Abstract

Purpose

In general, the optimal reactive power compensation could drastically enhance the performance of distributed network by the reduction of power loss and by enhancement of line loadability and voltage profile. Till now, there exist various reactive power compensation models including capacitor placement, joined process of on-load tap changer and capacitor banks and integration of DG. Further, one of the current method is the allocation of distribution FACTS (DFACTS) device. Even though, the DFACTS devices are usually used in the enhancement of power quality, they could be used in the optimal reactive power compensation with more effectiveness.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper introduces a power quality enhancement model that is based on a new hybrid optimization algorithm for selecting the precise unified power quality conditioner (UPQC) location and sizing. A new algorithm rider optimization algorithm (ROA)-modified particle swarm optimization (PSO) in fitness basis (RMPF) is introduced for this optimal selections.

Findings

Through the performance analysis, it is observed that as the iteration increases, there is a gradual minimization of cost function. At the 40th iteration, the proposed method is 1.99 per cent better than ROA and genetic algorithm (GA); 0.09 per cent better than GMDA and WOA; and 0.14, 0.57 and 1.94 per cent better than Dragonfly algorithm (DA), worst solution linked whale optimization (WS-WU) and PSO, respectively. At the 60th iteration, the proposed method attains less cost function, which is 2.07, 0.08, 0.06, 0.09, 0.07 and 1.90 per cent superior to ROA, GMDA, DA, GA, WS-WU and PSO, respectively. Thus, the proposed model proves that it is better than other models.

Originality/value

This paper presents a technique for optimal placing and sizing of UPQC. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first work that introduces RMPF algorithm to solve the optimization problems.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to propose an improved multifunctional control strategy for achieving real, reactive power flow control and the mitigation of power quality issues in grid integrated photovoltaic (GIPV) systems.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper proposes a dual stage, three phase, multifunctional GIPV system with modified instantaneous reactive power (IRP) theory-based and modified synchronous reference frame (SRF) theory-based control algorithms for reference template generation with continuous load power requirement tracking. The control structure is designed so as to impart virtual distribution static compensator functionality to the photovoltaic inverter. The dual mode operation in active filter and renewable power injection modes provides enhanced capability to the GIPV system. A comprehensive evaluation of the dynamic behaviour of the GIPV system is carried out for various conditions of irradiance and load under MATLAB/Simulink platform. The performance comparison is done considering an uncompensated system and the GIPV system with both proposed control algorithms.

Findings

The extensive simulation results demonstrate that the proposed modified SRF theory-based multifunctional control strategy shows superior performance in real and reactive power flow control; reduction in real and reactive burden of the utility grid; and regulation of dc bus voltage under varying scenarios of irradiance and load. Furthermore, there is improvement of grid power factor and reduction in total harmonic distortion of grid currents in compliance with the IEEE 519 standard even with highly non-linear loads at the point of common coupling.

Originality/value

The proposed modified SRF theory-based multifunctional controller offers a viable solution for power quality enhancement as well as the realization of effective real and reactive power flow control in GIPV systems. Thus, the penetration level of distributed generation can be increased in this era of global energy crisis.

Abstract

Purpose

Power quality issues highly affect the secure and economic operations of the power system. Although numerous methodologies are reported in the literature, flexible alternating current transmission system (FACTS) devices play a primary role. However, the FACTS devices require optimal location and sizing to perform the power quality enhancement effectively and in a cost efficient manner. This paper aims to attain the maximum power quality improvements in IEEE 30 and IEEE 57 test bus systems.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper contributes the adaptive whale optimization algorithm (AWOA) algorithm to solve the power quality issues under deregulated sector, which enhances available transfer capability, maintains voltage stability, minimizes loss and mitigates congestions.

Findings

Through the performance analysis, the convergence of the final fitness of AWOA algorithm is 5 per cent better than artificial bee colony (ABC), 3.79 per cent better than genetic algorithm (GA), 2,081 per cent better than particle swarm optimization (PSO) and fire fly (FF) and 2.56 per cent better than whale optimization algorithm (WOA) algorithms at 400 per cent load condition for IEEE 30 test bus system, and the fitness convergence of AWOA algorithm for IEEE 57 test bus system is 4.44, 4.86, 5.49, 7.52 and 9.66 per cent better than FF, ABC, WOA, PSO and GA, respectively.

Originality/value

This paper presents a technique for minimizing the power quality problems using AWOA algorithm. This is the first work to use WOA-based optimization for the power quality improvements.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to introduce the quasi impedance source inverter (qZSI)-based static compensator (STATCOM), which is incorporated into the hybrid distributed power generation system for enhancement of power quality. The distributed power generation system includes the photovoltaic (PV), wind energy conversion system (WECS) and battery energy storage system.

Design/methodology/approach

The WECS is used by the self-excited induction generator (SEIG) and the flywheel energy storage system (FESS). To regulate its terminal voltage and frequency, the SEIG requires adjustable volt-ampere reactive (VAR). A combination of a STATCOM and a fixed condenser bank usually serves to satisfy the VAR demand. The maximum correntropy criterion-based adaptive filter technique (AFT) is proposed to control the qZSI-STATCOM and to guarantee that the voltage at the SEIG terminal is harmonic-free while providing non-linear three-phase and single-phase loads.

Findings

The coordinated operation of the suggested voltage control and flywheel control systems ensures that load voltage and frequency are retained in their respective values at very low harmonic distortions regardless of wind speed and load variation. The simulation and experimental studies are carried out under different load conditions to validate the efficiencies of the PV-assisted STATCOM.

Originality/value

To improve system stability and minimize total costs, extra load current sensors can also be avoided. This paper proposes to control the SEIG terminal voltage and harmonic elimination in the standalone WECS systems using maximum correntropy criterion-based AFT with a fuzzy logic controller.

Abstract

Purpose

For direct torque controlled induction motor drives, an effective solution to eliminate harmonics is the use of multipulse alternating current (AC)-direct current (DC) converters. Many researchers have used different configurations based on 24- and 30-pulse rectifications for improved power quality. However, the total harmonic distortion (THD) of AC mains current with these topology is more than 4 per cent when operating at a light load. For mitigating the THD problems observed in the input currents, Abdollahi propose 40-, 72- and 88-pulse AC-DC converters, while the power quality enhancement was the main concern. It is known that by increasing the number of pulses further results in reduction in current harmonics, but this is accompanied by an increase in cost and complexity. In this context, the purpose of this paper is to design a new delta/hexagon transformer based 36-pulse AC-DC converter for harmonic reduction without increasing the cost and complexity.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed converter consists of two paralleled 18-pulse AC-DC converters involving a nine-phase shifted uncontrolled diode bridges with an interphase transformer circuit.

Findings

In this paper, the proposed scheme is simulated by matrix laboratory (MATLAB)/SIMULINK considering different loading scenarios. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme improves the power quality indices and satisfies the The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)-519 requirements at the point of common coupling. Also, a laboratory prototype is implemented using the proposed design, and the experimental results confirm the simulation results under different loading conditions.

Originality/value

The proposed solution is a tradeoff among the pulse number, the transformer platform, the complexity of the scheme and the cost. The proposed scheme has an optimized configuration in this regard.

Abstract

Purpose

The use of power electronic equipment such as conventional AC-DC-AC converters cause several problems in electrical networks and its components. They generate harmonic currents and disturb the electrical power sources; so, it is necessary to research alternative topologies of power electronic converters based on advanced intelligent controllers, which reduce or even eliminate harmonics to achieve energy-saving and environmental protection. The use of matrix converter (MC) is, considered as an attractive solution to maintain pure sinusoidal input and output current waveforms. The paper aims to discuss this issue.

Design/methodology/approach

The studied system is composed of a three phase matrix converter (TMC) feeding a linear R, L load and a trees phase rectifier considered as a non-linear load; the proposed control strategy is based on a fuzzy logic controller (FLC) associated to the (space vector modulation) SVM modulation technique, this choice is motivated by the advantages that represent the combination of FLC and SVM in term of power quality enhancement in both input and output sides of MC.

Findings

The model is validated based on simulation results that illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed system in term of power quality amelioration. The high performance of the proposed FLC is illustrated in all study cases especially in the case of perturbed input voltage, it is not only able to keep the whole system stable, but also it reduces harmonic distortion THD to respect international standards recommendation.

Originality/value

In this paper, an associated linear (RL), non-linear loads and TMC is studied. From the mathematical point of view, the MC is modeled and analyzed. From the technique point of view, the MC allows sinusoidal current absorbance from the network with good qualities in term of harmonic distortion compensation, and high reliability under various loads and disturbed input voltage.

Abstract

Purpose

The earlier methods are more resilient to improvements such as load shift and path change. This results in problems such as a voltage drop and a high reactive flux. In addition, due to the delay, congestion or interruption of the transmission, the system cannot receive all phasor measurement unit (PMU) measurements at the relevant time as well as the presence of noise in the received data.

Design/methodology/approach

With the development of wide area measurement system technologies, it seems to be possible to track voltage stability online via time-stamped PMUs. As the voltage instability causes a voltage decomposition, voltage instability is one of the most important problems when monitoring the power supply.

Findings

This harmonic distortion significantly decreases the data quality in the grid. As a result, instability ascertainment based on PMU has been suggested as a method for detecting voltage instability in power systems monitored with PMU. In addition, a technique called instability amendment via load dropping has been proposed to keep the device from collapsing due to voltage failure.

Originality/value

To improve the power output, the power prominence melioration technique was developed. This proposed system has been implemented in MATLAB Simulink and compared with the recent researches.

Abstract

Purpose

With the advancement of technology, size, cost, and losses of the switched mode power supply (SMPS) have been decreasing. However, due to the high frequency switching, design of magnetic drives and isolation circuits are becoming a crucial factor in SMPS. This paper presents design criteria, procedure and implementation of AC-DC half bridge (HB) converter with lower cost, smaller size and lower voltage stress on the power switch.

Design/Methodology/approach

The HB converter is designed in a symmetrical mode with a series coupling capacitor. Isolated power supplies are used for the converter and control circuit. Further, a transformer based isolated gate driver is used to drive both MOSFETs. The control IC works in voltage control mode to regulate voltage by controlling the duty cycle of the MOSFETs.

Findings

Control characteristics and performance of the HB converter is simulated using the MATLAB software and prototype of 170 W HB converter is built to validate the analytical results under variable load current and source voltage. The power quality and variation of load voltage at 2 A, 5 A, 7 A are reported.

Originality/value

This paper presents the design of a low-cost HB converter in a symmetrical mode which saves the additional cost of symmetric correction circuit normally required in asymmetrical mode design. This paper also focuses on the selection of primary and secondary side switch, series coupling capacitor, commuting diode, isolated drive and charge equalizer resistor.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to eliminate voltage harmonics and instantly measure the positive sequence fundamental voltage during unbalanced grid conditions, the dual second-order generalized integrator-phase locked loop used in series hybrid filter structures is often used in grid synchronisation in three-phase networks. The preferred series active hybrid power filter simultaneously compensates for voltage balancing and current harmonics generated by non-linear loads.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper examines the use of renewable energy–based microgrid (MG) to support linear and non-linear loads. It is capable of synchronising with both the utility and the diesel generator unit. Power is transferred from the grid throughout a stable grid situation with minimum renewable energy generation and maximum load demand. It synchronises with diesel generator set to supply the load and form an AC MG during outages and minimum renewable power generation. In islanded and grid-connected mode, the voltage and power quality issues of the MG are controlled by static synchronous compensator and series hybrid filter.

Findings

Because of the presence of non-linear loads, reactive loads in the distribution system and the injection of wind power into the grid integrated system result power quality issues like current harmonics, voltage fluctuations, reactive power demand, etc.

Originality/value

The voltage at the load (linear and non-linear) is regulated, and the power factor and total harmonic distortions were improved with the help of the series hybrid filter.
