Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to assess dynamics of the knowledge economy (KE)–finance nexus using the four variables identified under the World Bank’s (WB’s) Knowledge Economy Index (KEI) and seven financial intermediary dynamics of depth, efficiency, activity and size.

Design/methodology/approach

Principal component analysis is used to reduce the dimensions of KE components before dynamic panel generalized method of moments (GMM) estimation techniques are employed to examine the nexus.

Findings

Four main findings are established. First, education improves financial depth and financial efficiency but mitigates financial size. Second, apart from a thin exception (trade’s incidence on money supply), economic incentives (credit facilities and trade) are not consistently favorable to financial development. Third, information and communications technology improves only financial size and has a negative effect on other financial dynamics. Finally, proxies for innovation (journals and foreign direct investment [FDI]) have a positive effect on financial activity; journals (FDI) have (has) a negative (positive) effect on liquid liabilities, and journals and FDI both have negative incidences on money supply and banking system efficiency, respectively.

Practical implications

As a policy implication, the KE–finance nexus is a complex and multidimensional relationship. Hence, blind and blanket policy formulation to achieve positive linkages may not be successful unless policy-making strategy is contingent on the prevailing “KE-specific component” trends and dynamics of financial development. Policy makers should improve the economic incentive dimension of KE that, overwhelmingly and consistently, deters financial development, owing to surplus liquidity issues.

Originality/value

As far as we have reviewed, this is the first paper to examine the KE–finance nexus with the plethora of KE dimensions defined by the WB’s KEI and all the dynamics identified by the Financial Development and Structure Database.

Like many industrial nations over the last four decades, the Japanese economy has undergone a number of regime shifts, making parameter estimations difficult. One of the most significant shifts occurred in inflation in the mid 1970s as OPEC suddenly raised oil prices. This abrupt change likely caused consumers' expectations of future inflation to deviate significantly from realized (ex‐post) inflation. Using a Markov chain model, inflation forecasts that take into consideration changing regimes are employed to derive a unique set of real stationary variables that are likely to better represent consumers' expectations and are an alternative to the standard approach of adjusting nominal variables with ex‐post inflation. We employ these real variables in the consumption‐based capital asset pricing model (CCAPM). Estimates of the representative investor's coefficient of relative risk aversion (CRRA) are derived within the framework typically used to examine the equity premium puzzle. Our tests confirm that the equity premium puzzle, if it exists in Japan, is not as significant as previously thought.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the need to incorporate the loan loss provisions (LLPs) and risk measures in order to examine the repercussions on advancing approach and profitability.

Design/methodology/approach

The study investigates the effect of explanatory variables on profitability and advancing approach of the banks. The variables used in this study were determined, based on the review of relevant literature and established according to the availability of data for measurement purposes. Inspired by previous research, Hausman test is used in this study to determine whether a random or fixed effects generalized least squares model is best. The linear regression model is applied to strongly balanced panel data obtained from the ten commercial banks.

Findings

The findings demonstrate that Nigerian banking sector considers LLPs in terms of its decision making of advancing approach, while proper inclusion of credit, market and operational risk is more important for South Africa’s banks rather than the maintenance of provisions.

Originality/value

Moreover, the credit risk proves to be more needed factor of consideration for Nigerian rather for South African banks. This is an answer to the strong economy of South Africa as compared to Nigeria and more chances of default faced by Nigerian banks.

Abstract

Purpose

The main aim of this paper is to provide an assessment of the intellectual impact of the work of Jaroslav Vanek in the related fields of participation and labor management (hereafter, PLM) and participation and employee ownership (hereafter, PEO).

Design/methodology/approach

This paper used mixed methods including bibliometric analysis.

Findings

Vanek's work, particularly the General Theory of Labor-Managed Market Economies, (Vanek, 1970) is the building block for the modern scientific study of cooperatives and for helping to establish the fields of PLM and PEO. Vanek (1970) continues to be the highest cited publication each year that investigates the pure case of a labor-managed firm. Arguably his work has played a significant role is setting the stage for the development of adjacent fields in economics such as the new institutional economics. For an economist, his work has had an unusually strong impact on work outside of economics.

Originality/value

No similar assessment has been undertaken before.

Abstract

Purpose

The literature argues that human activities are responsible for environmental pollution and world climate change. Africa is the second-largest continent by population and its socio-economic conditions are adversely affected by climate change due to environmental pollution. Therefore, this study investigates the relationship between human activities, the environment and the economic growth of 38 African countries from 2000 to 2018.

Design/methodology/approach

This study employs a simultaneous equations model called Seemingly unrelated regression.

Findings

Human capital development (HDI) and environmental health (EH) have a positive and non-linear relationship, while HDI and ecosystem vitality (EV) are negative and non-linear. The relationship between gross domestic product per capita (GDPPC) and EH is negative and non-linear. However, the GDPPC-EV link is insignificant. Trade openness (TO) and EV have a negative and non-linear relationship, but trade significantly improves EH. Urbanisation-EV relationship is positive and non-linear. However, urbanisation significantly reduces EH. Technology has a positive and non-linear relationship with EH and EV. The study also found that EH and EV positively affects the economy.

Originality/value

This is the first study to analyse the most concerned countries in-depth. Thus, it provides appropriate and sound policies that consider the unique characteristics of the nations. Moreover, it uses a robust estimation technique that overcomes the endogeneity problem and offers insight into the relationship between the variables, including the feedback effect of the environment on growth.

The concept of blown‐ups not only explains clearly the mystery of nonlinearity, but also suggests a change to our traditional way of thinking. Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to use eye-tracking technology to conduct an empirical study about online learning process analysis, thus aiming to understand the attentional preferences and learning paths in online learners.

Design/methodology/approach

With eye movement tracking and data analysing technology, the Tobii X120 eye-tracking instrument, Tobii studio and online learning platform are used to record and visualise data of eye moving and learning steps during the real task-based online learning processes of 14 online learners. According to Barbara A. Soloman’s learning style classification framework, these learners’ learning style was presented in four dimensions. Based on data of eye moving, leaning style and operation in online course, the correlation about learners’ preferences of learning content, online learning paths and learning style were analysed based on according data.

Findings

The paper provides empirical insights about how change is brought about during online learning. It is found that there is no significant difference in attention preference between the students with the difference on the learning style of visual-verbal, although each person has a different attention preference on the learning content.

Research limitations/implications

The limitation of this study is that only one common type of video learning process is studied. The learning process of various types of instructional videos in online learning will be done in future research.

Practical implications

In this study, eye-movement tracking technology is used to understand students’ learning path and learning preference in the online learning process, which is helpful to optimise the online learning process and improve the efficiency of online learning.

Social implications

This research findings have been approved by relevant experts and have won the first prize in the school-level competition of South China Normal University in China.

Originality/value

In this study, the technology of psychology (eye-tracking technology) is introduced into the study of real task-based online learning process in the subject of educational technology, realising the integration of multi-disciplinary research techniques and methods.

Abstract

This paper deals with research of patterns and structures in a sequence of data with a finite number of states. After preliminary estimates, two optimization criteria are presented, which based on a schema of referential probabilities enable the construction of a vocabulary of patterns, or basic morphological units. The determination of structures, which may link these patterns is subsequently discussed, first from a morphological viewpoint, then from a generative viewpoint. Morphological structures may be constructed from classical schema of Markov chains or from graph theory; the identification of generative structures is based on the definition of a set of normed transformations on the vocabulary, which leads to various numerical estimates.

Abstract

Although the existence of a close relationship between the areas of digital signal processing and time integration methodology is known, a systematic application of the concepts and methods of the first area to the second is missing. Such an approach is followed in this paper, arising from the fact that any time integration formula can be viewed as a digital filter of the applied excitation force, approximating as close as possible to the behaviour of a ‘prototype analogue filter’, which is in fact the semi discrete equations of motion of the system. This approach provides a universal framework for handling and analysing all various aspects of time integration formulae, such as analysis in the frequency domain, algebraic operations, accuracy and stability, aliasing, spurious oscillations generation, introduction of digital filters within the time integration formula, initial conditions handling and overshooting. Additionally it is shown that digital signal processing methods, such as pre‐ or post‐processing, time delays, etc. can be in certain cases a quite effective complement of the time integration scheme.
