Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to discuss the evolution of Big Data (BD) and Analytics in the tourism and hospitality field. It analyses the important role that BD has played so far in tourism and hospitality research and delineates how it might evolve in the future.

Design/methodology/approach

In line with the Platinum Jubilee Special Issue of Tourism Review, this work consists of a critical and conceptual analysis including a mini literature review of recent work in the area at the intersection of BD and tourism and hospitality research.

Findings

Findings suggest that tourism and hospitality scholars are increasingly aware of and adopting BD approaches to retrieve, collect, analyse, report and visualise their data. However, a number of avenues for improvement in the use and interpretation of BD and BD analytics as both sets of methods and technology need to be developed. Moreover, BD analytics promise to enhance a number of digital technologies in tourism and hospitality such as AI and IoT that heavily rely on data. As such, the authors envision that a new digital entrepreneurship field might be shaped within the tourism and hospitality literature. Research pathways for future inquiry at the intersection of BD and tourism and hospitality are outlined.

Originality/value

While thinking retrospectively about research revolving around BD and its role in the tourism and hospitality research field so far, this study also addresses the challenges pertaining to how BD research will be conducted in the next seven decades within tourism and hospitality.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the evolution of the training and development field and present our projections for future inquiry in this important domain.

Design/methodology/approach

This submission is intended for possible publication as a perspective article as per the editor’s call regarding the Platinum Jubilee; thus, it is a brief review of the focal topic and projection of the future.

Findings

Employee training and development will continue to be a priority for the hospitality and tourism industry. The systems framework has been clearly established, but it is evident that additional inquiry is needed to explain how the various framework elements are related. In the decades to come, this framework will be expanded to account for the complexities that emerge from the prolific growth in information and resources for supporting training and development.

Research limitations/implications

While based on decades of previous research, it is always difficult to predict the future, especially 75 years out.

Originality/value

This paper offers a research primer on the focal topic and prescription for future efforts.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to discuss the evolution of the concept of reputation towards online reputation and real time reputation assessment and management. It starts by outline the role of reputation within the branding literature and explains the advantages of having a good (online) reputation. The final section looks into the future of reputation assessment and analysis introducing the concept of real time reputation assessment and management.

Design/methodology/approach

To compile this study, secondary research was conducted; relevant literature was presented in a narrative way to outline core concepts about past and future perspectives on reputation.

Findings

State-of-the-art literature indicates the importance of reputation and the shift towards online reputation. Building on this, the aggregation of social media along with the growing computational power is actually giving the possibility of real-time reputation assessment grasping reputation breakdowns in an instantaneous way.

Originality/value

Literature presents a series of review about the topic of reputation from different angles. This contribution aims at bridging the gap between reputation and online reputation opening the floor for possible discussions about the future of real-time reputation management.

Abstract

The ‘CSIR-Tech: Facilitating lab to market journeys’ case is designed to teach students the strategic intricacies of an organizational network. The case also throws light on the formation and design of a collaborative inter-organizational network. CSIR, a premier R&D organization in India, was plagued with challenges in the commercialization of technologies developed in its constituent laboratories. CSIR-Tech was established as a private-limited company to catalyse the technology development and commercialization process. The case analyses formation of CSIR-CSIR-Tech alliance and discusses how the alliance can help in overcoming challenges associated with commercialization of technologies being developed at CSIR.
