in this paper. The results of these audits can be generalized usefully such as to be used as a guide to outline plans for improving maintenance performance in the company.

Originality/value

This paper evaluates the impact of maintenance management ineffectiveness in order to convince top management of the necessity of being involved in the process of maintenance improvement.

Abstract

A LARGE supersonic tunnel was completed several years ago at the Royal Aircraft Establishment, Farnborough. A brief specification is as follows: the main working section has a cross section 18 inches square; the stagnation pressure can be varied from 0·1 to 2·8 atmospheres; it is driven by a seven‐stage, axial‐flow compressor with a pressure ratio range 1·1 to 2·3 which can absorb up to 7,000 h.p. for long runs. A perspective drawing of the plant is shown in FIG. 1 and the relation between Reynolds number and Mach number in FIG. 2.

Abstract

A monthly feature giving news of recent Government and professional appointments, industrial developments and business changes, etc.. The Insignia Award in Technology was established by the Council of the City and Guilds of London Institute some twelve months ago to provide a high qualification for persons in industry whose initial training was based primarily upon practical experience combined with theoretical study and who, having gained appropriate City and Guilds' certificates as craftsmen or technicians, have now advanced in their industry by a combination of progressive experience and further study.

Abstract

THE Twenty‐fourth S.B.A.C. Flying Display and Exhibition to be held at Farnborough during the week Monday,September 7, to Sunday, September 13, promises to be the most interesting ever held. This is in part due to the decision taken in 1962 not to hold an S.B.A.C. Show in the summer of 1963, and partly the result of the effort now being concentrated upon the Concord supersonic airliner project, the TSR‐2 supersonic strike and reconnaissance bomber, the Hawker Siddeley P. 1154 V/STOL fighter, two new research aircraft and a whole range of new transport aircraft. Apart from the models and displays which will be mounted by the major airframe and engine manufacturers demonstrating their own involvement with these projects and programmes, the stands of the Associate Members of the Society of British Aerospace Companies will abound with examples of materials, techniques and equipment which these companies are producing in support of the latest programmes—notably TSR.2 and Concord.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to describe the results of lab testing of a newly developed organic inhibitor V-active VCIs. The findings demonstrate that it is possible to eliminate or reduce the oxidizing action of water, thereby extending the allowable time before painting after hydrojetting, and that the new corrosion inhibitor technology does not interfere with the final quality of paint adhesion.

Design/methodology/approach

Metallic specimens were treated/washed in standard lab condition. A 2 per cent V-active VCI SPH1712 water solution was prepared by diluting the inhibitor in industrial water. Metal sample plates were examined after blasting and after subsequent drying, and were submitted to the paint adhesion tests, cathodic disbondment, total soluble salts, time for formation of flash rust and cyclic corrosion test type III (20 cycles), to evaluate the duration of temporary protection and oxidation prevention and influence on paint adherence.

Findings

Using the V-active VCI proposed technology, it was possible to minimize or eliminate the oxidizing action of the water when the metal is exposed to saline moisture in a closed environment, extending the acceptable time before painting without interfering with the final quality of painting.

Practical implications

The proposed technology allows an increase in the prepared (wet blasted) steel surface during cleaning and preparation, thereby reducing labor and product costs, and reduces water consumption during the preparation process. Practical applications in the shipbuilding, ship maintenance and oil and gas production industries include the preservation of internal tubes and pipes, protection during hydrostatic test processes and cleaning with water and corrosion prevention in diesel tanks contaminated with water.

Originality/value

The intent of this paper is to present the obtained results for a new formulation of organic chemical inhibitors that use water as the application medium. In addition to this property, this group of organic inhibitors maintains the properties of volatile inhibitors. Thus, these compounds are generically known as V-active VCIs.
