Abstract

Purpose

The objective of this research is to know the degree of influence that strategic planning (SP) exerts on the tangible and intangible results of business microenterprises in the state of Guanajuato, Mexico.

Design/methodology/approach

The methodological design was quantitative, explanatory, observational and cross-sectional, where a sample of 407 young leaders of microenterprises from the state of Guanajuato, Mexico, was obtained. To evaluate hypotheses, a structural equation model (SEM) was developed. Regarding the goodness and adjustment indices of the SEM, they were absolutely acceptable.

Findings

The results obtained through Pearson’s correlation show that there is a positive and significant relationship between SP and the tangible and intangible results of microenterprises. In addition, through the results obtained with the SEM model, it is statistically demonstrated that SP positively and significantly influences the tangible and intangible results of microenterprises in the state of Guanajuato, Mexico.

Research limitations/implications

In this research, only SP was valued as a variable that intervenes in the process of achieving tangible and intangible results to achieve the business objectives of entrepreneurial microenterprises in the state of Guanajuato. It is essential to point out that other variables that intervene in the process must be considered to generate tangible and intangible results. It is recommended to carry out further research under these variables to identify strategies for improving entrepreneurial microenterprises for their growth, sustainability and rapid positioning in a highly competitive market.

Practical implications

SP represents one of the tools to achieve the success of microenterprises through tangible and intangible results. However, microenterprises show a need to involve the use and application of SP to define clear indicators that contribute to obtaining satisfactory tangible and intangible results.

Originality/value

The findings are relevant and of great value, because there is currently not enough research that focuses on the variables analyzed, in this sense, SP and the tangible and intangible results of young entrepreneurial leaders of microenterprises in the Mexican context. The limitations of this study lie in the low participation and interest of young microenterprise entrepreneurs in the state of Guanajuato, Mexico.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this article is to develop a methodology for the identification of a desired normative scenario, acceptable and feasible, based on a set of prospective scenarios.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper presents strategic alliances as one fundamental tool in the process of constructing the future. The alliances are based on prospective scenarios, within strategic interactions.

Findings

The central key is the view of the most probable future as a NASH balance point. This point identifies not only a balance of forces, but also the negotiation limits for each actor and therefore the strategic alliances possible. The alliances, if achieved, create a “super actor”, destabilizing the original balance, and creating a new balance point, and therefore a more likely new future.

Originality/value

This article develops a methodology for the identification of a desired normative scenario, acceptable and feasible, based on a set of prospective scenarios.

Abstract

Purpose

Discussions about sustainability in the organizational context present a blind spot. It appears when we ask if a company recognized as sustainable, keep what it means compatible with corporate sustainability premises and its values on the strategic decision process. In this context, the purpose of this paper is, on the light of sensemaking and the decision-making theory, to reflect on possible divergences between meanings attributed to sustainability, available on official documents, and the meanings identified in current actions and narratives related to sustainability goals in the researched organization.

Design/methodology/approach

The research adopted a qualitative approach, characterized as descriptive, using as methods narrative analysis and documentary research, that were carried out from sensemaking theory.

Findings

It was identified coherence between strategic statements and present sustainable actions. However, in view of theoretical reference used, it was identified an imprecision in sustainability perspectives of decision making. Inconsistency tends to promote internal resistance, difficulty to commit to all areas and prejudice long-term results.

Research limitations/implications

Future studies should compare the decision-making meaning attributed to sustainability in companies of different market segments.

Practical implications

The studied case shed light on the importance of managers having at their disposal a map that relates strategic objectives and actions aimed at sustainability. The lack of this compromises the organizational results focused on corporate sustainability.

Originality/value

The understanding of the meanings attributed gives rise to perceptions of possible and relevant flaws in the alignment between the discourse and the practice of sustainability, supporting possibilities of the fine adjustments in strategic decision making.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present the proposal of a strategy model planning, that is lined up to a system of quality management, being also considered the strategic system of performance measurement balanced scorecard (BSC), that aims the strategy alignment of the organizations.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper consists of a research of literature on general concepts of strategies planning, system of management of quality and BSC, in academic books and articles, in order to assist it in the development of the model considered.

Findings

The main conclusions relate the possibility of the environment insertion on the quality in stages of a strategy planning, helping the companies to define dedicated displays for the quality area, and grouped in the perspectives of the BSC. The model also searches to consider the quality in the strategic process of planning, being established the objective, and strategies directed toward area.

Research limitations/implications

The main limitation related to the paper itself relates the necessity to applicate the model in an organization that is in strategic planning process elaboration.

Originality/value

The importance of this paper is in considering the area of quality in the same degree of importance than other areas of the company, as in fact it must occur, deserving then specific actions. Starting from the principle that all the areas must have objectives interrelated to the global objective organization reach, the model suggests that for each environment of the quality they are established it indicates to be according to BSC's perspective.

Abstract

Purpose

Universities have an important role in articulation of the transformation of society, in the formation of individuals capable of acting in the processes that enable sustainable development goals (SDGs), in theoretical areas and in practical and concrete actions. Within the University of Passo Fundo (UPF), Brazil, some practices are being adopted from this perspective. This paper aims to present the efforts of UPF to achieve SDGs in its activities.

Design/methodology/approach

For the development of these research were consulted all administrative instruments of the Foundation University of Passo Fundo, from the proposals and guidelines of its creation in the decade of the 1960s to the most recent of the Institutional Development Plan PDI 2017-2021 and other bibliographic references. From the documentation, the effective results achieved by University Social Responsibility Policy (PRSU) and Institutional Environmental Policy were evaluated.

Findings

A process of consolidating the thematic of the SDGs within the university structure is perceived, with a participatory vision of the academic community.

Research limitations/implications

Although PRSU the policy has been developed since 2005, the effective results are recent and under construction.

Practical implications

The study identified a direction for a change of paradigms, moving from isolated and non-continuity actions to the establishment of normative guidelines.

Social implications

In this sense, this paper seeks to contribute to the process of discussion and generation of practices for the implementation of an agenda with its own goals in the areas of university’s action at local and regional levels, as well as contributing to a wide level.

Originality/value

The paper reports the process of development of the social and environmental policies at UPF to include SDGs in its academic and administrative procedures, which should encourage another similar university to follow suit.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to identify what are the main causes that lead strategies to decline at execution phase.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper adopted the strategy of survey with the 69 Brazilian businessmen. The questionnaire was developed from 16 causes pointed out in the literature and the results analyzed using Cronbach’s α coefficient, multidimensional scaling, exploratory factor analysis and Pearson correlation coefficient.

Findings

The results of statistical analysis showed that the main causes are primarily associated to leaders’ defaults during execution strategies, lack of support and feedback of senior management, no involvement of the teams during the strategies formulation, failure of communication on the strategic objectives in all organizational levels, and others.

Research limitations/implications

The 69 businessmen work in different sectors and there may be specific causes for each sector. The research presented by this paper did not have objectives to analyze specific sectors of the economy.

Practical implications

The results are extremely important and useful for managers during the implementation phase of the strategies and researchers in the field of business strategies.

Originality/value

There are no research with the same focus and objective presented by this paper about Brazilian companies.

Abstract

Purpose

In a systemic approach, a ship is a system in which people and organizations interact directly and indirectly in all processes from construction, during the route and at the destination, throughout its useful life, until eventual scrapping or disposal process. The purpose of this paper is to take on the UN 2030 Agenda ‒ Goal 14 to propose a management model that meets environmental guidelines for assessing impacts caused by the cruise ships.

Design/methodology/approach

To verify the proposed model, a quantitative survey using non-probability purposive sampling was conducted among ports, environmental sustainability experts and ocean cruise companies. The empirical data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and structural equation modeling.

Findings

Findings have confirmed five environmental requirements that shipping companies must manage on their cruise ships to meet Goal 14: input management, waste management, air quality, energy management and water management. Adopting and disseminating sustainable development models provides transparent information about actions taken and results of environmental management, and it may change the perception of the organization’s image, which is relevant to win and maintain environment-friendly customers, adding intangible value to the tourism product.

Research limitations/implications

One of the limitations of the study is the research sample, especially ocean cruise companies, which can have biased results, as they are potential sources of environmental impacts. However, this was not the case, since the answers were similar to those of the other two groups surveyed.

Originality/value

The originality of the study is justified by researchers who argue that information provided by shipping companies on sustainability is very limited, as according to previous research, the convergence between strategy formulation model and environmental sustainability as a principle to be incorporated into the management of oceangoing vessels has not been studied.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper contains descriptive discussions of the implementation of strategic planning in a not‐for‐profit (NFP) organization in Brazil, highlighting the factors that engender emergent strategies. This issue requires more study to enrich both the Brazilian literature in particular and the international literature in general in the field of how emergent strategies triggered in NFP organizations.

Design/methodology/approach

Reflections on the debate over managerial strategy and implementation are presented. This theoretical basis supports the discussion of a case study of a Brazilian NFP organization. Interviews were conducted with a range of volunteers with the aim of identifying and discussing the implementation changes that were made to previously planned projects.

Findings

The main theme emerging from the cases was the lack of commitment of volunteers, which forced change on previously planned projects.

Originality/value

Research that investigates actions that force the managers of NFP organizations to alter their established action plans is not well canvassed in the context of the literature on Brazil. This paper proposes some future research questions in this context.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to plan the layout of the production area of an industrial kitchen of a theme restaurant through the application of the systematic layout planning (SLP) methodology and the establishment of layout indicators with a specific application in the restaurant business.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors applied the SLP methodology in the industrial kitchen of a theme restaurant in order to plan and develop layout alternatives. Such layout alternatives were then evaluated according to a set of specific indicators consolidated based on a literature review. Finally, a multi-criteria decision-making tool was used to support the selection of the best layout alternative and suggest to the case study area.

Findings

The main results could be highlighted as: first, an area, previously unexplored, of approximately 5.40 m² ended up being used as a productive area for the operations; second, 40 percent reduction in work-in-process by removing the refrigerators of groceries and the freezer from the production area; third, indirect indicators, such as customer satisfaction and the employee’s workplace environment, have increased their performance, since customers were better served and working environment became more conducive to a good employee performance.

Originality/value

Most research in layout planning is typically developed in productive industrial areas, and this paper contributes to the understanding the differences of implementing SLP methodology in a food service business, such as restaurant, and proposes the utilization of specific layout indicators.
