Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to develop a conceptual model explicating Muslims intention towards charitable giving of cash waqf. Drawing from altruism theoretical paradigm, the present study investigates the role of perceived ihsan, Islamic egalitarian and Islamic religiosity on cash waqf contribution.

Design/methodology/approach

The survey method using Islamic banking respondents were exploited for data collection. A total sample of 264 completed questionnaires were analysed.

Findings

The results of exploratory factor analysis indicate strong constructs nomological validity. The structural equation modelling using path analysis was also performed to estimate the proposed research framework. The result of model testing shows significant relationship between perceived ihsan, Islamic egalitarian and Islamic religiosity on cash waqf contribution.

Practical implications

The results suggest that perception of ihsan and notion of equality significantly influences Muslims’ sense of religiosity, which subsequently encourages the generosity giving behaviour of waqf. Implications of the findings and suggestions for future research are also discussed.

Originality/value

The study introduces two new dimensions of perceived ihsan and Islamic egalitarian. Specifically, the present study offers fresh new insights of charitable giving of cash waqf behaviours from Islamic perspective.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to explore the root cause of growing gap in Islamic moral ideals and practices by examining paradigmatic foundation and moral axioms of Islamic business ethics. It compares and contrasts Tawhidi and secular paradigms in terms of their moral axioms and ethical mandates.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper first presents the paradigmatic foundation of Islamic ethics, namely, ihsan ethics. Second, it compares Tawhidi paradigm of Islam with secular paradigm in respect to their ontological, axiological, anthropological and teleological differences. Third, it links to Islamic moral axioms to the relevant paradigmatic pillars. Fourth, it defines “ihsan ethics” based on Tawhidi paradigm and moral axioms. Finally, it sheds some light on the gap between moral ideals and realities through the theory of ihsan ethics.

Findings

The paper attempts to provide strong conceptual and theoretical tools to understand ethical problems in the Muslim societies. The paper makes a strong case that Muslim minds shall be de-secularized to perceive the reality, truth and telos within Tawhidi worldview. As Muslims reach the level of ihsan by perceiving transcendental reality, they are likely to practice what they preach.

Originality/value

The paper proposes “ihsan ethics” based on Tawhidi worldview and Islamic moral axioms.

Abstract

Purpose

In an effort to build a useful conceptual framework that enhances understanding and permits practical application of ethics, this paper aims to understand the relationship and impact of Islamic marketing ethics on brand credibility. Nowadays, recognizing the ethical dilemmas associated with business is an important aspect of marketing strategy (Murphy et al. 2012). As known, the pharmaceutical industry has access to a deep pool of resources with the potential to maintain an esteemed reputation for offering innovative products that improve the public’s health and well-being (Kim and Ball, 2013). However, recent years have yielded several high-profile safety issues associated with particular medications along with a growing perception that pharmaceutical companies are unethical and drive up healthcare costs by prioritizing profits over consumer needs (USA Today/KFF/Harvard SPH, 2008). Therefore, the reputation of the pharmaceutical industry has been damaged with only 11 per cent of individuals considering pharmaceutical companies to be trustworthy (Harris Interactive Poll, 2010). Thus, the pharmaceutical industry in Yemen is the target of this paper and the relationship between its brands’ credibility and Islamic marketing ethics has been highlighted.

Design/methodology/approach

In a study of 106 respondents, exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis were conducted to understand the relationship, between brand credibility and Islamic marketing ethics. Correlation and regression analyses were performed to evaluate the hypothesized relationships between the variables.

Findings

Significant and positive relationships were confirmed between brand credibility and Islamic marketing ethics, namely, Annasihah, Al-Istiqamah, Al-E’etedal, Al-Ihsan, As-Sidq, Attaqwa and Al-Amanah. The eighth Islamic marketing ethic, Attasamoh, has been rejected.

Originality/value

The paper evaluates brand credibility in relation to Islamic marketing ethics in the pharmaceutical industry in Yemen. Islamic marketing ethics have been confirmed as a new variable that correlates with brand credibility and helps in boosting the level of credibility.

Abstract

Purpose

The potential of waqf is so great in Indonesia but has not been optimized. This paper aims to offer a model for waqf institutions to adopt financial technology for developing productive and social waqf. The authors cunduct an assesment of the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM3), Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT2) in seeing to the crowdfunders’ behavior.

Design/methodology/approach

This study adopted a structural equation using the partial least square approach to test the hypotheses. Based on purposive sampling, the spread of questionnaires through online surveys throughout Indonesia consists of all islands. A total of 297 respondents collected the questionnaires.

Findings

Based on the findings, acceptance models have a positive and significant impact on the behavioral intentions of crowdfunders, while Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology have no significant effect.

Research limitations/implications

The sample of this study involved potential crowdfunders from all over the islands in Indonesia, but these results cannot be generalized because of limitations in terms of the sampling technique used. However, the results of this study can be used as an illustration of how crowdfunders behave in donating money using financial technology.

Practical implications

The results of this study provide a comprehensive perspective for policymakers, especially the Indonesian Waqf Board as the waqf authority that regulates waqf nazir to improve quality by adopting crowdfunding financial technology in collecting waqf funds. In addition, in terms of implications for the government, this waqf crowdfunding model will reduce spending and increase economic growth.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this paper is the first in looking at the waqf crowdfunding in Indonesia by looking at two reliable technology determinant models. Studies on cash waqf in Indonesia are many, but they do not look at the issue of crowdfunding, which has gained more attention recently. This paper aims to fill this gap, and this becomes the novelty.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the factors that determine consumer behaviour of ijarah home financing using the Islamic theory of consumer behaviour (ITCB). In particular, the specific contract used is al-ijarah muntahia biltamleek. Subsequently, the term al-ijarah muntahia biltamleek home financing is used throughout the paper.

Design/methodology/approach

Drawing upon the ITCB, the present study examines patronage factors for al-ijarah muntahia biltamleek home financing. This study’s data were drawn from valid 409 usable questionnaires.

Findings

Partial least square results suggest that the role of iman, Islamic mortgage support and maqasid consumer index are significantly related to consumer behaviour. In turn, consumer behaviour is instrumental in determining religious satisfaction.

Research limitations/implications

Two limitations were observed that provide direction for future studies. Firstly, the current study is only tested in one particular Islamic home financing product that may explain why the generalisation is an issue. Secondly, the theory is still in its infancy stage, which, of course leads to some criticisms pertinent to its parsimony and applicability to other settings. Despite these limitations, however, this study aims to suggest a so-called Islamic model of factors that can explain consumer behaviour of a particular Islamic home financing product. In particular, scrutinising the product acceptance from the context of the ITCB can open a new debate in this area.

Practical implications

This study indeed reduces the theory–practice gap by suggesting new indicators that are workable to improve consumers’ positive perception of Islamic home financing. Given the results obtained, the ITCB provides a better prediction for consumer behaviour of al-ijarah muntahia biltamleek home financing.

Originality/value

This study expands the applicability of the ITCB to include al-ijarah muntahia biltamleek home financing.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the zakat al-mustaghallat acceptance index (ZAMAi) through the examination of its predictors identified in this work, including attitude, social influence, self-efficacy, amount of information and Islamic altruism, at best.

Design/methodology/approach

Drawing from the attitude-social influence-self efficacy model, this study evaluated the effects of these factors on ZAMAi using an empirical investigation surveying 184 respondents who were identified as the owners of residential properties in Malaysia.

Findings

In the core model, this study found significant outcomes for the effects of attitude, social influence, self-efficacy, amount of information and Islamic altruism, along with the demographic items tested. For post hoc analysis, this study found two significant outcomes drawn from the role of attitude as a mediating variable in this study.

Research limitations/implications

The results obtained from this study should be used with caution owing to its limited applicability and the constraints of subjects and variables in the framework developed.

Practical implications

The results obtained can become a yardstick to gauge the success of zakat al-mustaghallat acceptance in Malaysia.

Originality/value

This study introduced new measures of ZAMAi, where Malaysian landlords are brought into play.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to enlighten the effects of Islamic religiosity, Islamic altruism and Islamic debt collection policy (IDCP) on millennials’ acceptability of tawarruq-based ar-rahnu in Malaysia.

Design/methodology/approach

This study applies the factors drawn from the Islamic theory of consumer behaviour (ITCB) and uses data obtained from a survey of 267 respondents to examine the impact of these factors on millennials’ acceptability of tawarruq-based ar-rahnu.

Findings

The findings indicate that Islamic religiosity, Islamic altruism and IDCP are all important factors influencing millennials’ acceptability of tawarruq-based ar-rahnu.

Research limitations/implications

The study is narrowed down in scope in terms of the broader context of tawarruq-based ar-rahnu and the variables retrieved from the ITCB, which may explain its limited impact.

Practical implications

Considering the effects of the variables investigated in this study might assist enhance product acceptance among consumers.

Originality/value

This study is focussed on tawarruq-based ar-rahnu in the context of the ITCB, taking a different approach than past research on the subject.

Abstract

Purpose

Gold investment is one of the essential long-term investments for many to diversify their investment portfolios. Muslims are continuously looking for halal products and services in any aspect of life and one of them is Shari’ah gold investments (SGI). However, evidence pertinent to Muslims’ behaviour towards Shari’ah gold is somewhat inconclusive and for that, a new empirical investigation is needed to reduce the gap, at best. Hence, the purpose of this study is to study factors determining SGI behaviour in Penang, Malaysia.

Design/methodology/approach

By using the Islamic theory of consumer behaviour (ITCB), this study examines the determinants of the SGI behaviour. The questionnaire survey was distributed and the data gathered was analysed using partial least square structural equation modeling.

Findings

All hypothesised hypotheses were instrumental in explaining the factors determining SGI behaviour in the context of Penang, Malaysia.

Research limitations/implications

This study has at least two limitations, namely, confined generalisations of the variables used and the limited context of the research conducted.

Practical implications

This study sheds light on the determinants influencing SGI behaviour, at best.

Originality/value

This study is original in terms of its final output that enlightens the significant effects of iman, Islamic altruism, maqasid consumer index on the behaviour of investors on Shari’ah gold within the ITCB’s context along with integrated religious satisfaction.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the factors influencing online sadaqah acceptance among university graduates in Malaysia.

Design/methodology/approach

Drawing upon the theory of reasoned action (TRA), this study proposed a model to examine the effects of attitude, subjective norm, altruism and empathy on the online sadaqah acceptance, with the use of a questionnaire survey.

Findings

The results reveal that altruism empathy attitude subjective norm were significantly related to online sadaqah acceptance.

Research limitations/implications

This study has at least three limitations, namely, confined generalisations of the variables used the limited selection of samples and the specific context of the research conducted.

Practical implications

The findings provide valuable insights on improving online sadaqah acceptance from the perspective of university graduates.

Originality/value

This study is original in terms of its final output that enlightens the significant effects of altruism and empathy on the online sadaqah acceptance within the TRA’s context.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to develop a new framework to measure waqif preference of waqf-based qardhul hassan financing in Malaysia.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a maqāṣid approach, this study’s data were drawn from 286 valid usable questionnaires to examine the effects of consumer, family, ummah and humanity factors on the preference.

Findings

The study found that the said factors sourced from Attia’s maqāṣid al-Shariah were instrumental in determining waqif preference to donate in waqf-based qardhul hassan financing.

Research limitations/implications

Like others, this study’s findings are limited in terms of their generalisations and applications. The theory, context and variables used should be expanded in future works.

Practical implications

The results obtained are useful as a yardstick to enable the offered waqf-based qardhul hassan financing for improved mutual well-being among different classes of the wealth of societal groups in Malaysia. Furthermore, the results provide valuable insights into the direction for practitioners mainly managers involved in introducing waqf-based qardhul hassan financing as a new Islamic social financial instrument for poor and needy folks, at best.

Originality/value

This study is novel in terms of the proposed conceptual framework, where the waqif perspective comes into play.
