Abstract

Reports the benefits of using extensible markup language (XML) to support knowledge management of financial information. Current search engines cannot provide sufficient performance to support users of financial information, which includes both non‐structured items and well‐structured items. For investors, making a high‐quality decision sometimes requires both. XML can help by providing tags to create structure. XML provides a vendor‐neutral approach. XML authors can create arbitrary tags to describe the format or structure of data, and are not restricted to the tags in the specification for HTML. A prototype XML‐based Electronic Financial Filing System (ELFFS‐XML) has been developed to illustrate how to apply XML to model and add value to traditional HTML‐based financial information by cross‐linking related information from different data sources. Compares the functionality of XML‐based ELFFS with the original HTML‐based ELFFS and SEDAR, an electronic filing system used in Canada, and recommends some directions for future development of similar electronic filing systems.

Abstract

In recent years there has been an increasing move towards publishing in electronic format, sometimes as facsimiles of paper originals and sometimes “born digital”. For anyone concerned with publishing and document supply, whether as a supplier or customer, this trend cannot be ignored. The British Library ran a wide programme of projects (“Initiatives for Access”) to develop an understanding of how digital technologies might be used to support and enhance its operations and some of those particularly relevant to document supply are described. These projects were valuable in highlighting many of the issues to be considered in the use of electronic documents in document supply and an overview of these is given from four perspectives, namely business management, operational, technical and customer. Finally, the library’s current “Digital Library” programme is mentioned, together with two recent additions to the library’s remote service operations: Ariel® for electronic delivery and an integrated electronic journal store.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to provide an overview of the need and current development of document viewers for digitized objects in DSpace repositories, including a local viewer developed for a document collection as like research papers, thesis and dissertation.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors developed the concept for the to preserve and store all types of document in one data base with the help of open source software (OSS). The authors used Java Script programing to integrated and developed the system.

Findings

The major finding of our work is that large document file can be accommodated in DSpace without modifying the originality of the documents and viewing the document in a different dimension as a specialist needs. The combination of current technologies such as Google Doc Viewer and the Internet Archive Book Reader, as well as the growing number of digital repositories hosting digitized content, suggests that the DSpace community will probably benefit with an “out-of-the-box.”

Originality/value

In addition, to exploring the opportunities of OSS implementation in different research institutes, the study includes issues related to the implementation of the open source repository. This is the first time in India, as well as DSpace history to created and developed Document Viewer with the help of DSpace OSS. The study would have value for library professionals and the developer to understand the market in the context of OSS.

Abstract

For as long as I can remember, the year 2000 has been the threshold of the future. For those of us destined to spend much of our lives in the twentieth century — or any time in it at all — those years would, by definition, be spent in the past. The cars of the future would be coming in the year 2000 (the number being written out to make it seem even more amazing and futuristic).

Abstract

Purpose

Many learners with disabilities and special educational needs have difficulty reading or accessing traditional paper examinations at school. The most common method of accommodating these candidates, in Scotland, is the use of reader and scribe. This paper aims to define a specification for digital examination papers for candidates with disabilities, identify a suitable electronic format, and report on trials of these digital assessments.

Design/methodology/approach

The support needs of candidates with disabilities were investigated through interviews with teaching staff and students, analysis of the type of requests made for accommodations, and the reasons for the requests. Findings from this exercise, together with consideration of the requirements of the examination context, were used to construct a specification for digital examination papers. Pilot trials using digital papers were then undertaken.

Findings

Adobe portable document format (PDF) was judged to match the specification most closely. Successful pilot trials in 2005, 2006 and 2007 led to the introduction of digital papers by the Scottish Qualifications Authority in 2008.

Research limitations/implications

There is some evidence that digital papers provide a more independent and less costly alternative to reader/scribes; this requires further research.

Practical implications

Between 2008 and 2011, the number of requests for digital papers increased fivefold, indicating that digital question papers in PDF offer a practical and cost effective method of accommodation in examinations.

Originality/value

This research is of interest to examination boards, assessment designers, educators and learners. It demonstrates that candidates with disabilities can successfully access assessments in digital format.

Abstract

Web impact factors, the proposed web equivalent of impact factors for journals, can be calculated by using search engines. It has been found that the results are problematic because of the variable coverage of search engines as well as their ability to give significantly different results over short periods of time. The fundamental problem is that although some search engines provide a functionality that is capable of being used for impact calculations, this is not their primary task and therefore they do not give guarantees as to performance in this respect. In this paper, a bespoke web crawler designed specifically for the calculation of reliable WIFs is presented. This crawler was used to calculate WIFs for a number of UK universities, and the results of these calculations are discussed. The principal findings were that with certain restrictions, WIFs can be calculated reliably, but do not correlate with accepted research rankings owing to the variety of material hosted on university servers. Changes to the calculations to improve the fit of the results to research rankings are proposed, but there are still inherent problems undermining the reliability of the calculation. These problems still apply if the WIF scores are taken on their own as indicators of the general impact of any area of the Internet, but with care would not apply to online journals.

Abstract

The study surveys and delineates the processes involved in screen‐based information design. This is specifically in relation to the creation of electronic forms and from this offers a guide to their production. The study also examines the design and technological issues associated with the transfer, or translation, of the printed form to the computer screen. How an Eform might be made more visually engaging without detracting from the information relevant to the form’s navigation and completion. Also, the interaction between technology and (document) structure where technology can eliminate or reduce traditional structural problems through the application of non‐linear strategies. It reviews the potential solutions of incorporating improved functionality through interactivity.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to provide a functional review of Greenstone based on selected criteria, viz., user friendliness, administration, customization, international metadata standards and interoperability, search and browse capabilities, security aspects, statistical reports, unique features and limitations.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper is solely based on secondary information collected from different sources like books, articles from national and international journal articles, reports of various organizations and local newspapers as well as the resources available in various websites.

Findings

It was observed that the Greenstone on Windows is less robust than the other operating systems such as Linux. It was reported that during the collection building process of some documents, the system hangs and the user has to turn off the browsers and the interfaces, and no alternate method is available to restore normalcy. The software has been reviewed on selected criteria, and it is suggested to use Greenstone Digital Library Management System (DLMS) system as the most suitable and convenient for installation, uploading of documents and usage for small- and medium-type organizations.

Practical implications

This paper would be of great help for library professionals to learn about diverse features available in the software and in selecting the best DLMS.

Originality/value

The Greenstone DLMS is functionally reviewed and analysed based on selected broad criteria, viz., user friendliness, administration, customization, international metadata standards and interoperability, search and browse capabilities, security aspects and statistical functions.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present an overview of the reorganisation of the Andalusian Parliament's digital library to improve the electronic representation and access of its official corpus by taking advantage of a document's internal organisation. Video recordings of the parliamentary sessions have also been integrated with their corresponding textual transcriptions.

Design/methodology/approach

After analysing the state of the Andalusian Parliament's digital library and determining the aspects that could be improved both in the repository and access mechanisms, this paper describes each component of the developed integrated information system.

Findings

A methodology has been developed to tackle the problem and this could be applied to other similar institutions and organisations. Exploiting the internal structure of the parliament's official documents has also proved to be extremely interesting for users as they are directed towards the most relevant parts of the documents.

Originality/value

The paper presents an application of an information retrieval system for structured documents to a real framework and the integration of multimedia sources (e.g. text and video) for retrieval purposes.
