Abstract

Purpose

This article's purpose is to show how to go about developing a scheme for organizing a policy/procedure manual that will also make a good electronic and paper filing system.

Design/methodology/approach

The article describes the problem of organizing large bodies of information, argues for a hierarchical format, and then shows how to formulate that kind of organizational scheme.

Findings

The finding is that hierarchical schemes are useful for organizing policy and procedure manuals as well as for filing systems.

Practical implications

Having policies and procedures well organized saves time each time they are subsequently used.

Social implications

Efficiency and good public relations demand that libraries have well‐organized policy and procedure manuals.

Originality/value

The value of the article is in offering the theoretical organizational framework for the manual.

Abstract

Purpose

This article's purpose is to offer a process for getting the policy/procedure manual written for libraries who seem to have little staff time to spare.

Design/methodology/approach

The article relates the process to the scheme developed in the previous article and then outlines the process step‐by‐step.

Findings

The finding is that with a judicious amount of time invested, any library can have a clear, well‐written policy/procedure manual which will promote highly desirable library goals.

Practical implications

The process given here includes a built‐in mechanism for continuous improvement.

Social implications

The process should result in better relations with constituents, higher staff productivity, and better staff morale.

Originality/value

The value of the article is in encouraging library directors so that they can and should use staff to help create a working policy/procedure manual with a minimal time investment.

Abstract

This article offers a practical approach to demonstrating the pitfalls of broker‐dealers not preparing written supervisory procedures. By showing examples of legal complications that can arise, as well as outlining the current regulatory directives in favor of written procedures, the author emphasizes that written supervisory procedures cannot be treated lightly or as a back‐burner issue.

Abstract

Good system documentation is the backbone to the success of any automated system, for only through complete and thorough documentation can the user fully understand and utilize a system's capability. This symposium focuses on printed documentation and the many related applications that affect the daily lives of computer users. Printed documentation takes different forms, including user and reference manuals, tutorials, reference cards, and “cheat sheets.” The various forms are produced by both system vendors and system users, the latter frequently adapting and modifying vendor‐prepared documentation to reflect local practice and meet specialized training needs.

Abstract

Describes how the pamphlet collection at the University of Toledo’s Carlson Library is built and maintained, centering on the Pamphlet Collection Manual, which was specifically written for the collection. Discusses the collection’s mission, arrangement, OPAC access, circulation, selection, ordering, online cataloging, processing, weeding and record keeping as detailed in the manual. Provides a review of the literature since 1970 on academic library pamphlet collections.

Abstract

Purpose

A growing body of research has identified time pressure as a key driver of cybersecurity (CS) risks and vulnerabilities. To strengthen CS, organizations use CS documents (e.g. best practices, guidelines and policies) intended to strengthen CS. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of how specifically time pressure is addressed by CS documents.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors conducted a systematic search for CS documents followed by a content analysis of the identified documents. First, the authors carried out a systematic Web search and identified 92 formal and informal CS documents (e.g. security policies, procedures, guidelines, manuals and best practices). Second, they systematically analyzed the resulting documents (n = 92), using a structured approach of data familiarization and low-/high-level coding for the identification and interpretation of themes. Based on this analysis, the authors formulated a conceptual framework that captures the sources and effects of time pressure along the themes of industry, operations and users.

Findings

The authors developed a conceptual framework that outlines the role of time pressure for the CS industry, threats and operations. This provides a shared frame of reference for researchers and practitioners to understand the antecedents and consequences of time pressure in the organizational CS context.

Research limitations/implications

While the analyzed documents acknowledge time pressure as an important factor for CS, the documents provide limited information on how to respond to these concerns. Future research could, hence, consult with CS experts and policymakers to inform the development of effective guidelines and policies on how to address time pressure in the identified areas. A dedicated analysis within each area will allow to investigate the corresponding aspects of time pressure in-depth along with a consideration for targeted guidelines and policies. Last, note that a differentiation between CS document types (e.g. formal vs informal and global vs regional) was beyond the scope of this paper and may be investigated by future work.

Originality/value

This study makes three main contributions to the CS literature. First, this study broadens the understanding of the role of time pressure in CS to consider the organizational perspective along the themes of industry, threats and operations. Second, this study provides the first comprehensive assessment of how organizations address time pressure through CS documents, and how this compares to existing research in academic literature. Third, by developing a conceptual framework, this study provides a shared frame of reference for researchers and practitioners to further develop CS documents that consider time pressure’s role in secure behavior.

Abstract

Describes the internal audit function in a joint venture company. Auditing joint ventures is a fascinating topic, particularly when it involves the nuclear power industry and partnership between China and a foreign collaborator. The internal audit function was established right at the outset and has a high profile in the corporate governance structure. Its position is safeguarded in an audit charter, and a whole range of techniques and approaches guarantees a comprehensive service based on risk assessment. A combination of specific audits, special studies, internal control verifications, pre‐award audits and irregularities reports demonstrate that the internal audit arrangements are at the cutting edge of best practice.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine whether occupational health and safety (OHS) management used to manage musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) in the aged care sector reflects contemporary research evidence of best practice to reduce the incidence of these disorders.

Design/methodology/approach

In total, 58 interviews were conducted with managers and supervisors in the aged care sector across four organisations in Australia. Policies and procedures relating to MSDs were reviewed for each organisation.

Findings

Policies and procedures for managing MSDs do not reflect contemporary evidence, which supports a complex aetiology, related to a range of physical and psychosocial workplace factors. Despite strong evidence that psychosocial factors contribute to MSD development, these were not included in the policies and procedures reviewed. Findings from the interviews management practices including leadership and various components of HRM were functioning well but fragmentation was evident due to the challenging nature of the aged care sector.

Practical implications

To address the significant burden of MSDs in the aged care sector, policies and procedures need to include coverage of psychosocial and physical workplace factors. The development of systematic and integrated OHS management at the workplace level may play an important role in the effective management of MSDs.

Originality/value

This study offers insights into the previously unexplored area of MSD risk management and the role of management practices such as HRM in the aged care sector.

Abstract

Purpose

Human resource records are very important in the successful management of organisations. Despite their importance, they are ignored in records management studies. This study aims to bring to the limelight human resource records management issues that are overlooked despite the numerous studies on records management by examining the effectiveness of human resource records management strategies at a university in Ghana.

Design/methodology/approach

A descriptive survey was used in this study. A combination of census and simple random sampling was used to administer questionnaires to administrators who handle master or working personal files regularly. Data of 228 respondents was processed using SPSS and analysed in frequencies, percentages, mean and standard deviation.

Findings

This study revealed that while most vital documents were found on staff personal files, some documents like medical reports, passport pictures and birth certificates were somewhat unavailable. It was also found that the University had no human resource records policy in its corporate strategic thrust, which is a barrier to effective human resource records management, but the records creation strategies were effective. However, regarding the maintenance, and retention and disposition of human resource records, the strategies were ineffective. Overall, the findings fell short of the ISO 15489 framework for managing records.

Originality/value

This study seeks to bring to the fore human resource records management issues that seem to be overlooked despite the numerous studies on records management.
