Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to know the influence of heat generation/absorption and slip effects on heat and mass transfer flow of carbon nanotubes – water-based nanofluid over a rotating disk. Two types of carbon nanotubes, single and multi-walled, are considered in this analysis.

Design/methodology/approach

The non-dimensional system of governing equations is constructed using compatible transformations. These equations together with boundary conditions are solved numerically by using the most prominent Finite element method. The influence of various pertinent parameters such as magnetic parameter (0.4 – 1.0), nanoparticle volume fraction parameter (0.1 – 0.6), porosity parameter (0.3 – 0.6), radiation parameter (0.1 – 0.4), Prandtl number (2.2 – 11.2), space-dependent (−3.0 – 3.0), temperature-dependent (−3.0 – 1.5), velocity slip parameter (0.1 – 1.0), thermal slip parameter (0.1 – 0.4) and chemical reaction parameter (0.3 – 0.6) on nanofluids velocity, temperature and concentration distributions, as well as rates of velocity, temperature and concentration is calculated and the results are plotted through graphs and tables. Also, a comparative analysis is carried out to verify the validation of the present numerical code and found good agreement.

Findings

The results indicate that the temperature of the fluid elevates with rising values of nanoparticle volume fraction parameter. Furthermore, the rates of heat transfer rise from 4.8% to 14.6% when carbon nanotubes of 0.05 volume fraction are suspended into the base fluid.

Originality/value

The work carried out in this analysis is original and no part is copied from other sources.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to analyze the impact of chemical reaction and thermal radiation on mixed convection flow, heat and mass transfer characteristics of nanofluid through a wedge occupied with water–TiO2 and water–Al2O3 made nanofluid by considering velocity, temperature and concentration slip conditions in present investigation.

Design/methodology/approach

Using acceptable similarity transformations, the prevailing partial differential equations have been altered into non-linear ordinary differential equations and are demonstrated by the diverse thermophysical parameters. The mathematical model is solved numerically by implementing Galarkin finite element method and the outcomes are shown in tables and graphs.

Findings

The temperature and concentration fields impede as magnetic field parameter improves in both water–Al2O3 and water–TiO2 nanofluid. While there is contradiction in the velocity field as the values of magnetic field parameter rises in both nanofluids. The non-dimensional velocity rate, rate of temperature and rate of concentration rise with improved values of Weissenberg number.

Originality/value

Nanofluid flows past wedge-shaped geometries have gained much consideration because of their extensive range of applications in engineering and science, such as, magnetohydrodynamics, crude oil extraction, heat exchangers, aerodynamics and geothermal systems. Virtually, these types of nanofluid flows happen in ground water pollution, aerodynamics, retrieval of oil, packed bed reactors and geothermal industries.

Abstract

Purpose

In recent years, nanofluids are being widely used in many thermal systems because of their higher thermal conductivity and heat transfer rate. The higher thermal conductivity depends on many parameters such as size, shape and volume and the Brownian motion and thermophoresis of added nanoparticles. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the influence of the Brownian motion and thermophoresis on natural convection heat and mass transfer boundary layer flow of nanofluids over a vertical cone with radiation.

Design/methodology/approach

Using similarity variables, the non-linear partial differential equations, which represent momentum, energy and diffusion, are transformed into ordinary differential equations. The transformed conservation equations are solved numerically subject to the boundary conditions by using versatile, extensively validated, variational finite-element method.

Findings

The sway of significant parameters such as magnetic field (M), buoyancy ratio parameter (Nr), Brownian motion parameter (Nb), thermophoresis parameter (Nt), thermal radiation (R), Lewis number (Le) and chemical reaction parameter (Cr) on velocity, temperature and concentration evaluation in the boundary layer region is examined in detail. The results are compared with previously published work and are found to be in agreement. The velocity distributions are reduced, while temperature and concentration profiles elevate with a higher (M). With the improving values of (R), the velocity and temperature sketches improve, while concentration distributions are lowered in the boundary layer region. The temperature and concentration profiles are elevated in the boundary layer region for higher values of (Nt). With the increasing values of (Nb), temperature profiles are enhanced, whereas concentration profiles get depreciated in the flow region.

Social implications

In recent years, it has been found that magneto-nanofluids are significant in many areas of science and technology. It has applications in optical modulators, magnetooptical wavelength filters, tunable optical fiber filters and optical switches. Magnetic nanoparticles are especially useful in biomedicine, sink float separation, cancer therapy, etc. Specific biomedical applications involving nanofluids include hyperthermia, magnetic cell separation, drug delivery and contrast enhancement in magnetic resonance imaging.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, no studies have assessed the impact of the two slip effects, namely, Brownian motion and thermophoresis, on the natural convection of electrically conducted heat and mass transfer to the nanofluid boundary layer flow over a vertical cone in the presence of radiation and chemical reaction; therefore, this problem has been addressed in this study. Comparison of the results of this study’s with those of previously published work was found to be in good agreement.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to understand the influence of velocity slip, nanoparticle volume fraction, chemical reaction and non-linear thermal radiation on MHD three-dimensional heat and mass transfer boundary layer flow over a stretching sheet filled with water-based alumina nanofluid. To get more meaningful results, the authors have taken nonlinear thermal radiation in the heat transfer process.

Design/methodology/approach

Suitable similarity variables are introduced to convert governing partial differential equations into the set of ordinary differential equations, and are solved numerically using a versatile, extensively validated finite element method with Galerkin’s weighted residual simulation. The velocity, temperature and concentration profiles of nanoparticles as well as skin friction coefficient, Nusselt number and Sherwood number for different non-dimensional parameters such as volume fraction, magnetic, radiation and velocity slip parameters as well as the Prandtl number are examined in detail, and are presented through plots and tables.

Findings

It is noticed that the rate of heat transfer enhances with higher values of nanoparticle volume fraction parameter. It is worth mentioning that the heat transfer rates improve as the values of increase. Increasing values of M, R, θw and β decelerates the thickness of the thermal boundary layer in the fluid regime. The heat transfer rates decelerate as the values of suction parameter increase.

Originality/value

The authors have written this paper based on the best of their knowledge on heat and mass transfer analysis of nanofluids. The information in this paper is new and not copied from any other sources.

Abstract

Purpose

The analysis of fluid flow and thermal transport performance inside the cavity has found numerous applications in various engineering fields, such as nuclear reactors and solar collectors. Nowadays, researchers are concentrating on improving heat transfer by using ternary nanofluids. With this motivation, the present study analyzes the natural convective flow and heat transfer efficiency of ternary nanofluids in different types of porous square cavities.

Design/methodology/approach

The cavity inclination angle is fixed ω = 0 in case (I) and ω=π4 in case (II). The traditional fluid is water, and Fe3O4+MWCNT+Cu/H2O is treated as a working fluid. Ternary nanofluid's thermophysical properties are considered, according to the Tiwari–Das model. The marker-and-cell numerical scheme is adopted to solve the transformed dimensionless mathematical model with associated initial–boundary conditions.

Findings

The average heat transfer rate is computed for four combinations of ternary nanofluids: Fe3O4(25%)+MWCNT(25%)+Cu(50%),Fe3O4(50%)+MWCNT(25%)+Cu(25%),Fe3O4(33.3%)+MWCNT(33.3%)+Cu(33.3%) and Fe3O4(25%)+MWCNT(50%)+Cu(25%) under the influence of various physical factors such as volume fraction of nanoparticles, inclined magnetic field, cavity inclination angle, porous medium, internal heat generation/absorption and thermal radiation. The transport phenomena within the square cavity are graphically displayed via streamlines, isotherms, local and average Nusselt number profiles with adequate physical interpretations.

Practical implications

The purpose of this study is to determine whether the ternary nanofluids may be used to achieve the high thermal transmission in nuclear power systems, generators and electronic device applications.

Social implications

The current analysis is useful to improve the thermal features of nuclear reactors, solar collectors, energy storage and hybrid fuel cells.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, no research has been carried out related to the magneto-hydrodynamic natural convective Fe3O4+MWCNT+Cu/H2O ternary nanofluid flow and heat transmission filled in porous square cavities with an inclined cavity angle. The computational outcomes revealed that the average heat transfer depends not only on the nanoparticle’s volume concentration but also on the existence of heat source and sink.

Abstract

Purpose

A parabolic trough solar collector is an advanced concentrated solar power technology that significantly captures radiant energy. Solar power will help different sectors reach their energy needs in areas where traditional fuels are in use. This study aims to examine the sensitivity analysis for optimizing the heat transfer and entropy generation in the Jeffrey magnetohydrodynamic hybrid nanofluid flow under the influence of motile gyrotactic microorganisms with solar radiation in the parabolic trough solar collectors. The influences of viscous dissipation and Ohmic heating are also considered in this investigation.

Design/methodology/approach

Governing partial differential equations are derived via boundary layer assumptions and nondimensionalized with the help of suitable similarity transformations. The resulting higher-order coupled ordinary differential equations are numerically investigated using the Runga-Kutta fourth-order numerical approach with the shooting technique in the computational MATLAB tool.

Findings

The numerical outcomes of influential parameters are presented graphically for velocity, temperature, entropy generation, Bejan number, drag coefficient and Nusselt number. It is observed that escalating the values of melting heat parameter and the Prandl number enhances the Nusselt number, while reverse effect is observed with an enhancement in the magnetic field parameter and bioconvection Lewis number. Increasing the magnetic field and bioconvection diffusion parameter improves the entropy and Bejan number.

Originality/value

Nanotechnology has captured the interest of researchers due to its engrossing performance and wide range of applications in heat transfer and solar energy storage. There are numerous advantages of hybrid nanofluids over traditional heat transfer fluids. In addition, the upswing suspension of the motile gyrotactic microorganisms improves the hybrid nanofluid stability, enhancing the performance of the solar collector. The use of solar energy reduces the industry’s dependency on fossil fuels.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to analyze a new idea for external flow over a cylinder to increase the heat transfer and reduce pressure drop. Using wedge-shaped porous media in the front and wake regions of the cylinder can improve its hydrodynamic, and the rotating flow in the wake region can enhance the heat transfer with increased porous–liquid contact. Permeability plays a vital role, as a high-permeable medium improves heat transfer, whereas a low-permeable region improves the hydrodynamic.

Design/methodology/approach

Therefore, in the current research, external forced convection of nanofluid laminar flow over a bundle of cylinders is simulated using a two-phase mixture model. Four cases with different porous blocks around the cylinder are assessed: rectangular porous; wedge shape in trailing edge (TEP); wedge shape in leading and trailing edges (LTEP); and no porous block case. Also, three different lengths of wedge-shaped regions are considered for TEP and LTEP cases.

Findings

Results are presented in terms of Nusselt (Nu), Euler (Eu) and the performance evaluation criterion (PEC) numbers for various Reynolds (Re) and Darcy (Da) numbers.

Originality/value

It was found that in most situations, LTEP case provides the highest Nu and PEC values. Also, optimal Re and porous medium length exist to maximize PEC, depending on the values of Da and nanofluid volume fraction.
