Abstract

Enumerates the origins and early development of outdoor advertising in the USA, stating that in early times (pre‐newspapers) most signs or symbols over shops, or handbills, were copied from the UK. Goes on to identify the areas and years that newspapers began to appear and make an impression, and gives breakdowns of how and where they started and grew to become formidable forces in the media‐starved years back then. Furthers the point that outdoor advertising in the USA evolved at a similar, but much slower, pace than in the UK. Posits that large circuses had an impact with regard to outdoor advertising and in particular Phineas Taylor Barnum, who was the first to use large illustrated posters for effect, and this soon caught on.

Abstract

About 30 years have passed since the initial work in the field of polyurethane compounds was begun. This work has resulted in a wide choice of materials for use in surface coatings. The commercial development of aliphatic urethane prepolymers during the past few years has made possible the formulation of exterior coatings with good weathering properties.

Abstract

The construction of ships in pre‐fabricated sections — or blocks as they are frequently termed — has made it necessary to develop new and faster techniques for treating the fabricated sections before they are painted. Vacu‐Blast Ltd., a member of the Allied Polymer Group, has been studying the problem for some time and the first major order for a completely new style blasting and grit recovery system, has just been won against strong international competition, from Wits Amsterdam B.V. This well‐known paint contracting company — a subsidiary of Wits United — is installing the Vacu‐Blast system in two specially designed blasting halls provided by the Netherland Dock and Shipbuilding Company of Amsterdam (NDSM) for whom Wits have acted as contract coating specialists for 65 years.

Abstract

The name Bentley is forever linked with the La Mans 24 heures Grand Prix d'Endurance. During a brief but glorious foray into racing, the marque scored five victories between 1924 and 1930, including a 1–2–3–4 walkover in '29 and created contemporary legends of its drivers, the ‘Bentley Boys’. In 1931, financial pressures forced the works team to withdraw from the racing scene, ending an illustrious era; the firm itself was acquired by Rolls Royce, who retained the name but discontinued the cars.

Abstract

Although not new in the strictest sense of the word, mention must be made of airless spraying because of the rapidly increasing interest now being shown in this process. This is due to the fact that it is proving to be one of the quickest and most economical methods of applying paint over large areas yet devised. Indeed, the limiting factor in the speed of application is most often the speed at which the operator can work: at its maximum, even the smallest airless unit will deliver well over a quart of paint a minute!
