Abstract

Purpose

There is growing evidence that learning is faster, measurably better and more productive in a classroom setting when a student attends classes regularly. Each student brings in his/her experience, skills, and unique learning styles to a class – thus a classroom environment can potentially create positive externalities through which a student can gain substantially from various strengths of his/her peers. However, students do remain absent from their classes for a variety of reasons. One of the measurable effects of regular non-attendance in a university class, where students from various cultures and regions interact, is the academic performance. The purpose of this paper is to determine if there is any potential causal link between absenteeism (attendance) and academic performance.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were culled from the records of three batches of students in a British university campus in the Middle East. Quantile regression methods were used to establish the causal relationship between absenteeism and academic performance.

Findings

A quantile regression analysis reveals that absenteeism has negative impact on academic performance. This also suggests that low performers are worse affected by absenteeism as compared to the high performers.

Research limitations/implications

Inclusion of some other factors, such as study habits, additional hours spent on quantitative modules, student’s ethnicity background, particularly in the context of United Arab Emirates, could have emboldened the robustness of the study. Non-availability or paucity of this information, to some degree, has limited the conclusions of this study.

Originality/value

Proponents of mandatory attendance argue that there is a positive correlation between attendance and performance. But, one very important issue which gets overlooked is who actually benefits more by attending classes – are the shirkers who have a poor attendance record or the ones who are more sincere, more regular, and active participants in a class? This study uses quantile regression analysis to address this issue.

Abstract

Background: Human resource management (HRM) is the tactical method for a business enterprise’s optimistic and systemic administration. This study aims to identify the common and major triggering attributes and the knowledge gap between HRM and an organisation’s employee attrition rate.

Method: The employee Attrition Case Study Dataset used is an anecdotal data set that tries to figure out relevant variables that determine employee behavioural aspects towards attrition. This study investigates why attrition occurs, the major triggering attributes for employee turnover, and how it might be anticipated to employ artificial intelligence (AI) to avert corporate losses.

Results: Employees’ monthly income, age, average monthly hours, distance from home, total working years, years at the company, per cent of salary hike, number of companies worked, stock options level, job role and other factors are taken into consideration. A feature importance extraction framework was devised to investigate the various dormant factors. The findings also show feasible hypotheses that help enhance employee engagement, reinvent the worker dynamic, and higher levels of risk decrease attrition rate.

Implications: Employees’ monthly income, age, average monthly hours, distance from home, etc., are all major variables in employee attrition in the Indian IT business. This research adds to the theory development of behavioural elements in people analytics based on AI.

Purpose: Can we predict employee attrition through employee behavioural patterns advancement using AI tools.

Abstract

Purpose

Urethane Acrylate Oligomer with 100% solids was synthesised and characterised in order to study the application in electron beam curing with varying ratio of Trimethylol propane triacrylate (TMPTA). The purpose of this paper is to study effect of TMPTA addition on the crosslink density and different coating properties.

Design/methodology/approach

Polyester polyol was synthesised by reacting single diacid, adipic acid (AA), with Pentaerythritol (PENTA) and 1,6‐hexanediol (HD). Further, Urethane acrylate resin was synthesised by using Isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), hydroxy ethyl acrylate (HEA) and Polyester polyol. The polyester polyol and urethane acrylate oligomer were characterised by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, FTIR and GPC. Further, TMPTA was added as a crosslinker to the urethane acrylate oligomer and cured by electron beam radiation. The cured UA films having varying concentration of TMPTA were employed to evaluate thermal property, contact angle analysis, mechanical and chemical properties.

Findings

The obtained results showed improvement in their chemical properties, mechanical properties, thermal properties and water contact angle at 20% of TMPTA iconcentration. The TMPTA also reduced the dose required for the curing.

Research limitations/implications

The resin can be synthesised from different isocyanates as TDI, MDI and HMDI, etc. The study can also be done with different multi or mono functional monomers such as methacrylate, hexanediol diacrylate, ethylene glycol diacrylate, etc.

Practical implications

The paper provides the better solution to reduce the cost of the electron beam radiation required for the curing.

Social implications

The method presented in the paper could be very useful for controlling environmental pollution; as the conventional method of curing releases volatile organic compounds (VOC).

Originality/value

In this paper, urethane acrylate and TMTPA cured with electron beam are shown to offer good coating properties. A high‐solid urethane acrylate coating would find numerous industrial applications in surface coatings.
