Abstract

The phenomenon of superconductivity has been studied for 90 years, with the latest surge in popularity occurring in the late 1980s, when high‐temperature superconductors were first created. In this time much progress has been made to create commercially viable applications of the technology and understand the theory behind the phenomenon. Furthermore, at a time when national science policy was undergoing close scrutiny, the high‐temperature superconductor boom served as a high‐profile case study of the role of government in spurring the acceptance of new technologies. This bibliography provides resources that chronicle the technological and scientific developments in the field since its discovery and the policy decisions and issues that governments and society made when faced with a possible scientific revolution.

Abstract

Thick film superconductors with the nominal composition Bi2Pb0.5Sr2Ca2.5Cu3.5Ox were fired on stainless steel substrates and on alumina substrates covered with silver or gold thick film conductors. Films on stainless steel substrates were semiconducting due to reaction between the superconducting film and oxidised chromium and iron from the steel. Tc(R=0) of films on silver was between 80 K and 90 K while Tc (R=0) on gold was below 60 K. The low Tc (R=0) of films on gold is attributed to the interaction between the gold layer and copper from the superconductor.

Abstract

In the paper is analyzed the influence of Josephson's junctions array on the transport current and magnetic properties of the high temperature ceramical, granular superconductors. It has been considered the influence of vortices penetrating the Junctions on the macroscopic current flowing through the sample. For the case of absence transport current the existence of vortices modifies magnetic field dependence of the screening currents and then such magnetic properties, as the shape of magnetization curves, while when the transport current is flowing the existence of vortices may lead to new critical state approach and in the consequence to the anomalies of current‐voltage characteristics. Comparison of the model with experimental data and possible application of phenomenon as high Tc superconducting sensor is also briefly reviewed.

Abstract

A superconducting material with a composition Y1−xBa2Cu3O7−3/2x − x/2 Bi2O3 (x = 0·1 and 0·2) was synthesised. The influence of Bi2O3 additions on sintering was studied. Preliminary investigations of the Bi‐Sr‐Ca‐Cu‐O system were also made. Thick film pastes, prepared from Y1−xBixBa2Cu3O7 compositions, from the compound YBa2Cu3O7 with 10 w/o addition of Bi2CuO4 and from two compositions in the Bi‐Sr‐Ca‐Cu‐0 system, were fired on Al2O3 and ZrO2 substrates. All thick film materials based on YBa2Cu3O7 compound were superconducting at temperatures above 77 K when fired on ZrO2 substrates, while only a material with the starting composition Y0·8Ba2Cu3O6.7 − 0·1 Bi2O3 reached zero resistivity above 77 K on Al2O3 substrates. Tc (onset) of samples based on the YBa2Cu3O7 compound was around 95 K, and of samples from the Bi‐Sr‐Ca‐Cu‐O system between 95 and 100 K.

Abstract

Purpose

This article is aims to inform aircraft propulsion system designers of the implications which fundamental power distribution design assumptions have on the effectiveness and viability of turboelectric distributed propulsion (TeDP) systems. Improvements and challenges associated with selecting alternating or direct current for normal- and superconducting distribution systems are presented. Additionally, for superconducting systems, the benefits of bi-polar DC distribution are discussed, as well as the implications of operating voltage on the mass and efficiency of TeDP grid components.

Design/methodology/approach

The approach to this paper selects several high-level fundamental configuration decisions, which must be made, and it qualitatively discusses potential implications of these decisions.

Findings

Near term TeDP architectures which employ conventionally conducting systems may benefit from alternating current (AC) distribution concepts to eliminate the mass and losses associated with power conversion. Farther term TeDP concepts which employ superconducting technologies may benefit from direct current (DC) distribution to reduce the cryocooling requirements stemming from AC conduction losses. Selecting the operating voltage for superconducting concepts requires a divergence from the present day criteria employed with terrestrial superconducting transmission systems.

Practical implications

The criteria presented in the paper will assist in the early conceptual architecting of TeDP systems.

Originality/value

The governing principles behind the configuration of multi-MW airborne electrical microgrid systems are presently immature. This paper represents a unique look and the motivating principles behind fundamental electrical configuration decisions in the context of TeDP.

Abstract

The authors performed FACET (Investigation on Mechanism of Faceted Cellular Array Growth) experiments under long duration microgravity on the International Space Station (ISS) in 2010. The temperature and concentration distributions in the melt during the growth were precisely measured with high spatial resolution. Negative temperature gradient as well as negative concentration gradient ahead of the S/L interface can be expected to be the driving forces of the morphological instability. It is evident that the conventional model based on the frozen temperature approximation is insufficient to explain the growth mechanism of the faceted cellular array.
