Abstract

THE LATEST CENTRAL TRAINING COUNCIL REPORT ON THE Training of Managers and the BIM's Mant Report have now said what many of us have been saying for years. The most effective training for a manager is that given by an imaginative boss who, with careful regard for his subordinate's needs in knowledge, skill and attitude for the job delegated to him, designs and tutors through a properly controlled spell of training and follows this up with continuous and structured counselling and challenging assignments once the manager is performing his job. From this concept some of us have developed methods of identifying, programming and evaluating schemes of Do‐it‐Yourself management development with the aim of getting the best results from what can otherwise be a hit‐and‐miss affair. In other words, we have worked to help those bosses to whom personal tutoring does not come naturally, to act on their training responsibilities effectively.

Trade Associations are in an excellent position to influence training within an industry or a part of an industry. With the advent of the Industry Training Boards the general tendency has been for trade associations to pass their training responsibilities over completely to the ITB. They saw their main advantage in securing one of the employer seats on the training board itself and then leaving the initiative to the ITB. At its weakest this action could be seen as a rather negative watchdog exercise. There is another way and it is far more effective and positive. It is this other way that NOEL THOMPSON writes about in this article.

Over the past several decades, scholars and universities have made efforts to increase the retention of students in higher education, but graduation rates remain low. Whereas two-thirds of high school graduates attend college, fewer than half graduate. The likelihood of graduation decreases even more for Black, Latino, American Indian, and low-income students, who have a 12–15% lower chance of earning their degree. The importance of psychosocial adjustment to student persistence has received relatively less attention than academic and social integration. Racial/ethnic minority students face unique challenges to psychosocial adjustment in college, including prejudice and discrimination, unwelcoming campus environments, underrepresentation, and a lack of culturally appropriate counseling resources. The current chapter will discuss the impact of these challenges on the persistence, academic success, and health of racial/ethnic minority students, and strategies that universities can employ to create inclusive policies, resources and campus environments that empower students of color and maximize their success.

Abstract

Justice rules are standards that serve as criteria for formulating fairness judgments. Though justice rules play a role in the organizational justice literature, they have seldom been the subject of analysis in their own right. To address this limitation, we first consider three meta-theoretical dualities that are highlighted by justice rules – the distinction between justice versus fairness, indirect versus direct measurement, and normative versus descriptive paradigms. Second, we review existing justice rules and organize them into four types of justice: distributive (e.g., equity, equality), procedural (e.g., voice, consistent treatment), interpersonal (e.g., politeness, respectfulness), and informational (e.g., candor, timeliness). We also emphasize emergent rules that have not received sufficient research attention. Third, we consider various computation models purporting to explain how justice rules are assessed and aggregated to form fairness judgments. Fourth and last, we conclude by reviewing research that enriches our understanding of justice rules by showing how they are cognitively processed. We observe that there are a number of influences on fairness judgments, and situations exist in which individuals do not systematically consider justice rules.

In his preface Thompson argues that structural, sociological and ideological aspects of the economic “environment” foreclosed on socialism during the period in question. The structural aspect was the increased globalisation of economic activity; the sociological was the “triumph of possessive individualism and the uncritical celebration of private as against social consumption” (p. vi); and the ideological was the ascendancy of the nostrums of the New Right. Given the importance attached to these “environmental” forces one might have expected the author to organise his argument by discussing how and why these forces came to be all-powerful in the last quarter of the 20th century.
