Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the impact of renewable energy on the power supply chain and to study whether the renewable generator or the power grid that purchases power from the power spot market is better when the actual generation of renewable energy is insufficient. The authors want to compare and analyze the different power supply chain operation modes and discuss the optimal mode selection for renewable energy generator and power grid in different situations.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper studies the grid-led price competition game in the power supply chain, in which the power grid as a leader decides the price of transmission and distribution, and generators determine the power grid price. The renewable energy power generator and the traditional energy power generator conduct a price competition game; on the other hand, the power grid and power generators conduct Stackelberg games. The authors analyze the power supply of single power generator and two power generators, respectively, and research on the situation that the renewable energy cannot be fully recharged when the actual power generation is insufficient.

Findings

The study finds that both renewable and traditional power grid prices decline as price sensitivity coefficient of demand and installed capacity of renewable energy generators increase. Power grid premium decreases as the price sensitivity coefficient of demand increases, but rises as the installed capacity of renewable energy generator increases. When there is a shortage of power, if the installed capacity of renewable energy is relatively small and price sensitivity coefficient of demand is relatively large, the grid purchases the power from power spot market and shares cost with renewable energy generators, leading to higher expected profits of the renewable energy generators. On the contrary, the renewable energy generators prefer to make up power shortage themselves. For the power grid, purchasing the power by the renewable energy generators when there is a power shortage can bring more utility to the power grid when the installed capacity of renewable energy is lower and the demand price sensitivity coefficient is higher. When the installed capacity of renewable energy is high and the price sensitivity coefficient of demand is moderate, or the installed capacity of renewable energy is moderate and the demand price sensitivity coefficient is high, a generator that simultaneously possesses two kinds of energy source will bring more utility to the power grid. If the installed capacity of renewable energy and the demand price sensitivity coefficient both are small or the installed capacity of renewable energy and the price sensitivity coefficient of demand both are large, the power grid prefers to purchase the power by itself when there is a power shortage.

Practical implications

The goal of our paper analysis is to explore the implications of the theoretical model and address the series of research questions regarding the impact of the renewable energy on the power supply chain. The results of this study have key implications for reality. This paper sheds light on the power supply chain operation mode selection, which can potentially be used for the renewable energy generators to choose their operating mode and can also help traditional energy generators and power grid enterprises maximize their utility. This paper also has some references for the government to formulate the corresponding renewable energy development policy.

Originality/value

This paper studies the power operation mode under the uncertainty of supply and demand, and compares the advantages and disadvantages of renewable energy generator that makes up the shortage or the power grid purchases the power from power spot market then shares cost with the renewable energy generator. This paper analyzes the power grid-led coordination problem in a power supply chain, compares and analyzes the price competition game model of single power generator and dual power generators, and compares the different risk preferences of power grid.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine differences in manufacturing managers' perceptions of functional area power in manufacturing organizations to address the perception in the literature that manufacturing has little if any power in the organization.

Design/methodology/approach

Survey data gathered from 129 manufacturing executives in the USA are used to examine their perceptions of differences in functional power in manufacturing firms. Relative rankings of functional areas for four types of power – position, expertise, resource, and political – are used to examine perceived differences, and the relationship between power and the role of the manufacturing executive in strategic decision making.

Findings

Contrary to prior assertions in the manufacturing strategy literature, it was found that the manufacturing and marketing areas are perceived by manufacturing managers to be the most powerful functions, switching in their dominant roles depending upon the type of power. In addition, a relationship exists between position, expertise, and political power and the role of the manufacturing executive.

Research limitations/implications

Although, this research includes a second respondent from a sub‐sample of firms, future research should examine not only the manufacturing managers' perceptions of intra‐organizational power, but also should dovetail the paper's findings with perceptions of managers in other functional areas as well.

Practical implications

Manufacturing managers can take actions to enhance their role in business‐level strategic decisions and be proactive in increasing the power of their functional area.

Originality/value

This paper addresses intra‐organizational power, which has not been examined in the manufacturing strategy literature from the perspective of the manufacturing manager's perception.

Purpose

The prospect theory is potentially an essential ingredient in modeling the disposition effect. However, many scholars have tried to explain the disposition effect with the help of prospect theory and they came to opposite conclusions. The purpose of this paper is to examine the impact of value function of the prospect theory on predicting the disposition effect.

Design/methodology/approach

Lagrange multiplier optimization and dynamic programming method are used to solve the representative investor’s optimal portfolio choice problem. Furthermore, numerical simulation is used to compare the prediction ability of different types of value function.

Findings

The authors support that the value function has a crucial role in predicting the disposition effect with prospect theory, i.e. the curvature and boundedness of the value function may influence the performance of applying the prospect theory in the disposition effect. They conclude that a piecewise negative exponential value function can predict the disposition effect, while others like the piecewise power value function may not.

Originality/value

Extant literature about modeling the disposition effect with the prospect theory mostly focus on the time when gain-loss utility occurs or the selection of reference point. This paper based on the value function properties provides a new perspective in analyzing the crucial role that value function has in predicting financial market anomalies.

Abstract

Purpose

By undertaking a detailed review of the Strategic Human Resource Management (SHRM) discourse, the purpose of this paper is to uncover and explicate the power differentials embedded in the social structure of organizations and suggests ways to reconcile them.

Design/methodology/approach

Methods used are thematic review, content analysis, and inductive theorizing, with Foucault’s archaeological and genealogical analysis style as the overarching framework.

Findings

At the methodological level, the authors demonstrate the application of Foucault’s twin methods: archaeological and genealogical analysis. At the substantive level, the authors have two contributions. First, the authors critique and analyze the various themes of power that emerge from the SHRM discourse as well as the hybridized overlaps of SHRM with other organization studies topics of interest such as organizational learning, network studies, control and postmodernism. Second, the authors propose a “Power” theory based nomothetic, typological synthesis for crafting the business-facing human resource (HR) function. The power lens manifests as the meta-theory to guide a much required streamlining of constructs and “value laden” synthesis of the literature.

Research limitations/implications

The potential of critical theory in crafting situated and context-sensitive research propositions is demonstrated.

Practical implications

Organizational strategists and HR managers can utilize the proposed typology to better understand their current ideological positions and decide future aspired images.

Originality/value

This is a conversation between two paradigms, SHRM and power theory, that are epistemologically at two opposite poles.

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to enhance the line congestion and to minimize power loss. Transmission line congestion is considered the most acute trouble during the operation of the power system. Therefore, congestion management acts as an effective tool in using the available power without breaking the system hindrances or limitations.

Design/methodology/approach

Over the past few years, determining the optimal location and size of the devices have pinched a great deal of consideration. Numerous approaches have been established to mitigate the congestion rate, and this paper aims to enhance the line congestion and minimize power loss by determining the compensation rate and optimal location of a thyristor-switched capacitor (TCSC) using adaptive moth swarm optimization (AMSO) algorithm.

Findings

An AMSO algorithm uses the performances of moth flame and the chaotic local search-based shrinking scheme of the bacterial foraging optimization algorithm. The proposed AMSO approach is executed and discussed for the IEEE-30 bus system for determining the optimal location of single TCSC and dual TCSC.

Originality/value

In addition to this, the proposed algorithm is compared with various other existing approaches, and the results thus obtained provide better performances than other techniques.

Abstract

Purpose

Rapidly increasing the proportion of installed wind power capacity with zero carbon emission characteristics will help adjust the energy structure and support the realization of carbon neutrality targets. The intermittency of wind resources and fluctuations in electricity demand has exacerbated the contradiction between power supply and demand. The time-of-use pricing and supply-side allocation of energy storage power stations will help “peak shaving and valley filling” and reduce the gap between power supply and demand. To this end, this paper constructs a decision-making model for the capacity investment of energy storage power stations under time-of-use pricing, which is intended to provide a reference for scientific decision-making on electricity prices and energy storage power station capacity.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the research framework of time-of-use pricing, this paper constructs a profit-maximizing electricity price and capacity investment decision model of energy storage power station for flat pricing and time-of-use pricing respectively. In the process, this study considers the dual uncertain scenarios of intermittency of wind resources and random fluctuations in power demand.

Findings

(1) Investment in energy storage power stations is the optimal decision. Time-of-use pricing will reduce the optimal capacity of the energy storage power station. (2) The optimal capacity of the energy storage power station and optimal electricity price are related to factors such as the intermittency of wind resources, the unit investment cost, the price sensitivities of the demand, the proportion of time-of-use pricing and the thermal power price. (3) The carbon emission level is affected by the intermittency of wind resources, price sensitivities of the demand and the proportion of time-of-use pricing. Incentive policies can always reduce carbon emission levels.

Originality/value

This paper creatively introduced the research framework of time-of-use pricing into the capacity decision-making of energy storage power stations, and considering the influence of wind power intermittentness and power demand fluctuations, constructed the capacity investment decision model of energy storage power stations under different pricing methods, and compared the impact of pricing methods on optimal energy storage power station capacity and carbon emissions.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to find an effective and standardized function transformation method to apply in both high-growth original data sequences and low-growth original data sequences, which can improve the accuracy of model prediction in GM(1, 1) forecast.

Design/methodology/approach

In GM(1, 1) forecast, many original data sequences need to meet the quasi-exponential characteristic by methods of function transformation. However, many methods of function transformation have complex transformation processes or narrow application range. On the basis of the research results of Ye and Li, the paper presents a standardized approach based on to original data sequences and designs four situations of the standardized approach. By using high-growth and low-growth original data sequences as the objects, respectively, the paper verifies the effectiveness of the proposed method and compares the forecasting effects of GM(1, 1) based on function transformation with the original GM(1, 1).

Findings

Most of the results show that function transformations can improve the accuracy of the conventional GM(1, 1) forecast, and transform is a powerful tool to effectively process original data sequence of GM(1, 1) modeling.

Practical implications

GM(1, 1) forecast have been widely used in many fields such as agriculture, economy, meteorology, and geology. The proposed method in this paper can effectively apply to prediction of high-growth original data sequences and low-growth original data sequences, to some extent, enrich and deepen application of GM(1, 1) forecast.

Originality/value

The paper succeeds in providing a standardized approach based on and designs four intensity levels for different data sequences based on the standardized approach.

Abstract

Purpose

In the hybrid electricity market consisting of renewable and conventional energy, the generation output of renewable power is uncertain because of its intermittency, and the power market demand is also fluctuant. Meanwhile, there is fierce competition among power producers in the power supply market and retailers in the demand market after deregulation, which increases the difficulty of renewable energy power grid-connection. To promote grid-connection of renewable energy power in the hybrid electricity market, the authors construct different contract decision-making models in the “many-to-many” hybrid power supply chain to explore the pricing strategy of renewable energy power grid-connecting.

Design/methodology/approach

Considering the dual-uncertainty of renewable energy power output and electricity market demand, the authors construct different decision-making models of wholesale price contract and revenue-sharing contract to compare and optimize grid-connecting pricing, respectively, to maximize the profits of different participants in the hybrid power supply chain. Besides, the authors set different parameters in the models to explore the influence of competition intensity, government subsidies, etc. on power pricing. Then, a numerical simulation is carried out, they verify the existence of the equilibrium solutions satisfying the supply chain coordination, compare the differences of pricing contracts and further analyze the variation characteristics of optimal contract parameters and their interaction relations.

Findings

Revenue-sharing contract can increase the quantity of green power grid-connection and realize benefits Pareto improvement of all parties in hybrid power supply chain. The competition intensity both of power supply and demand market will have an impact on the sharing ratio, and the increase of competition intensity results in a reduction of power supply chain coordination pressure. The power contract price, spot price and selling price have all been reduced with the increase of the sharing ratio, and the price of renewable power is more sensitive to the ratio change. The sharing ratio shows a downward trend with the increase of government green power subsidies.

Originality/value

On the basis of expanding the definition of hybrid power market and the theory of newsvendor model, considering the dual-uncertainty of green power generation output and electricity market demand, this paper builds and compares different contract decision-making models to study the grid-connection pricing strategy of renewable energy power. And as an extension of supply chain structure types and management, the authors build a “many-to-many” power supply chain structure model and analyze the impact of competition intensity among power enterprises and the government subsidy on the power grid-connecting pricing.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the impacts of the politicisation of women academics body in higher education as a result of the implementation of audit culture of new public management.

Design/methodology/approach

The research was conducted in Indonesian universities, by conducting interviews to collect data from 20 women academics from two universities in eastern regions of Indonesia.

Findings

The impacts of audit culture on women academics’ body in this study can be understood from the constraints told by them, reflected on the creation of several types of bodies.

Research limitations/implications

This paper, though, has some limitations in terms of the inclusion of only women academics, exclusion of male academics and of their limitations of addressing important constructs to elaborate the politicisation of the women body, such as culture, religion, patriarchy, and academic tribes and territories.

Practical implications

The results of this study are important for the policy maker of Indonesia to take into account “gender perspective” on research productivity and publication policy to effectively obtain the political objectives of the government. For higher education in Indonesia, the result of this study may give an indication of the importance to establish different and distinctive standards of work performance evaluation on research and publication for female and male academics.

Originality/value

The analysis of this issue is framed within the bipolar diagram of power that seeks to gain political-economic function of the body (bio-power), via a set of control mechanisms of sovereign power to regulate and manipulate the population (bio-politics), developed by Foucault (1984).

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to report new original evidence on optimal holding periods and optimal asset allocations (Benartzi and Thaler, 1995).

Design/methodology/approach

The authors employ a number of different value functions, a recent dataset, different markets, and varying investment horizons.

Findings

The authors report original evidence across markets and over-time, employing different value functions and varying investment horizons. The results results indicate that, during the past decades, the optimal holding period (seven months during the whole period and four/five months during crises) is not affected by the value function employed, is in accordance with the Myopic Loss Aversion hypothesis, is consistent across markets, but is sensitive to economic crises and shorter to that reported in Benartzi and Thaler (12 months). The optimal asset allocation is also different to that of Benartzi and Thaler during crises periods and/or assuming value functions with probability distortion.

Originality/value

The paper employs a number of different value functions, with and without probability distortion; it compares investor behavior in three important international markets (USA, UK, Germany); as a further robustness test the authors use various investment horizons.
