Abstract
We focus on the determinants of the choice between international joint ventures and acquisitions when entering emerging countries. We empirically explore if subregional variation in the political regime matters for the entry mode decision of foreign investors. Based on an analysis of 151 foreign entries into Russia for the period 2002–2008, our results indicate that the entry mode choice is linked to regional variation in the level of democracy. Foreign entries in more democratic regions are more likely to take the form of joint ventures, and vice versa.

Abstract
This paper investigates the relationship between divestiture activity and subsequent acquisition deal-making. We argue that the divestiture activity of firms influences their acquisition behavior through corporate restructuring learning effects and enhanced strategic flexibility. These organizational spillovers affect not only the degree of risk acquirers are ready to take but also their ability to effectively negotiate with the target firm. We test the existence of organizational spillovers for an international sample of 4,795 acquirers for the period 1990–2008 and get support for our theoretical predictions.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to study unstructured-partial element equivalent circuit (PEEC) method for modelling electromagnetic regions with surface impedance condition (SIBC) is proposed. Two coupled circuits representations are used for solving both electric and/or magnetic effects in thin regions discretized by a finite element surface mesh. The formulation is applied in the context of low frequency problems with volumic magnetic media and coils. Non simply connected regions are treated with fundamental branch independent loop matrices coming from the circuit representation.
Design/methodology/approach
Because of the use of Whitney face elements, two coupled circuits representations are used for solving both electric and/or magnetic effects in thin regions discretized by a finite element surface mesh. The air is not meshed.
Findings
The new surface impedance formulation enables the modeling of volume conductive regions to efficiently simulate various devices with only a surface mesh.
Research limitations/implications
The propagation effects are not taken into account in the proposed formulation.
Originality/value
The formulation is original and is efficient for modeling non simply connected conductive regions with the use of SIBC. The unstructured PEEC SIBC formulation has been validated in presence of volume magnetic nonconductive region and compared with a SIBC FEM approach. The computational effort is considerably reduced in comparison with volume approaches.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to present a design method for induction machines including a three-phase damper winding for noise and vibrations reduction.
Design/methodology/approach
In the first part, the principle of the damper winding is recalled. The second part presents the iterative design method which is applied on a 4-kW pulse width modulation (PWM)-fed induction machine to study the impact of the additional winding on the geometry. In the third part, the finite-element method is used to validate the designed geometry and highlight the harmonic flux density reduction. Finally, some experimental results are given.
Findings
The study shows that the impact of the additional three-phase winding on the geometry and weight of the machine is low. Moreover, the proposed noise reduction method allows one to reduce the total noise level of a PWM-fed induction machine up to 8.5 dBA.
Originality/value
The originality of the paper concerns the design and characterization of a three-phase damper winding for a noiseless induction machine. The principle of this proposed noise reduction method is new and has been patented.

In this chapter, we examine the notion of ethnic diversity with a view to explore Europe-wide differences in defining and managing ethnic diversity and equality. When compared to gender diversity, ethnic diversity does not enjoy similar level of success in Europe. Our analyses show that this is due to the fact that ethnicity and ethnic categories are national. In fact, there are different levels of discussion on ethnicity, where the debate is limited due to historical, cultural and legal differences.

Abstract
In this chapter, we will review the history, deregulation, policy reforms, and airline consolidations and mergers of the Chinese airline industry. The measurement of airline competition in China’s domestic market will also be discussed. Although air deregulation is still ongoing, the Chinese airline industry has become a market-driven business subject to some mild regulations. Then, we will review the impressive development of the high-speed rail (HSR) network in China and its effects on the domestic civil aviation market. In general, previous studies have found that the introduction of HSR services has a significant negative impact on airfare and air travel demand in China. The rapidly expanding network of HSR has important policy implications for Chinese airlines.
