Pascall has introduced new surface mount versions of its MIL‐STD‐1553 bus transformers, widely used in through‐hole mounted form throughout the aeronautical industry in ‘fly‐by‐wire’ implementations.

Japan Airlines has ordered up to 68 Pratt & Whitney PW4000 propulsion systems to power its new fleet of McDonnell Douglas MD‐11 aircraft. The value of the engine order is nearly $700 million.

Mr. Derek Kingsbury, 55, has been appointed group chief executive of Fairey Holdings with effect from April 5 and chairman of the group subsidiaries, Fairey Automation, Fairey Engineering, Fairey Hydraulics, Fairey Marine, Fairey Nuclear, Faircy Winches and the Fairey Filtration Division. He is joining the Fairey group from the Dowty Group which he joined in 1976 as a director and deputy chief executive.

The journal ETA (Elektrowärme im technischen Ausbau) is commonly referenced by COMPENDEX, INSPEC and PASCAL. A number of annual volumes of this journal (1974–1977) were examined for papers concerning the subject ‘The application of heat pumps for the heating of houses’. Twenty‐five such articles were found. Whether or not these papers had been included in the three bibliographies was determined. Successively examined were (1) the number of the selected articles, (2) the quality of the abstracts, and (3) the suitability, precision and efficiency of the total of allocated subject index terms: classification codes, controlled and uncontrolled terms, and title words. It appears that the selection of papers is quite different for each of the three databases and that the abstracts and allocated subject index terms as well as the title words often do not reproduce the subject of the original paper. The subject index terms which were relevant to the chosen subject were selected. With these selected index terms, five different searches were carried out in each of the databases with the help of the computer, via ESA/IRS; in addition to this a manual search was done via the printed editions. Recall, precision and overlap seemed to be dependent on the chosen search strategy. All these are shown in tables and Venn diagrams.

PASCAL is the machine readable version of the well known French abstract journal Bulletin Signalètique. This article describes the primary sources, the file structure and all the data elements of a record. It reviews the inverted fields and the way to search them with the QUEST Software of ESA/IRS (European Space Agency/Information Retrieval System) and outlines the software possibilities (truncation, masks, conceptual logic, online ordering of original documents, etc…). Several examples of searches are given.

After a short description of the primary sources, the coverage, the file structure and the data elements of a PASCAL record, this article reviews how to search the database with MISTRAL software on QUESTEL, the French national host. It outlines with the help of simple search examples the software possibilities (truncation, mask, text searches …) and the loading parameters of the file (searchable fields, output formats …)

REX, Thompson & Partners, the Farnham‐based computer and engineering consultancy, have announced the full release of an important addition to their sophisticated software verification and testing package, MALPAS. This latest enhancement is an automatic translator to enable programs in the widely‐used Pascal computer language to be analysed more easily.
