Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the influence of structural parameters of oil groove (such as central angle number, depth and so on) on pressure, flow, load capacity and transmitted torque between friction pairs of hydro-viscous clutch.

Design/methodology/approach

According to the working process of friction pairs of hydro-viscous clutch, mathematical models of hydrodynamic load capacity and torque transmitted by the oil film were built based on viscosity-temperature property. Then analytical solutions of pressure, flow, load capacity and transmitted torque were obtained; effects of central angle of oil groove zone and friction contact zone, oil film thickness, number of oil grooves on pressure, flow, load capacity and torque were studied theoretically.

Findings

The research found that the central angle of oil groove zone, number of oil grooves and oil groove depth have similar effects on flow, which means that with the increase of central angle, number or depth of oil grooves, the flow also increases; pressure in friction contact zone and oil groove zone drops along radial direction, whereas its value in oil groove zone is higher. With the increase of the central angle of oil groove zone, pressure in friction contact zone and friction contact zone rises, and the load capacity increases, whereas the transmitted torque drops. Number of oil grooves has little effect on load capacity. When the oil film thickness increases, its flow increases accordingly, whereas the pressure, load capacity and transmitted torque drops. Meanwhile, the transmitted torque decreases with the increase of number of oil grooves, whereas the oil groove depth nearly has no effects on transmitted torque.

Originality/value

In this paper, mathematical models of hydrodynamic load capacity and torque transmitted by oil film were built based on viscosity-temperature property in the working process of hydro-viscous clutch, and their analytical solutions were obtained; effects of structural parameters of oil groove on transmission characteristics of hydro-viscous clutch based on viscosity-temperature property were revealed. The research results are of great value to the theory development of hydro-viscous drive technology, the design of high-power hydro-viscous clutch and relative control strategy.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to reveal the tribological performance of the textured rolling bearing.

Design/methodology/approach

In the present study, the oil film pressure distribution and load capacity analysis method are established, which integrate the micro-texture model and Hydrodynamic lubrication (HL) methods. The tribological performances of the textured rolling bearing under the various working condition, texture dimension and texture type are investigated systematically.

Findings

The results show that the oil film load capacity increases with the increase in the texture size. As the texture depth increases, the oil film load capacity increases first and then decreases, and then the load capacity is the largest at the texture depth range of 3 to 5 µm. In addition, the oil film load capacity of the matching pairs, such as Si4N3-Si4N3, GCr15- Si4N3 and GCr15-GCr15 are compared; the results show that the cases of using ceramic material can improve oil film load capacity of textured rolling bearing.

Originality/value

The current manuscript can be useful for supporting the reliability and life research of textured rolling bearing.

– The purpose of this paper is to reveal the effect of starting time on hydro-viscous drive speed regulating start.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to reveal the effect of starting time on hydro-viscous drive speed regulating start.

Design/methodology/approach

The modified transient Reynolds equation, thermal energy equation and temperature–viscosity equation were solved simultaneously by using finite element method. And then variations of the oil film load capacity, variations of temperature and variations of the torque generated by the oil film during the starting process were obtained.

Findings

The results show that during the starting process, both the oil film load capacity and the temperature show an upward trend, the torque increases during the beginning period and then decreases during the latter part of the starting process. When the starting time is less than 60 s, variations of the oil film load capacity and temperature show fluctuations, which decrease with the starting time. For any output speed, the corresponding oil film load capacity, temperature and torque decrease with the starting time, and the decreasing amplitude also decreases with the starting time.

Originality/value

This paper indicates that the starting time can be set to 60-90 s to obtain a perfect starting process. The simulation results are verified by the speed regulating start experiments. Research findings of this work provide theoretical basis for the design and practical application of the hydro-viscous drive equipments.

Abstract

Purpose

Friction pairs of the hydro-viscous drive speed regulating start device should be designed based on the rated torque. To obtain design basis of the rated torque of the hydro-viscous drive speed regulating start device, studies on effect of torque ratio (a ratio of the load torque to the rated torque) on speed regulating start were carried out theoretically and experimentally.

Design/methodology/approach

Under different torque ratio, the modified Reynolds, the thermal energy and the viscosity-temperature equations were solved simultaneously by using finite element method to reveal variation laws of the oil film load capacity and torque transmission during the starting process. Then, speed regulating start experiments were carried out to study the following performance of the output speed.

Findings

The results show that oil film thickness decreases with the increase of the torque ratio; when oil film thickness is less than 0.05 mm, oil film temperature increases rapidly with the decrease of oil film thickness, which eventually deteriorates performance of the speed regulating start; when the torque ratio decreases to about 0.3, output speed shows a better following performance.

Originality/value

It indicates that, to acquire a better speed regulating start, the rated torque of the hydro-viscous drive speed regulating start device should not be less than three times of the load torque. Achievements of this work provide theoretical basis for optimal design of the friction pairs of the hydro-viscous drive speed regulating start device.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to reveal the mechanism of effect of surface groove on speed‐regulating start.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper investigates numerically and analytically the torque transfer and load capacity of oil film between separator and friction disc with grooves commonly used at present by solving simultaneous equations: modified Reynolds, energy, and temperature‐viscosity equations.

Findings

The results show friction discs with wider and deeper groove are not suitable for speed‐regulating start. To improve performance of speed‐regulating start, distribution and size of surface groove should be designed to obtain ascending trend of oil film load capacity during startup process.

Originality/value

This paper reveals the mechanism of effect of surface groove on speed‐regulating start and facilitates the conceptual design of speed‐regulating start control system.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the effects of irregular groove textures on the friction and wear performance of sliding contact surfaces. These textures possess multiple depths and asymmetrical features. To optimize the irregular groove texture structure of the sliding contact surface, an adaptive genetic algorithm was used for research and optimization purposes.

Design/methodology/approach

Using adaptive genetic algorithm as an optimization tool, numerical simulations were conducted on surface textures by establishing a dimensionless form of the Reynolds equation and setting appropriate boundary conditions. An adaptive genetic algorithm program in MATLAB was established. Genetic iterative methods were used to calculate the optimal texture structure. Genetic individuals were selected through fitness comparison. The depth of the groove texture is gradually adjusted through genetic crossover, mutation, and mutation operations. The optimal groove structure was ultimately obtained by comparing the bearing capacity and pressure of different generations of micro-convex bodies.

Findings

After about 100 generations of iteration, the distribution of grooved textures became relatively stable, and after about 320 generations, the depth and distribution of groove textures reached their optimal structure. At this stage, irregular texture structures can support more loads by forming oil films. Compared with regular textures, the friction coefficient of irregular textures decreased by nearly 47.01%, while the carrying capacity of lubricating oil films increased by 54.57%. The research results show that irregular texture structures have better lubrication characteristics and can effectively improve the friction performance of component surfaces.

Originality/value

Surface textures can enhance the friction and lubrication performance of metal surfaces, improving the mechanical performance and lifespan of components. However, surface texture processing is challenging, as it often requires multiple experimental comparisons to determine the optimal texture structure, resulting in high trial-and-error costs. By using an adaptive genetic algorithm as an optimization tool, the optimal surface groove structure can be obtained through simulation and modeling, effectively saving costs in the process.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aim to take the ship shaft stern bearing as the research object, and studies the influence of journal axial vibration on bearing dynamic characteristics under different misaligned angles and rotation speeds.

Design/methodology/approach

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and harmonic excitation method were used to build bearing unstable lubrication model, and the dynamic mesh technology was used in calculation.

Findings

The results indicate that journal axial vibration has a significant effect on bearing dynamic characteristics, like maximum oil film pressure, bearing stiffness and damping coefficients, and the effect is positively correlated with journal misaligned angle. The effect of shaft rotation speed and journal axial vibration on bearing dynamics characteristics are independent; they have no coupling. Bearing axial stiffness is mainly affected by the journal axial displacement, bearing axial damping is mainly affected by journal axial velocity and they are positively correlated with the misaligned angle. The influence of rotational speed on bearing axial stiffness and axial damping is not obvious.

Originality/value

This paper establishes the bearing dynamic model by CFD and harmonic excitation method with consideration of cavitation effect and analyzing the influence of journal axial vibration on the dynamic characteristics. The results are benefit to the design of ship propulsion shaft and the selection of stern bearing. Also, they are of great significance to improve the operation stability of the shaft bearing system and the vitality of the ship.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to reveal the lubrication performance of textured roller bearings under various texture size, texture depth, texture types and slip.

Design/methodology/approach

In the present study, the improved thermal elastohydrodynamic lubrication method based on the surface texturing of the textured roller bearings is proposed, and then the effect of texture size, texture depth, texture types and slip on the contact pressure, film thickness and temperature distribution are analyzed systematically.

Findings

The results show that the pressure decreases and the film thickness increases on the contact area because of the surface texturing. The temperature increases first and then decreases as the texture size increases, and then the temperature increases as the texture depth and the slip increases. Compared to circle and square texture, cross texture can obviously decrease the temperature on the contact area. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified.

Originality/value

This study can help to reduce friction and wear of textured roller bearings.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to reveal the characteristics of hydrodynamic load capacity and torque transferred by oil film with variable viscosity, and the effect of groove number, width and depth on the hydrodynamic load capacity and torque transfer.

Design/methodology/approach

The radial temperature of friction pair and viscosity of YLA‐N32 hydraulic oil were measured through experiments, and a viscosity‐diameter expression was deduced using polynomial fitting method. Analytical expressions for hydrodynamic load capacity and torque of the oil film were deduced based on hydrodynamic lubrication theory.

Findings

The investigation shows the hydrodynamic load capacity and transferred torque with variable viscosity are much less than that with constant viscosity. Load capacity increases with the increase of groove depth which is the most significant influence factor, while it has the least influence on torque. Groove width has great influence on load capacity and torque. The load capacity increases with the increase of groove width; contrarily, torque decreases with the increase of groove width. Groove number has little influence on load capacity, while it has great influence on torque. The torque decreases with the increase of groove number.

Originality/value

In this paper, analytical solutions for hydrodynamic load capacity and torque of the oil film with variable viscosity are deduced. The paper reveals the relationship between hydrodynamic load capacity, torque transfer and groove number, width and depth.

Abstract

Purpose

Rotational speed and load-carrying capacity are two mutual coupling factors which affect high precision and stable operation of a hydrostatic thrust bearing. The purpose of this paper is to study reasonable matching relationship between the rotational speed and the load-carrying capacity.

Design/methodology/approach

A mathematical model of relationship between the rotational speed and the load-carrying capacity of the hydrostatic bearing with double-rectangle recess is set up on the basis of the tribology theory and the lubrication theory, and the load and rotational speed characteristics of an oil film temperature field and a pressure field in the hydrostatic bearing are analyzed, reasonable matching relationship between the rotational speed and the load-carrying capacity is deduced and a verification experiment is conducted.

Findings

By increasing the rotational speed, the oil film temperature increases, the average pressure decreases and the load-carrying capacity decreases. By increasing the load-carrying capacity, the oil film temperature and the average pressure increases and the rotational speed decreases; corresponding certain reasonable matching values are available.

Originality/value

The load-carrying capacity can be increased and the rotational speed improved by means of reducing the friction area of the oil recess by using low-viscosity lubricating oil and adding more oil film clearance; but, the stiffness of the hydrostatic bearing decreases.
