Abstract

Purpose

The analysis of the optimal production and preventive maintenance with lockout/tagout planning problem for a manufacturing system is presented in this paper. The considered manufacturing system consists of two non-identical machines in passive redundancy producing one type of part. These machines are subject to random breakdowns and repairs. The purpose of this paper is to minimize production, inventory, backlog and maintenance costs over an infinite planning horizon; in addition, it aims to verify the influence of human reliability on the inventory levels for illustrating the importance of human error during the maintenance and lockout/tagout activities.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper is different compared to other research projects on preventive maintenance and lockout/tagout. The influence of human error on lockout/tagout as well as on preventive maintenance activities are presented in this paper. The preventive maintenance policy depends on the machine age. For the considered manufacturing system the optimality conditions are provided, and numerical methods are used to obtain machine age-dependent optimal control policies (production and preventive maintenance rates with lockout/tagout). Numerical examples and sensitivity analysis are presented to illustrate the usefulness of the proposed approach. The system capacity is described by a finite-state Markov chain.

Findings

The proposed model taking into account the preventive maintenance activities with lockout/tagout and human error jointly, instead of taking into account separately. It verifies the influence of human error during preventive maintenance and lockout/tagout activities on the optimal safety stock levels using an extension of the hedging point structure.

Practical implications

The model proposed in this paper might be extended to manufacturing systems, but a number of conditions must be met to make effective use of it.

Originality/value

The originality of this paper is to consider the preventive maintenance activities with lockout/tagout and human error simultaneously. The control policy is obtained in order to find the solution for the considered manufacturing system. This paper also brings a new vision on the importance of human reliability during preventive maintenance and lockout/tagout activities.

Abstract

Purpose

Supply chain resilience capabilities are usually considered in light of some anticipated events and are as passive assets, which are “waiting” for use in case of an emergency. This, however, can be inefficient. Moreover, the current COVID-19 pandemic has revealed difficulties in the timely deployments of resilience assets and their utilization for value creation. We present a framework that consolidates different angles of efficient resilience and renders utilization of resilience capabilities for creation of value.

Design/methodology/approach

We conceptualise the design of the AURA (Active Usage of Resilience Assets) framework for post-COVID-19 supply chain management through collating the extant literature on value creation-oriented resilience and practical examples and complementing our analysis with a discussion of practical implementations.

Findings

Building upon and integrating the existing frameworks of VSC (Viable Supply Chain), RSC (Reconfigurable Supply Chain) and LCNSC (Low-Certainty-Need Supply Chain), we elaborate on a new idea in the AURA approach – to consider resilience as an inherent, active and value-creating component of operations management decisions, rather than as a passive “shield” to protect against rare, severe events. We identify 10 future research areas for lean resilience integrating management and digital platforms and technology.

Practical implications

The outcomes of our study can be used by supply chain and operations managers to improve the efficiency and effectiveness by turning resilience from passive, cost-driving assets into a value-creating, inclusive decision-making paradigm.

Originality/value

We propose a novel approach to bring more dynamics to the notion of supply chain resilience. We name our approach AURA and articulate its two major advantages as follows: (1) reduction of disruption prediction efforts and (2) value creation from resilience assets. We offer a discussion on ten future research directions towards a lean resilience.

Abstract

The work deals with the topic of spare parts management in a space system. The paper is divided into three parts. The first one is dedicated to the characterization of the system structure and presents the particularities related to the spare‐elements procurement. Modelling is the object of the second part. After having exposed the bases of the problem to be solved, a macro‐model is introduced. Each of the three elements of an orbital system, namely ground, flying and transport, is then described with a Petri net. Operation specificities of every element are then listed and integrated into the model. A concrete application of this modelling is given in the last part. It concerns the Columbus laboratory of the International Space Station. A representative function is selected and several supply strategies are evaluated.

Purpose

This study aims to interest the eco-design of the systems. This interest is justified by the need to reducing the environmental impacts in phase of the design plant.

Design/methodology/approach

It consists of a proposal for a combined methodology of the industrial systems eco-design. This methodology is based on the simultaneous use of a cost-benefit analysis (CBA) method and dependability tools.

Findings

In the developed approach, we use the dependability tools for modeling of the functional behavior of the industrial systems and the CBA method for optimization of the industrial system constraints which are in fact environmental constraints.

Practical implications

Methodology suggested constitutes an invaluable help to ensure a better integration of the environment in production.

Originality/value

Methodology suggested is tallied by the CBA method, which makes it possible to manage the conflict relation between production and environmental protection.

Abstract

Purpose

The authors consider a system which is a part of a complex equipment (e.g. aircraft, automobile, medical equipment, production machine, etc.), and which consists of N independent series subsystems. The purpose of this paper is to determine simultaneously the system design (reliability) and its preventive maintenance (PM) replacements periodicity which minimize the total average cost per time unit over the equipment useful life, taking into account a minimum required reliability level between consecutive replacements.

Design/methodology/approach

The problem is tackled in the context of reliability-based design (RBD) considering at the same time the burn-in of components, the warranty commitment and the maintenance strategy to be adopted. A mathematical model is developed to express the total average cost per time unit to be minimized under a reliability constraint. The total average cost includes the cost of acquiring and assembling components, the burn-in of each component, preventive and corrective replacements performed during the warranty and post-warranty periods. A numerical procedure is proposed to solve the problem.

Findings

For any given set of input data including components reliability, their cost and the costs of their preventive and corrective replacements, the system design (reliability) and the periodicity of preventive replacement during the post-warranty period is obtained such as the system’s total average cost per time unit is minimized. The obtained results clearly indicate that a decrease in the number of PM actions to be performed during the post-warranty period increases the number of components to be added at each subsystem at the design stage.

Research limitations/implications

Given that the objective function (cost rate function) to be minimized is non-linear and involves several integer variables, it has not been possible to derive the optimal solution. A numerical procedure based on a heuristic approach has been proposed to solve the problem finding a nearly optimal solution for a given set of input data.

Practical implications

This paper offers to manufacturers a comprehensive approach to look for the most economical combination of the reliability level to be given to their products at the design stage, on one hand, and the PM policy to be adopted, on the other hand, given the offered warranty and service for the products and reliability requirements during the life cycle.

Originality/value

While the RBD problem has been largely treated, most of the published works have focussed on the development or the improvement of solving techniques used to find the optimal configuration. In this paper the authors provide a more comprehensive approach that considers simultaneously RBD, the burn-in and warranty periods, along with the maintenance policy to be adopted. The authors also consider the context of products whose component failures cannot be rectified through repair actions. They can only be fixed by replacement.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this paper is to illustrate a solution that can be used to reduce the severity of breakdowns and improve performances in the cellular manufacturing (CM) system with unreliable machines.

Design/methodology/approach

The performance of CM system is conditioned by disruptive events, such as the failure of machines, which randomly occurs and penalizes the performance of the cells, seriously disturbing the smooth working of the factory. To overcome the problem caused by the breakdowns, the authors develop a solution, based on the principle of virtual cell and the notion of intercellular transfer that can improve the availability of the system. In this context, the use an analytical method based on Markov chains to model the availability of the cell. The results are validated using simulation.

Findings

The proposed solution in this paper confirmed that it is possible to reduce the severity of breakdowns in the CM system and improve the availability of the cells through an intercellular transfer created at the time of a breakdown. Simulation allowed a validation of the analytical model and showed the contribution of the suggested solution.

Originality/value

The developed approach studies the performance of the production cells formed by unreliable machines. It uses the notion of the intercellular transfer to improve the availability of the cells.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate, from a thorough review of the literature, the role of metaverse-based quality 4.0 (MV-based Q4.0) in achieving manufacturing resilience (MFGRES). Based on a categorization of MV-based Q4.0 enabler technologies and MFGRES antecedents, the paper provides a conceptual framework depicting the relationship between both areas while exploring existing knowledge in current literature.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper is structured as a comprehensive systematic literature review (SLR) at the intersection of MV-based Q4.0 and MFGRES fields. From the Scopus database up to 2023, a final sample of 182 papers is selected based on the inclusion/exclusion criteria that shape the knowledge base of the research.

Findings

In light of the classification of reviewed papers, the findings show that artificial intelligence is especially well-suited to enhancing MFGRES. Transparency and flexibility are the resilience enablers that gain most from the implementation of MV-based Q4.0. Through analysis and synthesis of the literature, the study reveals the lack of an integrated approach combining both MV-based Q4.0 and MFGRES. This is particularly clear during disruptions.

Practical implications

This study has a significant impact on managers and businesses. It also advances knowledge of the importance of MV-based Q4.0 in achieving MFGRES and gaining its full rewards.

Originality/value

This paper makes significant recommendations for academics, particularly those who are interested in the metaverse concept within MFGRES. The study also helps managers by illuminating a key area to concentrate on for the improvement of MFGRES within their organizations. In light of this, future research directions are suggested.

Abstract

Purpose

Aims to examine the four different management accounting systems or sets that existed at the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) during the 1670‐2005 period with Burns and Scapens' institution‐based framework of management accounting change.

Design/methodology/approach

A case study was used with comprehensive archival evidence coming mainly from the Hudson's Bay Company Archives (HBCA) and the HBC's private archive for 1670‐1970 and from interviews with retired and existing senior managers at the HBC for 1970‐2005.

Findings

The findings indicated that Burns and Scapens' framework was helpful. Institutions did prevent management accounting changes, even when seriously needed. Under certain conditions, institutions do not resist management accounting changes. Six suggestions are provided for extending and refining Burns and Scapens framework.

Research limitations/implications

Although the 325 years of evidence was uniquely rich, it was still a case study of a single firm.

Practical implications

Management accounting is slow to change because of institutions.

Originality/value

Management accounting change is very much path‐dependent. Changes occur in management accounting because of major external changes such as competition and modernization. Also, management accounting changes come from the introduction of taken‐for‐granted external techniques such as budgeting, capital budgeting, and planning.
