Abstract

Purpose

This present three-wave longitudinal study aims to elucidate underlying mechanism in high-performance work practices (HPWPs) and job performance relationship by examining the role of person–job as a potential mediator.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected from 357 faculty members of universities in Punjab (India) using a well-structured questionnaire for four consecutive months. Hypotheses were tested using PLS-SEM software.

Findings

This study results substantiated HPWPs have a direct favorable impact on the person–job fit because their extensive engagement policies, such as employee empowerment and rewards, help employees to perceive their jobs as being a good fit. Furthermore, these practices fulfil employment expectations for employees, resulting in job fit and boosting the employee’s performance; highlighting person–job fit as potential mediator.

Research limitations/implications

Grounding on the person–environment congruence theory, this study shed light on the relationship between HPWPs and job performance via person–job fit in the Indian higher education sector. This develops a unique management philosophy and strategies for long-term sustainable growth of organizations to give proper concrete evidence for the significance of human resource management (HRM).

Practical implications

This study findings persuade HR professionals in higher education institutions to actively engage in reconsidering and implementing their current HPWPs efficaciously to ensure that the employees are well-suited to their roles, i.e. increased person–job fit and perform at a higher level. Furthermore, considering the favorable impact of HPWPs on job fit and performance, it is pertinent to extensively use these practices in organizations all over the world especially across developing nations as a successful HRM solution.

Originality/value

This longitudinal study provides first-hand information on person–job fit intervening as a mediator in HPWPs and job performance relationship thereby contributing to the current corpus of HPWPs work. This fills the gap in HPWPs and job performance literature by identifying a novel concept of person–job fit that is mostly unexplored in developing countries like India.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper examines the relationships between regulatory-focused job crafting, i.e. promotion- and prevention-focused job crafting, person-job fit and internal employability and explores the direct and underlying mediation process using conservation of resources and job demands-resources theories.

Design/methodology/approach

Survey data collected from 425 executives of India based public sector enterprises were used to test hypotheses.

Findings

Promotion- and prevention-focused job crafting respectively had a contrasting relationship with needs-supplies fit. The relationship with demands-abilities fit was statistically significant only in the case of prevention-focused job crafting. These two job crafting forms respectively had a positive and a negative effect on internal employability, both directly as well as indirectly through person-job fit.

Practical implications

Employees can pursue promotion-focused job crafting and avoid prevention-focused job crafting to improve their person-job fit as well as internal employability which subsequently may have multiple favourable outcomes at an organizational and individual level.

Originality/value

The study, for the first time, empirically investigates the differential role of individuals' efforts in the form of promotion- and prevention-focused job crafting, in influencing internal employability and explains its underlying mechanism through person-job fit. These interrelationships may have important implications for employees' job demand management process and job choices.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims at explore the intervening role of servant leadership in tourism businesses' outcomes, in the context of travel agencies. Drawing on servant leadership theory, the authors develop a multimediation model exploring the relationships between servant leadership and person–job fit, work–life balance, work engagement, innovative work behavior and job crafting.

Design/methodology/approach

Using SmartPLS3, data collected from 942 travel agencies operating in Egypt, a questionnaire was used to obtain data on how travel agency employees envisage their organization’s adoption of servant leadership, person–job fit, job crafting, work–life balance, work engagement and innovative work behavior.

Findings

The authors show that servant leadership correlates positively with person–job fit, work–life balance, work engagement, innovative work behavior and job crafting, while job crafting correlates positively with work–life balance, work engagement and innovative work behaviors. The partial mediating roles of both job crafting and person–job fit in the link between servant leadership and work–life balance, and the partial mediating role of work engagement in the link between servant leadership and innovative work behaviors.

Originality/value

Up to date, research on the effects of servant leadership on person–job fit, job crafting, work–life balance, work engagement and innovative work behavior has been inadequate. In terms of contextual applicability, an empirical investigation of the relationship between these factors in travel agencies is not available. By empirically examining these relationships in the context of Egyptian travel agencies, the current study has bridged a gap in the tourism and hospitality literature, human resources management and organizational behavior literature.

Propósito

El objetivo de este artículo es explorar el papel que desempeña el liderazgo de servicio en los resultados de las empresas turísticas, en el contexto de las agencias de viajes. Basándonos en la teoría del liderazgo de servicio, desarrollamos un modelo de mediación múltiple que explora las relaciones entre el liderazgo de servicio y la adecuación de la persona al trabajo, el equilibrio entre el trabajo y la vida personal, el compromiso laboral, el comportamiento laboral innovador y el diseño proactivo del puesto de trabajo.

Diseño/metodología/enfoque

Con SmartPLS3 se analizaron datos recopilados de 942 agencias de viajes que operan en Egipto mediante un cuestionario con el que se obtuvo información sobre cómo los empleados de agencias de viajes prevén que su organización adopte el liderazgo de servicio, el ajuste persona-trabajo, el diseño proactivo del puesto de trabajo, el equilibrio entre el trabajo y la vida personal, el compromiso laboral y el comportamiento laboral innovador.

Hallazgos

Mostramos que el liderazgo de servicio se correlaciona positivamente con el ajuste persona-trabajo, el equilibrio entre el trabajo y la vida personal, el compromiso laboral, el comportamiento laboral innovador y el diseño proactivo del puesto de trabajo, mientras que el diseño del puesto de trabajo se correlaciona positivamente con el equilibrio entre la vida laboral y personal, el compromiso laboral y los comportamientos laborales innovadores. Mostramos también el papel mediador parcial del diseño proactivo del puesto de trabajo y del ajuste persona-trabajo, en el vínculo entre el liderazgo de servicio y el equilibrio entre el trabajo y la vida personal, asi como el papel mediador parcial del compromiso laboral en el vínculo entre el liderazgo de servicio y los comportamientos laborales innovadores.

Originalidad/valor

Hasta la fecha, la investigación sobre los efectos del liderazgo de servicio en la adecuación de la persona al trabajo, el diseño proactivo del puesto de trabajo, el equilibrio entre el trabajo y la vida personal, el compromiso laboral y el comportamiento laboral innovador ha sido insuficiente. En términos de aplicabilidad contextual, no se disponía de una investigación empírica de la relación entre estos factores en las agencias de viajes. Al examinar empíricamente estas relaciones en el contexto de las agencias de viajes egipcias, el presente estudio cubre un vacío en la literatura sobre turismo y hostelería, gestión de recursos humanos y comportamiento organizacional.

Abstract

Purpose

This study investigated the influence of ambiguous customer expectations and customer demandingness, which reflect hindrance and challenge demands, on the boundary spanning behaviors (BSBs) of frontline bank employees (FBEs) through person-job fit and work engagement. It also examined the moderating effect of customer stewardship between job demands and work engagement.

Design/methodology/approach

Data of 296 FBEs in the retail banking industry in the Republic of Korea were collected through an online survey and analyzed.

Findings

Ambiguous customer expectations acted as hindrance demands and negatively affected FBEs' psychological process. Additionally, customer demandingness positively affected FBEs' psychological process as challenge demands. Moreover, person-job fit and work engagement improved the BSBs of FBEs as a psychological motivation process. Lastly, customer stewardship buffered the negative influence of ambiguous customer expectations on work engagement while strengthening the positive influence of customer demandingness on work engagement.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the marketing literature by presenting customer-related characteristics influencing the BSBs of FBEs and exploring the psychological response processes. First, this study presents empirical evidence that ambiguous customer expectations and customer demandingness play the role of hindrance and challenge demands, respectively. Second, it confirms that customer-related characteristics affect the BSBs of FBEs through psychological processes. Finally, it enriches the authors' understanding of customer stewardship as a job resource by exploring the role of customer stewardship in moderating the relationship between different types of job demands and work engagement.

Abstract

Purpose

Drawing on affective events theory, the purpose of this study is to examine the mediation effect of positive affect on the association between fit (e.g. person-organization fit and person-job fit) and organizational commitment in the hospitality industry. The secondary aim is to investigate the moderated mediation effect of hospitality employees’ calling on these associations.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors collected data from 248 hotel employees in China at three different time points. A moderated mediation model was examined by using the bias-corrected bootstrapping method.

Findings

Results revealed that person-organization fit and person-job fit indirectly influenced organizational commitment via positive affect. Calling was found to moderate the indirect influences of person-organization and person-job fit on organizational commitment via positive affect.

Practical implications

Managing employees’ affective experiences in the hospitality industry and promoting their organizational commitment are key strategies for hospitality organizations to promote service quality and retain their employees. This study suggests that hospitality organizations should actively attempt to improve employees’ fit perceptions and promote their sense of calling.

Originality/value

By theorizing and investigating the mediating role of positive affect and the moderating role of calling in the association between fit and employee commitment, this research extends existing knowledge on the association between fit–job attitudes and makes notable contributions to the hospitality literature on fit, affect, calling and job attitudes.

Abstract

Purpose

Using social information processing and sense-making theory, the current study examines how the poly-contextual factors and social environment of employees provide unique cues and shape an employee's person-job (PJ) fit perceptions in ways that enable males to perceive a better PJ fit than their female counterparts at work. These perceptions of PJ fit act as mediating processes between gender-based differences in HR commitment or HR control attributions.

Design/methodology/approach

After collecting two waves of data over a six-month period from a sample of 498 banking sector professionals in Pakistan, the hypothesized relationships were tested using hierarchical multiple regression.

Findings

It was found that gender (female) was positively related to HR control attributions and negatively related to PJ fit perceptions and HR commitment attributions. The mean differences between males and females concerning these study variables were significant. Also, PJ fit mediated the relationship between gender and HR attributions.

Originality/value

The study contributes to the advancement and understanding of the predictors of HR attributions by examining the poly-contextual factors that shape unique experiences, knowledge structures and social information processing, thus forming distinct PJ fit perceptions and subsequent HR commitment or control attributions for males and females.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to understand whether the relationship between psychological empowerment, psychological well-being and higher person–job fit based on the self-determination theory could have mitigated the Great Resignation crisis.

Design/methodology/approach

A cross-sectional study was conducted by collecting data from 351 respondents working in Indian organizations (Nifty, 2020) using a standardized questionnaire by using the multifaceted psychological construct within the work context.

Findings

This study highlights that a moderated mediation relationship between psychological empowerment (specifically “impact” or “choice”) and psychological well-being (specifically “environmental mastery”) is impacted by the person–job “demand-abilities” fit and enhances the intention to stay in the current “great resignation” context.

Practical implications

The authors map the theoretical and empirical research of the “intention to stay” by developing the “demand-abilities” fit, which leads to higher levels of psychological empowerment and psychological well-being to build adaptability through effective learning practices.

Originality/value

The authors establish the underlying linkages and future research agenda to strengthen the “intention to stay” during the extraordinarily stressful context of the covid-19 pandemic.

Abstract

Purpose

Our proposed machine learning model contributes to improving the quality of Hire by providing a more nuanced and comprehensive analysis of candidate attributes. Instead of focusing solely on obvious factors, such as qualifications and experience, our model also considers various dimensions of fit, including person-job fit and person-organization fit. By integrating these dimensions of fit into the model, we can better predict a candidate’s potential contribution to the organization, hence enhancing the Quality of Hire.

Design/methodology/approach

Within the scope of the investigation, the competencies of the personnel working in the IT department of one in the largest state banks of the country were used. The entire data collection includes information on 1,850 individual employees as well as 13 different characteristics. For analysis, Python’s “keras” and “seaborn” modules were used. The Gower coefficient was used to determine the distance between different records.

Findings

The K-NN method resulted in the formation of five clusters, represented as a scatter plot. The axis illustrates the cohesion that exists between things (employees) that are similar to one another and the separateness that exists between things that have their own individual identities. This shows that the clustering process is effective in improving both the degree of similarity within each cluster and the degree of dissimilarity between clusters.

Research limitations/implications

Employee competencies were evaluated within the scope of the investigation. Additionally, other criteria requested from the employee were not included in the application.

Originality/value

This study will be beneficial for academics, professionals, and researchers in their attempts to overcome the ongoing obstacles and challenges related to the securing the proper talent for an organization. In addition to creating a mechanism to use big data in the form of structured and unstructured data from multiple sources and deriving insights using ML algorithms, it contributes to the debates on the quality of hire in an entire organization. This is done in addition to developing a mechanism for using big data in the form of structured and unstructured data from multiple sources.

Abstract

Purpose

The motivation for this study is to understand the stressful situations leading to great resignation and evaluate the cognitions of psychological attachment (PA) and organizational attractiveness (OA) to mitigate this crisis, using the attachment theory as the theoretical basis.

Design/methodology/approach

A cross-sectional study was conducted on individuals employed in Indian organizations (Nifty 50) to identify the most impactful cognitions underlying the dynamics between person–job fit (P-J fit) and the intention to stay (ITS).

Findings

This study highlighted that a serial mediation relationship between PA (specifically “internalization”) and OA is influenced by the P-J “needs–supplies” fit, particularly during extraordinarily stressful times. Managers must re-emphasize PA and OA as core organizational resources that must be prioritized, maintained and refined to reinforce employees' intent to stay in their organizations.

Originality/value

No research has studied P-J fit, PA, OA, underpinned by the attachment theory to reinforce the ITS given the context of the great resignation triggered by the pandemic's extraordinarily stressful situation.

Abstract

Purpose

There are two objectives in this study. First, testing the relationship between person-organization fit (P-O fit) and person-job fit (P-J fit) on turnover intentions. Second, examining the moderating role of kinship on the relationship between P-O fit and P-J fit on turnover intentions.

Design/methodology/approach

This research was conducted at private universities in Lampung with a total of 282 respondents. The analytical method used to test the research hypothesis was moderated regression analysis (MRA)

Findings

There are five proposed hypotheses, and all of them are supported. The findings of this study reveal that P-O fit and P-J fit are predictors that are negatively related to turnover intentions. Furthermore, kinship moderates the relationship between P-O fit and P-J fit on turnover intentions.

Research limitations/implications

This study adds to the literature on turnover intentions in universities and underscores some important advances and contributions in developing a human resource management theory related to social capital. Based on the findings of this study, organizations are expected to pay more attention to P-O fit, P-J fit and kinship to reduce the level of turnover intentions. Employers are expected to choose people who match the organization's values and work and create interpersonal relationships between them to reduce turnover intentions, which mean the findings extend the theory of attraction-selection-attrition (ASA), social exchange and social capital. These findings provide theoretical and pragmatic insights for human resource management practitioners and relevant stakeholders.

Practical implications

Practically, the concepts of P-O fit and P-J fit are important to be considered by the leadership because creating a suitable environment for employees will trigger positive behaviors. Leaders must find the right people for the environment and the right environment for the employees. Furthermore, this study has implications for a relational approach to overcoming turnover intentions in the workplace. The relational approach is in the form of kinship. Organizations that encourage opportunities for social interaction among members can reduce employee turnover and tend to create positive social capital.

Social implications

In social practice, kinship connects people in an organization. The existence of kinship in an organization helps academicians get relational and emotional support from coworkers and superiors so that they will feel a family relationship that may not be found in other organizations, which eventually reduces turnover intentions.

Originality/value

The originality of this study lies in investigating the moderating role of kinship on the relationship between P-O fit and turnover intentions. Kinship in this study is different from research in general. “Kinship” here is based on a kinship perspective because of the peculiarities of Asian culture, especially in Indonesia, namely kinship without blood relations and marriage.
