Abstract

Explains and outlines the ideas of the Freiburg School. Points to the fact that the constitutive (structurizing) and regulative principles for economic policy developed by this school need operationalization in order to serve as a compass for economic policy. Presents a checklist to test policy proposals as to their effectiveness, necessity and cost appropriateness.

Abstract

It is often “assumed,” even among well-informed lawyers and economists, that European competition law is an emulation of the US antitrust law because of American influence on European political and economic debates after the Second World War. However, such an assumption is disputable: in accordance with Professor Gerber, the competition law in Europe is an indigenous product based primarily on ideas developed in Germany by the so-called ordoliberal thought. In this respect, the article 102 TFEU may be considered a proof. The aims of this article are to furnish a critical examination of ordoliberal ideas of anticompetitive conducts and underline the relevance of ordoliberal thought for the development of the modern European competition law.

Abstract

Purpose

The main aim of this paper was to study the self-lubricating behavior and failure mechanism of silver-rich solid film for in-depth analyzing of the friction and wear property of TiAl-10 wt. per cent Ag self-lubricating composite.

Design/methodology/approach

The friction and wear property of TiAl-10 wt. per cent Ag self-lubricating composite sliding against Si3N4 ball was tested under the testing conditions of ball-on-disk wear system. Field emission scanning electron microscopy and electron probe microanalyzer were used to analyze the surface morphology of silver-rich solid film. The main element contents were tested by energy dispersive spectroscopy. Silver phase on wear scar could be well identified using X-ray photo-electron spectroscopy. The theory calculation of shearing stress on wear scar was executed to discuss the local failure mechanism of silver-rich solid film. The lubricating role of silver was also discussed to analyze the anti-friction and anti-wear behavior of silver-rich solid film.

Findings

The friction coefficients and wear rates of TASC gradually reduced at 0-65 min, and approached to small values (0.31 in friction coefficient and 3.10×104 mm3N-1m-1 in wear rate) at 65-75 min. The excellent friction and wear behavior of TASC was mainly attributed to the lubricating property of silver-rich film at 65-75 min. At 12→20 N, surface shearing stress increased up to 146.31 MPa, and exceeded more than the shearing strength (125 MPa) of silver-rich film, which caused the propagating of fatigue crack and the destroying of silver-rich film, leading to high friction and severe wear.

Originality/value

It is important that the self-lubricating behavior and local failure of solid film is explored for further understanding the friction and wear property of TiAl alloys.

Abstract

Gives an overview of the reception of Eucken’s work abroad and the influences on the thinking of Eucken from outside the German language area. Further, points to the contribution of Eucken to monetary and capital theory and the theory of the centrally administered economy, the significance of the thinking of Eucken, for almost all questions on the agenda of modern economic policy is illustrated. This especially applies to the parts which are often marked as utopian, among which are his ideas in the area of (international) monetary policy.

Abstract

Argues that different elements in Eucken′s work have had insufficient attention in post‐war Germany, in science as well as in political practice. In Eucken′s thinking, order (especially order in the economic and political field and the interconnection between them) is the central concept. In politics, insufficient attention was paid to the interdependence between the different orders, and the balance of freedom and power. Politics was characterized by pragmatism. A principal decision in favour of the Wettbewerbsordnung (an economic order based on competition), advocated by Eucken, was never made. This was expressed in insufficient fighting against the formation of economic power (competition policy) and in a neglect of the environment. Compares the social philosophies of Eucken and Hayek.

Abstract

Describes the methodological ideas of Eucken and points to the actual significance of them. Eucken is, in his thinking on philosophical and methodological problems, related to Husserl. The theory of the economic order (Ordnungs‐theorie) is interdisciplinary. All kinds of modern directions in economics, which develop separately, e.g. property rights theory, evolutionary economics and new institutional economics, can be integrated in his methodological approach.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims to address the recent debate over the “relevance lost” of business school research and points to the establishment of neoliberal economic policy during the past three decades as an example of social change that has not been thoroughly theorized in business school research.

Design/methodology/approach

The literature on neoliberalism is reviewed and, more specifically, its implications for the financialization of industry and the widespread use of financial theory in corporate governance. The paper outlines some of the consequences of neoliberalism, pointing out the connections between the growth of the finance industry and the 2008 financial crisis.

Findings

The paper demonstrates that the financialization of industry and the institutionalization of finance theory, as the guiding corporate governance model used in the new millennium, have led to a concentration of capital in the finance industry. As a consequence, other productive investments have been postponed. Despite such shifts in corporate governance and economic policy more broadly, neoliberalism is a relatively marginal topic of discussion in business school research.

Social implications

The study stresses the need for broadening the scope of business school research and addressing more long-term institutional changes in economic policy and corporate governance.

Originality/value

The paper emphasizes the need, not only for promoting practitioner relevance in business school research, but also for enacting an ambitious research agenda of broader social relevance.

Abstract

Nobody concerned with political economy can neglect the history of economic doctrines. Structural changes in the economy and society influence economic thinking and, conversely, innovative thought structures and attitudes have almost always forced economic institutions and modes of behaviour to adjust. We learn from the history of economic doctrines how a particular theory emerged and whether, and in which environment, it could take root. We can see how a school evolves out of a common methodological perception and similar techniques of analysis, and how it has to establish itself. The interaction between unresolved problems on the one hand, and the search for better solutions or explanations on the other, leads to a change in paradigma and to the formation of new lines of reasoning. As long as the real world is subject to progress and change scientific search for explanation must out of necessity continue.

Abstract

Eucken′s paradigm of a “social market economy” provides a framework for a functional free‐market mechanism, which not only accommodates development and change, but which also assures human dignity and freedom. Eucken places special emphasis on the integration of economics with “order” and “justice”. He holds that an unconstrained laissez‐faire economy does not assure a competitive economy but that it will degenerate into monopolistic practices. Eucken formulates his “structural” and “regulating” principles to facilitate a functionally competitive economy with a compatible social policy, to assure greater efficiency and to reduce poverty.
