Abstract

Purpose

The application of pervasive systems to healthcare has increased in recent years, but resistance to such systems by patients remains high. In this study, the aim is to examine patient and caregiver perceptions of this technology to further develop an understanding of the benefits and functionalities that prospective patients deem as desirable, undesirable, inadequate or in need of further development. The study was conducted as part of the European Union BraveHealth project which is developing a patient‐centred pervasive healthcare system to support cardiac patients at home in everyday life using innovative monitoring and diagnosis, thereby enabling the patient to be more proactive in health management.

Design/methodology/approach

Focus group studies were conducted in Italy and the Midlands area of the UK, along with a 31‐item questionnaire. The findings were categorized under seven main headings: personal profile; benefits; adoption; acceptance; risks; security, privacy and trust; and (use of) cell phone.

Findings

In the focus group study, most participants felt that there is a great future for this technology and showed positive response to the potential benefits but there are concerns over reliability, security, privacy and trust.

Social implications

Even though this study constitutes only a small group of participants, the Italian and UK study does represent similar patients' and caregivers perceptions towards at‐home healthcare systems.

Originality/value

This paper contributes to the understanding of the benefits and functionalities that prospective patients and care‐givers deem as either desirable or undesirable.

Abstract

Purpose

Ambient service provisioning with the least human participation in a pervasive computing environment, which is composed of interconnected devices and sensors, raises several trust and security issues. Accurate measuring of the integrity of the nodes that are willing to interact in this intimate environment can boost the trust evolution process, particularly in the uncertainty state and initiation phase. The paper aims to discuss these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper presents a unified approach in calculating the trust value among the nodes by leveraging some trusted computing functionalities. The approach aggregates different trust metrics like context, recommendation, and history to compute the trust index of each party more accurately. The paper also describes several existing remote attestation techniques including the chosen attestation technique for the model. The paper simulated the behaviour of the model in different scenarios and evaluates its responsiveness when the trustworthiness among peer nodes can be attested.

Findings

The results obtained from different simulated scenarios demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed model. It is shown that trust evaluation process in the proposed model is very granular and also can be fine-tuned according to the application and context. The model strength in solving the uncertain situations and assigning appropriate initial trust values is shown, as well. Finally, the paper describes the future research plan to evaluate the accuracy of the model.

Originality/value

The novel idea of applying remote attestation in trust determination may open up new avenues of research in the study of trust management and trust models.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the study was to empirically validate the linkages between IoT adoption and how it overarched influenced the patient care service engagement. This contributes to the body of knowledge and helps hospital managers to understand the relationship and relevance of IoT adoption; otherwise healthcare sector are late movers towards technology adoption. This gives a nuanced framework towards establishing empirically validated framework which will motivate healthcare services providers to be motivated to adopt and implement IoT enabled care delivery. The physician patient interaction and alignment during decision making will foster positive word of mouth, superior care service and reduce extra overheads for healthcare providers without compromise or rather with increment in service delivery proposition.

Design/methodology/approach

The study theoretically and empirically describes that with the adoption of internet of things (IoT) devices in health care, better services can be provided to patients by using partial least square – structure equation modelling-based robust technique and explains the better understanding of the health-care process with the help of information pervasiveness, physician-patient orientation and improved patient and physician involvement in the decision-making process.

Findings

This study shows that wearable IoT device adoption in health-care service delivery opens new opportunities and disrupts the conventional and traditional way of health-care service delivery by empowering the patient to take part in decision-making and enhancing their engagement in health-care service delivery.

Research limitations/implications

The study might influence by generalizability. Perception-based cross-examination knowledge from the patient’s perspective. It is likely that patients who use these devices will grow accustomed to using them and become more capable of using them. Thus, time-series tests have not been used to catch enhanced skills. New patients’ experiences will be altered over time. Regardless, non-response bias and traditional process bias received excessive interest.

Practical implications

The study aims at unravelling how the adoption of IoT enabled practices and usage of IoT devices bolsters the available data points in the context of healthcare especially with respect to patient care delivery. The study conceptualizes and empirically validates how the usage of IoT interface enabled technology enables better patient treatment and caregiver participation. The study puts forth a nuanced understanding regarding how pervasively available ubiquitous care information fosters shared decision making. This study further emphasizes that importance of ensuring a reliable computing environment devoid of privacy and security risks. The study attempts at Emphasizing empirically how the enhanced information pervasiveness catapults the patient-provider interactions, through health data exchange. Highlighting the importance of search feature in cloud storage and recovery mechanisms. The study not only fulfills the overarching linkage between enhanced service engagement with IoT adoption, it provides a mental map and ready to refer framework for hospital and healthcare experts to refer to, which prescribes thar care providers must build new methods aimed at empowerment of patients to participate and take more inclusive role. This unique confluence between patients and physicians will unravel the sync; helping not only avoid costly decision errors, but also improve patient care delivery environment. Patients should be permitted to participate in decision-making,inspire patients to be participatory.

Originality/value

The study efforts to empirically investigate and discover the link between how wearable sensor-based IoT enhances health-care service engagement is underway. Using primary data this linkage validation allows the community and readers at large to gain a nuanced understanding of how superior interaction is enabled by a digital-health-care process with the help of IoT-enabled information pervasiveness, physician-patient orientation and empowered involvement.

Abstract

Purpose

The Internet of Things (IoT), which enables smart objects to collect and exchange data, has a variety of application domains used in everyday life including healthcare. As a set of promising next-generation technologies in the healthcare domain, Healthcare-related Internet of Things (H-IoT) promises to facilitate better healthcare by offering data-driven insights. While effective in practice at large, emerging data concerns arise because of the inscrutable black-box systems. Inspired by the notion of human data interaction, this paper seeks to understand how people engage with the H-IoT data that is about and produced by themselves and to elucidate the main data issues and challenges involved in the development of H-IoT.

Design/methodology/approach

This work conducted a comprehensive survey and integrated the method of content analysis by systematically review the recently published H-IoT research work in the healthcare domain.

Findings

This study thoroughly surveyed more than 300 research studies published in the last decades and classified seven H-IoT end-user groups, and three H-IoT data types that are important to H-IoT comprehension. Attention to human data interaction, our study also highlights several critical issues associated with this notion in the context of H-IoT.

Originality/value

This study will support H-IoT research by characterizing the data issues and challenges exist in the context of H-IoT user and data interaction. The findings will provide insights in designing for effective interactions with data in the H-IoT.

Abstract

Purpose

Mobile health, i.e. m-Health possesses huge potential, especially to the developing countries and remote locations of developed countries. The success of such systems may create a healthier society through eradicating health incidents, which cannot otherwise be addressed with “brick and mortar” type of health systems. The purpose of this paper is to develop an m-Health success model from users’ perspective and validate in a developing country context.

Design/methodology/approach

Epistemologically, positivist approach has been adopted for the current research. An initial research model was developed from existing information system (IS) literature, which was then validated with survey data applying partial least square structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM).

Findings

The results summarise that continuance intention (CI) of m-Health services is dependent on perceived value (PV) and user satisfaction (STF); PV positively influences STF. Moreover, platform quality, quality of medical advice, and interaction quality have positive and direct effect on PV and STF; finally, CI drives to better quality of health life.

Practical implications

The findings of this study provide strategic implications to health managers and practitioners recognising the determinants of m-Health success and comprehending their relationships. It is underscored that, in order to secure the success of an m-Health system in a given society both human and technology-related components are vital and therefore should be taken care of.

Originality/value

This is the first attempt that develops and validates an m-Health system success model, particularly from the context of a country with low-health profile. Moreover, the contextualisation of the related variables and extension of existing IS success models is theoretically original.

Abstract

Purpose

The increase in the number of healthcare wearable (Internet of Things) IoT options is making it difficult for individuals, healthcare experts and physicians to find the right smart device that best matches their requirements or treatments. The purpose of this research is to propose a framework for a recommender system to advise on the best device for the patient using machine learning algorithms and social media sentiment analysis. This approach will provide great value for patients, doctors, medical centers, and hospitals to enable them to provide the best advice and guidance in allocating the device for that particular time in the treatment process.

Design/methodology/approach

This data-driven approach comprises multiple stages that lead to classifying the diseases that a patient is currently facing or is at risk of facing by using and comparing the results of various machine learning algorithms. Hereupon, the proposed recommender framework aggregates the specifications of wearable IoT devices along with the image of the wearable product, which is the extracted user perception shared on social media after applying sentiment analysis. Lastly, a proposed computation with the use of a genetic algorithm was used to compute all the collected data and to recommend the wearable IoT device recommendation for a patient.

Findings

The proposed conceptual framework illustrates how health record data, diseases, wearable devices, social media sentiment analysis and machine learning algorithms are interrelated to recommend the relevant wearable IoT devices for each patient. With the consultation of 15 physicians, each a specialist in their area, the proof-of-concept implementation result shows an accuracy rate of up to 95% using 17 settings of machine learning algorithms over multiple disease-detection stages. Social media sentiment analysis was computed at 76% accuracy. To reach the final optimized result for each patient, the proposed formula using a Genetic Algorithm has been tested and its results presented.

Research limitations/implications

The research data were limited to recommendations for the best wearable devices for five types of patient diseases. The authors could not compare the results of this research with other studies because of the novelty of the proposed framework and, as such, the lack of available relevant research.

Practical implications

The emerging trend of wearable IoT devices is having a significant impact on the lifestyle of people. The interest in healthcare and well-being is a major driver of this growth. This framework can help in accelerating the transformation of smart hospitals and can assist doctors in finding and suggesting the right wearable IoT for their patients smartly and efficiently during treatment for various diseases. Furthermore, wearable device manufacturers can also use the outcome of the proposed platform to develop personalized wearable devices for patients in the future.

Originality/value

In this study, by considering patient health, disease-detection algorithm, wearable and IoT social media sentiment analysis, and healthcare wearable device dataset, we were able to propose and test a framework for the intelligent recommendation of wearable and IoT devices helping healthcare professionals and patients find wearable devices with a better understanding of their demands and experiences.

Abstract

Purpose

This study's purpose is to propose an integrated model based on expectation-confirmation model (ECM), task-technology fit (TTF) model, and updated DeLone and McLean information system (IS) success model to examine whether quality factors and TTF as antecedents to physician beliefs can affect physicians' continuance intention of the cloud-based hospital information system (HIS) and performance impact.

Design/methodology/approach

Sample data for this study were collected from physicians at five hospitals in Taiwan. A total of 500 questionnaires were distributed, and 305 (61.0 percent) usable questionnaires were analyzed using structural equation modeling in this study.

Findings

This study verified that physicians' perceived information quality, system quality, general technical support service quality, and cloud storage service quality all positively caused their PU, confirmation, and perceived TTF in the cloud-based HIS, which together explained their satisfaction with the system, and subsequently led to their continuance intention of the system and performance impact.

Originality/value

First, IS-related and cloud-related quality factors are simultaneously taken into consideration within this study's research model, and empirical results reveal deep insights into quality evaluation in the field of physicians' cloud-based HIS continuance intention. Next, this study contributes to an understanding of TTF in explaining physicians' cloud-based HIS continuance intention that is difficult to explain with only their utilitarian perception of the system, and places emphasis upon physicians' perception of performance impact greatly driven by their perceived TTF and continuance intention of the system, thus the results can shed light on antecedents and outcome of physicians' cloud-based HIS continuance intention.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to propose an integrated model based on expectation-confirmation model (ECM) and technology acceptance model (TAM) to examine whether environmental, human, organizational and technology factors as the antecedents to physicians’ beliefs can affect their satisfaction and continuance intention of the cloud-based hospital information system (HIS).

Design/methodology/approach

Sample data for this study were collected from physicians at six hospitals in Taiwan. A total of 600 questionnaires were distributed, and 471 (78.5 per cent) usable questionnaires were analyzed using structural equation modeling in this study.

Findings

This study proposes a solid research model that is based on ECM and TAM, four types of factors, environmental factor, human factor, organizational factors and technology factors, as antecedents to physicians’ continuance intention of the cloud-based HIS have been examined. This study’s results strongly support the research model with all hypothesized links being significant, and control variables have no confounding effects on physicians’ continuance intention of the cloud-based HIS.

Originality/value

This study contributes to physicians’ continuance intention toward the cloud-based HIS based on ECM, TAM, technology-organization-environment framework and human-organization-technology fit framework, and reveals deep insights into the evaluation of determinants in the field of physicians’ continuance intention of the cloud-based HIS. Accordingly, it is particularly worth mentioning that IS and non-IS determinants are simultaneously evaluated and taken into consideration in this study’s theoretical development of physicians’ continuance intention of the cloud-based HIS to acquire a more comprehensive and robust analysis.

Abstract

Purpose

Internet of things (IoT) promises advantages in different sectors, especially the health-care sector. Due to its capabilities for chronic disease management, IoT has attracted the attention of researchers. Nowadays, there is research that focuses on the use of IoT for chronic disease management. However, the use of IoT in various contexts faces different barriers. This paper aims to explore Iranian experts’ conceptions of the barriers to using IoT in Iran regarding its application for chronic disease management.

Design/methodology/approach

This study follows a phenomenographic method to investigate Iranian experts’ conceptions of the barriers to using IoT in Iran regarding its application for chronic disease management.

Findings

The results show that there are four categories of description (governance, technical, economic and social barriers) that vary among experts’ conceptions.

Originality/value

The findings of the present work could provide valuable insights for managers and policymakers who want to address IoT barriers.
