This paper aims to investigate the performance of OECD countries' long-term productivity during the period of 1975–2018.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the performance of OECD countries' long-term productivity during the period of 1975–2018.

Design/methodology/approach

This study employed different approaches to evaluate how efficiency scores vary with changes in inputs and outputs: Data Envelopment Analysis (CRS, VRS and FDH), TOPSIS and TOPSIS of these scores.

Findings

The findings suggest that, during the period of this study, countries with higher freedom of religion and with Presidential democracy regimes are positively associated with higher productivity.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study that uses efficiency models to assess the productivity levels of OECD countries based on several contextual variables that can potentially affect it.

Abstract

In this chapter, we analyze and reflect on how our cultural identities and educational experiences as international students who pursued a doctoral degree in the United States affected and influenced our teaching philosophy and praxis as professors and educators. In this sense, we examine how our cultural identities and experiences help us define and shape our teaching praxis in the contexts in which we teach. We both are professors of color – Latino and Latino-Japanese – who graduated from doctoral programs in the United States. Currently, we work and serve culturally and linguistically diverse students, including first-generation students, in public higher education settings in Chile and the United States. We used a collection of narratives to delve into the significance of these events in our praxis. As theoretical lenses, we analyze these narratives using cultural identity and the reflecting teacher to examine our practices and identities as educators. We both conclude that our reflections, experiences, and cultural identities have been instrumental in the process of developing a professional identity that guides our teaching praxis in ways that are critical and social justice oriented.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper investigates the probable differential impact of the confirmed cases of COVID-19 on the equities markets of G7 and Nordic countries to ascertain possible interdependencies, diversification and safe haven prospects in the era of the COVID-19 pandemic over the short-, intermediate- and long-term horizons.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors apply a unique methodology in a denoised frequency-domain entropy paradigm to the selected equities markets (Li et al. 2020).

Findings

The authors’ findings reinforce the operability of the entrenched market dynamics in the COVID-19 pandemic era. The authors divulge that different approaches to fighting the pandemic do not necessarily drive a change in the deep-rooted fundamentals of the equities market, specifically for the studied markets. Except for an extreme case nearing the end (start) of the short-term (intermediate-term) between Iceland and either Denmark or the US equities, there exists no potential for diversification across the studied markets, which could be ascribed to the degree of integration between these markets.

Practical implications

The authors’ findings suggest that politicians should pay closer attention to stock market fluctuations as well as the count of confirmed COVID-19 cases in their respective countries since these could cause changes to market dynamics in the short-term through investor sentiments.

Originality/value

The authors measure the flow of information from COVID-19 to G7 and Nordic equities using the entropy methodology induced by the Improved Complete Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition with Adaptive Noise (ICEEMDAN), which is a data-driven technique. The authors employ a larger sample period as a result of this, which is required to better comprehend the subtleties of investor behaviour within and among economies – G7 and Nordic geographical blocs – which largely employed different approaches to fighting the COVID-19 pandemic. The authors’ focus is on diverging time horizons, and the ICEEMDAN-based entropy would enable us to measure the amount of information conveyed to account for large tails in these nations' equity returns. Furthermore, the authors use a unique type of entropy known as Rényi entropy, which uses suitable weights to discern tailed distributions. The Shannon entropy does not account for the fact that financial assets have fat tails. In a pandemic like COVID-19, these fat tails are very strong, and they must be accounted for.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims to establish a comprehensive optimization analysis model for a helicopter roll on the ground and take off based on optimal control method. The trajectory and control of the entire process are studied, and the key factors affecting the helicopter takeoff distance are analyzed.

Design/methodology/approach

First, based on the equivalent stiffness and damping, the landing gear model is established, and a six-degree-of-freedom helicopter model is formed. Then, the simulation of the roll-on takeoff is transformed into a nonlinear optimal control problem (NOCP). Meanwhile, a hybrid single-multiple shooting method-based transcription process is used for discretizing the problem, leading to a finite nonlinear programming model, which is solved by sequential quadratic programming. Finally, the process was calculated and compared with flight test data, which verified the feasibility of the NOCP. The influence of takeoff weight, takeoff power and liftoff airspeed on the takeoff distance of the helicopter was analyzed.

Findings

The results show that the takeoff weight can be increased by 17% under the maximum takeoff power, which is roll-on takeoff at an altitude of 0 m. When the helicopter takes off with the maximum weight at an altitude of 5000 m, the liftoff airspeed should be over 49.2 km/h.

Originality/value

The novelty of this paper lies in the comprehensive consideration of helicopter taxiing and taking-off phases, and the application of optimal control theory to establish a comprehensive analysis model, which can quickly analyze the maximum takeoff weight, takeoff distance, optimal liftoff speed and so on. Meanwhile, the method is verified based on the flight data.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to conduct a bibliometric analysis of previously published articles related to adventure tourism to assimilate the current trend, gaps in the literature and future research direction of this particular field.

Design/methodology/approach

A total of 585 documents were retrieved from the Scopus and Web of Science core collection for analysis using VOSviewer. Performance and science mapping analysis was performed to comprehensively review the adventure tourism publication.

Findings

The findings show that publication in this field is growing significantly. Cluster analysis using the co-citation of references method resulted in four broad research areas: risk in adventure tourism, adventure tourism motivation, adventure tourism experience and adventure tourism product development.

Originality/value

The study acts as an archive of adventure tourism publications. Potential authors can quickly comprehend what is expected and current happening in adventure tourism field. It can assist scholars in identifying gaps and possible future directions.
