Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the trends in the growth of online learning since 2002 and the change in the opinions and strategies of chief academic officers.

Design/methodology/approach

Annual surveys of chief academic officers from 2002‐2006 are summarized.

Findings

The paper finds that online courses and programs continue to grow at a rate of 20 percent or more per year and the quality of these courses continues to improve. Online education is part of the long‐term strategy of a majority of chief academic officers. Faculty lag in their acceptance of online courses.

Originality/value

This survey provides the first estimates of the number of online learners, online courses, and online programs. This is the first survey on the attitudes of chief academic officers towards online learning.

Abstract

Studies the effect of eight CD indexes on online searching through statistical data of online searching conducted for the faculty, graduate students and researchers before and after acquisition of CD indexes. Findings indicate considerable decline in online searching use owing to CD indexes saving a large amount of money. Discusses the impact of CD indexes on staffing in the reference department.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to compare the students enrolled to a three-year undergraduate, bachelor degree on Security of Computer Systems and Networks, offered in traditional, classroom fashion as well as online at the University of Milan (Italy). Its main purposes are to estimate the main characteristics of the two different student populations addressed (i.e. online vs classroom students) to understand if an online version of an already existing traditional university degree allows to extend the enrollment of students; and to evaluate the effectiveness of the e-learning approach adopted, comparing performance of the two student populations. The study aims to supply a significant case study, based on a real experience more than 10 years long.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper is based on the statistical interpretation of a huge amount of data, collected during the overall life of Sicurezza dei Sistemi e delle Reti Informatiche (SSRI) online, regarding student age, income, grades obtained in exams and after final dissertation and graduation time.

Findings

The paper allows to conclude that the online student population has very limited overlap with the classroom one, which means that the online version of an already existing degree can definitely enlarge the student enrollment and reach older students; and a carefully designed e-learning environment allows committed online students to obtain results comparable when not better than the ones of classroom students.

Research limitations/implications

The study refers to a single, specific degree in computer science and technology; thus, it may lack generalizability. Similar experiences in other areas could be useful.

Originality/value

This paper fulfills an identified need to study how e-learning can be successfully applied to already existing traditional university degrees.

Abstract

A survey was made in the Spring/Summer of 1981 by Online Review of users of online services in Europe. Questionnaires were sent out to some 7,000 individuals. Replies were requested, and only accepted, on an organisation basis; some 497 organisations in Europe were represented in the analysis. Questions were asked to establish the nature, size and areas of interest of the respondent organisations, to establish equipment used and services used, to provide indications of the future plans of online users and to establish a profile of the typical terminal user. When analysed, it was ascertained that the users surveyed had been the users of the major international, bibliographic online services.

Abstract

Faced with a relentless upsurge in the number of online searches from 1981 to 1982, the Head of Reference, Morisset Library and the Coordinator of Online Searching for the University of Ottawa ran, in June, 1982, a limited survey of staff allocation practices for online searching in 10 Canadian university libraries. The results of this survey and its implications for specific remedies to online staffing problems at the University of Ottawa are detailed. Recommendations for personnel allocation for online searching may find application in other university library systems in North America and elsewhere.

Abstract

Online auctions on the Internet have become popular. However, the communication techniques currently used in the online auction industry are primarily based on unicast technology. Unicast‐based online auctions suffer from unbearable delay of the communication between the auctioneer and bidders. Recently, multicast is changing the Internet environment, and is penetrating to the online auction field. This study describes a model for multicast‐based online auctions. The laboratory experiments demonstrate that the communication performance of multicast‐based online auctions is significantly better than that of traditional unicast‐based auctions.

Abstract

Purpose

Librarians need to educate users about online newspapers available in the library. The purpose of this paper is to survey the attitude of librarians towards online newspapers.

Design/methodology/approach

A questionnaire on the various aspects of online newspaper usage was prepared and was circulated to librarians working in various parts of the country through e‐mail.

Findings

It was found that librarians are making use of many features in the newspaper sites while offering library services.

Research limitations/implications

Since the questionnaire was circulated online an interaction with the librarians was not possible. Partial responses were eliminated from the study.

Social implications

Newspapers are a preferred source of information. Online newspapers from different parts of the world open a new window of knowledge to all. Librarians and administrators should engage in promoting online newspapers so that they will reach a wider array of users.

Originality/value

The attitude of librarians in India towards online newspapers has not received much attention up to now; such a study would help various firms, library science educators and organizations to rethink their usage of online newspapers.
