Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to propose and test predictors of millennials’ social entrepreneurial intent (SEI), mediating mechanisms and influential contextual factors.

Design/methodology/approach

This study includes survey data from 1,890 respondents, 315 each from China, Mexico, Nigeria, Philippines, Russia and the USA.

Findings

Empirical results show that social entrepreneurial self-efficacy (SESE) mediated the relationship between perseverance and proactive personality and the dependent variable SEI in all six countries. Life satisfaction positively moderated this relationship among US students and negatively moderated it among Chinese students. In China dissatisfaction appears to enhance SEI, while in the US satisfaction appears to do so.

Originality/value

This paper identifies the mediating role of SESE and the moderating role of life satisfaction when explaining SEI, as well as providing data from millennials in six countries.

Abstract

Visco‐elastic fluid flow and heat transfer in a porous medium over a non‐isothermal stretching sheet have been investigated. The flow is influenced by linearly stretching the sheet in the presence of suction, blowing and impermeability of the wall. Thermal conductivity is considered to vary linearly with temperature. The intricate non‐linear problem has been solved numerically by shooting technique with fourth order Runge‐Kutta algorithm after using perturbation method. The zeroth order solutions are obtained analytically in the form of Kummer’s function. An analysis has been carried out for two different cases, namely prescribed surface temperature (PST) and prescribed heat flux (PHF) to get the effect of porosity and visco‐elasticity at various physical situations. The important finding is that the effect of visco‐elasticity and porosity is to increase the wall temperature in case of blowing and to decrease in both the cases of suction and when the stretching sheet is impermeable.

Abstract

In internal combustion engines, exhaust system plays a vital role in the improvement of the combustion efficiency. A good conditioned exhaust manifold increase the performance of the engine. The work is focused on reducing the backpressure in the exhaust manifold to increase the combustion efficiency using CFD. Flow through the exhaust manifold is analyzed using CFX with pressure and velocity parameters as boundary condition. The existing manifold is modified and the new design is analyzed. The results of new design are compared with the values of the existing model. Graphs are drawn for the new design and are compared with existing manifold. The decrease in back pressure is shown using contour and vector diagram. By comparing the existing and new design, the increase in efficiency is found.

Abstract

The domain of study on mediated suffering is ensconced within an Orientalist paradigm which ideologically structures our visuality and gaze. The consignment of suffering through bodies of alterity and the geo-politics of the Global South encodes the coloniality of power as a dominant reading. It then naturalizes the West as the voyeur in its consumption of the abject bodies of the Global South. Creating a binary through this East-West polarization in the oeuvre of suffering as a realm of study, it creates the hegemony of the West as the moral guardian of suffering, imbuing it with the right to accord pity and compassion to the lesser Other. Beyond elongating the Orientalist trajectory which lodged the body politic of the Global South as a sustained ideological site of suffering, it hermeneutically seals the East as irredeemable, ordaining it through the gaze over the Other as a mode of coloniality. In countering this Eurocentric proposition, this chapter contends that this coloniality of gaze needs further rumination and new sensibilities in the study of mediated suffering, particularly following 9/11 and the shifting of the geo-politics of suffering in which the West is dispossessed through its own manufactured ideologies of the ‘War on Terror’ such that it is under constant threat of terrorist attacks and through the movement of the displaced Other into the Global North. Besieged and entrapped through its own pathologies of risks and threats, the West is projected through its own victimhood and the politics of the Anthropocene within which risks are seemingly democratized by environmental degradation as an overarching threat for all of humanity. Despite these shifts in the global politics, the scholarship of suffering is locked into this polarity. The chapter interrogates this innate crisis within this field of scholarship.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the present study, which is part of a larger cross‐cultural study, is to examine two potential antecedents of entrepreneurial intent (EI): proactive personality (PP) and entrepreneurial self‐efficacy (ESE). Specifically, the study is interested in empirically testing the mechanism (mediation/moderation) by which ESE affected the relationship between PP/EI.

Design/methodology/approach

For testing the mediation and moderation hypotheses the study used structural equation modeling and moderated regression analyses respectively.

Findings

The authors found that PP has a robust relationship with the three different manifestations of EI – general, high growth, and lifestyle. Furthermore, ESE not only mediated the relationship between PP and all the three forms of EI but also moderated the relationship between PP and high growth EI as well as PP and lifestyle EI.

Research limitations/implications

The authors studied intent, not behavior, with the understanding that cognitive intent is a powerful predictor of later behavior. Future research can replicate this study using entrepreneurial behavior instead of intent. Implications for education and future research are discussed.

Practical implications

The results of the study can be used and applied to both pedagogic and business settings in the field of entrepreneurship.

Originality/value

The present study not only provides evidence for the robust relationship between EI and PP but provides insight into the mechanism by which ESE affects EI/PP relationship.

Abstract

This study investigates the relationship between being formerly incarcerated and the sexual health of African American and White men. It uses data from the 2011–2013 National Survey of Family Growth to compare the likelihoods of reporting sexually transmitted disease among African American and White men who were formerly incarcerated with those who were never incarcerated. The results show that having been incarcerated increases the likelihood of having sexually transmitted infections (STIs) for both African American men and White men. The results also reveal that, when controlling for sociodemographic and sexual network differences, White men maintain lower infection rates than do comparable African American men regardless of their former incarceration statuses. When several factors are taken into account, the likelihood of infections for African American men who have never been incarcerated are higher than those of White men who have been incarcerated. Racial disadvantage is a key determinant of disparities in STIs between formerly incarcerated White males and never incarcerated African American males. The implications of these results are discussed.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to examine the geochemical change experienced by laterites in Kerala, India, subjected to tropical monsoonal climate. These sediments are underlain by hard rock. The source rock characteristics have a major stake on the ultimate composition of sediments, as also the climatic conditions which an area experience.

Design/methodology/approach

Core samples have been obtained from several locations in a lateritic plateau. The upper portions of the borehole cores are composed of the lateritic hard cap, followed by lateritic soils. The soil samples were subjected to sediment texture analysis and XRF analysis (Bruker S4 Pioneer Sequential Wavelength-Dispersive XRF) for the determination of major elements ((in oxide form).

Findings

Major element geochemistry has revealed the following order of relative proportions of elements (in oxide form) SiO2 > Al2O3 > Fe2O3 > TiO2 >> Na2O > P2O5 > CaO > K2O > MgO > MnO. Even though the concentrations of SiO2, Al2O3 and Fe2O3 contribute 90% of major element chemistry, there is no significant correlation found for these elements within themselves or with others.

Research limitations/implications

Microscale movement of elements could not be characterised in this study. This requires access to an electron probe micro analyzer.

Practical implications

The practical implication of tropical weathering is that enhanced chemical leaching leads to movement of most elements out of the system, except for Al, leading to the possible formation of bauxite, or aluminous laterite.

Social implications

The weathered products in this study provide livelihood sustenance for many of the local households, through manual production of laterite bricks, which are used in construction.

Originality/value

The indices of the intensity of chemical alteration/weathering like chemical index of alteration (CIA), chemical index of weathering (CIW) and weathering index of parker (WIP) reveal that the sediments indicate intense weathering of the source area prior to being deposited in the present location. This indicates enhanced monsoonal activity in the provenance areas, than that obtained today.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study heat and mass transfer in copper-water and silver-water nanofluid flow over stretching sheet placed in saturated porous medium with internal heat generation or absorption. The authors further introduce a new algorithm for solving heat transfer problems in fluid mechanics. The model used for the nanofluid incorporates the nanoparticle volume fraction parameter and a consideration of the chemical reaction effects among other features.

Design/methodology/approach

The partial differential equations for heat and mass transfer in copper-water and silver-water nanofluid flow over stretching sheet were transformed into a system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations. Exact solutions for the boundary layer equations were obtained in terms of a confluent hypergeometric series. A novel spectral relaxation method (SRM) is used to obtain numerical approximations of the governing differential equations. The exact solutions are used to test the convergence and accuracy of the SRM.

Findings

Results were obtained for the fluid properties as well as the skin friction, and the heat and mass transfer rates. The results are compared with limiting cases from previous studies and they show that the proposed technique is an efficient numerical algorithm with assured convergence that serves as an alternative to numerical methods for solving nonlinear boundary value problems.

Originality/value

A new algorithm is used for the first time in this paper. In addition, new exact solutions for the energy and mass transport equations have been obtained in terms of a confluent hypergeometric series.

Abstract

Presents a numerical solution of the two‐dimensional laminar boundary layer problem on free and forced convection of an incompressible visco‐elastic fluid immersed in a porous medium over a stretching sheet. Here, the driving force for the flow is provided by an impermeable sheet stretched with a velocity proportional to the distance from a slit and buoyancy effects due to both temperature and concentration gradients. The resultant governing boundary layer equations are highly non‐linear and coupled form of partial differential equations, and they have been solved by employing a numerical shooting technique with fourth order Runge‐Kutta integration scheme. Numerical computations are carried out for the non‐dimensional physical parameters. The results are analyzed for the effect of different physical parameters like visco‐elasticity, permeability of the porous medium, Grashof number, Schmidt number and Prandtl number on the flow, heat and mass transfer characteristics. One of the several important observations is that the combined effect of thermal diffusion and diffusion of species is to increase the horizontal velocity profile and to decrease the temperature and concentration profiles in the boundary layer flow field.

Abstract

Purpose

The steady two-dimensional laminar boundary layer flow, heat and mass transfer over a flat plate with convective surface heat flux was considered. The governing nonlinear partial differential equations were transformed into a system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations and then solved numerically by Runge–Kutta method with the most efficient shooting technique. Then, the effect of variable viscosity and variable thermal conductivity on the fluid flow with thermal radiation effects and viscous dissipation was studied. Velocity, temperature and concentration profiles respectively were plotted for various values of pertinent parameters. It was found that the momentum slip acts as a boost for enhancement of the velocity profile in the boundary layer region, whereas temperature and concentration profiles decelerate with the momentum slip.

Design/methodology/approach

Numerical Solution is applied to find the solution of the boundary value problem.

Findings

Velocity, heat transfer analysis is done with comparing earlier results for some standard cases.
