Abstract

Organizational performance is greatly influenced by employee behaviours and the resulting market orientation that they possess. Market orientation is a behavioural culture that affects strategy formulation and strategy implementation, and how an organization interacts with its environment and adjusts to changes within that context. The relationship between market orientation and performance is robust across several environmental contexts that are characterized by varying degrees of market turbulence, competitive intensity, and products/services introduction rates. This study identifies co‐aligned market orientation and strategy profiles corresponding to unique competitive contexts that represent best practices for an organization seeking to maximize performance in a high technology environment. This relationship becomes dynamic when one considers the assertion that organization culture is synonymous with strategy and the evidence that the external environment affects organizational culture. As a result, the ability to profile ideal orientations will have significant strategic and performance implications for organizations that will contribute to the development of a sustainable competitive advantage.

Abstract

The study here responds to the view that the crucial problem in strategic management (research) is firm heterogeneity – why firms adopt different strategies and structures, why heterogeneity persists, and why competitors perform differently. The present study applies complexity theory tenets and a “neo-configurational perspective” of Misangyi et al. (2016) in proposing complex antecedent conditions affecting complex outcome conditions. Rather than examining variable directional relationships using null hypotheses statistical tests, the study examines case-based conditions using somewhat precise outcome tests (SPOT). The complex outcome conditions include firms with high financial performances in declining markets and firms with low financial performances in growing markets – the study focuses on seemingly paradoxical outcomes. The study here examines firm strategies and outcomes for separate samples of cross-sectional data of manufacturing firms with headquarters in one of two nations: Finland (n = 820) and Hungary (n = 300). The study includes examining the predictive validities of the models. The study contributes conceptual advances of complex firm orientation configurations and complex firm performance capabilities configurations as mediating conditions between firmographics, firm resources, and the two final complex outcome conditions (high performance in declining markets and low performance in growing markets). The study contributes by showing how fuzzy-logic computing with words (Zadeh, 1966) advances strategic management research toward achieving requisite variety to overcome the theory-analytic mismatch pervasive currently in the discipline (Fiss, 2007, 2011) – thus, this study is a useful step toward solving the crucial problem of how to explain firm heterogeneity.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyse the impact of market orientation on strategy orientation (communication, target and image strategy). This impact is studied by using a multicultural approach (Hungarian and French wineries).

Design/methodology/approach

A questionnaire was completed by 131 French wineries – châteaux and 66 Hungarian wineries. French wineries are located in the Bordeaux region. Participants were obtained by sending questionnaire to wineries lists provided by wine‐related organizations. Market orientation and strategy orientation scales were constructed by using confirmatory factor analysis and this impact confirmed by using structural equation modelling. To measure the differences of this impact between French and Hungarian wineries, multigroup analysis is practiced.

Findings

Market orientation as information gathering, and difficulties involved in searching and planning are defined. Concerning the impact of market orientation on strategy orientation, the main finding is that information gathering and planning impacts positively on the development of communication and target strategies; and the difficulties involved in searching for information impact positively on image strategy. Two main differences appear between French and Hungarian wineries: information gathering and difficulties in searching for information.

Research limitations/implications

One main limit concerns the characteristics of Hungarian and French wineries that are not similar especially in terms of area size. So these cultural differences could be also explained by structural differences of the wineries.

Practical implications

The majority of wineries do not have organized and large information gathering systems and marketing strategies are defined by communication objectives because they have some difficulties in defining their target.

Originality/value

The paper shows how image and communication strategies are implemented in Hungarian and French wineries.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper analyzes the mediating role of green process innovation in the relationships of green entrepreneurial orientation and proactive sustainability strategy with environmental performance.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors analyze data from 81 Brazilian agriculture technology startups (AgTechs) using partial least squares–structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) and fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA).

Findings

The results show that the green process innovation assumes an important role in AgTechs, promoting full mediations between green entrepreneurial orientation and proactive sustainability strategy with environmental performance. There are two ways for AgTechs to achieve high environmental performance. In both, green process innovation is a central condition, while green entrepreneurial orientation or proactive sustainability strategy is a complementary condition.

Research limitations/implications

This study demonstrates how internal elements (green entrepreneurial orientation, proactive sustainability strategy and green process innovation) improve environmental performance. This answers calls to explore which elements translate green entrepreneurial orientation and proactive sustainability strategies into environmental performance, by highlighting the mediating role of green process innovation.

Practical implications

The findings are useful for founders and managers of AgTechs to find ways to manage sustainable technological advancement and cleaner production in agribusiness.

Originality/value

This study analyses the interface between sustainable entrepreneurship, strategy and innovation in promoting environmental performance of AgTechs from an emerging economy country.

Abstract

Purpose

This study seeks to draw on the strategy implementation approach and the resource‐based view of the firm (RB theory) to investigate the relationships among competitive strategies (i.e. differentiation and cost‐leadership), responsive market orientation (RMO), proactive market orientation (PMO) and firm performance. The purpose is to show that competitive strategies have a significant effect on market orientation and market orientation has a significant effect on firm performance.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper designed a mail‐survey that was sent to senior executives, which resulted in 189 usable surveys. Data were analysed using partial least squares (PLS) to test the hypotheses.

Findings

The findings show that both competitive strategies influence RMO and PMO, which then influence firm performance. However, the results show that differentiation strategy has a stronger influence on RMO and PMO than cost‐leadership strategy, and that PMO has a stronger influence on performance than RMO.

Research limitations/implications

The study examined one set of capabilities (RMO and PMO); research opportunities exist for identifying other firm capabilities (e.g. organisational learning) and their relationships with competitive strategies.

Practical implications

Strategy implementation is a valid route to firm performance. Therefore, marketing managers must simultaneously develop competitive strategies and RMO and PMO to obtain increased firm performance outcomes.

Originality/value

The study conceptualises market orientation as RMO and PMO, and suggests that this treatment of market orientation is important in understanding its role in the competitive strategies of firms and consequent firm performance.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this research was to examine the link between supply chain management (SCM), market orientation, and organizational success, and to develop a model that describes the relationship among the three.

Design/methodology/approach

A survey of sales managers within large US manufacturers was used to collect data about market orientation, SCM strategy, and organizational performance. Five hypotheses were tested using structural equation modeling.

Findings

The resulting model suggests that a manufacturing firm's SCM strategy mediates the relationship between its market orientation and organizational success.

Research limitations/implications

Perhaps the most serious limitation of this study was its narrow focus on US manufacturing companies, thus precluding the generalization of findings to other sectors such as service and government sectors that may benefit from a market orientation and sound SCM strategy.

Practical implications

The study findings reinforce the importance of a market orientation for firms in the manufacturing sector, and likewise the importance of a sound SCM strategy. The success of firms depends on their ability to satisfy customers. Since market orientation is positively related to organizational success, and SCM strategy helps facilitate market orientation, top managers should view effective SCM as key in meeting customer needs to achieve long run success.

Originality/value

This paper examines the relationships among SCM strategy, market orientation and organizational success and is the first empirical research to propose a model of those relationships. Researchers can use the findings herein to generate ideas for future studies, and top managers can glean important knowledge about how effective SCM impacts organizational performance.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the relationship between market orientation and innovative marketing strategies and the effect of innovative marketing strategies on the performance of agro-food manufacturers.

Design/methodology/approach

Systematic random sampling was used, and semi-structured interviews were conducted with 380 agro-food manufacturers. Several statistical analyses, including Pearson correlation analysis and logistic regression analysis, were used to analyze the relationship between market orientation and innovative marketing strategies, and the effect of innovative marketing strategies on the performance of agro-food manufacturers.

Findings

All dimensions of market orientation – customer orientation, competitor orientation and inter-functional coordination – have significant relationships with innovative marketing strategies (product, price, promotion and distribution), while customer orientation and promotion showed a very strong relationship among other variables measured. Innovative marketing strategies, specifically promotion, had the most effect on the performance of agro-food manufacturers.

Research limitations/implications

The sample for this study was selected among agro-food manufacturers in major locations in Peninsular Malaysia. Hence, the findings may only give an initial overview of the current state of the agro-food manufacturers.

Originality/value

This study highlighted the significance of market orientation and innovative marketing strategies for the betterment of performance in the agro-food manufacturing sector.

Abstract

Purpose

This study argues that strategic information systems (SISs) are necessary for organizations’ survival and corporate performance in turbulent economic environments. Applying Miles and Snow’s strategy typology, the purpose of this paper is to explore how SIS supports business strategy and corporate performance.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses quantitative survey data from 389 Brazilian companies during economic crises and analyzes them using structural equation modeling.

Findings

There is strong evidence that SIS promotes capacity and flexibility to create competitive strategies in response to environmental changes. SIS significantly and positively predicts firms’ use of prospector strategies, reducing the need to sacrifice efficiency for innovation. SIS can predict corporate performance more strongly than firms’ strategic orientations can.

Practical implications

The results provide organizations insights on how SIS enables strategic planning processes to create competitive strategy and improve performance during economic turbulence.

Originality/value

This research demonstrates SIS’s positive effects during economic turbulence on competitive strategy and performance, revealing that corporate performance is influenced more by SIS (strategic process) than strategic orientation (content). Hence, this study fills a research gap in the information systems strategy literature by contributing new insights about SIS.

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to review the strategic fit of competitive strategies, market orientation types and innovation strategies.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper is prepared by reviewing the relevant literatures on competitive strategies, market orientation types and innovation strategies as well as comparing and contrasting the common characteristics to attain fit.

Findings

The paper presents the criteria for distinguishing the different types of competitive strategies, market orientations and innovation strategies, along with a framework that fits a particular type of competitive strategy, market orientation and innovation strategy.

Practical implications

The paper provides an action framework based on characteristics of the competitive strategies (business strategy) along with the benefits of adopting a particular market orientation type and innovation strategy (functional strategies). This will facilitate the managers to execute appropriate competitive strategy that could well align with appropriate market orientation and innovation strategy.

Originality/value

This brief paper presents an original framework, with significant practical applications in a concise manner. The framework will provide a guide to the hotel top management in shaping and fitting an appropriate competitive strategies, market orientation types and innovation strategies.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to show how market orientation (MO), brand (BR) and business strategy (cost leadership strategy and differentiation strategy), which play mediating and moderating roles, respectively, can increase competitive advantage (CA). With a focus on brand, market orientation, cost leadership strategy (CS) and differentiation strategy (DS), as well as an analysis of variance control on varying business sizes per business seniority, the current study made a theoretical contribution.

Design/methodology/approach

An empirical study was created using a quantitative methodological technique. The surveyed data were collected from 379 managers or owners who participated in a face-to-face survey at different food processing companies in Vietnam. To test the hypotheses, the gathered information was examined utilizing multigroup analysis and partial least squares structural equation modeling.

Findings

The brand was found to have the greatest positive impact on competitive advantage, followed by a business strategy that positively influenced competitive advantage, and, finally, business strategies that significantly moderated the third strong positive impact between market orientation and competitive advantage. Market orientation has the fourth strong positive impact on competitive advantage, whereas brand has the lowest positive impact on market orientation.

Originality/value

This is the first investigation, according to the authors’ knowledge, into the role of market orientation as a mediator in the relationship between brand and competitive advantage in addition to the regulatory role of business strategy at two strategic levels: cost leadership and strategic focus as well as the difference between competitive advantage and market orientation in the Vietnamese food sector.
