Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study, a bridged-T topology with inductorless passive network used as a bandpass (BP) negative group delay (NGD) function.

Design/methodology/approach

The BP NGD topology under study is composed of an inductorless passive resistive capacitive network. The circuit analysis is elaborated from the equivalent impedance matrix. Then, the analytical model of the C-shunt bridged-T topology voltage transfer function is established. The BP NGD analysis of the considered topology is developed in function of the bridged-T parameters. The NGD properties and characterizations of the proposed topology are analytically expressed. Moreover, the relevance of the BP NGD theory is verified with the design and fabrication of surface mounted device components-based proof-of-concept (PoC).

Findings

From measurement results, the BP NGD network with −151 ns at the center frequency of 1 MHz over −6.6 dB attenuation is in very good agreement with the C-shunt bridged-T PoC.

Originality/value

This paper develops a mathematical modeling theory and measurement of a C-shunt bridged-T network circuit.

Abstract

Purpose

To provide an efficient and accurate model for interconnect networks characterised by frequency‐domain scattering or admittance parameters. The parameters are derived from measurements or rigorous full‐wave simulation.

Design/methodology/approach

Initially, Hilbert transform relationships are enforced to ensure causality. A reverse Fourier series representation of the discrete data is then converted to the z‐domain and from this a state‐space formulation is determined. This enables the application of a judiciously chosen model reduction algorithm to obtain an efficient time‐domain representation of the network.

Findings

Sample results from both simulated and measured data indicate the efficacy of the proposed modelling strategy. For successful implementation of the strategy, it is necessary to employ the Hilbert transform to ensure that a causal impulse response is obtained.

Practical implications

The method is applicable to the interconnect networks for which the analytical models cannot be obtained due to the complexity and inhomogeneity of the geometries involved.

Originality/value

The work combines in a novel manner aspects from several existing techniques proposed for network simulation and model reduction. The end result is a highly efficient causal, stable and passive representation of the network in question for implementation in a time‐domain circuit simulator.

Abstract

Purpose

This work is intended to historically commemorate the one hundredth anniversary of the invention of a new type of electronic circuit, referred to in 1919 by Abraham and Bloch as a multivibrator and by Eccles and Jordan as a trigger relay (later known as a flip-flop).

Design/methodology/approach

The author also considers the circuit-technical side of this new type of circuit, considering the technological change as well as the mathematical concepts developed in the context of the analysis of the circuit.

Findings

The multivibrator resulted in a “circuit shape” which became one of the most applied nonlinear circuits in electronics. It is shown that at the beginning the multivibrator as well as the flip-flop circuits were used because their interesting properties in the frequency domain.

Originality/value

Therefore, it is a very interesting subject to consider the history of the multivibrator as electronic circuits in different technologies including tube, transistors and integrated circuits as well as the mathematical theory based on the concept from electrical circuit theory.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose an efficient algorithm for computing the transient responses on wind turbine (WT) towers struck by lightning.

Design/methodology/approach

The tower is modeled as an electric network and a set of formulas are given for calculating the related electrical parameters. The parameters of grounding rods are also proposed. Based on the numerical representation of the transient characteristics of inductive elements, the electric network is converted into an equivalent circuit. The transient responses are obtained from the equivalent circuit by using circuit analysis method.

Findings

The calculated results are in good agreement with results computed by a hybrid method in frequency and time domain, which demonstrating the validity of the proposed method.

Originality/value

The transient responses on WT towers struck by lightning are computed using the numerical calculation method directly in time domain and electric field, electromagnetic field and induced potentials will be computed from the responses directly, which can provide guidelines for lightning protection design.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present a method for thermal computations of power devices based on a coupling between thermal and pressure networks. The concept of the coupling as well as the solution procedure is explained. The included examples demonstrate that the new method can be efficiently used for design of transformers and other power devices.

Design/methodology/approach

The bidirectional propagation of temperature signal is introduced to the pressure network, which enables control of the power flow and a close coupling to the thermal network. The solution method is based on automatic splitting of the network definition (netlist) into two separate networks and iteratively solving the model using the Newton-Raphson approach as well as the adaptive relaxation enhanced by the direction change control.

Findings

The proposed approach offers reliable convergence behaviour even for models with unknown direction of the fluid flow (bidirectional flows). The accuracy is sufficient for engineering applications and comparable with the computational fluid dynamics method. The computation times in the range of milliseconds and seconds are attractive for using the method in engineering design tools.

Originality/value

The new method can be considered as a foundation for a consistent network modelling system of arbitrary thermodynamic problems including fluid flow. Such a modelling system can be used directly by device designers since the complexity of thermodynamic formulations is encapsulated in predefined network elements while the numerical solution is based on a standard network description and solvers (Spice).

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present one type of the architecture for wireless sensor network and to discuss in detail the hardware design of the sink node which can be responsible for transmission data or instructions between sensor nodes and data. Finally, an experiment based on wireless sensor network has proved that the design of sink node is applicable and reliable in monitoring environmental elements such as temperature, humidity, etc.

Design/methodology/approach

A design for the sink node is presented which constants three parts: the power module, the storage/display module and the communication module. Zigbee, GPRS and Ethernet techniques are used on ARM7 microcontroller. The sink node is capable of bridging the user's terminal with sensor nodes for information transmission.

Findings

In this paper, a new method of the power management based on wireless sensor network is proposed to conserve energy. The antenna height is proven to be an important factor to the communicating among nodes. Finally, the paper proposes regular patterns of the deployment for sensor nodes based on the communication range and the sampling range.

Originality/value

The experiment for providing real‐time data on environment monitoring parameters indicates that the system is efficient. The authors believe that the idea and the design presented in the paper may help the research and application of wireless sensor network.

Abstract

Purpose

Passivity theory is closely related to both electrical network and circuit analysis methods. The purpose of this paper is to try to establish some basic results on the uncertain discrete‐time fuzzy systems.

Design/methodology/approach

Applying the classical and effective Lyapunov function method and the powerful linear matrix inequality toolbox in MATLAB, the paper provides some sufficient conditions to verify the passivity of the uncertain discrete‐time fuzzy systems, or to passify such a system.

Findings

For uncertain discrete‐time fuzzy systems, its passivity can be easily verified numerically, and its passification can also be fulfilled.

Practical implications

A very effective and convenient criterion is provided to test the passivity of practical nonlinear discrete‐time system or to passify it.

Originality/value

This paper first treats this topic on uncertain discrete‐time fuzzy systems and obtains some important results.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to introduce some of the most important engineering, and information systems management principles and challenges, that radio frequency identification (RFID) researchers, implementers and users should keep in mind when developing such systems, and/or planning for such applications.

Design/methodology/approach

Provides a general review of RFID systems.

Findings

RFID technologies with the appropriate IT infrastructure help both major distributors and manufacturers, as well as other logistics operations, such as the health‐care system, defense industries, and others, dealing with complex, global supply chains in which products and product shipments must be traced and identified in a non‐contact, wireless fashion using a computer network, because of cost, or security, or safety, or because parts are subject to corrosion, or food/medicine is subject to quality degradation, or other reasons. All of these requirements point to an automated, wireless‐readable sensory‐based identification method, and network, that offers more functionalities and is significantly “smarter” than the well known bar code or the unified product code. RFIDs are available as passive and/or active radio read/write sensor‐packages with active read (and often write) capabilities in relatively large areas (like a large distribution centre warehouse, or a containership), all performed automatically, supervised by computers and communicated in a wireless fashion over secure intranets. RFID represents great research, technology, as well as huge business opportunities.

Practical implications

RFID has the potential to change the way we do business all around the world. It is a huge challenge, not just because of the sophisticated sensor‐network technology, but also because of the vast systems integration and IT tasks ahead of us.

Originality/value

Reviews the current state‐of‐the‐art and future opportunities.
