Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to propose a novel nonlocal fractal calculus scheme dedicated to the analysis of fractal electrical circuit, namely, the generalized nonlocal fractal calculus.
Design/methodology/approach
For being generalized, an arbitrary kernel function has been adopted. The condition on order has been derived so that it is not related to the γ-dimension of the fractal set. The fractal Laplace transforms of our operators have been derived.
Findings
Unlike the traditional power law kernel-based nonlocal fractal calculus operators, ours are generalized, consistent with the local fractal derivative and use higher degree of freedom. As intended, the proposed nonlocal fractal calculus is applicable to any kind of fractal electrical circuit. Thus, it has been found to be a more efficient tool for the fractal electrical circuit analysis than any previous fractal set dedicated calculus scheme.
Originality/value
A fractal calculus scheme that is more efficient for the fractal electrical circuit analysis than any previous ones has been proposed in this work.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this article is to investigate the propagation characteristics (such as particle motion, attenuation and phase velocity) of a Rayleigh wave in a nonlocal generalized thermoelastic media.
Design/methodology/approach
The bulk waves are represented with Helmholtz potentials. The stress-free insulated and isothermal plane surfaces are taken into account. Rayleigh wave dispersion relation has been established and is found to be complex. Due to the presence of radicals, the dispersion equation is continuously computed as a complicated irrational expression. The dispersion equation is then converted into a polynomial equation that can be solved numerically for precise complex roots. The extra zeros in this polynomial equation are eliminated to yield the dispersion equation’s roots. These routes are then filtered for inhomogeneous wave propagation that decays with depth. To perform numerical computations, MATLAB software is used.
Findings
In this medium, only one mode of Rayleigh wave exists at both isothermal and insulated boundaries. The thermal factors of nonlocal generalized thermoelastic materials significantly influence the particle motion, attenuation and phase velocity of the Rayleigh wave.
Originality/value
Numerical examples are taken to examine how the thermal characteristics of materials affect the existing Rayleigh wave’s propagation characteristics. Graphical analysis is used to evaluate the behavior of particle motion (such as elliptical) both inside and at the isothermal (or insulated) flat surface of the medium under consideration.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to combine Eringen’s micromorphic and nonlocal theories and thus develop a comprehensive size-dependent beam model capable of capturing the effects of micro-rotational/stretch/shear degrees of freedom of material particles and nonlocality simultaneously.
Design/methodology/approach
To consider nonlocal influences, both integral (original) and differential versions of Eringen’s nonlocal theory are used. Accordingly, integral nonlocal-micromorphic and differential nonlocal-micromorphic beam models are formulated using matrix-vector relations, which are suitable for implementing in numerical approaches. A finite element (FE) formulation is also provided to solve the obtained equilibrium equations in the variational form. Timoshenko micro-/nano-beams with different boundary conditions are selected as the problem under study whose static bending is addressed.
Findings
It was shown that the paradox related to the clamped-free beam is resolved by the present integral nonlocal-micromorphic model. It was also indicated that the nonlocal effect captured by the integral model is more pronounced than that by its differential counterpart. Moreover, it was revealed that by the present approach, the softening and hardening effects, respectively, originated from the nonlocal and micromorphic theories can be considered simultaneously.
Originality/value
Developing a hybrid size-dependent Timoshenko beam model including micromorphic and nonlocal effects. Considering the nonlocal effect based on both Eringen’s integral and differential models proposing an FE approach to solve the bending problem, and resolving the paradox related to nanocantilever.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to present a new approach to solve nonlocal boundary value problems of linear and nonlinear first‐ and second‐order differential equations subject to nonlocal conditions of integral type.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors first transform the given nonlocal boundary value problems of first‐ and second‐order differential equations into local boundary value problems of second‐ and third‐order differential equations, respectively. Then a modified Adomian decomposition method is applied, which permits convenient resolution of these equations.
Findings
The new technique, as presented in this paper in extending the applicability of the Adomian decomposition method, has been shown to be very efficient for solving nonlocal boundary value problems of linear and nonlinear first‐ and second‐order differential equations subject to nonlocal conditions of integral type.
Originality/value
The paper presents a new solution algorithm for the nonlocal boundary value problems of linear and nonlinear first‐ and second‐order differential equations subject to nonlocal conditions of integral type.

Abstract
Purpose
It has been revealed that application of the differential form of Eringen’s nonlocal elasticity theory to some cases (e.g. cantilevers) leads to paradoxical results, and recourse must be made to the integral version of Eringen’s nonlocal model. The purpose of this paper, within the framework of integral form of Eringen’s nonlocal theory, is to study the bending behavior of nanoscale plates with various boundary conditions using the isogeometric analysis (IGA).
Design/methodology/approach
The shear deformation effect is taken into account according to the Mindlin plate theory, and the minimum total potential energy principle is utilized in order to derive the governing equations. The relations are obtained in the matrix-vector form which can be easily employed in IGA or finite element analysis. For the comparison purpose, the governing equations are also derived based on the differential nonlocal model and are then solved via IGA. Comparisons are made between the predictions of integral nonlocal model, differential nonlocal model and local (classical) model.
Findings
The bending analysis of nanoplates under some kinds of edge supports indicates that using the differential model leads to paradoxical results (decreasing the maximum deflection with increasing the nonlocal parameter), whereas the results of integral model are consistent.
Originality/value
A new nonlocal formulation is developed for the IGA of Mindlin nanoplates. The nonlocal effects are captured based on the integral model of nonlocal elasticity. The formulation is developed in matrix-vector form which can be readily used in finite element method. Comparisons are made between the results of differential and integral models for the bending problem. The proposed integral model is capable of resolving the paradox appeared in the results of differential model.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to present a nonlocal gradient plasticity damage model to demonstrate the crack pattern of a body, in an elastic and plastic state, in terms of damage law. The main objective of this paper is to reconsider the nonlocal theory by including the material in-homogeneity caused by damage and plasticity. The nonlocal nature of the strain field provides a regularization to overcome the analytical and computational problems induced by softening constitutive laws. Such an approach requires C1 continuous approximation. This is achieved by using an isogeometric approximation (IGA). Numerical examples in one and two dimensions are presented.
Design/methodology/approach
In this work, the authors propose a nonlocal elastic plastic damage model. The nonlocal nature of the strain field provides a regularization to overcome the analytical and computational problems induced by softening constitutive laws. An additive decomposition of strains in to elastic and inelastic or plastic part is considered. To obtain stable damage, a higher gradient order is considered for an integral equation, which is obtained by the Taylor series expansion of the local inelastic strain around the point under consideration. The higher-order continuity of nonuniform rational B-splines (NURBS) functions used in isogeometric analysis are adopted here to implement in a numerical scheme. To demonstrate the validity of the proposed model, numerical examples in one and two dimensions are presented.
Findings
The proposed nonlocal elastic plastic damage model is able to predict the damage in an accurate manner. The numerical results are mesh independent. The nonlocal terms add a regularization to the model especially for strain softening type of materials. The consideration of nonlocality in inelastic strains is more meaningful to the physics of damage. The use of IGA framework and NURBS basis functions add to the nonlocal nature in approximations of the field variables.
Research limitations/implications
The method can be extended to 3D. The model does not consider the effect of temperature and the dissipation of energy due to temperature. The method needs to be implemented for more real practical problems and compare with experimental work. This is an ongoing work.
Practical implications
The nonlocal models are suitable for predicting damage in quasi brittle materials. The use of elastic plastic theories allows to capture the inelastic deformations more accurately.
Social implications
The nonlocal models are suitable for predicting damage in quasi brittle materials. The use of elastic plastic theories allows to capture the inelastic deformations more accurately.
Originality/value
The present work includes the formulation and implementation of a nonlocal damage plasticity model using an isogeometric discretization, which is the novel contribution of this paper. An implicit gradient enhancement is considered to the inelastic strain. During inelastic deformations, the proposed strain tensor partitioning allows the use of a distinct potential surface and distinct failure criterion for both damage and plasticity models. The use of NURBS basis functions adds to more nonlocality in the approximation.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper addresses a significant research gap in the study of Rayleigh surface wave propagation within a piezoelectric medium characterized by piezoelectric properties, thermal effects and voids. Previous research has often overlooked the crucial aspects related to voids. This study aims to provide analytical solutions for Rayleigh waves propagating through a medium consisting of a nonlocal piezo-thermo-elastic material with voids under the Moore–Gibson–Thompson thermo-elasticity theory with memory dependencies.
Design/methodology/approach
The analytical solutions are derived using a wave-mode method, and roots are computed from the characteristic equation using the Durand–Kerner method. These roots are then filtered based on the decay condition of surface waves. The analysis pertains to a medium subjected to stress-free and isothermal boundary conditions.
Findings
Computational simulations are performed to determine the attenuation coefficient and phase velocity of Rayleigh waves. This investigation goes beyond mere calculations and examines particle motion to gain deeper insights into Rayleigh wave propagation. Furthermore, this investigates how kernel function and nonlocal parameters influence these wave phenomena.
Research limitations/implications
The results of this study reveal several unique cases that significantly contribute to the understanding of Rayleigh wave propagation within this intricate material system, particularly in the presence of voids.
Practical implications
This investigation provides valuable insights into the synergistic dynamics among piezoelectric constituents, void structures and Rayleigh wave propagation, enabling advancements in sensor technology, augmented energy harvesting methodologies and pioneering seismic monitoring approaches.
Originality/value
This study formulates a novel governing equation for a nonlocal piezo-thermo-elastic medium with voids, highlighting the significance of Rayleigh waves and investigating the impact of memory.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to analyse the behaviour of plane waves within a nonlocal transversely isotropic visco-thermoelastic medium having variable thermal conductivity.
Design/methodology/approach
The concept of enunciation is used in the generalized theory of thermoelasticity in accordance with the Green–Lindsay and Eringen’s nonlocal elasticity models. The linear viscoelasticity model developed by Kelvin–Voigt is used to characterize the viscoelastic properties of transversely isotropic materials.
Findings
It has been noticed that three plane waves, which are coupled together, travel through the medium at three different speeds. The derivation of reflection coefficients and energy ratios for reflected waves is carried out by incorporating suitable boundary conditions. Numerical computations are performed for the amplitude ratios, phase speeds and energy partition and displayed in graphical form.
Originality/value
The outcomes of the numerical simulation demonstrate that the amplitude ratios are significantly influenced by variable thermal conductivity, nonlocal parameters and viscosity. It is further observed from the plots that the phase speeds in a transversely isotropic medium depend on the angle of incidence. In addition, it has been established that the energy is preserved during the reflection phenomenon.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to study the transient thermoelastic interactions in a nonlocal rotating magneto-thermoelastic medium with temperature-dependent properties. Three-phase-lag (TPL) model of generalized thermoelasticity is employed to study the problem. An initial magnetic field with constant intensity acts parallel to the bounding plane. Therefore, Maxwell's theory of electrodynamics has been effectively introduced and the expression for Lorentz's force is obtained with the help of modified Ohm's law.
Design/methodology/approach
The normal mode technique has been adopted to solve the resulting non-dimensional coupled field equations to obtain the expressions of physical field variables.

For uniformly distributed thermal load, normal displacement, temperature distribution and stress components are calculated numerically with the help of MATLAB software for a copper material and the results are illustrated graphically. Some particular cases of interest are also deduced from the present study.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to present the analyses of electrical circuits with arbitrary source terms defined on middle b cantor set by means of nonlocal fractal calculus and to evaluate the appropriateness of such unconventional calculus.
Design/methodology/approach
The nonlocal fractal integro-differential equations describing RL, RC, LC and RLC circuits with arbitrary source terms defined on middle b cantor set have been formulated and solved by means of fractal Laplace transformation. Numerical simulations based on the derived solutions have been performed where an LC circuit has been studied by means of Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalisms. The nonlocal fractal calculus-based Lagrangian and Hamiltonian equations have been derived and the local fractal calculus-based ones have been revisited.
Findings
The author has found that the LC circuit defined on a middle b cantor set become a physically unsound system due to the unreasonable associated Hamiltonian unless the local fractal calculus has been applied instead.
Originality/value
For the first time, the nonlocal fractal calculus-based analyses of electrical circuits with arbitrary source terms have been performed where those circuits with order higher than 1 have also been analyzed. For the first time, the nonlocal fractal calculus-based Lagrangian and Hamiltonian equations have been proposed. The revised contradiction free local fractal calculus-based Lagrangian and Hamiltonian equations have been presented. A comparison of local and nonlocal fractal calculus in terms of Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalisms have been made where a drawback of the nonlocal one has been pointed out.
