Abstract

Purpose

Irregular windy loads are loaded for a wind turbine. This paper aims to determine the form of gear failure and the working life of the gear system by assessing the dynamic strength of gears and dynamic stress distribution.

Design/methodology/approach

The helical planetary gear system of the wind turbine growth rate gearbox was investigated, and while a variety of clearance and friction gear meshing processes were considered in the planetary gear system, a finite element model was built based on the contact–impact dynamics theory, solved using the explicit algorithm. The impact stress of the sun gear of the planetary gear system was calculated under different loads. An integrated planetary gear meshing stiffness, and the error of system dynamic transmission error were investigated when the planetary gear meshes with the sun or ring gears.

Findings

The load has little effect on the sun gear of the impact stress which was known. The varying stiffness is different while the planetary gear meshes with the sun and ring gears. There were differences between the planetary gear system and the planetary gear, and with load, the planetary gear transmission error decreases.

Originality/value

This study will provide basis knowledge for the planetary gear system.

Abstract

Purpose

Integrated vehicle health management has been developed for several years in different industries, to be able to provide the required inputs to determine the optimal maintenance operations depending on the actual health status of the system. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the potential of a physics-based model (PbM) for prognostics with a real case study, based on the detection of incipient faults and estimate the remaining useful life of a planetary transmission of an aircraft system.

Design/methodology/approach

Most of the research in the area of health assessment algorithms has been focused on data-driven approaches that are not based on the knowledge of the physics of the system, while PbM approaches rely on the understanding of the system and the degradation mechanisms. A physics-based modelling approach to represent metal-metal contact and fatigue in the gears of the planetary transmission of an aircraft system is applied.

Findings

Both the failure mode caused by metal-metal contact as caused by fatigue in the gears is described. Furthermore, the real-time application that retrieves the results from the simulations to assess the health of the system is described. Finally the decision making that can be executed during flight in the aircraft is incorporated.

Originality/value

The paper proposes an innovative prognostics health management system that assesses two important failure modes of the planetary transmission that regulates the speed of the generators of an aircraft. The results from the models have been integrated in an application that emulates a real system in the aircraft and computes the remaining useful life in real time.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to obtain the single-tooth stiffness, single-tooth time-varying meshing stiffness and comprehensive meshing stiffness of the internal and external face gears and to analyze the influence of the modulus, pressure angle and tooth width of each face gear on the single-tooth stiffness of the gear in nutation face gear transmission.

Design/methodology/approach

From the point of view of material mechanics, the gear teeth of nutation face gear are simplified as spacial variable cross-section beams. The shear deformation of gear teeth, the bending deformation of tooth root and the additional elastic deformation caused by the base deformation are gotten by simplified trapezoidal section method, thus the stiffness of nutation face gear teeth can be obtained. The comparison with finite element method results verifies the rationality of simplified trapezoidal section method for calculating the tooth stiffness of nutation face gear.

Findings

The variation of stiffness of internal and external face gears along the meshing line and tooth height in nutation face gear transmission is studied, and the variation laws of single tooth stiffness, single-tooth-pair mesh stiffness and single tooth time-varying meshing stiffness of nutation face gear teeth are obtained.

Originality/value

Nutation face gear transmission is a new type of transmission. The stiffness of face gear teeth is analyzed, and the variation rules of single tooth stiffness, single-tooth-pair mesh stiffness and single tooth time-varying meshing stiffness of nutation face gear teeth are obtained, which not only enriches the research of nutation face gear transmission but also has important guiding significance for the application of nutation face gear in engineering practice.

Abstract

This paper discusses a novel assembly method and system for a commercially available 8 mm diameter miniature planetary gearhead. Our system comprises a commercially available four‐degree of freedom industrial robot, two vision systems, a force feedback system in the robot wrist, and specially designed flexible part feeders. The system has proved successful in assembling planetary gear units independently. Depending on the task, one can select whether to use the high accuracy and repeatability of the robot or alternatively use programmable frequency vibration in the gripper to stochastically align the parts that the robot handles.

Abstract

Purpose

The probability distribution of major length and aspect ratio (major length/minor length) of wear debris collected from gear oil used in planetary gear drive were analysed and modelled. The paper aims to find an appropriate probability distribution model to forecast the kind of wear particles at different running hour of the machine.

Design/methodology/approach

Used gear oil of the planetary gear box of a slab caster was drained out and charged with a fresh oil of grade (EP-460). Six chronological oil samples were collected at different time interval between 480 and 1,992 h of machine running. The oil samples were filtered to separate wear particles, and microscopic study of wear debris was carried out at 100X magnification. Statistical modelling of wear debris distribution was done using Weibull and exponential probability distribution model. A comparison was studied among actual, Weibull and exponential probability distribution of major length and aspect ratio of wear particles.

Findings

Distribution of major length of wear particle was found to be closer to the exponential probability density function, whereas Weibull probability density function fitted better to distribution of aspect ratio of wear particle.

Originality/value

The potential of the developed model can be used to analyse the distribution of major length and aspect ratio of wear debris present in planetary gear box of slab caster machine.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to propose a novel configuration for turbofan engine inlets to increase the overall effectiveness of the engine.

Design/methodology/approach

Conventional fan has been split radially into two blisk stages, namely, core blisk and bypass blisk. The two blisks are driven by a common shaft but rotate at two different revolutions per minutes (RPMs) on the same plane of rotation simultaneously through a planetary gear mechanism. To avoid any mechanical contact between the two stages, a minimum optimum distance is kept between them.

Findings

An apt reduction ratio of planetary gears allows the bypass blisk to rotate at a lower RPM. Thus, unlike conventional geared single fan configuration, transonic speed at the blade’s tip is prevented without decreasing the core stage’s RPM. Consequently, wave drag is eradicated without compromising the engine's core performance as surplus air can always be supplied to it. Compressor stall and surge can also be significantly reduced.

Research limitations/implications

The concept is at its infancy. Extensive iterations and experimentations are required before implementing it practically.

Practical implications

The configuration fulfils to conceive a practical and industrially scalable method to extract better performance from existing engine architecture with minimal changes while reducing noise and emissions, meeting the short-term emission and noise goals unless electric or hydrogen-powered flight fully matured.

Social implications

The present concept reduces engine noise and thereby helps in reduction of airport noise pollution. This concept also helps in reducing global warming by reducing emissions.

Originality/value

The paper presents a novel configuration for a turbofan engine’s inlet fan and discusses its engineering implications and initial feasibility in detail.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present a new methodology, used for dynamic reliability analysis of a gear transmission system (GTS) of wind turbine (WT), which could be used for assembly decision-making of the parts with errors to improve the GTS’s performance.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper involves the dynamic and dynamic reliability analysis of a GTS. The history curves of dynamic responses of the parts are obtained with the developed gear-bearing coupling dynamic model considering the random errors, failure dependency and random load. Then, the surrogate models of the mean and standard deviation of responses are presented by statistics, rain flow counting method and corrected-partial least squares regression response surface method. Further, a novel dynamic reliability model based on the maximum extreme theory, a theory of sequential statistics, equivalent principles and the inverse transform theory of random variable sampling, is developed to overcome the limitations of traditional methods.

Findings

The dynamic reliability of GTS considering the different impact factors are evaluated. The proposed reliability methodology not only overcomes the limitations associated with traditional approaches but also provides good guidance to assembly the parts in a GTS to its best performance.

Originality/value

Instead of constant errors, this paper considers the randomness of the impact factors to develop the dynamic reliability model. Further, instead of the limitation of the normal distribution of the random parameters in the traditional method, the proposed methodology can deal with the problems with non-normal distribution parameters, which is more suitable for the real engineering problems.

Abstract

Purpose

The finite element method (FEM) has become the prevalent technique used for analyzing physical phenomena in the field of structural, solid and fluid mechanics. The output of scientific papers is fast growing and professionals are no longer able to be fully up‐to‐date with all the relevant information. The purpose of this paper is to provide a bibliographical review on the application of FEM in mechanical engineering, specifically for the analyses and simulations of gears and gear drives from the theoretical as well as practical points of view.

Design/methodology/approach

The following topics on gears and gear drives are handled from the computational points of view: gears in general, spur gears, helical gears, spiral bevel and hypoid gears, worm gears and other gear types and gear drives. The paper is organized into two parts. In the first one each topic is handled in a short text, relevant keywords are presented and current trends in applications of finite element techniques are briefly mentioned. The second part lists references of papers published for the period 1997‐2006.

Findings

This bibliography is intended to serve the needs of engineers and researchers as a comprehensive source of published papers on design, analysis and simulation of gears and gear drives.

Originality/value

The bibliography listed is by no means complete but it gives a comprehensive representation of different finite element applications on the subjects. It will save time for readers looking for information dealing with described subjects, not having an access to large databases or willingness to spend time with uncertain information retrieval.

Abstract

This paper gives a review of the finite element techniques (FE) applied in the analysis and design of machine elements; bolts and screws, belts and chains, springs and dampers, brakes, gears, bearings, gaskets and seals are handled. The range of applications of finite elements on these subjects is extremely wide and cannot be presented in a single paper; therefore the aim of this paper is to give FE researchers/users only an encyclopaedic view of the different possibilities that exist today in the various fields mentioned above. An Appendix included at the end of the paper presents a bibliography on finite element applications in the analysis/design of machine elements for 1977‐1997.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present the design and implementation of a new manipulator with six joints driven by a single DC motor.

Design/methodology/approach

The manipulator consists of several modules, each of which has the twisting and pivoting degrees of freedom. Two clutches and one brake are mounted to control each joint. A clutch model based on PWM control is built to compute the average velocity of each clutch. Two parameters are involved in the model: PWM frequency and duty ratio. PWM frequency is limited by the natural frequencies of structure with all postures. The theoretical duty ratio should be adjusted according to the clutch model. Two experiments – line tracking and arc tracking – are carried out to verify the effectiveness of the control system.

Findings

The study has designed a manipulator with six joints driven by a single DC motor which powers all the modules through a main shaft and several clutches. In the manipulator, all the modules are supplied with a constant speed input and provide a bi‐directional variable output. Experimental results show the clutch model built for the manipulator can be applied to the joint control of all multi‐joint manipulators.

Originality/value

The paper describes a dexterous and light‐weight manipulator driven by a single motor and designed with bi‐directional joints.
