Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims to raise awareness in the industry of design automation tools, especially in early design phases, by demonstrating along a case study the seamless integration of a prototypically implemented optimization, supporting design space exploration in the early design phase and an in operational use product configurator, supporting the drafting and detailing of the solution predominantly in the later design phase.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the comparison of modeled as-is and to-be processes of ascent assembly designs with and without design automation tools, an automation roadmap is developed. Using qualitative and quantitative assessments, the potentials and benefits, as well as acceptance and usage aspects, are evaluated.

Findings

Engineers tend to consider design automation for routine tasks. Yet, prototypical implementations support the communication and identification of the potential for the early stages of the design process to explore solution spaces. In this context, choosing from and interactively working with automatically generated alternative solutions emerged as a particular focus. Translators, enabling automatic downstream propagation of changes and thus ensuring consistency as to change management were also evaluated to be of major value.

Research limitations/implications

A systematic validation of design automation in design practice is presented. For generalization, more case studies are needed. Further, the derivation of appropriate metrics needs to be investigated to normalize validation of design automation in future research.

Practical implications

Integration of design automation in early design phases has great potential for reducing costs in the market launch. Prototypical implementations are an important ingredient for potential evaluation of actual usage and acceptance before implementing a live system.

Originality/value

There is a lack of systematic validation of design automation tools supporting early design phases. In this context, this work contributes a systematically validated industrial case study. Early design-phases-support technology transfer is important because of high leverage potential.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to develop a decision support tool to improve planning for the rehabilitation of water distribution networks (WDN) using the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) method and the urgency level score.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper the AHP method was used to outclass the indicators having a strong influence on the deterioration of the pipes and the score of the level of urgency is calculated to establish the rehabilitation program (short, medium and long term). The proposed model was tested for the case of the city of Souk-Ahras in Algeria.

Findings

Based on the judgments of twenty-four experts, the relative weights of the three physical, operational and environmental criteria of the pipeline were calculated and found to be equal to 35.40%, 55.60% and 9.00%, respectively. The two indicators, number of failures and pressure, were found to have the highest overall weights. The results of this article can be used to improve decision-making in WDN rehabilitation planning in Algeria.

Research limitations/implications

The main objective of water companies is to provide citizens with good quality drinking water in sufficient quantity. However, over time, WDN age, degrade and deteriorate. This degradation leads to a drop in the performance through the degradation of water quality and an increase in loss rates. WDN rehabilitation is one of the most widely adopted solutions to address these drawbacks.

Originality/value

Application of a hybrid method (AHP- Level of Emergency) for the planning of the rehabilitation of WDN in Algeria.

Abstract

Purpose

For billing purposes, heavy-haul locomotives in Sweden are equipped with on-board energy meters, which can record several parameters, e.g., used energy, regenerated energy, speed and position. Since there is a strong demand for improving energy efficiency in Sweden, data from the energy meters can be used to obtain a better understanding of the detailed energy usage of heavy-haul trains and identify potential for future improvements.

Design/methodology/approach

To monitor energy efficiency, the present study, therefore, develops key performance indicators (KPIs), which can be calculated with energy meter data to reflect the energy efficiency of heavy-haul trains in operation. Energy meter data of IORE class locomotives, hauling highly uniform 30-tonne axle load trains with 68 wagons, together with additional data sources, are analysed to identify significant parameters for describing driver influence on energy usage.

Findings

Results show that driver behaviour varies significantly and has the single largest influence on energy usage. Furthermore, parametric studies are performed with help of simulation to identify the influence of different operational and rolling stock conditions, e.g., axle loads and number of wagons, on energy usage.

Originality/value

Based on the parametric studies, some operational parameters which have significant impact on energy efficiency are found and then the KPIs are derived. In the end, some possible measures for improving energy performance in heavy-haul operations are given.
