Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to report a numerical solution for the problem of steady, two dimensional boundary layer buoyant flow on a vertical magnetized surface, when both the viscosity and thermal conductivity are assumed to be temperature-dependent. In this case, the motion is governed by a coupled set of three nonlinear partial differential equations, which are solved numerically by using the finite difference method (FDM) by introducing the primitive variable formulation. Calculations of the coupled equations are performed to investigate the effects of the different governing parameters on the profiles of velocity, temperature and the transverse component of magnetic field. The effects of the thermal conductivity variation parameter, viscosity variation parameter, magnetic Prandtl number Pmr, magnetic force parameter S, mixed convection parameter Ri and the Prandtl number Pr on the flow structure and heat transfer characteristics are also examined.

Design/methodology/approach

FDM.

Findings

It is noted that when the Prandtl number Pr is sufficiently large, i.e. Pr=100, the buoyancy force that driven the fluid motion is decreased that decrease the momentum boundary layer and there is no change in thermal boundary layer is noticed. It is also noted that due to slow motion of the fluid the magnetic current generates which increase the magnetic boundary layer thickness at the surface. It is observed that the momentum boundary layer thickness is increased, thermal and magnetic field boundary layers are decreased with the increase of thermal conductivity variation parameter =100. The maximum boundary layer thickness is increased for =100 and there is no change seen in the case of thermal boundary layer thickness but magnetic field boundary layer is deceased. The momentum boundary layer thickness shoot quickly for =40 but is very smooth for =50.There is no change is seen for the case of thermal boundary layer and very clear decay for =40 is noted.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present a detailed analysis to explore the various properties of non-Newtonian couple stress lubricants between parallel porous plates.

Design/methodology/approach

With reference to the theories based on micro-continuum analysis, a non-linear, non-Newtonian Reynolds type equation is arrived. The closed form solutions obtained clearly indicate the changes in pressure, load bearing capacity and response time because of variation in viscosity of couple stress fluid.

Findings

It is observed that the viscosity variation factor greatly influences the change in pressure, load carrying capacity and squeezing time.

Originality/value

It is observed that the nature of lubricants with suitable additives greatly helps in overcoming the adverse effect because of porous surface. Reynolds type equation is analysed using appropriate boundary conditions. The expression for pressure distribution arrived at in turn leads to the analysis of load bearing capacity and response time.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to quantify the impact of the variation of microstructural features on macroscopic and microscopic fields. The application of multi-scale methods in the context of constitutive modeling of microheterogeneous materials requires the choice of a representative volume element (RVE) of the considered microstructure, which may be based on some idealized assumptions and/or on experimental observations. In any case, a realistic microstructure within the RVE is either computationally too expensive or not fully accessible by experimental measurement techniques, which introduces some uncertainty regarding the microstructural features.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, a systematical variation of microstructural parameters controlling the morphology of an RVE with an idealized microstructure is conducted and the impact on macroscopic quantities of interest as well as microstructural fields and their statistics is investigated. The study is carried out under macroscopically homogeneous deformation states using the direct micro-macro scale transition approach.

Findings

The variation of microstructural parameters, such as inclusion volume fraction, aspect ratio and orientation of the inclusion with respect to the overall loading, influences the macroscopic behavior, especially the micromechanical fields significantly.

Originality/value

The systematic assessment of the impact of microstructural parameters on both macroscopic quantities and statistics of the micromechanical fields allows for a quantitative comparison of different microstructure morphologies and a reliable identification of microstructural parameters that promote failure initialization in microheterogeneous materials.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of exponential viscosity-temperature relation, exponential thermal conductivity-temperature relation and the combined effects of variable viscosity and variable thermal conductivity on steady free convection flow of viscous incompressible fluid in a vertical channel.

Design/methodology/approach

The governing equations are solved analytically using regular perturbation method. The analytical solutions are valid for small variations of buoyancy parameter and the solutions are found up to first order for variable viscosity. Since the analytical solutions have a restriction on the values of perturbation parameter and also on the higher order solutions, the authors resort to numerical method which is Runge-Kutta fourth order method.

Findings

The skin friction coefficient and the Nusselt number at both the plates are derived, discussed and their numerical values for various values of physical parameters are presented in tables. It is found that an increase in the variable viscosity enhances the flow and heat transfer, whereas an increase in the variable thermal conductivity suppresses the flow and heat transfer for variable viscosity, variable thermal conductivity and their combined effect.

Originality/value

This research is relatively original as, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, not much work is done on the considered problem with variable properties.

Abstract

Purpose

The present study aims to demonstrate the performance assessment of flexible pavement structure in probabilistic framework with due consideration of spatial variability modeling of input parameter.

Design/methodology/approach

The analysis incorporates mechanistic–empirical approach in which numerical analysis with spatial variability modeling of input parameters, Monte Carlo simulations (MCS) and First Order Reliability Method (FORM) are combined together for the reliability analysis of the flexible pavement. Random field concept along with Cholesky decomposition technique is used for the spatial variability modeling of the input parameter and implemented in commercially available finite difference code FLAC for the numerical analysis of pavement structure.

Findings

Results of the reliability analysis, with spatial variability modeling of input parameter, are compared with the corresponding results obtained without considering spatial variability of parameters. Analyzing a particular three-layered flexible pavement structure, it is demonstrated that spatial variability modeling of input parameter provides more realistic treatment to property variations in space and influences the response of the pavement structure, as well as its performance assessment.

Originality/value

Research is based on reliability analysis approach, which can also be used in decision-making for quality control and flexible pavement design in a given environment of uncertainty and extent of spatially varying input parameters in a space.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to address the development and implementation of “AltPrint,” a slicing algorithm based on a new filling process planning from a variation in the deposited material geometry. AltPrint enables changes in the extruded material flow toward local variations in stiffness. The technical feasibility evaluation was conducted experimentally by fused filament fabrication (FFF) process of snap-fit subjected to a mechanical cyclical test.

Design/methodology/approach

The methodology is based on the estimation of the parameter E from the mathematical relationships among the variation of the material in the material flow, nozzle geometry and extrusion parameters. Calibration, validation and analysis of the printed specimens were divided into two moments, of which the first refers to the material responses (flexural and dynamic mechanical analysis) and the second involves the analysis of the printed components with localized flow properties (for estimating the response to cyclic loading). Finite element analysis assisted in the comparison of two snap-fit geometries, one traditional and one generated by AltPrint. Finally, three examples of compliant mechanisms were developed to demonstrate the potential of the algorithm in the generation of functional prototypes.

Findings

The contribution of AltPrint is the variable fill width integrated with the slicing software that varies the print parameters in different regions of the object. The alternative extrusion method based on material rate variation was conceived as an “open software” available in GitHub platform, hence, open manufacturing with initial focus on desktop 3D printer based on FFF. The slicing method provides deposited variable-width segments in an organized and replicable filling strategy, resulting in mechanical properties variations in specific regions of a part. It was implemented and evaluated experimentally and indicated potential applications in parts manufactured by the additive process based on extrusion, which requires local flexibilities.

Originality/value

This paper presents a new alternative method for application in an open additive manufacturing context, specifically for additive extrusion techniques that enable local variations in the material flow. Its potential for manufacturing functional parts, which require flexibility due to cyclic loading, was demonstrated by fabrication and experimental evaluations of parts made in acrylonitrile butadiene styrene filament. The changes proposed by AltPrint enable geometric modifications in the response of the printed parts. The proposed slicing and filling control of parameters is inserted in a context of design for additive manufacturing and shows great potential in the area of product design.

Abstract

Purpose

Given the importance of panel datasets in contemporary accounting and managerial finance research, the objective of this paper is to provide practical guidance for researchers who are inexperienced in dealing with panel estimation methodologies.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper presents and implements a set of procedures designed to establish whether or not pooled estimation is a viable proposition in a given setting. The paper also explores the suitability of alternative estimation methodologies given the results from these test procedures. To illustrate the key concepts the paper utilises a simple model of the relationship between UK directors' cash compensation and three explanatory variables: accounting earnings; stock returns; and firm growth. This model is used solely for illumination purposes and the paper does not seek to contribute to the compensation literature.

Findings

The results demonstrate the potentially misleading inference in panel settings, which can arise from: pooled OLS, where there is parameter heterogeneity; and firm‐specific OLS, when the impact of unobservable factors is likely to cause omitted variables difficulties.

Practical implications

The paper provides practical insights to researchers with respect to the appropriate ways of utilising the considerable benefits of panel estimation methodologies while simultaneously avoiding common errors.

Originality/value

This study presents guidance in a relatively non‐technical manner on an issue which has not received sufficient attention in the accounting and managerial finance literature to date, namely the procedures to follow in order to choose appropriate estimation methodologies when dealing with panel datasets.

Abstract

Purpose

The main purpose of this work was elaboration and verification of a method of assessing the sensitivity of automatic control laws to parametric uncertainty of an airplane’s mathematical model. The linear quadratic regulator (LQR) methodology was used as an example design procedure for the automatic control of an emergency manoeuvre. Such a manoeuvre is assumed to be pre-designed for the selected airplane.

Design/methodology/approach

The presented method of investigating the control systems’ sensitivity comprises two main phases. The first one consists in computation of the largest variations of gain factors, defined as differences between their nominal values (defined for the assumed model) and the values obtained for the assumed range of parametric uncertainty. The second phase focuses on investigating the impact of the variations of these factors on the behaviour of automatic control in the manoeuvre considered.

Findings

The results obtained allow for a robustness assessment of automatic control based on an LQR design. Similar procedures can be used to assess in automatic control arrived at through varying design methods (including methods other than LQR) used to control various manoeuvres in a wide range of flight conditions.

Practical implications

It is expected that the presented methodology will contribute to improvement of automatic flight control quality. Moreover, such methods should reduce the costs of the mathematical nonlinear model of an airplane through determining the necessary accuracy of the model identification process, needed for assuring the assumed control quality.

Originality/value

The presented method allows for the investigation of the impact of the parametric uncertainty of the airplane’s model on the variations of the gain-factors of an automatic flight control system. This also allows for the observation of the effects of such variations on the course of the selected manoeuvre or phase of flight. This might be a useful tool for the design of crucial elements of an automatic flight control system.

Bandwagon refers to the adoption of popular ideas, thoughts, or practices. Although the inter-organizational (macro) dynamics of the phenomenon have been widely studied, its intra-organizational (micro) aspects have received limited attention. The paper presents a theoretical framework and a model that address intra-organizational aspects of bandwagon drawing on distributed cognition, social relationships, and other elements of the organizational structure such as culture and defensive routines. The analysis of simulated data from the model suggests that the phenomenon is likely to decrease with highly informal culture, promotion of advice taking and giving, low levels of distrust, strong social ties, and minimal defensive routines.

Purpose

Process variation has become a major concern in the design of many nanometer circuits, including interconnect pipelines. The purpose of this paper is to provide a comprehensive overview of types and sources of all aspects of interconnect process variations.

Design/methodology/approach

The impacts of these interconnect process variations on circuit delay and cross‐talk noises along with the two major sources of delays – parametric delay variations and global interconnect delays – have been discussed.

Findings

Parametric delay evaluation under process variation method avoids multiple parasitic extractions and multiple delay evaluations as is done in the traditional response surface method. This results in significant speedup. Furthermore, both systematic and random process variations have been contemplated. The systematic variations need to be experimentally modeled and calibrated while the random variations are inherent fluctuations in process parameters due to any reason in manufacturing and hence are non‐deterministic.

Originality/value

This paper usefully reviews process variation effects on very large‐scale integration (VLSI) interconnect.
