Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present a markerless human–manipulators interface which maps the position and orientation of human end-effector (EE, the center of the palm) to those of robot EE so that the robot could copy the movement of the operator hand.

Design/methodology/approach

The tracking system of this human–manipulators interface comprises five Leap Motions (LMs) which not only makes up the narrow workspace drawback of one LM but also provides redundancies to improve the data precision. However, because of the native noises and tracking errors of the LMs, the measurement errors increase over time. To address this problem, two filter tools are integrated to obtain the relatively accurate estimation of the human EE, that is, Particle Filter for position estimation and Kalman Filter for orientation estimation. Because the operator has inherent perceptive limitations, the motions of the manipulator may be out of sync with the hand motions, so that it is hard to complete with the high performance manipulation. Therefore, in this paper, an over-damping method is adopted to improve reliability and accuracy.

Findings

A series of human–manipulators interaction experiments were carried out to verify the proposed system. Compared with the markerless and contactless methods(Kofman et al., 2007; Du and Zhang, 2015), the method described in this study is more accurate and efficient.

Originality/value

The proposed method would not hinder most natural human limb motion and allows the operator to concentrate on his/her own task, making it perform high-precision manipulations efficiently.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to develop a wearable-based human-manipulator interface which integrates the interval Kalman filter (IKF), unscented Kalman filter (UKF), over damping method (ODM) and adaptive multispace transformation (AMT) to perform immersive human-manipulator interaction by interacting the natural and continuous motion of the human operator’s hand with the robot manipulator.

Design/methodology/approach

The interface requires that a wearable watch is tightly worn on the operator’s hand to track the continuous movements of the operator’s hand. Nevertheless, the measurement errors generated by the sensor error and tracking failure signicantly occur several times, which means that the measurement is not determined with sufficient accuracy. Due to this fact, IKF and UKF are used to compensate for the noisy and incomplete measurements, and ODM is established to eliminate the influence of the error signals like data jitter. Furthermore, to be subject to the inherent perceptive limitations of the human operator and the motor, AMT that focuses on a secondary treatment is also introduced.

Findings

Experimental studies on the GOOGOL GRB3016 robot show that such a wearable-based interface that incorporates the feedback mechanism and hybrid filters can operate the robot manipulator more flexibly and advantageously even if the operator is nonprofessional; the feedback mechanism introduced here can successfully assist in improving the performance of the interface.

Originality/value

The interface uses one wearable watch to simultaneously track the orientation and position of the operator’s hand; it is not only avoids problems of occlusion, identification and limited operating space, but also realizes a kind of two-way human-manipulator interaction, a feedback mechanism can be triggered in the watch to reflect the system states in real time. Furthermore, the interface gets rid of the synchronization question in posture estimation, as hybrid filters work independently to compensate the noisy measurements respectively.

Abstract

The theory is presented of the increase in damping that can be obtained when a damping compound is added to a simple structure vibrating in a bending mode. Consideration has been given to the use of ‘Aquaplas’ damping compound on a vibrating stringer‐skin combination, and it has been shown that the maximum damping ratio is obtained when the material is applied to the stringer flange over the centre 40 per cent of the pin‐ended length of the beam. A preliminary experimental investigation is described, in which damping measurements were made on a simple structural specimen treated with Aquaplas. A new method was used successfully to determine the damping ratio of a heavily damped system. The damping properties of Aquaplas were evaluated, and some of the theoretical conclusions were verified. Some of the results obtained indicate that a more accurate mathematical representation must be sought for the visco‐elastic behaviour of Aquaplas than is provided by the ‘complex stiffness’ method.

Abstract

Purpose

To provide a general review of the flight flutter test techniques utilized in aeroelastic stability flight testing of aircraft, and to highlight the key items involved in flight flutter testing of aircraft, by emphasizing all the main information processed during the flutter stability verification based on flight test data.

Design/methodology/approach

Flight flutter test requirements are first reviewed by referencing the relevant civil and military specifications. Excitation systems utilized in flight flutter testing are overviewed by stating the relative advantages and disadvantages of each technique. Flight test procedures followed in a typical flutter flight testing is described for different air speed regimes. Modal estimation methods, both in frequency and time domain, used in flutter prediction are surveyed. Most common flight flutter prediction methods are reviewed. Finally, key considerations for successful flight flutter testing are noted by referencing the related literature.

Findings

Online, real time monitoring of flutter stability during flight testing is very crucial, if the flutter character is not known a priori. Techniques such as modal filtering can be used to uncouple response measurements to produce simplified single degree of freedom responses, which could then be analyzed with less sophisticated algorithms that are more able to run in real time. Frequency domain subspace identification methods combined with time‐frequency multiscale wavelet techniques are considered as the most promising modal estimation algorithms to be used in flight flutter testing.

Practical implications

This study gives concise but relevant information on the flight flutter stability verification of aircraft to the practicing engineer. The three important steps used in flight flutter testing; structural excitation, structural response measurement and stability prediction are introduced by presenting different techniques for each of the three important steps. Emphasis has been given to the practical advantages and disadvantages of each technique.

Originality/value

This paper offers a brief practical guide to all key items involved in flight flutter stability verification of aircraft.

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose a virtual testing strategy in order to predict damping due to the joints which are present in the ARIANE 5 launcher.

Design/methodology/approach

Since engineering finite element codes do not give satisfactory results, either because they are too slow or because they cannot calculate dissipation accurately, a new computational tool is introduced based on the LArge Time INcrement (LATIN) method in its multiscale version.

Findings

The capabilities of the new strategy are illustrated on one of the joints of ARIANE 5. The damping predicted virtually is compared to experimental results, and the approach appears promising.

Originality/value

The tool which has been developed gives access to calculations which were previously unaffordable with standard computational codes, which may improve the design process of launchers. The code is transferred into ASTRIUM‐ST, where it is being used to build a database of dissipations in the joints of the ARIANE 5 launcher.

Abstract

Purpose

In this study, a railway superstructure is modeled with a new approach called locally continuous supporting, and its behavior under the effect of moving load is analyzed by using analytical and numerical techniques. The purpose of the study is to demonstrate the success of the new modeling technique.

Design/methodology/approach

In the railway superstructure, the support zones are not modeled with discrete spring-damping elements. Instead of this, it is considered to be a continuous viscoelastic structure in the local areas. To model this approach, the governing partial differential equations are derived by Hamilton’s principle and spatially discretized by the Galerkin’s method, and the time integration of the resulting ordinary differential equation system is carried out by the Newmark–Beta method.

Findings

Both the proposed model and the solution technique are verified against conventional one-dimensional and three-dimensional finite element models for a specific case, and a very good agreement between the results is observed. The effects of geometric, structural, and loading parameters such as rail-pad length, rail-pad stiffness, rail-pad damping ratio, the gap between rail pads and vehicle speed on the dynamic response of railway superstructure are investigated in detail.

Originality/value

There are mainly two approaches to the modeling of rail pads. The first approach considers them as a single spring-damper connected in parallel located at the centroid of the rail pad. The second one divides the rail pad into several parts, with each of part represented by an equivalent spring-damper system. To obtain realistic results with minimum CPU time for the dynamic response of railway superstructure, the rail pads are modeled as continuous linearly viscoelastic local supports. The mechanical model of viscoelastic material is considered as a spring and damper connected in parallel.

Abstract

Purpose

The particle damper is an efficient vibration control device and is widely used in engineering projects; however, the performance of such a system is very complicated and highly nonlinear. The purpose of this paper is to accurately simulate the particle damper system properly, and help to understand the underlying physical mechanics.

Design/methodology/approach

A high-fidelity simulation process is well established to account for all significant interactions among the particles and with the host structure system, including sliding friction, gravitational forces, and oblique impacts, based on the modified discrete element method. In this process, a suitable particle damper system is modeled, reaction forces between particle aggregates and the primary structure are incorporated, a reasonable contact force model and time step are determined, and an efficient contact detection algorithm is adopted.

Findings

The numerical results are further validated by both special computational tests and shaking table tests, with good agreements to the experimental results. The method is shown to be effective and accurate to simulate the particle damper system.

Originality/value

The approaches described in this paper provide an efficient numerical way to investigate complex particle damper systems.

Abstract

Purpose

A new cutting tool is always well-defined and sharp at the onset of the metal cutting process and gradually losses these properties as the machining process advances. Similarly, at the beginning of the machining process, amplitude of tool vibrations is considerably low and it increases gradually and peaks at the end of the service period of the cutting tool while machining. It is significant to provide a corresponding real-time varying damping to control this chatter, which directly influences accuracy and quality of productivity. This paper aims to review the literature related to the application of smart fluid to control vibration in metal cutting and also focused on the challenges involved in the implementation of active control system during machining process.

Design/methodology/approach

Smart dampers, which are used as semi-active and active dampers in metal cutting, were reviewed and the research studies carried out in the field of the magnetorheological (MR) damper were concentrated. In smart materials, MR fluids possess some disadvantages because of their sedimentation of iron particles, leakage and slow response time. To overcome these drawbacks, new MR materials such as MR foam, MR elastomers, MR gels and MR plastomers have been recommended and suggested. This review intents to throw light into available literature which exclusively deals with controlling chatter in metal cutting with the help of MR damping methods.

Findings

Using an MR damper popularly known for its semi-active damping characteristics is very adaptable and flexible in controlling chatter by providing damping to real-time amplitudes of tool vibration. In the past, many researchers have attempted to implement MR damper in metal cutting to control vibration and were successful. Various methods with the help of MR fluid are illustrated.

Research limitations/implications

A new cutting tool is always well-defined and sharp at the onset of metal cutting process and gradually losses these properties as the machining process advances. Similarly, at the beginning of the machining process, amplitude of tool vibrations is considerably low and it increases gradually and peaks at the end of service period of cutting tool while machining. Application of MR damper along with the working methodology in metal cutting is presented, challenges met are analyzed and a scope for development is reviewed.

Practical implications

This study provides corresponding real-time varying damping to control tool vibration which directly influences accuracy and quality of productivity. Purpose

Most systems have a non-linear (NL) behavior and measured signals reflect this non-linearity such that in general they are composed with more than one sinusoidal component. NL analysis methods represent an option for analyzing such signals, however these methods have been developed for single frequency signals, this forces to implement a components separation procedure before performing the signal analysis. The purpose of this paper is to present a new method for analyzing multi-component signals that allows calculating amplitude, frequency and damping constants of the contained sinusoidal components. The method is able to simultaneously identify the different components within a detection bandwidth without previous separation of mono-components, as needed for most methods in used today.

Design/methodology/approach

The method proposed in this work characterizes sinusoidal signals determining their amplitude, frequency and damping constant. This method is based on transforming from the time domain to the z-domain an oscillatory signal that may or may not possess damping. Since frequency and damping of a signal can be determined knowing its z-domain poles, using the signal in z-transform domain an equations system to find the signal poles can be written.

Findings

From the results it can be concluded that the proposed method is reliable and consistent. One quality of the method is its short delay, when the procedure starts there is a delay equal to the time needed to accumulate four samples for each detectable frequency in order to perform the first calculation, after this, the algorithm can deliver a result at each sampling instant. This short delay and the low complexity of the algorithm can permit using the method in real time applications.

Originality/value

The proposed method is able to determine frequencies, damping constants and amplitudes of the components of a signal without a previous separation of mono-components, in contrast with other methods that require filter banks tuned using a previous knowledge of the signal. Moreover unlike techniques such as the Hilbert-Huang Transform the proposed method can be applied to signals with components having very close frequencies.
