Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to construct a Weber point-based model to complete the visualization of preference aggregation in group decision-making problem, in which decision-makers are associated with trust relationship.

Design/methodology/approach

This study mainly comprises four parts: trust propagation, preference aggregation, opinion adjustment and alternative selection. Firstly, the incomplete trust between decision-makers is completed with trust transfer operators and propagation probability in trust propagation process. Secondly, a preference aggregation model based on Weber point is proposed to aggregate the group preference visually. Thirdly, opinions are adjusted to reach a consensus. Finally, the ranking of alternatives is determined by the correlation coefficient with the group preference as a reference.

Findings

The Weber point-based model proposed in this study can minimize the gap in the preference of alternatives between the group and all decision-makers, and realize the visualization of aggregation result. A case of plan selection is introduced to illustrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed model.

Originality/value

By comparing the result with the weighted average-based preference aggregation method, the Weber point-based model proposed in this study can show the result of preference aggregation intuitively and improve group consensus.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to build a consensus model of social network group decision-making (SNGDM) based on improved PageRank algorithm. By objectively and fairly measuring the evaluation ability of participants in the decision-making process, the authors can improve the fairness and authenticity of the weight solution of decision-makers (DM) in the decision-making process. This ensures the reliability of the final group consensus results.

Design/methodology/approach

This study mainly includes six parts: preference expression, calculation of DM's weight, preference aggregation, consensus measurement, opinion adjustment and alternative selection. First, Pythagorean fuzzy expression is introduced to express the preference of DMs, which expands the scope of preference expression of DMs. Second, based on the social network structure among DMs, the process of “mutual judgment” among DMs is increased to measure the evaluation ability of DMs. On this basis, the PageRank algorithm is improved to calculate the weight of DMs. This makes the process of reaching consensus more objective and fair. Third, in order to minimize the evaluation difference between groups and individuals, a preference aggregation model based on plant growth simulation algorithm (PGSA) is proposed to aggregate group preferences. Fourth, the consensus index of DMs is calculated from three levels to judge whether the consensus degree reaches the preset value. Fifth, considering the interaction of DMs in the social network, the evaluation value to achieve the required consensus degree is adjusted according to the DeGroot model to obtain the overall consensus. Finally, taking the group preference as the reference, the ranking of alternatives is determined by using the Pythagorean fuzzy score function.

Findings

This paper proposes a consensus model of SNGDM based on improved PageRank algorithm to aggregate expert preference information. A numerical case of product evaluation is introduced, and the feasibility and effectiveness of the model are explained through sensitivity analysis and comparative analysis. The results show that this method can solve the problem of reaching consensus in SNGDM.

Originality/value

Different DMs may have different judgment criteria for the same decision-making problem, and the angle and depth of considering the problem will also be different. By increasing the process of mutual evaluation of DMs, the evaluation ability of each DM is judged only from the decision-making problem itself. In this way, the evaluation opinions recognized by most DMs will form the mainstream of opinions, and the influence of corresponding DMs will increase. Therefore, in order to improve the fairness and reliability of the consensus process, this study measures the real evaluation ability of DMs by increasing the “mutual judgment” process. On this basis, the defect of equal treatment of PageRank algorithm in calculating the weight of DMs is improved. This ensures the authenticity and objectivity of the weight of DMs. That is to improve the effectiveness of the whole evaluation mechanism. This method considers both the influence of DMs in the social network and their own evaluation level. The weight of DMs is calculated from two aspects: sociality and professionalism. It provides a new method and perspective for the calculation of DM’s weight in SNGDM.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose an approach to generate recommendations for groups on the basis of social factors extracted from a social network. Group recommendation techniques traditionally assumed users were independent individuals, ignoring the effects of social interaction and relationships among users. In this work the authors analyse the social factors available in social networks in the light of sociological theories which endorse individuals’ susceptibility to influence within a group.

Design/methodology/approach

The approach proposed is based on the creation of a group model in two stages: identifying the items that are representative of the majority's preferences, and analysing members’ similarity; and extracting potential influence from members’ interactions in a social network to predict a group's opinion on each item.

Findings

The promising results obtained when evaluating the approach in the movie domain suggest that individual opinions tend to be accommodated to group satisfaction, as demonstrated by the incidence of the aforementioned factors in collective behaviour, as endorsed by sociological research. Moreover the findings suggest that these factors have dissimilar impacts on group satisfaction.

Originality/value

The results obtained provide clues about how social influence exerted within groups could alter individuals’ opinions when a group has a common goal. There is limited research in this area exploring social influence in group recommendations; thus the originality of this perspective lies in the use of sociological theory to explain social influence in groups of users, and the flexibility of the approach to be applied in any domain. The findings could be helpful for group recommender systems developers both at research and commercial levels.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims to offer a new perspective on the strictly microeconomic nature of all of Islamic economics. Writers in this field continue to work in the mainstream tradition without noticing the micro‐interface of the theoretical nature of Islamic economics. This paper aims to address this issue.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper provides a comparative study of received literature in the history of economic thought and contrasts the ethical foundations of Islamic economics from the mainstream dichotomy between microeconomic and macroeconomic parts.

Findings

There is a cogent microeconomic foundation of Islamic economics for the economy‐wide treatment of ethical economic issues and problems including the policy framework.

Research limitations/implications

This is a theoretical exploration. The empirical part is yet to be expanded upon.

Practical implications

The paper has practical implications for graduate students on policy formulation and economic theorizing, by making them analytically aware on the extensive relevance of microeconomics in the building block of ethical content of economic theory, policy and institutions.

Originality/value

The paper presents original thinking along lines of microeconomic foundations of macroeconomic theory from the social and ethical vantage points of Islamic economics and finance that writers in this field should not ignore. The paper is meant for serious students and academics of economic theory and ethical social policy embedded in the economic treatment.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate how book group recommendations can be used as a meaningful way to suggest suitable books to users, given the increasing number of individuals engaging in sharing and discussing books on the web.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors propose reviews fine-grained classification (CFGC) and its related models such as CFGC1 for book group recommendation. These models can categorize reviews successively by function and role. Constructing the BERT-BiLSTM model to classify the reviews by function. The frequency characteristics of the reviews are mined by word frequency analysis, and the relationship between reviews and total book score is mined by correlation analysis. Then, the reviews are classified into three roles: celebrity, general and passerby. Finally, the authors can form user groups, mine group features and combine group features with book fine-grained ratings to make book group recommendations.

Findings

Overall, the best recommendations are made by Synopsis comments, with the accuracy, recall, F-value and Hellinger distance of 52.9%, 60.0%, 56.3% and 0.163, respectively. The F1 index of the recommendations based on the author and the writing comments is improved by 2.5% and 0.4%, respectively, compared to the Synopsis comments.

Originality/value

Previous studies on book recommendation often recommend relevant books for users by mining the similarity between books, so the set of book recommendations recommended to users, especially to groups, always focuses on the few types. The proposed method can effectively ensure the diversity of recommendations by mining users’ tendency to different review attributes of books and recommending books for the groups. In addition, this study also investigates which types of reviews should be used to make book recommendations when targeting groups with specific tendencies.

Abstract

Purpose

The application of theories on group decision support is yet to be explored extensively in supplier selection literature, although the literature in both domains is extremely rich, in isolation. The purpose of this paper is to explore the application of group decision support theories for supplier selection.

Design/methodology/approach

The row geometric mean method (RGMM) of the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) has been used in this study for the prioritization of group preferences under consensus. A case study was conducted to test the theories of consensual group decision making and compare it with other approaches based on AHP.

Findings

The study establishes that the application of decision support theories for group decision making can improve the supplier selection process. Findings further imply that RGMM is more effective than eigen value method, for group decision making under consensus.

Research limitations/implications

Methodologically, the study highlights the greater regularity in outcome of group decision making, vis-à-vis individual decision making, for the same decision-making context. Also, it highlights how RGMM is more effective since it preserves reciprocal properties and diversity in preferences better.

Practical implications

The study establishes that firms can improve supplier selection processes by leveraging on the collective expertise of a group rather than depending on individual decision-making expertise.

Originality/value

This study explores the application of different theories based on AHP for consensual group decision making. It compares different approaches based on AHP and establishes that RGMM is a superior approach for supplier selection.

Abstract

The theme of micro‐foundation of economic theory has not been adequately addressed. This is true even of those who pioneered the area of micro‐foundation of macro‐economics. The great missing link in economic theory, both of micro‐economics and macro‐economics, is the inability to methodologically integrate ethical and moral values through preference mapping. This missing methodology disables the study of institutions, policy formulation and normative statements of structural transformation. On the other hand, such issues are once again haunting the human race in the murky and troubled global relations today – from capitalism to war to governance. This paper addresses the preference mapping and embedding of ethical and moral issues as endogenous dynamics in economic theory. The approach is rigorous and methodological.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to bring out with analytical argumentation and mathematical treatment the central problem of Islamic economics, finance, institutionalism and socio‐scientific thought as it is being practiced today and for some time now. The problem arises from the failure of contemporary Islamic intellection to formulate its methodology according to the cardinal principle, and the singularly central and minimal axiom of all its inferences. This is the precept of the oneness of God explained in terms of the epistemology of unity of divine knowledge and the unity of the consequential knowledge‐induced world‐system.

Design/methodology/approach

The objective is achieved by mathematical theorems for pointing out the impossibility problem of Islamic economics and finance. The analytical alternative in the epistemological framework of unity of knowledge, or the functional law of oneness of God in its functional ontological functioning in economics and finance are formalized.

Findings

A number of Impossibility Theorems of Islamic economics and finance are stated and solved. Alternative epistemological premise and its functional nature are presented in the light of unity of knowledge or what is known as the law of oneness of God and its application to the unified world‐system.

Research limitations/implications

This is a theoretical paper based on analytical argumentation and mathematical formalism to bring out the theorems that state and resolve the problem of impossibility of attaining the goals of Islamic economics and finance under their present pursuit.

Practical implications

Although the paper is of a theoretical nature it has profound practical extensions. The principal ones are in the direction of developing the structure of Islamic economy and financing within a globally interactive, integrative and evolutionary system of practical interrelations. Such a structuring will embed the economy, finance, business and society in an organic model of unity of interrelations.

Social implications

The paper presents a new social and ethical meaning to the present exogenous treatment of Islamic economics that proceeds on by an exogenous treatment of morality, ethics and their functioning in an unsustainable economic, finance, and social order.

Originality/value

This paper is emphatically original. It questions the entire premise and methodological orientation of the prevailing nature of Islamic economics and finance. The intellection and its application based on the absence of unity of knowledge as the divine mooring of Islamic intellection in everything has been distanced or treated as an exogenous still‐born axiom having no dynamics in the analytical and functional system otherwise.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper's aim is to design and describe a new mathematical ware instrument allowing to facilitate group decision-making process with feedback.

Design/methodology/approach

The aim is achieved through the development of a method for achieving sufficient consistency of individual expert alternative rankings based on evolutionary algorithms. The method is targeted at minimizing the number of times the experts in the group are addressed.

Findings

The method developed and described in the paper allows to provide sufficient consistency level of individual expert rankings allowing to aggregate the rankings into a transitive preference relation.

Research limitations/implications

The method is targeted at small expert groups. The method is limited by psycho-physiological constraints of human (expert's) mind, which is unable to analyze more than seven objects simultaneously.

Practical implications

The method can be used in different scopes of human activity requiring ordinal expert estimation.

Originality/value

The method is based on an original approach to organising feedback with experts. Genetic algorithm is used to determine the optimal candidate among the experts to be addressed at every feedback step.
