Abstract

Purpose

Employing big data analysis tools, this study examines the significance of supply chain integration affecting online financial consumption, analyzes the online financial consumption demand of mobile phone consumers, promotes the optimization of supply chain services with consumers as the focus and proposes full integration of a mobile phone supply chain in terms of product, logistics and marketing, in order to improve the supply and demand relationship between consumers and suppliers; the overall objective is to promote further development of online financial consumption.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, TF-IDF (term frequency–inverse document frequency) and cosine similarity text analysis are used for analyzing online demand for mobile phone products, studying the influence of supply chain services on consumption demand and identifying strategies for promoting overall optimization of the supply chain to meet online financial consumption demands of consumers; the study analyzes online reviews on mobile phone topics from the JingDong (JD) platform and Weibo platform.

Findings

Research results show that online demand for mobile phone products is greatly influenced by supply chain links such as product design, logistics transportation and marketing promotion. The consumption demand for different mobile phone products has different emphases, but the differences are not significant. The overall improvement of the supply chain should focus on product research and development, logistics layout optimization and marketing promotion, in order to meet and guide the online financial demand of consumers and improve the effectiveness of supply chain management.

Research limitations/implications

This study only considered data from China's largest online mobile phone sales platform and Weibo text data owing to the data sensitivity involved.

Originality/value

There are few supply chain optimization studies based on online financial consumption reviews from customers. Therefore, this study integrates online consumption trends into a supply chain analysis framework to explore strategies for promoting supply chain optimization according to customer demands, improving the benign interaction of participants in the supply chain and promoting the development of online financial consumption.

Abstract

Purpose

This study explores the influence of quality attributes and socio-demographics on Chinese consumers' general and online consumption of three origin-specific lobsters: Canadian, United States and Australian.

Design/methodology/approach

A web-based survey was administrated to 981 consumers from two cities in China: Shanghai and Qingdao. Descriptive analysis and binary logistic regression were used in the data analysis.

Findings

Chinese consumers were more willing to pay for the lobster quality attributes vitality, meat content, texture, size and safety. Their general and online consumption of three origin-specific lobsters is significantly linked to the following quality attributes and socio-demographics: meat content, size, shell hardness, texture, safety, nutrition, age, income, education, occupation, residential place and marital status.

Originality/value

This is the first study to explore the influence of quality attributes and socio-demographics on consumers' online consumption of luxury seafood.

Abstract

Purpose

Drawing on the mSERVQUAL model and spillover theory, this study aims to examine the mechanism through which food-ordering mobile app service quality influences users’ mobile app satisfaction, food satisfaction and repurchase intentions.

Design/methodology/approach

Online surveys were completed by 1,000 customers who used a food-ordering mobile app to order fast food on the day they completed the online survey. Structural equation modelling was then used to examine the proposed mechanism.

Findings

Results showed that the effects of food-ordering mobile app service quality on customer satisfaction (i.e. mobile app satisfaction and food satisfaction) and repurchase intention varied widely across service quality dimensions. Mobile app service quality had significant spillover effects on food satisfaction and repurchase intention.

Practical implications

Online food-delivery platforms should find the results insightful to better design their food-ordering mobile app. The findings can also assist restaurateurs and mobile payment companies with supporting the whole online food delivery process.

Originality/value

Rather than examining online food delivery service quality based on the service delivery process in the during-consumption stage or the service outcomes in the post-consumption stage, this study focused on the service quality in the pre-consumption stage to highlight the important role of online food delivery mobile apps. From a longitudinal perspective, this study drew on the associate network theory to explain the spillover effect of mobile app satisfaction in the pre-consumption stage on food satisfaction in the during-consumption stage and repurchase intention in the post-consumption stage.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study sets out to examine (1) how have conflicts been conceptualized and operationalized within the context of online consumption communities? (2) what are the main conflict management, resolution strategies and frameworks that have been identified? and (3) what are the gaps in the relevant body of work in terms of theoretical and methodological dimensions, and what implications do they have for future research.

Design/methodology/approach

This study adopts a systematic and multidisciplinary literature review of online conflicts. Following a descriptive and thematic content analysis, it examines 79 peer-reviewed scholarly articles of the past 20 years within 6 scientific databases.

Findings

The authors propose a literature-based conceptualization of online conflicts and a multi-level conflict resolution matrix based on the different governance structures and social control mechanisms investigated in extant research.

Originality/value

The originality of this study lies in the integrative and interdisciplinary view of online conflict in global consumption communities.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the impact of word-of-mouth (WOM) types, WOM valence, content types and discussion topics of user posts on online engagement in two channels of a consumption community. The posts are composed by users on the discussion forum and shared to the Facebook channel of the consumption community by the administrators.

Design/methodology/approach

The data for this study were obtained from a popular car consumption community in Vietnam. A total of 505 user posts on the discussion forum were manually coded and assigned to WOM types, valence and content characteristics. The online engagement metrics were measured by the number of views and replies on the discussion forum, and the number of likes, comments and shares on Facebook.

Findings

The results indicate that the WOM types and valence have a significant impact on online engagement and the popularity of posts on Facebook is associated with the number of views on a discussion forum. The content type and discussion topic partially influence some factors of the online engagement metrics.

Practical implications

The findings are helpful for consumption community administrators to understand and manage their users’ engagement. Moreover, it indirectly supports brands and companies, since the consumption communities also include sub-communities of particular brands and marketers cooperate with consumption communities for their social media marketing strategies.

Originality/value

This research contributes to the literature of online engagement in two aspects. First, this study examines the impact of WOM types and valence. Second, this is the first study investigating the effects of posts by users within an information flow from a discussion forum to Facebook.

Abstract

Purpose – The first purpose of this chapter is to better understand, and to propose a means to understand the ways selves are constructed in daily contingencies during consumption experiences. To do so, the second purpose, which aims to bring an additional contribution, is to investigate the materiality of consumer experiences in a technological context.

Methodology/approach – We have investigated materiality (as conceptualized by Miller) of experiences in online discussion forums in a community of video games enthusiasts. Grounded theory is elaborated from an ethnography mixing interviews and nonparticipative online observation. The focus is on consumers' perceptions of their constructions as subjects in relationship to the various objects and practices they face.

Findings – The process through which subjects are contingently constructed follows three intertwined logics. Each of these logics, namely (1) finding a position, (2) building “appropriation logics” and accomplishing practices, and (3) enacting meaning empowerments, is detailed in its specific contingencies and modalities.

Research limitations/implications – Contribution of this research relies mostly on findings from one online community.

Practical implications – This research opens new ways to understand technological consumption experiences as they are lived by consumers, and it allows for an understanding of structuration in experiences characterized beforehand by their indeterminacy.

Originality/value of chapter – This chapter belongs to the few ones that propose a methodological approach to tackle with the construction of the self in daily contingencies and with dynamic materiality. It also opens new ways to de-essentialize ordinary consumption activities.

Purpose

Most new media research focuses on behavior as a measure of engagement, while the psychological state of being occupied with its content has received little attention. This study examined news engagement beyond pure action observation by exploring young people’s psychological experiences with the news.

Design/methodology/approach

The study carried out a digital native’s survey on 212 people (18–28 years). The focus of the survey was on understanding individuals’ engagement with online news using affective and cognitive components. The authors compared the influence of each type of engagement on youth consumption of and attitudes toward online news.

Findings

The results of the hierarchical regression analysis showed that affective engagement can be a stronger predictor of online news consumption than cognitive engagement. While affective engagement significantly predicts positive attitudes toward online news, cognitive engagement had no significant effect.

Originality/value

These findings suggest that “engaging the heart” is more influential than “engaging the mind” in drawing young people to the news in today’s information environment. The study thus contributes to the understanding of the cognitive and emotional focus on news content and their importance in shaping young people’s expectations of online news. The findings from this study could have broader implications for future trends in online news consumption.

Abstract

Purpose

Esports (electronic sports) are watched by hundreds of millions of people every year and many esports have overtaken large traditional sports in spectator numbers. The purpose of this paper is to investigate spectating differences between online spectating of esports and live attendance of esports events. This is done in order to further understand attendance behaviour for a cultural phenomenon that is primarily mediated through internet technologies, and to be able to predict behavioural patterns.

Design/methodology/approach

This study employs the Motivation Scale for Sports Consumption to investigate the gratifications spectators derive from esports, both from attending tournaments physically and spectating online, in order to explore which factors may explain the esports spectating behaviour. The authors investigate how these gratifications lead into continued spectatorship online and offline, as well as the likelihood of recommending esports to others. The authors employ two data sets, one collected from online spectators (n=888), the other from live attendees (n=221).

Findings

The results indicate that online spectators rate drama, acquisition of knowledge, appreciation of skill, novelty, aesthetics and enjoyment of aggression higher than live attendees. Correspondingly, social interaction and physical attractiveness were rated higher by live attendees. Vicarious achievement and physical attractiveness positively predicted intention to attend live sports events while vicarious achievement and novelty positively predicted future online consumption of esports. Finally, vicarious achievement and novelty positively predicted recommending esports to others.

Originality/value

During the past years, esports has emerged as a new form of culture and entertainment, that is unique in comparison to other forms of entertainment, as it is almost fully reliant on computer-human interaction and the internet. This study offers one of the first attempts to compare online spectating and live attendance, in order to better understand the phenomenon and the consumers involved. As the growth of esports is predicted to continue in the coming years, further understanding of this phenomenon is pivotal for multiple stakeholder groups.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to explore consumer behaviour in the context of online fashion renting by applying the theory of reasoned action (TRA) to online fashion rental services and comparing how consumers perceive online fashion renting in terms of its ecological importance and compatibility with the cultures of the USA and China.

Design/methodology/approach

Quantitative research was conducted, and 646 data sets were collected from a research firm within three weeks. Prior to launching the main survey, back-and-forth translation processes were engaged for the Chinese survey. To test the proposed hypotheses, structural equation modelling (SEM) and PROCESS models were employed.

Findings

The results suggested that both online fashion renting attitudes and social norms positively influenced online fashion renting intentions. Meanwhile, online fashion renting attitudes were positively impacted by perceived compatibility and perceived ecological importance. The moderating effect of national difference was also examined. Specifically, the positive effect of perceived compatibility on online fashion renting attitudes was stronger in US consumers than in Chinese consumers.

Research limitations/implications

Although the findings of this study are valuable, comparing online fashion renting services in East Asian regions can be further explored, or comparing the USA with European countries may yield different results.

Originality/value

This study is one of the few to investigate how consumers engage in and perceive online fashion renting by comparing cultural differences between the USA and China. These two countries were selected because they are the leading countries in online shopping behaviour.
