Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this research is to enable the examination of sensemaking mechanisms, inherent in the discourse of organizational spirituality (OS), which embed meanings this discourse creates. In order to achieve this goal the paper explores the pivotal notion of “spirituality” in OS, examines the conditions of emergence of its main characteristics, and inquires into OS participants' mental processes which help to sustain it. Thus, the conceptual space is critically explored in which organizational actors make their commitments to attain goals by spiritual means and in which the alleged causal mechanisms operate.

Design/methodology/approach

The approach taken is a critical analysis of literature and empirical material.

Findings

The logic of OS conceptual framework is vastly inconsistent with rationalism, which underpins typical functionalist assertions of OS proponents. The central OS notion – spirituality – lacks concrete and independent characteristics. It can be perceived as a mere classification tool which groups together certain “positive” phenomena, perspectives or outcomes. The legitimacy of this operation within the discourse is guaranteed by its episteme – the set of rules, which makes certain moves possible and excludes some others. It may easily enforce or preclude the particular interpretations of organizational reality or validity of certain initiatives. The latter hints at the political dimension of OS.

Research limitations/implications

Potential researchers should be sensitive to the issues of logical circularity of OS discourse and its degree of incoherence with rationalist assumptions. The design of research on OS should attempt to delve into meanings created by OS discourse profiting from proximity to research subjects ensured by careful application of qualitative methods. Research could focus more on the political dimension: issues of power relations; methods of exerting influence; gaining support, etc., instead of contemplating more vague territories which OS studies seem inclined to explore. These results refer to a limited number of participants and organizations and are not fully generalizable, which is inevitable in qualitative research. The geographical concentration of the research sample might have affected the results to some extent, however this fact is innocuous to the overall validity of this study.

Originality/value

Beyond the scope of many recent papers that emphasize the positive role of organizational spirituality as a means of attaining particular objectives, the paper offers an alternative approach in which OS makes such calculations very difficult, and yet creates conditions which are conducive to advancing OS participants' political agendas.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to ascertain whether the organizational spirituality (OS) also called for spiritually-based organization (SBO) concept continues to be, in fact, a source of refreshing ideas to the organizational studies.

Design/methodology/approach

Regarding that OS is a theme that does not pertain to the scientific mainstream, the criteria to select valuable work were broader. On this basis, this literature review focused on a set of distinct sources: empirical and theoretical-conceptual papers (i.e. peer-reviewed), books, book chapters and doctoral dissertations. The material should be written in English and matched specifically the terms “spiritually-based organization,” “organizational spirituality” and “spiritual organization” in the websites of prominent scientific publications such as Google Scholar, EBSCO, Emerald, Sage and Elsevier. The premise was to portray an ample overview about what the scientific research has been yielded on this topic covering the period of 23 years (i.e. 1999–2022).

Findings

Data revealed that a large portion of the scholarly work of OS has been largely published in journals of modest factor impact or in books/book chapters. Such evidence indicates that OS definitively is not embraced by the scientific mainstream, despite the relevance of this topic. Further, it appears that the study, research and writings about SBOs, despite their positive effects and features, do not draw the attention of the majority of academic community. As a result, this field of knowledge has been characterized by scant work. This conclusion sounds somewhat astonishing considering that companies strongly driven by financial and economic concerns have proved not to be useful to humankind well-being and the planet.

Originality/value

This review sought to concentrate only on scholarly work that could bring something noteworthy to the debate of the OS concept. By the same token, other related concepts such as workplace spirituality and spirituality in the workplace, which have been properly explored, were not approached here. The author surmises that such path may account for somewhat the reduced number of work found about this topic, despite the fact this review drew on Google Scholar as well.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to evaluate the impacts of human capital factors in terms of spiritual intelligence (SI), emotional intelligence (EI) and workplace attitude in terms of trust on organizational sustainability (OS) in the hotel industry in Malaysia. In addition, this study intends to examine the mediation role of trust between human capital factors and OS.

Design/methodology/approach

A survey method using a questionnaire was used to collect data from 361 employees, including middle management, who are in direct contact with guests in the hotel industry. The partial least squares technique, SmartPLS3.3.3, was used to examine the hypotheses.

Findings

The analysis found support for the impacts of SI, EI and trust on OS. Additionally, the mediation effect of trust was also supported.

Originality/value

This pioneering study has combined human capital factors (i.e. SI and EI) to predict their effects on OS in the hotel industry. Moreover, this research established relatively new relationships between SI and OS and between EI and OS through the mediation role of trust. Furthermore, this study confirmed the validity and reliability of SI, EI and OS at first and second orders. Given the adverse impact of COVID-19 and its variants on the sustainability of all business organizations, this research has highlighted the crucial role of human factors and workplace attitude in the sustainability of the hospitality sector during difficult times.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to carry out an empirical examination to assess the nature of effects an employee’s individual spirituality and organizational spirituality have on the employee’s experience of meaning in work and community at work facets of workplace spirituality.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper specifies and examines, using a cross-sectional survey research design, the empirical support for two alternative models – a direct effects model and a moderating effect model – of the likely influences of an employee’s individual spirituality and organizational spirituality on the meaning and community facets of workplace spirituality.

Findings

The findings indicate considerable support for the direct effects model but no support for the moderating effect model. Within the direct effects model, organizational spirituality had much stronger association than employees’ individual spirituality with the workplace spirituality facets of meaning and community.

Research limitations/implications

This study may encourage future research to examine other antecedents of workplace spirituality, and the moderators and mediators of the relationship between organizational spirituality and workplace spirituality.

Practical implications

It suggests to the practitioners that for enhancing employee experiences of workplace spirituality, organizational spirituality implementation is a more effective way than developing employees’ individual spirituality.

Social implications

The study indicates that employees’ spiritual needs of meaning and community at work can be better fulfilled through organizational spirituality implementation than through individual spirituality development.

Originality/value

This is an original empirical examination and its value partly comes from its research implications and practice implications.

Abstract

This paper shows how the perceptions of people regarding five dimensions of workplace spirituality (team’s sense of community, alignment with organizational values, sense of contribution to society, enjoyment at work, and opportunities for inner life) predict affective, normative, and continuance commitment, as well as self‐reported individual performance. One sample in Portugal and another in Brazil were collected. The findings show that employees’ perceptions of workplace spirituality predict significant variance of commitment and individual performance in both samples. The empirical evidence suggests that workplace spirituality is a pertinent construct for researchers and an important concern to be taken into account by managers.

Abstract

Purpose

Synthesizing theories of innovative work behavior, workplace spirituality and person-organization (P-O) fit, this paper aims to build and test a theoretical model linking workplace spirituality, perceived organizational support (POS) and innovative work behavior via P-O fit. This study examined the mediating effect of P-O fit on the relationship of workplace spirituality and POS with innovative work behavior (IWB).

Design/methodology/approach

A sample of 434 employees and 59 supervisors from five leading hotels of China was used for this study.

Findings

This study found that workplace spirituality and POS both positively affected P-O fit. Workplace spirituality, P-O fit and POS positively influenced innovative work behavior. P-O fit acted as a partial mediator between workplace spirituality and IWB and between POS and IWB.

Originality/value

This study has tested the effect of workplace spirituality as an antecedent of innovative work behavior for the first time.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyse the role of spirituality and emotional intelligence in understanding creativity, attitudes towards entrepreneurship, perceived behavioural control (PBC) and entrepreneurial intention of students of a Portuguese higher education institution. A conceptual model is proposed representing direct and indirect relationships among these constructs.

Design/methodology/approach

A quantitative approach was adopted in the form of a survey questionnaire applied to a sample of 345 university students. To test the hypothesised relationships between the constructs, the authors used the path analysis technique.

Findings

Results show that personal attitudes towards entrepreneurship and PBC have a positive effect on entrepreneurial intention, and mediate the effect of emotional intelligence on entrepreneurial intention. Emotional intelligence has a direct positive effect on creativity. The results reveal no or a tenuous influence of spirituality in the various concepts studied.

Practical implications

It is expected that the model can serve as a support for facilitating and promoting entrepreneurship in higher education environments. It could be of valuable use to furthering our understanding of the role of individual/psychological characteristics, motivational and attitudinal factors in fostering entrepreneurial intention of university students.

Originality/value

Some studies suggest that psychological factors play an essential role in developing alternative models to the entrepreneurial process. However, the studies that directly explore how individual differences in emotional intelligence, spirituality and creativity relate to entrepreneurial intention are relatively few.

Spirituality in the workplace is a concept that has been emphasized a lot in recent years. However, the relationship of this concept with gender and discrimination has not been adequately addressed. Individual and organizational positive outcomes of spirituality in the workplace cannot be obtained when discrimination is in question. This is because the concepts of spirituality and discrimination in the workplace are completely opposite to each other. In order to prevent discrimination based on gender, sexual orientation, race, age, religion, disability and to establish spirituality in the workplace, organizations should follow awareness and training programs to eliminate prejudices of their management and employees, give importance to differences, develop an understanding of democracy and justice within the organization and development egalitarian and anti-discrimination policies and application. In this direction, while the differences are managed correctly, spirituality will be established in the workplace.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to analyze the influence of Islamic spirituality toward organizational citizenship behavior from Islamic perspective (OCBIP), influence Islamic spirituality toward OCBIP in which spirituality at work and organizational commitment become mediators and influence of OCBIP toward working performance.

Design/methodology/approach

The study was categorized as an explanatory research. The setting of the study was the branch office of BRI Syariah in Malang. The population was employees of the branch office. The samples were 217 employees of BRI Syariah Malang. With an estimated population of 193 individuals and a 5 per cent confidence level, the total samples were 150 employees, including the supervisors. The sampling technique was proportional random sampling, in which all members of the population have an equal chance to become a sample based on proportion per section (Sekaran, 2003). The data were primary data obtained through questionnaires. The questionnaire consisted of question items on Islamic spirituality, workplace spirituality, organizational commitment and OCBIP. The data analysis technique was partial least squares (PLS).

Findings

Islamic spirituality is not directly influencing toward OCBIP, spirituality at work and organizational commitment as moderation variables in the influence of Islamic spirituality toward OCB IP, OCBIP had influence toward working performance. Higher OCBIP would result in better working performance accepted, and at the opposite, lower OCBIP would result in poorer working performance.

Originality/value

There are some limitations of previous studies that examine spirituality relationships with OCB. Nasrudin et al. (2013) and Kazemipour et al. (2012) found significant correlations between spirituality with OCB, but there is an inconsistency of research findings to suggest that spirituality has no direct effect on OCB, but through individual perceptions of organization. As the study of spirituality with OCB is still limited, this study attempts to explain OCB from an Islamic perspective, to propose a framework on Islamic spirituality, spirituality at work as an individual source of OCB and moderation of organizational commitment using Djafri and Noordin’s (2017) and previous empirical studies, with an aim to integrate the spirituality and OCB in a model that can be used to better understand OCB. It is hoped that this model development will reduce the scarcity of literature on spirituality with OCB through organizational commitment. This will help the organization to understand the role of spirituality and organizational commitment to improve OCB of employees that ultimately will improve organizational performance.

Abstract

Purpose

Highlighting the prominence of spirituality at work, this paper aims to scrutinize the mediating role of perceived person-organization fit (P-O fit) on the relationship between workplace spirituality and nurse work engagement in the context of two Indonesian government hospital.

Design/methodology/approach

Cross-sectional survey data of 138 nursing staff from two government hospitals operating in Indonesia were analyzed using structural equation modeling to estimate the mediation effects of perceived P-O fit on the relationship between workplace spirituality and nurse engagement.

Findings

The results of the research proved the positive effect of workplace spirituality on nurse work engagement. Likewise, P-O fit act as a mechanism through which workplace spirituality affects nurse engagement.

Research limitations/implications

This study only uses a sample of two government hospitals, which may limit the generalizability of the outcomes. Despite of the small sample, the result of this inquiry provides new insights into the advancement of human behavior theory in hospital service, especially on the factors that influence nurse work engagement. On a broader sense, top management might set a necessary program to wholly nurture nurse spiritual potential as a step to convalesce their spiritual awareness.

Practical implications

Based on the discovery, the study presents strong theoretical and managerial implications that can be used by health care institutions to evaluate the importance of workplace spirituality on employee engagement among nurses. This paper contributes by fulfilling the fissure in the management literature of health care, in which empirical studies on workplace spirituality in the relationship with employee engagement have been scarce until now.

Originality/value

The present perceived P-O fit in the relation between the spirituality of the workplace and nurse engagement enhances human behavior theory in the health care context.
