Reducing Level of Alcohol in Inks ‐ A medium‐sized US ink manufacturer recently needed to reduce the level of alcohol in its bases for water‐based inks. Ciba Geigy Pigments Division's Inks Technical Centre developed an improved formulation, containing half the alcohol of the previous one and 40 per cent more pigment to allow the ink producer to meet VOC limits and increase production efficiency, at no additional cost.

The purpose of the present study is first to develop a hydroxyl-functionalized ketonic resin for coating applications and to establish a standard characterization protocol; second, to quantify the effects of various operating parameters on resin properties and to develop mathematical models to predict the product properties; and third, to carry out the compatibility study between the in-house developed resins and commercially available resins.

Self-polymerization reactions were conducted in a batch reactor. Effects of reaction time, temperature, catalyst concentration and reactor pressure on product properties have been studied. Hydroxyl value, iodine value, solubility, rheology, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and the X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis were carried out to characterize the product properties. Mark–Houwink correlation was used to predict molecular weight of the resins.

The study shows that hydroxyl value and softening temperature (ST) of the product increased with the increase of reaction temperature, duration of reaction and alkali concentration. However, the solubility value of the resins decreased with the increase of temperature, time and alkali concentration. Regression models were developed to predict the optimum conditions for obtaining a desired quality of resin. The number-average molecular weight of the developed resins was in the range of 450-1150. The products are thermally stable up to around 200°C, and adequately soluble in many commercial solvents.

DuPont has announced a new TiO2 R‐104 titanium pigment specially designed to provide outstanding optical and Theological performance at higher loadings in masterbatch formulations. With the new product, polyolefin masterbatch producers can, it is stated, achieve much higher ratios of R‐104 to resin; film producers can operate with greater efficiency at higher temperatures because of the low volatility of the product.

The Cobo Hall, Detroit, Michigan, USA was the venue for the 59th Annual Meeting, Federation of Societies for Coatings Technology and the 46th Paint Industries Show which took place on October 28th‐30th, 1981. There were no fewer than 179 exhibitors, almost entirely from the USA. The large crowds on the first day indicated the popularity of the show. The only criticisms that could be made were the lack of seating accommodation for footsore visitors, and the poor quality of the cafeteria at Cobo Hall, bearing in mind that the stands (Booths in the local dialect) occupied 38,210 sq. ft. A novelty to visitors is that across the river is a different country, Canada, and Windsor, Ontario, the “frontier” town on the Canadian side, was used as a hotel base for many participants.
