Man has been seeking an ideal existence for a very long time. In this existence, justice, love, and peace are no longer words, but actual experiences. How ever, with the American preemptive invasion and occupation of Afghanistan and Iraq and the subsequent prisoner abuse, such an existence seems to be farther and farther away from reality. The purpose of this work is to stop this dangerous trend by promoting justice, love, and peace through a change of the paradigm that is inconsistent with justice, love, and peace. The strong paradigm that created the strong nation like the U.S. and the strong man like George W. Bush have been the culprit, rather than the contributor, of the above three universal ideals. Thus, rather than justice, love, and peace, the strong paradigm resulted in in justice, hatred, and violence. In order to remove these three and related evils, what the world needs in the beginning of the third millenium is the weak paradigm. Through the acceptance of the latter paradigm, the golden mean or middle paradigm can be formulated, which is a synergy of the weak and the strong paradigm. In order to understand properly the meaning of these paradigms, however, some digression appears necessary.

Now that the Technician Education Council has published its Circular TEC 1/751, complete with impressive black bands, giving the projected timetable for the introduction of TEC certificate programmes, and the various curriculum development groups are having a temporary rest from their labours, it seems a good time to reflect on the OND in Technology and its relationship with TEC programmes.

Structural factors during Chinese and Japanese immigration and settlement processes required families to adapt in ways that altered traditional gender behaviors. This study examines how two factors – spousal immigration order and family economic structure – affected the gendered division of labor and how gender roles consequently were reconstructed for first and second generation Chinese Americans and Japanese Americans. These issues are investigated through secondary data analysis of 21 in‐depth interviews with daughters of Chinese and Japanese immigrants on the West Coast.

Traces China’s foreign debt policy from 1978 to the present and compares its short and long term debt structure with Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, the Phillippines and Thailand (i.e. five countries suffering from the Asian economic crisis). Points out that in the 1980s, when all six had high growth rates, China had a severe financial crisis while the others did not: a situation reversed in the 1990s. Compares four debt service capacity indicators for the six, using data from 1983‐1990 and 1991‐1997 to explore the factors causing financial crisis and shows that the ratio of short‐term to total debt is the most important indicator. Discusses the implications for the policies of developing countries and warns that “the hot‐bed for...financial crises still exists”.

Discusses the transfer of undertakings in the UK, referring to the Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment) Regulations of 1981, the Employment Rights Act 1996, and the Acquired Rights Directive 1977. Provides the raison d’etre of the Acquired Rights Directive and outlines how it was implemented in the UK. Talks about the confusing jurisprudence of the European and British courts, mentioning the European Court of Justice’s challenges to the directive, the 1994 proposals, amended 1997 proposals, the Commission’s memorandum of 1997 and the UK government’s consultation papers. Describes how the European Directive is applied and interpreted in relation to the Acquired Rights Directive and transfer of undertakings.
