Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate the research on the influence of tech-innovation behavior on tech-innovation performance for Chinese manufacturing enterprises. Environmental performance has been taken into consideration with the green manufacturing and sustainability philosophy being a hotspot.

Design/methodology/approach

To verify the hypotheses and assumptions, a questionnaire was designed and a semi-structured interview was conducted for data collection. In addition, structural equation modeling (SEM) is applied to verify the influence model through assessing the fitting indexes based on the 317 questionnaire responses in the form of Likert-type scale.

Findings

Tech-innovation behavior and activity from direction, mode and investment behavior dimensions show their different positive influences on tech-innovation performance. This paper has creatively taken environmental tech-innovation performance into consideration, as well as economic performance. This investigation has provided the interpretation for each individual enterprise from three dimensions when conducting tech-innovation activity.

Research limitations/implications

Tech-innovation behavior, which has been a subject of extended discussion during recent decades, is the effective activity or action for tech-innovation. However, there have not been any studies on the environmental performance influence study, as well as the economic performance from these three dimensions and framework.

Practical implications

As this paper discusses the tech-innovation performance influence study from three dimensions, individual enterprises can choose the corresponding action for the proper tech-innovation path, especially for small- and medium-sized enterprises.

Originality/value

This study helps managers recognize tech-innovation activities for better tech-innovation performance based on the empirical study.

Abstract

Purpose

The research aims to discuss technical and vocational students' long-term and complete evaluation of learning effectiveness under school-wide thematic teaching design.

Design/methodology/approach

This study adopted a mixed qualitative and quantitative approach to measure the learning effectiveness of thematic teaching in technical vocational schools using the Kirkpatrick model. Qualitative research conducted in-depth interviews with 32 interviewees, including students, parents, teachers, graduate alumni and the supervisors of off-campus internship units. Quantitative research conducted a questionnaire survey on vocational students. A total of 221 valid questionnaires were collected. In addition, this research conducts another quantitative survey on cooperative enterprises to compare the actual effect of the implementation of the school-wide thematic teaching students with the others, and a total of 35 valid questionnaires were collected.

Findings

The results of the research found that the effectiveness of thematic teaching method can achieve the expected goals of each level of Kirkpatrick model. The students taking thematic teaching are significantly better and fitting in the industry expects. Therefore, this research suggests the comprehensive introduction of school-wide thematic teaching to other school operators.

Originality/value

This research is the first study used the Kirkpatrick model to evaluate the effectiveness of school-wide thematic teaching design in hospitality education and providing a practical case for schools. This research combined qualitative and quantitative research methods to investigate the effectiveness of the teaching method through multiple perspectives. Through the feedback from supervisors of the hospitality industry, the school-wide thematic teaching design provides a good foundation for technical and vocational graduates.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is not only to develop an integrated model of subjective well-being (SWB) by using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and structural equation modeling (SEM) but also to prioritize the subfactors of personality and SWB that affect the contextual performance (CP) of an employee by using a fuzzy-analytical hierarchy process (FAHP), which has not been done in the past.

Design/methodology/approach

The data were collected from 15 field experts and 412 employees of information technology (IT) companies operating in India. The data analysis was performed in two stages. The first stage includes CFA and SEM. The second stage includes prioritizing the factor through FAHP.

Findings

The results of SEM analysis manifested that all the dimensions of personality have a significant impact on CP. However, in the case of SWB, only two components (satisfaction with life and positive affect) have a significant impact on CP. Results of FAHP show that SWB is more important in predicting CP than the Big Five personality dimensions.

Originality/value

This research is a novel attempt to test and prioritize the factors affecting the CP of IT employees. The findings of the research will be useful for managers in increasing the performance of their employees. Further, the findings of the research will contribute to the literature on the factors affecting CP.

Abstract

The divergence equations in Maxwell’s theory are Gauss law and the statement that magnetic monopoles do not exist; from this point of view these two equations are fundamental. However, from a practical point of view, it is generally believed that Maxwell’s divergence equations are redundant and may be ignored provided that they are satisfied at some time t‐0. It has been proved recently that this idea is not correct for boundary‐initial value problems. To make mathematical arguments more accessible, we analyse here the role of the divergence equations in the framework of 2D‐electromagnetism.

Abstract

Purpose

The solvency of insurance companies is closely related to the policyholders, and consequently regulators in Taiwan pay considerable attention to this area. Several studies have demonstrated a close correlation among capital structure, operational risk and profitability. This study seeks to provide evidence regarding the influence of capital structure and operational risk on profitability of the life insurance industry in Taiwan.

Design/methodology/approach

Structural equation modeling, which involves factor‐analysis and path‐analysis, is used to justify the relationship among capital structure, operational risk and profitability. Adding the macroeconomic latent variable to the model as a control variable demonstrates that the macroeconomic latent variable positively influences capital structure, operational risk and profitability.

Findings

The study leads to four key findings. First, according to the empirical result, the research model has excellent goodness‐of‐fit. That is to say, using multiple financial indices suitably measures the specific financial factors. Second, the capital structure exerts a negative and significant effect on operational risk. Third, there is no reciprocal relationship but a one‐way effect between capital structure and operational risk. Fourth, the operational risk exerts a negative and significant effect on profitability.

Practical implications

The empirical result shows the profitability decreased with the higher equity ratio. Hence, the regulatory organizations must urge insurance companies to effectively diversify their investments and employ risk avoidance strategies. Effective use of hedging and diversifying will help to divide risk and create financial revenue.

Originality/value

The study proposes that the government should loosen investment restrictions and develop other instruments to assist risk‐based capital in checking the financial condition of insurance companies.

Abstract

Purpose

Confronted with the transformation of industrial economies, the Taiwanese information technology (IT) industry has to upgrade from production to innovation orientation. The paper seeks to explore what is the core competence of the Taiwanese IT industry. In brief, what kind of intellectual capital (IC) is embedded in the Taiwanese IT industry and how this IC is managed effectively. The point is to discover how the Taiwanese IT industry should start to accumulate or enhance the core resource and strategic capability for future competitive advantage.

Design/methodology/approach

The study selected a relatively representative number of IT firms in Taiwan covering six industries. This study conducted a two‐stage survey to construct a measurement model and explored the IC profile of the Taiwanese IT industries.

Findings

This study was able to identify eight IC factors as a measuring model in exploring the IC profiles of four Taiwanese IT industries. The findings indicate the stronger IC in the Taiwanese IT industry as well as the weaker side.

Research limitations/implications

The research was limited by the sample within the Taiwan information communications technology industries. It needs to be extended across further industries in the future. It should also be compared with other countries’ industrial IC under similar assessment and measurement. The significant differences between industries could be explored by case study methodology.

Practical implications

Innovation capability plays an important role in confronting the knowledge‐based economy in Taiwanese IT industries. However, there is no compelling evidence to show that investment in research and development will help to achieve the goal of establishing Taiwan as an “Asia Pacific Electronic Information Industry Resource Integration Center”.

Originality/value

This research indicates that the IC System Model developed would help us to identify the interactions among IC elements. It could help to explore whether it is true that, the higher the IC management, the higher is the influence from the input of IC to the output.

This study aims to investigate dynamic relations among office property price indices of 10 major cities in China for the years 2005–2021.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate dynamic relations among office property price indices of 10 major cities in China for the years 2005–2021.

Design/methodology/approach

Using monthly data, the authors adopt vector error correction modeling and the directed acyclic graph for the characterization of contemporaneous causality among the 10 indices.

Findings

The PC algorithm identifies the causal pattern, and the linear non-Gaussian acyclic model algorithm further determines the causal path from which we perform innovation accounting analysis. Sophisticated price dynamics are found in price adjustment processes following price shocks, which are generally dominated by the top tier of cities.

Originality/value

This suggests that policies on office property prices, in the long run, might need to be planned with particular attention paid to the top tier of cities.
