Mozambique extends along the southeastern coast of Africa. It has a population of around seven million Africans and 150 000 European settlers, not counting the 60 000‐strong army which enforce Portugal's claim to it as an ‘overseas province’. It may therefore seem surprising to hail it as a country in which an educational revolution is taking place, but what is happening there deserves the attention of anyone who is interested not just in formal education but in learning of every kind, and in particular in how it can be related to the needs of a developing society. In the two northern provinces of the country, which are now largely controlled by the Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO), the foundations of Mozambique's future educational system are being laid.
