Abstract

Purpose

Conference publications are an important aspect of research activities. There are generally both oral presentations and poster sessions at large international conferences. One can hypothesise that, for the same conferences, the papers presented in oral sessions should have a higher research impact than the papers presented in poster sessions. However, there has been no related study examining the validity of this hypothesis. In other words, the difference of research impact between papers presented orally or during poster sessions has not been discussed in literature. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to conduct a citation analysis to compare the research impact of papers presented in oral and poster sessions.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, data from three leading conferences in the field of computer vision are examined, namely CVPR (2011 and 2012), ICCV (2011) and ECCV (2012). Several types of citation-related statistics are collected, including the number of highly cited papers (i.e. high number of citations) presented in oral and poster sessions, the total citations of both types of papers, the average citations of oral and poster papers, and the average citations of each frequently cited paper of both types.

Findings

There are three main findings. First, a larger proportion of highly cited papers are from oral sessions than poster sessions. Second, the average number of citations per paper is larger for those presented in oral sessions than poster sessions. Third, the average number of citations for highly cited papers presented in oral sessions is not necessarily greater than for the ones presented in poster sessions.

Originality/value

The originality of this paper is that it is the first attempt to examine the differences of citation impacts of conference papers presented in oral and poster sessions. The findings of this study will allow future bibliometrics research to further explore this related issue for longer periods and different fields.

Abstract

Purpose

To report on the poster sessions from the Tri‐Conference 2006 held in Wichita, Kansas, on April 4‐7, 2006 presented by the graduate students at Emporia State University’s School of Library and Information Management entitled Kansas Libraries Connecting Patrons through Technology.

Design/methodology/approach

Provides a concise review of the poster session.

Findings

The poster sessions demonstrated the special technological requirements of distance learning and how libraries might use that understanding as they face an increasingly non‐traditional patron base.

Originality/value

This paper is a useful summary of the poster sessions of interest to library and information management professionals.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this report is to outline‐few selected presentations of the ETD 2007 symposium based on the main theme “Added values to e‐theses” and highlight major events of the symposium held at Uppsala library, Sweden, during 13‐16 June 2007.

Design/methodology/approach

Conference report.

Findings

The four‐day meeting provided unique opportunity to professional librarians, academicians and other stakeholders of ETDs to explore the collaborative agenda emerged due to the changes in scholarly communication, long‐term digital preservation, ETD repository development and open access movement.

Originality value

The author, who was also a speaker, provides an overview of the ETD 2007 international symposium, which carried out a variety of program viz. keynote and plenary sessions, paper presentations, poster sessions and local sight seeing tours to national museum, Linnaeus garden and libraries at Uppsala.

Abstract

The great success of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in performing near-real time tactical, reconnaissance, intelligence, surveillance and other various missions has attracted broad attention from military and civilian communities. A critical contribution to the increase and extension of UAV applications, resides in the separation of pilot and vehicle allowing the operator to avoid dangerous and harmful situations. However, this apparent benefit has the potential to lead to problems when the role of humans in remotely operating “unmanned” vehicles is not considered. Although, UAVs do not carry humans onboard, they do require human control and maintenance. To control UAVs, skilled and coordinated work of operators on the ground is required.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to provide insight of how conference sessions and poster sessions are relevant to libraries.

Design/methodology/approach

Recently attended IFLA and Internationale Funkaussteilung (IFA) and focused the conference report on generative artificial intelligence (AI).

Findings

Disappointed in the IFLA and IFA conferences and instead find that the email newsletter from Shelly Palmer is much better in keeping up with exponential growth in ChatGPT and other generative AI tools.

Research limitations/implications

This study may provide ideas for libraries to experiment with generative AI tools.

Originality Value

This study is an original report by the authors. All photos were taken by the authors except for a table from the email newsletter of Shelly Palmer, which was included by him from another source.

Abstract

Eighty‐five participants attended the 4th ISHM Display meeting at the Jaarbeurs Congress Centre in Utrecht on 16 October, 1986. The programme of the day started with the annual general membership meeting of the Benelux Chapter. The chairman, Mr T. Kwikkers, gave a short review of the state of affairs of ISHM‐Benelux and of the activities of the last year. He mentioned the temporary enlargement of the executive committee to give a new generation a chance to gain experience in the ISHM organisation and to take up some new activities. In order to raise publicity for ISHM and Hybrid Circuits a new brochure has been designed and a set of material for demonstration purposes was collected. With the material every member of the chapter can easily set up a presentation for schools or customers. This year ISHM‐Benelux has grown from 85 to 100 members and enjoys a healthy financial situation. Next year again emphasis will be put on public relations. Professor R. Govaerts signified that he was no longer available for a position in the executive committee. As Prof. Govaerts has been very active and stimulating for the ISHM‐Benelux Chapter from its foundation in 1976 up to now, the general membership meeting decided to appoint him as (the first) honorary member of this chapter. Except for Professor Govaerts, the sitting executive committee, consisting of 15 members, was re‐elected for another year. After the European conferences in Bournemouth and Hamburg the ISHM‐Benelux chapter is asked to organise the 1991 Conference. The executive committee is already looking out for candidates for a function in the organising committee, which must be formed in the coming year.
