Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to evaluate Iranian newspapers' web sites based on the criteria obtained from Alexa Search Engine using correspondence analysis.

Design/methodology/approach

A total of 55 newspaper web sites are selected from Iranian Magazines Information Bank (Magiran.com), the number of which, after investigating the web sites one by one, due to their print prevention, cessation or no coverage by Alexa, is decreased to 24 web sites.

Findings

Based on data obtained from Alexa, Iran newspaper has the highest traffic rank and the largest number of links among others. Bashirmazandaran newspaper has the largest number of foreign users whilst Karvakargar newspaper has no foreign users. The results of the study also show that most newspaper web sites' visitors come from the USA. Correspondence analysis classifies 24 web sites into three groupings gathered based on some common attributes.

Originality/value

The results of this research will be useful not only for administrators of Iranian newspapers' web sites but anyone with a need to increase usage of a web site and an interest in analyzing the use of web site which naturally includes librarians and those in charge of library web sites.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to evaluate Indian newspaper web sites using Alexa databank.

Design/methodology/approach

The list compiled by Audit Bureau of Circulations of top newspapers in India by daily circulation was used for selecting newspapers. The list included 28 newspapers in various languages. Out of these 26 were available online. These 26 newspapers are taken for evaluation in the present study. Each newspaper web site was searched in Alexa databank and relevant data including traffic rank, pages viewed, speed, links, bounce percentage, time on site, search percentage, and Indian/foreign users were collected. The data collected were analysed and tabulated to reveal findings in accordance with the desired objectives.

Findings

The results of this study show that Dainik Bhaskar has the highest traffic rank. Punjab Kesari has the highest number of average pages viewed per day and estimated daily time spent on site by the visitors. The fastest downloading speed is for Economic Times. Hindustan Times has the highest number of links. Decan Herald has the highest reach amongst the global internet users, where as Udayavani has the lowest bounce percentage. The highest percentage of visits that came from search engines is for Dainik Jagran. The highest number of foreign users is for Ananda Bazar Patrika. Most of the foreign users to Indian newspapers come from the USA.

Originality/value

Besides administrators of Indian newspapers, the results of this study will be useful for web site managers in any field including those in charge of library web sites. The study will also help librarians and anyone interested to increase usage of a web site by analysing the use of web site.

To construct web visibility profiles of news web sites by examining hyperlinks pointing to the sites.

1446

Abstract

Purpose

To construct web visibility profiles of news web sites by examining hyperlinks pointing to the sites.

Design/methodology/approach

National newspapers from USA (USA Today), Canada (The Globe and Mail), China (People's Daily) as well as Hong Kong (Sing Tao Daily) were selected for the study. A total of 1,859 links pointing to the four news sites were manually classified into the four aspects of language, country, types of sites, and reasons or purposes for linking.

Findings

A comparison of the four news sites provided useful information on their web visibility. The Globe and Mail seemed to have a larger international reach than USA Today. Neither newspaper web site attracted links from China or from pages in the Chinese language. Outside China, People's Daily, an official Chinese Government newspaper, is not as visible as Hong Kong based Sing Tao Daily. USA Today and The Globe and Mail were used more for news citing or reprinting purposes while People's Daily seemed to be used more as a research resource.

Research limitations/implications

Link analysis like this provides us with only an indirect view of the online readership and the methodology has limitations. Not all readers create links to the newspaper sites that they visit. Readers could be led to a news site through other venues including “social bookmarking” services.

Practical implications

The study shows that link analysis is a novel and useful method that journalists and information professionals can use to gauge online readership and potential impact of news sites.

Originality/value

Presented a novel method that complements but not replaces other web user studies such as web server log analysis.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyze key factors that could influence the choice of digital newspapers: usability of newspaper web sites, reputation, trust, privacy and familiarity.

Design/methodology/approach

A survey on the Internet was applied. The scales were validated and refined, after which the hypotheses were tested by way of a structural equation model.

Findings

The results support an intense effect of usability and familiarity with web sites on the choice of electronic newspaper. However, reputation, privacy and trust in the web sites do not influence significantly the final choice of digital dailies. This is due to the readers who do not perceive risk and costs derived by choosing mistakes or giving data, because the change of news supplier is really fast and easy.

Research limitations/implications

The main aspects which justify digital newspaper reading should be considered by the management in order to develop its use. Also, newspaper firms should make efforts to improve the levels of usability of their web sites. Moreover, digital dailies should develop strategies in order to ensure the loyalty of readers who could be familiarized with the new medium.

Originality/value

This is one of the first studies that analyze online press reader behavior on the Internet. The paper identifies the main factors related to web sites that affect reading newspapers on the Internet.

Abstract

This paper discusses the ways in which regional newspapers in the UK have reacted to the challenges posed by the Internet. A detailed evaluation of the web sites for 25 regional newspapers demonstrated clear audience trends and a certain consensus of styles and features. The level of commercial activity in the form of advertising was found to be generally low, and the strategies to promote local business involvement varied. Nine of these 25 newspapers responded to a questionnaire that sought to gauge levels of awareness of industry developments, how the operation is currently managed, and what expectations are held for the future. The overall picture was one of optimism for the future, tempered by the initial caution that characterises any new field.

Abstract

Market‐based and press‐freedom variables were tested as predictors of “interactive” online journalism at the Web companions of 17 English‐language Asian newspapers. A multidimensional conception of interactivity was used in the analysis. The findings suggest that market‐based variables predict only certain facets of an online newspaper’s interactivity. Press‐freedom variables were not fruitful predictors.

Abstract

Many Web sites include buttons or links (sharing tools) that allow users to conveniently share news stories and other information with friends, family and colleagues via e‐mail. This paper reports on an exploratory study of the design and functional features of sharing tools on a sample of 11 US newspaper Web sites. The authors examined the appearance, location, and features of sharing tools that are provided to both senders and recipients. Sample news stories were also “shared” with one of the authors using each of the sharing tools, and data about the appearance and content of these messages were collected. The major findings of the study suggest that on the sampled Web sites: there is lack of standardisation in the visual design and placement of the sharing tools; insufficient information is provided to the user about how to use the tool; information about the security and privacy is absent or incomplete; and many tools cannot be user‐customized, and are not convenient to use.

Abstract

Traditional media, such as newspapers, are having to reassess their role in the Internet age. Not only are newspapers having to compete with each other, but also with foreign newspapers from all over the globe and their information providers choosing to deliver news on their websites. The aim of this paper is to determine the present state and the future of the British newspaper on the World Wide Web. An evaluation of the five British broadsheet websites was carried out between 11th August and 11th September 2000. Three broad categories were selected to evaluate the websites information content, interactivity and business and marketing features. Interviews were also carried out in order to gauge the opinion of journalists, information specialists and New Media professionals as to the future path for newspapers. The results showed that newspapers, to a certain extent, are still repurposing their hard copy content for the Web. However, online newspapers are making some advances by maximising their content and by developing discussion forums and feedback mechanisms. FT.com has made the greatest effort to reassess its purpose on the Internet. The interview results showed that there is no clear strategy for the future of newspapers on the WWW. However, what became clear was the opinion that newspapers should concentrate on targeting a local audience, facilitating community publishing and investing in research. All stress that whatever move they make, newspapers must make one and fast.

Abstract

Purpose

Librarians need to educate users about online newspapers available in the library. The purpose of this paper is to survey the attitude of librarians towards online newspapers.

Design/methodology/approach

A questionnaire on the various aspects of online newspaper usage was prepared and was circulated to librarians working in various parts of the country through e‐mail.

Findings

It was found that librarians are making use of many features in the newspaper sites while offering library services.

Research limitations/implications

Since the questionnaire was circulated online an interaction with the librarians was not possible. Partial responses were eliminated from the study.

Social implications

Newspapers are a preferred source of information. Online newspapers from different parts of the world open a new window of knowledge to all. Librarians and administrators should engage in promoting online newspapers so that they will reach a wider array of users.

Originality/value

The attitude of librarians in India towards online newspapers has not received much attention up to now; such a study would help various firms, library science educators and organizations to rethink their usage of online newspapers.
