Abstract

Purpose

With the increasing demand for surveillance and smart transportation, drone technology has become the center of attraction for robotics researchers. This study aims to introduce a new path planning approach to drone navigation based on topology in an uncertain environment. The main objective of this study is to use the Ricci flow evolution equation of metric and curvature tensor over angular Riemannian metric, and manifold for achieving navigational goals such as path length optimization at the minimum required time, collision-free obstacle avoidance in static and dynamic environments and reaching to the static and dynamic goals. The proposed navigational controller performs linearly and nonlinearly both with reduced error-based objective function by Riemannian metric and scalar curvature, respectively.

Design/methodology/approach

Topology and manifolds application-based methodology establishes the resultant drone. The trajectory planning and its optimization are controlled by the system of evolution equation over Ricci flow entropy. The navigation follows the Riemannian metric-based optimal path with an angular trajectory in the range from 0° to 360°. The obstacle avoidance in static and dynamic environments is controlled by the metric tensor and curvature tensor, respectively. The in-house drone is developed and coded using C++. For comparison of the real-time results and simulation results in static and dynamic environments, the simulation study has been conducted using MATLAB software. The proposed controller follows the topological programming constituted with manifold-based objective function and Riemannian metric, and scalar curvature-based constraints for linear and nonlinear navigation, respectively.

Findings

This proposed study demonstrates the possibility to develop the new topology-based efficient path planning approach for navigation of drone and provides a unique way to develop an innovative system having characteristics of static and dynamic obstacle avoidance and moving goal chasing in an uncertain environment. From the results obtained in the simulation and real-time environments, satisfactory agreements have been seen in terms of navigational parameters with the minimum error that justifies the significant working of the proposed controller. Additionally, the comparison of the proposed navigational controller with the other artificial intelligent controllers reveals performance improvement.

Originality/value

In this study, a new topological controller has been proposed for drone navigation. The topological drone navigation comprises the effective speed control and collision-free decisions corresponding to the Ricci flow equation and Ricci curvature over the Riemannian metric, respectively.

Abstract

Transitioning from childhood to adulthood for young people is a process that neither happens by accident nor does it happen on its own. It is a process that requires tools to manage it (Maja, 2022) and processes to ensure its success (Appadurai, 2004). In this chapter, I shall demonstrate that inborn traits (Appadurai, 2004) are an insufficient predictor of future success for young people. I will demonstrate that tools and processes, spearheaded by parents, are more powerful predictors of young people’s future success, even though both tools and processes are not equally distributed (Bok, 2010) amongst our young. Parental guidance and involvement is central in both activating these tools and processes, and managing them. I shall be using young people’s artefacts and their narratives of own aspirations – both virtual and physical – to elucidate my proposition further.

Abstract

Purpose

This case study presents a critical analysis of why and how corporate managers in China are reluctant to adopt sustainability reporting assurance (SRA) provided by externally independent third-party assurers, despite the fact that it is acknowledged as a value-adding activity globally.

Design/methodology/approach

A longitudinal fieldwork case study was conducted from 2014 to 2019 in a Chinese central state-owned enterprise (CSOE), a pioneer in sustainability reporting practice since the mid-2000s, to collect first-hand empirical data on managerial perceptions of the adoption of external SRA. Semi-structured interviews with 25 managers involved in sustainability (reporting) practice were conducted. The interview data were triangulated with an analysis of archival documents and board meeting minutes pertaining to the undertakings of sustainability practices in the case study organization.

Findings

Our empirical analysis suggests that while managers recognize the benefits of adopting external SRA in enhancing the legitimacy of sustainability accountability, they oppose SRA because of their deep-rooted allegiance to the dominant logic of sociopolitical stability in China. SRA is envisaged to risk the stability of the socialist ideology with which CSOEs are imbued. Therefore, any transformational approach to accepting a novel (foreign) practice must be molded to gain control and autonomy, thereby maintain the hegemony of stability logic. Instead of disregarding external verification, managers of our case SOE appear to harness sustainability reporting as a navigational space to engage in internally crafted alternative manners in order to resist the rationality of SRA.

Originality/value

The empirical analysis presents a nuanced explanation as to why internal managers have hitherto been reluctant to embrace the embedding of independent assurance into the sustainability reporting process. Our prolonged fieldwork provides ample context-specific, intra-organizational evidence regarding the absence of SRA in Chinese CSOEs, which warrants more attention given their considerable presence in the global economy. In addition, the empirical analysis contributes to our understanding of the managerial capture of sustainability issues in a specific context of state capitalism and how organizations and individuals in an authoritarian regime interpret and respond to novel discourses derived from distinct institutional settings.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to validate a framework for spatial representation, aka the spatial representation framework (SRF), to define spaces and building information required by people with visual impairment as a foundation of indoor maps for indoor navigation systems.

Design/methodology/approach

The SRF was first created with seven main components by a review of the relevant literature and state-of-the-art technologies shown in the preliminary study. This research comprised of two tasks: investigating problems and behaviors while accessing spaces and buildings by visually impaired people (VIP) and validating the SRF where 45 participants were recruited (30 VIP and 15 experts).

Findings

The findings revealed a list of problems and challenges were used to validate and redefine the spatial representation, which was validated by both VIP and experts. The framework subsequently consisted of 11 components categorized into five layers, each layer of which is responsible for a different function.

Research limitations/implications

This framework provides essential components required for building standard indoor maps as a foundation for indoor navigations systems for people with visual impairment.

Practical implications

This framework lays the foundation for a range of indoor-based applications by using this SRF to represent indoor spaces. Example applications include: indoor navigation by people with disabilities, robots and autonomous systems, security and surveillance, and context and spatial awareness.

Originality/value

This paper presents the validated spatial representation for indoor navigation by people with visual impairment with its details and description, methodology, results and findings of the validation of the SRF.

Abstract

The ability for learners to interact online via their avatars in a 3-D simulation space means that virtual worlds afford a host of educational opportunities not offered by other learning technology platforms, but their use also raises several pertinent issues that warrant consideration. This chapter reviews the educational use of virtual worlds from a design perspective. Virtual-world definitions are explored, along with their key educational characteristics. Different virtual-world environments are briefly contrasted, including Second Life, Active Worlds, Open Sim, and Minecraft. A wide variety of virtual-world uses in schools and universities are examined so as to understand their versatility. Key educational benefits of virtual worlds are distilled from the literature, such as the ability to facilitate 3-D simulations, role-plays, construction tasks, and immersive learning. Emergent issues surrounding the use of virtual worlds are also analyzed, including cognitive load, safety, and representational fidelity. One higher education and one school level vignette are provided in order to offer more detailed insight into the use of virtual worlds in practice. Recommendations for learning design and implementation are presented, based on the thematic analysis of contemporary virtual-worlds research.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore an alternative strategy to decrease disadvantaging gender binarism and cis-normativity in an organisational context by including trans* and gender diverse (TGD) employee voices through the development of a safe and brave space (S&BS).

Design/methodology/approach

This conceptual paper discusses the potential construction of S&BS and the possible integration as well as requirements of it into an organisational environment. The elaborated theoretical underpinning of a queering approach is used to build the foundation and the design of a potential successful implementation.

Findings

Current diversity management strategies are repeatedly reported as inadequate to tackle the issue of gender binarism and cis-normativity or even to reinforce them via various strategies. The integration of S&BS could offer cis as well as TGD people an opportunity to participate in the development of organisational structures and managerial decision-making within a democratic and empowering environment. Managing gender with the support of TGD employees may increase inclusion, equity and diversity of gender in management and organisation.

Originality/value

Although much of the management and organisational literature accepts the concept of gender binarism and cis-normativity, the integration of TGD employee voices through the adaptation of S&BS from an educational context into organisational management has not been explored.

Abstract

Purpose

Cutting-edge hospital and residential care architecture and interior design aim to address the emotional and practical needs of patients, staff and visitors. Yet, whilst improving on past practice, current approaches to design still rarely recognise or respond to individuals. The purpose of this paper is to provide a review of design-led research into digital technology across disciplines for the personalisation of healthcare environments and is informed by the authors’ ongoing hospital-based research.

Design/methodology/approach

This review is based on a design anthropology framework providing insight into designing for changing the experience for older patients in current healthcare contexts and future focused strategies, integrating digital technologies and human-centred design across scale and disciplines. It is informed by ongoing hospital studies based on design-led research methodology, drawing on design anthropology and ethnographical methods.

Findings

Technology enhanced, human-centred, assistive devices and environments implemented into healthcare across scale are developing but integration is needed for meaningful experiences.

Research limitations/implications

This review is a positioning paper for design-led research into digital technology across scale and medium.

Practical implications

This paper provides the basis for practical research including the ongoing hospital-based research of the authors.

Social implications

This approach potentially enhances emotional experiences of connected healthcare.

Originality/value

Future care scenarios are proposed, with technology and human experience as key drivers. Individualised and personalised solutions better cater for diversity. Within this context, it is strategic to question and test new ways of crafting the older persons care experience. This paper brings new direction to this discussion.
