Abstract

InfoMall is a program led by the Northeast Parallel Architectures Center featuring a partnership of approximately twenty‐four organizations with a plan for accelerating development of the High‐Performance Computing and Communications (HPCC) software and systems industry. HPCC is a critical technology where the United States has clear international leadership and which will have unprecedented impact on industry, education, society, and defense. The communications component of HPCC is critical to developing HPCC products. Acceptance of HPCC by these real‐world sectors has been delayed by the extremely hard problem of HPCC software development. InfoMall employs a novel technology development strategy involving closely linked programs in technology extraction and certification, software development, marketing, education, and training, economic development, and small business support. The process is constructured and explained by analogy to a full‐service set of stores in a shopping mall.

Abstract

Purpose

Automobile development needs more and more collaborative work involving geographical dispersed designers, that brings difficulty for model verification, conception review and assembly process evaluation, so a collaborative virtual environment for automobile based on network is required. In this kind of environment, designers can do interactive assembly operations collaboratively, such as grasp, move, release, collision detection (CD), assembly evaluation report generation, etc. Furthermore, automobile structure becomes more complicated, how to process this large real‐time data effectively in real‐time interactive virtual environment is a great challenge. The purpose of this paper is focus on this.

Design/methodology/approach

A distributed parallel virtual assembly environment (DPVAE) is developed. In this environment, the mechanism of event synchronization based on high‐level architecture/run‐time infrastructure) is applied to realize multi‐user collaboratively interactive operation. To meet the large data set real‐time processing demand, a creative parallel processing approach supported by a single supercomputer or a parallel processing environment composed of common personal computer in a high‐speed local area network is developed. The technologies such as real‐time CD, multiple interactive operation modals are applied in DPVAE and several auxiliary tools are provide to help achieving whole scheme review, component model verification and assembly evaluation.

Findings

This paper finds that DPVAE system is an available and efficient tool to support automobile collaborative assembly design.

Practical implications

Designers can discuss and verify the assembly scheme to realize the previous design scenario in DPVAE, so it is useful for reducing costs, improving quality and shortening the time to market, especially for new type automobile development.

Originality/value

A combination of distributed technology and parallel computing technology is applied in product virtual assembly, solving the problems including collaborative work of multi‐user and large data real‐time processing successfully, that provides a useful tool for automobile development.

Abstract

Purpose

To introduce an efficient methodology for the computation of the periodic steady state solution of power systems with nonlinear and time‐varying components which combines a Newton method based on a numerical differentiation procedure to obtain a fast steady state solution in the time domain and parallel process techniques.

Design/methodology/approach

Nonlinear electric systems are represented by a set of differential equations, the conventional solution in the time domain is accelerated by a Newton method based on a numerical differentiation procedure for the convergence of state variables to the limit cycle and thus to the network periodic steady state solution. The efficiency of the solution is further enhanced with the application of parallel processing technology based on parallel virtual machine (PVM) and multi‐threading (MT).

Findings

The periodic steady state solution of nonlinear electric systems, even of large‐scale, can be efficiently obtained in the time domain with the application of Newton methods for the fast converge of state variables to the limit cycle. The efficiency of the computer solution can be dramatically enhanced with the application of parallel processing technology. The potential of the PVM and MT platforms is shown in the investigation. A comparison of advantages and disadvantages associated with each parallel processing platforms is given; a quantitative comparison between PVM and MT is provided.

Practical implications

The steady state solution of nonlinear electric systems can be efficiently obtained with a combination of Newton methods for the convergence acceleration to the limit cycle and parallel processing techniques.

Originality/value

The steady state solution of nonlinear electric systems using a Newton method based on a numerical differentiation procedure for the convergence acceleration to the limit cycle and parallel processing based on the PVM and MT platforms has not, to the authors' knowledge, reported before.

Abstract

Parallel processing technology was applied to accelerate the calculation speed of the water quality forecasting model. The parallel algorithm proposed was based on the message-passing interface (MPI). It mainly aims at enhancing the computation speed of the water quality forecasting model of Jiaozhou Bay, and decomposes the material transport issue into many sub-duties. The model was run in a MPI message cluster system. The result indicates that, by using this method, the computation efficiency for solving material transportation module is increased by approximately more than 60%.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to document the approach, effort and cost of advance composite technology implementation suited for small and medium enterprises on the example of composite main rotor blade development for ILX-27 helicopter.

Design/methodology/approach

This work was carried out as part of a development project for main rotor blades used on the ILX 27 helicopter. The paper presents all stages of the design of the blade structure in parallel with composite technology development. The data were gathered and documented during project execution. The stages of R&D work in terms of labor intensity and important processes influencing quality and efficiency were assessed.

Findings

The paper provides key aspects for successful composite capability introduction. The incurred cost of equipment and staff training is evaluated. The paper also summarized the cost of composite parts manufactured with developed technology.

Practical implications

The paper provides detail example of composite capability development including basic technologies, processes, equipment and cost of the project. Presented details can be great guidelines for small and medium enterprises with the goal of composite technology introduction for aerostructures design and manufacturing.

Originality/value

This paper present clear, complete and verified process of composite capability development for aerostructures design and build suited for small and medium enterprises. It presents detail cost, calculated in Polish economy environment, of each phase and final cost of the product.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to develop frameworks to support implementation and competitive leveraging of distinct sustainable supply chain operations. This derives from conceptual definition of the dynamic capabilities required to support Hart’s (1995) natural-resource-based view resources in the supply chain.

Design/methodology/approach

This conceptual study uses qualitative content analysis to extract capabilities from review and analysis of literature related to natural-resource-based view (NRBV) and sustainable supply chain management. Intercoder reliability assessments support conceptual development of such capabilities into dynamic capability frameworks.

Findings

Specific interrelations between each NRBV resource and corresponding supply chain strategies are conceptualised. From this, capabilities are categorised to corresponding resources, dynamic capabilities activities and internal–external focus. This results in definition of 107 dynamic NRBV capabilities.

Research limitations/implications

Contributions are threefold: distinct frameworks for competitive sustainable supply chain management is offered; the NRBV benefits from enhanced practical guidance via the definition of its dynamic capabilities, addressing the theory-practice gap; and understandings of dynamic capabilities and their role in both the NRBV sustainable supply chain management is advanced.

Practical implications

This paper offers four frameworks to allow firms to tailor sustainability strategies to suit their needs and guide competitive leveraging. Definition of capabilities offers practical guidance to operationalise NRBV resources.

Originality/value

This is the first holistic interpretation of NRBV capabilities and explicit application of dynamic capabilities. This forms the basis of a broader research agenda for the NRBV in sustainable supply chain management.

Abstract

Purpose

Aims to research the possibilities of using piezoelectric technology to improve accuracy and other characteristics of parallel servo grippers.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper presents in detail two different kinds of developed two‐fingered servo grippers based on piezoelectric technology with parallel moving mechanics. The first gripper is based on standing wave ultrasonic motors. The other gripper is a traditional gripper, the characteristics of which have been improved with integrated piezoelectric stack actuators. Both servo grippers have been tested and the test results and experiences are introduced in the paper.

Findings

It is possible to improve the accuracy and characteristics of a parallel servo gripper with piezoelectric technology.

Research limitations/implications

In the future it is necessary to concentrate on the mechanical design of gripper bodies and the fingers. Grasping force feedback signal should be even more linear and noiseless.

Practical implications

Piezoelectric stack actuator's limited displacement is a problem in many practical applications when elastic or rough surface parts are handled. When integrated piezoelectric stacks are used with servo grippers, it is very important to focus on gripper's mechanical design and especially on the mechanical rigidity for getting the best possible results.

Originality/value

Further developed versions of these servo grippers can be used in high accuracy industry applications instead of traditional servo gripper technologies.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper seeks to establish parallel robots with strong performance characteristics in handling and assembly processes.

Design/methodology/approach

The presented work introduces concepts and solutions related to the improvement of parallel kinematic mechanisms. Structural design topics and modeling approaches are as well considered as control schemes and new machine components particularly designed for high‐dynamic parallel robots. The results have been achieved by a unique interdisciplinary research group linking knowledge from mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and computer science.

Findings

The paper found numerous individually applicable methods leading to an improved efficiency of parallel robots. Several of the developments have been already implemented and validated by various self‐built machine prototypes and a new control system.

Originality/value

Owing to higher stiffness, accuracy and improved dynamic behavior parallel robots proved to be an efficient and suitable supplement to serial robots. By means of the various developments contributed in this paper, the promising potential of this class of robots is once more emphasized and further strengthened.

Abstract

Purpose

This work can be used as a building block in other settings such as GPU, Map-Reduce, Spark or any other. Also, DDPML can be deployed on other distributed systems such as P2P networks, clusters, clouds computing or other technologies.

Design/methodology/approach

In the age of Big Data, all companies want to benefit from large amounts of data. These data can help them understand their internal and external environment and anticipate associated phenomena, as the data turn into knowledge that can be used for prediction later. Thus, this knowledge becomes a great asset in companies' hands. This is precisely the objective of data mining. But with the production of a large amount of data and knowledge at a faster pace, the authors are now talking about Big Data mining. For this reason, the authors’ proposed works mainly aim at solving the problem of volume, veracity, validity and velocity when classifying Big Data using distributed and parallel processing techniques. So, the problem that the authors are raising in this work is how the authors can make machine learning algorithms work in a distributed and parallel way at the same time without losing the accuracy of classification results. To solve this problem, the authors propose a system called Dynamic Distributed and Parallel Machine Learning (DDPML) algorithms. To build it, the authors divided their work into two parts. In the first, the authors propose a distributed architecture that is controlled by Map-Reduce algorithm which in turn depends on random sampling technique. So, the distributed architecture that the authors designed is specially directed to handle big data processing that operates in a coherent and efficient manner with the sampling strategy proposed in this work. This architecture also helps the authors to actually verify the classification results obtained using the representative learning base (RLB). In the second part, the authors have extracted the representative learning base by sampling at two levels using the stratified random sampling method. This sampling method is also applied to extract the shared learning base (SLB) and the partial learning base for the first level (PLBL1) and the partial learning base for the second level (PLBL2). The experimental results show the efficiency of our solution that the authors provided without significant loss of the classification results. Thus, in practical terms, the system DDPML is generally dedicated to big data mining processing, and works effectively in distributed systems with a simple structure, such as client-server networks.

Findings

The authors got very satisfactory classification results.

Originality/value

DDPML system is specially designed to smoothly handle big data mining classification.

Purpose

The challenge of unforeseen uncertainties in exploratory projects requires the lead firm in a project alliance to effectively manage exploratory co-innovation. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the types of capabilities a lead firm required in exploratory projects and how these capabilities enable the exploratory innovation of the project alliance.

Design/methodology/approach

A multiple-case study was done to provide empirical evidence for the rationale of the capabilities of the lead firm. The provided analysis used abductive reasoning of two typical exploratory projects in China.

Findings

This paper identifies two types of capabilities: innovation-related capabilities and network-related capabilities. Furthermore, a process model of the capabilities of the lead firm is developed that enables exploratory co-innovation in a project alliance. The capabilities of the lead firm input varied at four different stages.

Practical implications

Innovation-related capabilities and network-related capabilities could form the foundation for the lead firm in an exploratory project alliance. This will enable an exploratory co-innovation and collaboratively overcome the barriers of exploratory projects.

Originality/value

Although exploratory project attracts extensive attention for its unique characteristics and universal value, there is limited amount of research on the context of joint exploratory projects. This study starts from the role of lead firm in an exploratory project alliance, contributes toward the comprehension of the link between the lead firm’s capabilities and the process of exploratory co-innovation. The findings will be of value in supporting the management of exploratory innovation in a project alliance.
