Abstract

Purpose

Limitations in traditional manufacturing methods currently employed in the production of acoustic devices, restricts the development of design led performance improvements. These devices are used to control sound energy and are commonly employed for tailoring room acoustics. solid freeform fabrication allows the production of acoustic structures more complex than traditionally manufactured devices. This paper aims to focus on a novel absorber based on destructive interference, considering performance, design and manufacture.

Design/methodology/approach

Selective laser sintering has been used in the investigation of the performance and manufacturing possibilities and limitations of a novel destructive interference absorber. Validation of the absorber performance is benchmarked against a conventional resonant absorber and compared to published results. The implications for acoustic devise design, the advances and limitations in manufacture using solid freeform fabrication techniques and potential applications are discussed.

Findings

An original absorber design has been shown to exhibit comparable acoustic absorption to that of a traditional solution. The nature of the geometry of the novel absorber demonstrates that the design flexibility afforded by solid freeform fabrication processes holds potential for applications incorporating new types of acoustic absorber. The use of solid freeform fabrication has demonstrated its potential to the application of acoustics, and has highlighted limitations due to post‐processing, material strength and the precision of the selectivity process.

Practical implications

Solid freeform fabrication techniques enable a new family of specifically engineered acoustic absorbers capable of incorporating performance benefits over conventional absorbers.

Originality/value

This paper focuses on room acoustic applications, the creation of high performance, conformal absorbers, applicable to a wide range of applications within the aerospace, automotive and construction industries, where space, weight and performance are key criteria.

Abstract

Purpose

Acoustic signals of the underwater targets are susceptible to noise, reverberation, submarine topography and biology, therefore it is difficult to precisely locate underwater targets. This paper proposes a new underwater Hanbury Brown-Twiss (HBT) interference passive localization method. This study aims to achieve precise location of the underwater acoustic targets.

Design/methodology/approach

The principle of HBT interference with ultrasensitive detection characteristics in optical measurements was introduced in the field of hydroacoustics. The coherence of the underwater target signal was analyzed using the HBT interference measurement principle, and the corresponding relationship between the signal coherence and target position was obtained. Consequently, an HBT interference localization model was established, and its validity was verified through simulations and experiments.

Findings

The effects of different array structures on the localization performance were obtained by simulation analysis, and the simulations confirmed that the HBT method exhibited a higher positioning accuracy than conventional beamforming. In addition, the experimental analysis demonstrated the excellent positioning performance of the HBT method, which verified the feasibility of the proposed method.

Originality/value

This study provides a new method for the passive localization of underwater targets, which may be widely used in the field of oceanic explorations.

Abstract

Purpose

Low back disorders are more predominant among construction trade workers than their counterparts in other industry sectors. Floor layers are among the top artisans that are severely affected by low back disorders. Exoskeletons are increasingly being perceived as ergonomic solutions. This study aims to compare the efficacy of passive and active back-support exoskeletons by measuring range of motion, perceived discomfort, usability, perceived rate of exertion and cognitive load during a simulated flooring task experiment.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study eight participants were engaged in a repetitive timber flooring task performed with passive and active back-support exoskeletons. Subjective and objective data were collected to assess the risks associated with using both exoskeletons. Descriptive statistics were used for analysis. Scheirer-Ray-Hare test and Wilcoxon signed-rank test were adopted to compare the exoskeleton conditions.

Findings

The results show no significant differences in the range of motion (except for a lifting cycle), perceived level of discomfort and perceived level of exertion between the two exoskeletons. Significant difference in overall cognitive load was observed. The usability results show that the active back-support exoskeleton made task execution easier with less restriction on movement.

Research limitations/implications

The flooring task is simulated in a laboratory environment with only eight male participants.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the scarce body of knowledge on the usage comparison of passive and active exoskeletons for construction work.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to research the corrosion behavior of the metal under the disbonded coatings interfered with AC through electrochemical method.

Design/methodology/approach

The corrosion behavior of the metal under disbond coating interfered with alternate stray current (AC) was studied by electrochemical methods using the rectangular coating disbonded simulator. The obtained data from electrode potential test, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and polarization curves in simulated soil solution indicated that under the natural corrosion condition, the self-corrosion potential and the corrosion current density of the metal at different depths under disbond coating had obviously changed if there was AC interference.

Findings

The self-corrosion potential of the metal at the same depths under disbond coating shifted negatively with the rising of the AC voltage. Under the condition of cathode polarization, there was still obvious potential gradient with the extension of the deep peeling of the coating gap, and the corrosion current density of the test points was minimum, and the protection effect was best when the cathode protection potential was −1.0 V. When the metal was applied with over-protection, the corrosion rate of the metal increased as AC stray current flowing through it increased.

Originality/value

This paper used the rectangular aperture device to study the corrosion behavior of X80 steel under the disbonded coatings through electrochemical methods when the AC stray current interference voltage was 0V, 1V, 5V or 10V and the protection potential was 0V, −0.9V, −1.0V, −1.2V or −1.3V, respectively. There is great significance to the safe operation and long-term service of pipeline steel in soil environment.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to propose a method for accurate radar echo simulation of wind turbines (WTs) array. It can solve the problem of passive interference from wind farms to neighboring radar stations.

Design/methodology/approach

First of all, the equivalent model of scattering centers of a single WT is obtained by using the spatial spectrum estimation method, and the accuracy of this model is verified by the scaled model experiment; then scattering centers model of WTs array was established by using the spatial coordinate transformation method. According to the position relationship between the model and the radar, and combined with the multipath scattering theory, the radar echo equation of WTs array was deduced. Finally, the simulation analysis is carried out with the four GoldWind 77/1500 WTs as an example and compared with the traditional methods.

Findings

This paper verifies the accuracy of the equivalent model of scattering centers through the WT scaled model experiment, and through simulation analysis, it is found that the result of this method is more consistent with the multipath scattering of radar echo between WTs array in practical engineering than the traditional method.

Originality/value

Based on the theory of high-frequency scattering, this paper introduces scattering centers into the solution of radar echo and considers the multipath scattering of radar echo, then a method for solving the radar echo of WTs array based on scattering centers is proposed.

Abstract

Purpose

Active touch experienced by the hand and mouth can influence the evaluation of the taste of food. The purpose of this paper is to examine the effect of a passive body touch experience on the perceived intensity of spiciness.

Design/methodology/approach

This study includes three experiments. In Experiment 1, 32 college students tasted half of one piece of spicy bean curd while sitting on either a hard wooden chair or a soft padded chair. Experiment 2 was conducted using the blindfold method to avoid the influence of visual cues on taste, keeping the other details the same as in Experiment 1. Experiment 3 was performed with two changes from Experiment 2: the participants were blindfolded immediately before entering the lab from the waiting room to completely block all visual cues for the experimental materials, and armless stools were used to eliminate the passive touch on the participants’ backs.

Findings

All three experiments consistently found that the participants sitting on the soft padded chair or the soft armless stool perceived the spicy bean curd as significantly spicier than those sitting on the hard wooden chair or the hard armless stool.

Originality/value

These results preliminarily support the hypothesis that a crossmodal correspondence exists between passive body touch and sense of taste (especially spiciness, as in this study), demonstrating the importance of passive body touch and, more generally, of the touchable features in places where food is consumed, such as hotels, restaurants and bars.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to study turbulent dispersion of a passive plume emitting from a single elevated line source of different elevations in a plane channel flow by using direct numerical simulation (DNS).

Design/methodology/approach

The investigation was conducted in both physical and spectral spaces, which includes an analysis of statistical moments and pre-multiplied spectra of the velocity and concentration fields. The pre-multiplied power spectra of the velocity and concentration fields are compared to identify the transition of the plume development from the turbulent convective stage to the turbulent diffusive stage.

Findings

It is observed that due to the presence of wall shear, the mean plume drifts toward the wall for the near-wall source release case. It is also observed that streamwise development of the plume is sensitive to both the source elevation and the downstream distance from the source. For the line source placed near the center of the channel, the plume development is dominated by the bulk meandering effects. However, for the plume emitting from the near-wall line source, it hits the ground soon after its release and becomes dominated by the wall shear. As the downstream distance from the line source increases, the streamwise development of the plume released from the near-wall line source transitions from a turbulent convective stage to a turbulent diffusive stage.

Originality/value

This paper represents an original DNS study of turbulent mixing and dispersion of a passive plume emitting from a line source of different elevations in a wall-bounded flow. This paper proposes a practical method to identify the transition of the plume development from the turbulent convective to the turbulent diffusive stages.

The purpose of this paper is to deal with the design of passive filter for power electronics voltage inverters used in aircraft electrical drives (a permanent magnet synchronous machine fed by a six-phase voltage inverter with PMW control), using optimization for both sizing and sensibility analyses.

The approach is generic. An aid allows to modify easily the frequency model and so to check various study cases, and to carry out the filter optimization for different topologies or control strategies.

The problem has numerous constraints on the components, mainly technological constraints. The volume is minimized, respecting electromagnetic standards and an electro magnetic interference filter prototype has been made.

Originality/value

The frequency model is automatically generated. A complex aircraft application has been studied thanks to the approach. Several sensibility analyses have been carried out. An EMC filter has been sized and an experimental prototype has been made, comforting the sizing by optimization.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper attempts to connect the literature on conflict and that of emotions. The argument presented is that emotions have until recently been understudied in conflict literature and vice versa. On the basis of the review of literature on both conflict and emotions, the paper points to new areas of exploration for researchers in both domains.

Design/methodology/approach

A literature review of two separate sub‐fields of study, namely conflict and emotions is provided with the intent of pointing towards gaps in connecting the two streams of research and towards a more holistic understanding of the role of emotions in conflict.

Findings

It is observed that the link between emotions and conflict has received little attention both in the literature on conflict and that of emotions. Insights into the role of emotions at the time of conflict and towards its subsequent resolution are provided. Future directions for study and potential linkages between the two streams are offered.

Originality/value

Connects two different streams of research and offers potential areas of exploration.
