Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore the sensitive parameters affecting the friction resistance of sliding bearings under different interface slip conditions and the influence of the texture position of circular pits on the friction force of sliding bearings.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the mechanical equilibrium equation and Newton's viscous fluid mechanics formula and wedge oil film model, the calculation model of sliding bearing friction resistance under interface slip state is established, and the influence of interface slip on friction resistance under different slip conditions is analyzed by means of ANSYS. Friction simulation model of circular pit textured journal bearing under different interface slip conditions.

Findings

The friction resistance of bearings is mainly determined by journal linear velocity, oil film slip ratio, pressure of inlet and outlet of bearings, oil film thickness and bearing capacity. When both the upper and lower surfaces of the oil film slip, the friction resistance decreases significantly, which is only 4-17 per cent of that without slip. And the friction force of the texture model of circular pit at the exit is better than that at the entrance and the middle of the pit.

Originality/value

Relevant research results will lay a new theoretical foundation for friction reduction and optimization design of sliding bearings.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of fluid–structure interaction in micro-scale on the performance of the hydrostatic spindle and improve the analysis precision of the dynamic performance of hydrostatic spindle.

Design/methodology/approach

Dynamic analysis of hydrostatic spindle before and after fluid–structure interaction is carried out according to stiffness and damping performance of the bearing, which demonstrates that the natural frequency and peak response of the spindle are increased in the micro-scale.

Findings

It is concluded from the simulation and experimental results that there is micro-scale effect in the actual operation of the spindle system and slippage exists in the oil film flow. The error between the modal detection result and the theoretical value is within 10 per cent, which also verifies the correctness of the above conclusions.

Originality/value

This paper analyzes the changes of the bearing performance parameters at macro- and micro-scale, which present the influence of the static and dynamic performance of the spindle in the micro-scale.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the mechanical properties of aerostatic guideway taking the structural deformation into account, and further improve the calculation method of guideway.

Design/methodology/approach

A theoretical model of fluid-structure interaction for the numerical simulation was established and mechanical properties of the aerostatic guideway with porous restrictors were solved based on computational fluid dynamics. The deformation law of the guideway with different materials and gas-film thicknesses was revealed, and its static and dynamic characteristic curves were obtained.

Findings

The results indicate that ceramics as the material of guideways exhibit good applicability due to the small deformation, the quick dynamic response and the relatively light weight. The rational initial gas-film of guideway is recommended.

Originality/value

The present work can provide ideas for the design and optimization of aerostatic guideways.

THE background to the importance of Ling Dynamic Systems (LDS) in the testing field can be found in the 1950s with the development of amplifiers and dynamic shakers. Although LDS itself was not formed until 1970, various technologies were being exploited in vibration testing which were put to good use in the company which is known worldwide for the manufacture of these systems. It has operated since that time as a wholly British‐owned organisation with a Paris office which was opened a short while afterwards. The company operates in the USA through its own subsidiary, LDS Inc, which has achieved a high growth rate in this market.

Abstract

Purpose

After more than a century of agreement with the postulate of non-slip condition (adhesion to the wall), the study of fluid-solid boundary conditions has shown renewed interest over the past two decades. Although numerous studies have not yet been arrived to a complete description of slip phenomena, however, it appears that the influence of wetting and/or surface roughness results in a weak interaction between fluid and solid; thus, the presence of the slip phenomenon is observed at the fluid-solid interface. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the presence of the slip phenomenon at the lubricated piston skirt-cylinder contact.

Design/methodology/approach

For this proposal, a modified Reynolds equation and operating characteristics are determined by taking into account the slip conditions at the interface between oil-film and entire cylinder surface.

Findings

The findings indicate that the operating characteristics are strongly influenced when the slip conditions are taken into account at the interface between oil-film and cylinder surface. The friction force and dissipated power might be reduced to improve diesel engine performances.

Originality/value

Various research studies have been conducted to model the slip phenomenon in different lubricated contacts over the past two decades. However, there are no studies available concerning the piston-cylinder system.

Abstract

Purpose

Pipeline maintenance technology using smart isolation tool is becoming more widely used in the global scope. This paper aims to investigate the effects of parameters on the frictional resistance between the slip and pipeline and the frictional characteristics under different lubrication films.

Design/methodology/approach

An experimental platform consisting of slip, pipeline and data acquisition system was developed, wherein the slip slips on the pipeline under different normal forces and velocities. In addition, three lubrication conditions, namely, dry wall, oil liquid and black powder on the wall, were investigated to study the effects of lubrications on the frictional coefficient and characteristics.

Findings

Research results indicate that the frictional force and coefficient were sensitive to normal force. The crude oil affected the frictional coefficient within a certain range of normal force, and the black powder enhanced the surface roughness in the natural gas pipeline. However, velocity had no effect on them. In addition, different contact behaviors could be observed from the frictional coefficient curves.

Originality/value

In this paper, the effects of normal force and velocity on frictional resistance of sliding slip during decelerating process in pipeline were investigated, and the effects of lubrication films on frictional characteristics were also revealed. The research results are of great value to improve the prediction accuracy of smart isolation tool, and also provide a guiding significance for the development of maintenance operation in pipelines.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to better understand the dynamic characteristics of an aerostatic slider caused by a gas film, and the impact of a gas film slip on the load capacity, stiffness and dynamic stiffness of the guideway is studied.

Design/methodology/approach

In theory, the Navier velocity slip model is introduced for fluid continuous flow equation to calculate the flow state in the micro-state; in experimental techniques, the stiffness experiment of the guideway by digital inductance meter is performed under different loadings, which are used to inspect the simulation results.

Findings

The maximum value of bearing stiffness in the condition of considering that the gas slip is larger than that of not considering the gas slip, and the gas film clearance of maximum bearing stiffness in the condition of considering the gas slip is less than that of not considering the gas slip. This is verified by the measurement of the stiffness of the guideway.

Originality/value

This paper mostly studies the influence of the gas slip effects on the performance of the aerostatic guideway, which will make a certain contribution to the guideway stability and the machining precision of the machine tool.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to present the discrepancy in oil film distribution in reciprocating motion experimentally with zero entraining velocity (ZEV) on a conventional ball-disk test rig with oil lubrication.

Design/methodology/approach

Driven independently by two individual servomotors, a steel ball and a sapphire disc move at equal speed but in opposite directions in a triangle wave. The oil film images between the ball and the disc were recorded by a camera. After the experiments, the mid-section film thickness was evaluated by using a dichromatic interference intensity modulation approach.

Findings

The dimpled oil film in transient condition is shallower than that at steady state with the same load and velocities, and the transient dimple depth decreases with the decrease of time. The increase of the applied load offers a beneficial effect on lubrication. Boundary slippage happens in ZEV reciprocating motion. The slippage at the interface is related to the transient effect and applied load.

Originality/value

This study reveals the significant difference of the oil film variation in ZEV reciprocating motion, especially the complex boundary slippage at the interface of the oil and the sapphire disc.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate lubricant film-forming capability of oil-impregnated sintered material in highly loaded non-conformal contacts. This self-lubrication mechanism is well described in lightly loaded conformal contacts such as journal bearings; however, only a little has been published about the application to highly loaded contacts under elastohydrodynamic lubrication regime (EHL).

Design/methodology/approach

Thin film colorimetric interferometry is used to describe the effect of different operating conditions on lubricant film formation in line contacts.

Findings

Under fully flooded conditions, the effect of porous structure can be mainly traced back to the different elastic properties. When the contact is lubricated only by oil bleeding from the oil-impregnated sintered material, starvation is likely to occur. It is indicated that lubricant film thickness is mainly governed by oil bleeding capacity. The relationship between oil starvation parameters corresponds well with classic starved EHL theory.

Practical implications

To show practical, relevant limitations of the considered self-lubrication system, time tests were conducted. The findings indicate that EHL contact with oil-impregnated sintered material may provide about 40 per cent of fully flooded film thickness.

Originality/value

For the first time, the paper presents results on the EHL film-forming capability of oil-impregnated sintered material by measuring the lubricant film thickness directly. The present paper identifies the phenomena involved, which is necessary for the understanding of the behavior of this complex tribological system.
