Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to provide a new approach to address the problem of reaching the synchronous speed in the network connected multiple motors.

Design/methodology/approach

Practically, all the control approaches require continuous monitoring of the system thereby consuming extra energy. The method proposed in this paper uses an event-based approach with the multi-agent system (MAS) consensus control alongside with linear quadratic regulator control, thus saving a larger amount of energy. The proposed system is developed by using non-inverting buck boost chopper to provide necessary electrical power for the direct current motor, hence creating a single agent of bigger MAS with identical dynamics. The system stability is formulated by using Lyapunov stability theory. The proposed system is simulated via MATLAB.

Findings

The acquired simulated results validate that the proposed methodology and the multi-motor system worked successfully, thereby achieving common speed, i.e. consensus. The proposed system also validates the energy-saving concept.

Practical implications

Presently, the multiple motor synchronous speed system found application in paper-making machines, textile printing machines, offset printing, etc. The proposed study will contribute greatly to the existing methodologies and overcome their deficiencies by making the system more flexible and error-free due to the presence of network connectivity.

Originality/value

The system is simulated to verify theoretical concepts.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this research is to compare an industrial ethernet based network (PROFINET Class 1) with a traditional fieldbus network (PROFIBUS).

Design/methodology/approach

Two sets of identical motors were used in the experimental set-up. The speed synchronisation of a lead and follower motors was compared using both PROFINET Class 1 and a PROFIBUS DP network. The level of synchronising achievable was used as a measure of performance for each network.

Findings

It was found that PROFIBUS DP produces a better performance for set point and load changes than PROFINET Class 1 network.

Research limitations/implications

PROFINET Class 2 and higher could not be used in the experiment due to availability of equipment and funding.

Practical implications

This research provides a comparative study of two very popular industrial networks. The results can be used as reference by industry for selection of industrial networks.

Originality/value

The paper provides a manufacturer independent practical comparison of two industrial networks. The application area of speed synchronisation is demanding, and should inform the user on the performance and limitation of industrial networks.

Abstract

Purpose

In order to improve the weak recognition accuracy and robustness of the classification algorithm for brain-computer interface (BCI), this paper proposed a novel classification algorithm for motor imagery based on temporal and spatial characteristics extracted by using convolutional neural networks (TS-CNN) model.

Design/methodology/approach

According to the proposed algorithm, a five-layer neural network model was constructed to classify the electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. Firstly, the author designed a motor imagery-based BCI experiment, and four subjects were recruited to participate in the experiment for the recording of EEG signals. Then, after the EEG signals were preprocessed, the temporal and spatial characteristics of EEG signals were extracted by longitudinal convolutional kernel and transverse convolutional kernels, respectively. Finally, the classification of motor imagery was completed by using two fully connected layers.

Findings

To validate the classification performance and efficiency of the proposed algorithm, the comparative experiments with the state-of-the-arts algorithms are applied to validate the proposed algorithm. Experimental results have shown that the proposed TS-CNN model has the best performance and efficiency in the classification of motor imagery, reflecting on the introduced accuracy, precision, recall, ROC curve and F-score indexes.

Originality/value

The proposed TS-CNN model accurately recognized the EEG signals for different tasks of motor imagery, and provided theoretical basis and technical support for the application of BCI control system in the field of rehabilitation exoskeleton.

Abstract

Purpose

Recently, the convolutional neural network (ConvNet) has a wide application in the classification of motor imagery EEG signals. However, the low signal-to-noise electroencephalogram (EEG) signals are collected under the interference of noises. However, the conventional ConvNet model cannot directly solve this problem. This study aims to discuss the aforementioned issues.

Design/methodology/approach

To solve this problem, this paper adopted a novel residual shrinkage block (RSB) to construct the ConvNet model (RSBConvNet). During the feature extraction from EEG signals, the proposed RSBConvNet prevented the noise component in EEG signals, and improved the classification accuracy of motor imagery. In the construction of RSBConvNet, the author applied the soft thresholding strategy to prevent the non-related motor imagery features in EEG signals. The soft thresholding was inserted into the residual block (RB), and the suitable threshold for the current EEG signals distribution can be learned by minimizing the loss function. Therefore, during the feature extraction of motor imagery, the proposed RSBConvNet de-noised the EEG signals and improved the discriminative of classification features.

Findings

Comparative experiments and ablation studies were done on two public benchmark datasets. Compared with conventional ConvNet models, the proposed RSBConvNet model has obvious improvements in motor imagery classification accuracy and Kappa coefficient. Ablation studies have also shown the de-noised abilities of the RSBConvNet model. Moreover, different parameters and computational methods of the RSBConvNet model have been tested on the classification of motor imagery.

Originality/value

Based on the experimental results, the RSBConvNet constructed in this paper has an excellent recognition accuracy of MI-BCI, which can be used for further applications for the online MI-BCI.

Abstract

Purpose

The strategic importance of the purchasing function increases, as its task become more dynamic in various interfaces with different suppliers. Changes in these customer–supplier interfaces pose specific challenges. The purpose of this study is to investigate how the purchasing function handles the interplay of interface changes.

Design/methodology/approach

This study applies a qualitative single case study design. Data are collected through observations and interviews conducted before, during and after a concrete change of interface taking place between a buying firm and its suppliers and customers.

Findings

Three main findings are identified to redefine the tasks of the purchasing function. The first concerns the new ways of defining the purchasing tasks. The main issue is to balance tasks with the simultaneous changes influencing other interfaces and relationships. The second is the division and alignment of tasks in intra- and inter-organizational networks with regards to who decides and coordinates what. Third, the inter-connected performance relates to how other actors perform their tasks. For the purchasing function, managing supplier interfaces influences and is influenced by how the firm simultaneously manages its user interface.

Practical implications

For management, a new way to evaluate the performance of the purchasing function is needed by including relationship management and interactive capabilities.

Originality/value

This study contributes with new insights into how managing the dynamics of changing interfaces requires interactively defined purchasing tasks, division and alignment of tasks and inter-connected performance vis-à-vis others in the wider network setting.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims to propose a new type of three-phase quasi-Z-source indirect matrix converter (QZSIMC) to extend the voltage gain for application in the induction motor drives.

Design/methodology/approach

A unique H-shape quasi-Z-source network is connected between the three-phase voltage source and traditional indirect matrix converter to achieve the voltage boost and buck in a single-stage power conversion. The complete space vector modulation (SVM) method is proposed to control the proposed QZSIMC. The output voltage amplitude of quasi-Z-source network can be boosted by the shoot-through of the front-end rectifier, so the whole system's voltage gain is extended. Meanwhile, the QZSIMC modeling and quasi-Z-source impedance parameter design are developed by using the state space averaging method. The design-oriented analysis based on small signal model is used to investigate the quasi-Z-source impedance parameter's impact on the QZSIMC's dynamic performance. A simulated application example employs a 4-kW induction motor drive to verify the proposed QZSIMC, the developed modulation method and parameter design method.

Findings

The proposed QZSIMC can achieve high voltage gain larger than one and also can fulfill buck function, which widens the induction motor drive's operation range. The simulation results verify the proposed QZSIMC and SVM and also validate the quality performance of the proposed induction motor drive and all theoretical analysis and parameter design method.

Originality/value

The proposed QZSIMC effectively overcomes the limitation of traditional indirect matrix converter, through extending the voltage gain larger than one. The systematic principle, analysis, parameter design, and simulation verification provide the proposed QZSIMC with a feasible approach in practical induction motor drive applications.

Abstract

This paper deals with the organizing of interactive product development. Developing products in interaction between firms may provide benefits in terms of specialization, increased innovation, and possibilities to perform development activities in parallel. However, the differentiation of product development among a number of firms also implies that various dependencies need to be dealt with across firm boundaries. How dependencies may be dealt with across firms is related to how product development is organized. The purpose of the paper is to explore dependencies and how interactive product development may be organized with regard to these dependencies.

The analytical framework is based on the industrial network approach, and deals with the development of products in terms of adaptation and combination of heterogeneous resources. There are dependencies between resources, that is, they are embedded, implying that no resource can be developed in isolation. The characteristics of and dependencies related to four main categories of resources (products, production facilities, business units and business relationships) provide a basis for analyzing the organizing of interactive product development.

Three in-depth case studies are used to explore the organizing of interactive product development with regard to dependencies. The first two cases are based on the development of the electrical system and the seats for Volvo’s large car platform (P2), performed in interaction with Delphi and Lear respectively. The third case is based on the interaction between Scania and Dayco/DFC Tech for the development of various pipes and hoses for a new truck model.

The analysis is focused on what different dependencies the firms considered and dealt with, and how product development was organized with regard to these dependencies. It is concluded that there is a complex and dynamic pattern of dependencies that reaches far beyond the developed product as well as beyond individual business units. To deal with these dependencies, development may be organized in teams where several business units are represented. This enables interaction between different business units’ resource collections, which is important for resource adaptation as well as for innovation. The delimiting and relating functions of the team boundary are elaborated upon and it is argued that also teams may be regarded as actors. It is also concluded that a modular product structure may entail a modular organization with regard to the teams, though, interaction between business units and teams is needed. A strong connection between the technical structure and the organizational structure is identified and it is concluded that policies regarding the technical structure (e.g. concerning “carry-over”) cannot be separated from the management of the organizational structure (e.g. the supplier structure). The organizing of product development is in itself a complex and dynamic task that needs to be subject to interaction between business units.

Purpose – This chapter reviews planning and design approaches for cycle traffic in order to direct future thinking towards the critical aspects of network design that will have a beneficial impact on the utility and nature of the environment for cycling.

Approach – This chapter provides a critique of the approach of adopting a so-called hierarchy of solutions frequently adopted in western countries with low levels of cycling use.

Findings – The guiding principle for designing routes for cycle traffic is that the bicycle is a vehicle capable of speed and, as a consequence, links and junctions need to be designed according to appropriate geometric design standards. In addition, owing to the nature of the cycle and rider combination, the oft repeated Dutch characteristics for good design for cycle traffic of coherence, directness, attractiveness, safety and comfort remain firm.

Practical implications – The practical implications of the outcomes from the chapter are a method of approach for planning infrastructure for cycle traffic which starts with an analysis of demand and works through to the creation of suitable networks for cycle traffic which are grounded in, and extended from, suitably regulated existing highway networks.

Social implications – An extensive transport system suitable in nature for cycle traffic will attract a wide base of users and consequently allow for the benefits of cycling to be captured.

Value of chapter – The value of the chapter rests in its emphasis on the need to treat cycling as a distinct transport mode and, consequentially, planning and engineering needs to be undertaken in a way conducive to providing the basic necessary infrastructure for such a distinct mode.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to map the evolution of research in business ethics from 1991 to 2018. It aims to identify the major themes and how they have evolved. It also aims to identify gaps in the literature for recommending future research agenda.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses co-word network analysis. Co-word network analysis is a bibliometric technique used to objectively identify research themes via article keywords. The study examines articles from 1991 to 2018, which is a span encompassing a greater number of articles than previous bibliometric studies in business ethics. This time span was split into four periods and major research themes were identified for each period to map the changes in research agendas in the business ethics discipline over time.

Findings

The findings point to increasing maturation of the discipline, a slight decline in ethical decision-making research, a rise in research at the intersection of leadership and ethics and exponential growth in studies on corporate social responsibility. Ethical issues in business-to-business contexts are understudied. Research in environmental disclosures and leadership is expected to grow in the future.

Originality/value

This is the first study in business ethics to use keywords for analyzing the evolution of a discipline. This study encompasses more articles than any other study in business ethics. Finally, this is the only study to use co-word network analysis to study business ethics literature.
